Redeem Us, O God
1
For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. 1We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ לִבְנֵי־ קֹ֬רַח שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ בְּאָזְנֵ֬ינוּ אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ אֲבוֹתֵ֥ינוּ סִפְּרוּ־ לָ֑נוּ פֹּ֥עַל פָּעַ֥לְתָּ בִֽ֝ימֵיהֶ֗ם בִּ֣ימֵי קֶֽדֶם׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ maś·kîl liḇ·nê- qō·raḥ šā·ma‘·nū bə·’ā·zə·nê·nū ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū sip·pə·rū- lā·nū pō·‘al pā·‘al·tā ḇî·mê·hem bî·mê qe·ḏem — WLC · 1

With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted [our fathers] there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.

יָדְךָ֡ אַתָּ֤ה׀ ה֭וֹרַשְׁתָּ גּוֹיִ֣ם וַתִּטָּעֵ֑ם תָּרַ֥ע לְ֝אֻמִּ֗ים וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ yā·ḏə·ḵā ’at·tāh hō·w·raš·tā gō·w·yim wat·tiṭ·ṭā·‘êm tā·ra‘ lə·’um·mîm wat·tə·šal·lə·ḥêm — WLC · 2

For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory… It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.

You… are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.

אַתָּה־ ה֣וּא מַלְכִּ֣י אֱלֹהִ֑ים צַ֝וֵּ֗ה יְשׁוּע֥וֹת יַעֲקֹֽב׃ ’at·tāh- hū mal·kî ’ĕ·lō·hîm ṣaw·wêh yə·šū·‘ō·wṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ — WLC · 4

Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.

בְּ֭ךָ נְנַגֵּ֑חַ צָרֵ֣ינוּ בְּ֝שִׁמְךָ֗ נָב֥וּס קָמֵֽינוּ׃ bə·ḵā nə·nag·gê·aḥ ṣā·rê·nū bə·šim·ḵā nā·ḇūs qā·mê·nū — WLC · 5

For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword… save me.

כִּ֤י לֹ֣א אֶבְטָ֑ח בְקַשְׁתִּ֣י וְ֝חַרְבִּ֗י לֹ֣א תוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ kî lō ’eḇ·ṭāḥ ḇə·qaš·tî wə·ḥar·bî lō ṯō·wō·šî·‘ê·nî — WLC · 6

For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.

כִּ֣י ה֭וֹשַׁעְתָּנוּ מִצָּרֵ֑ינוּ וּמְשַׂנְאֵ֥ינוּ הֱבִישֽׁוֹתָ׃ kî hō·wō·ša‘·tā·nū miṣ·ṣā·rê·nū ū·mə·śan·’ê·nū hĕ·ḇî·šō·w·ṯā — WLC · 7

In God we have boasted all day long…, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah

בֵּֽ֭אלֹהִים הִלַּלְ֣נוּ כָל־ הַיּ֑וֹם וְשִׁמְךָ֓׀ נוֹדֶ֣ה לְעוֹלָ֖ם סֶֽלָה׃ bê·lō·hîm hil·lal·nū ḵāl hay·yō·wm wə·šim·ḵā nō·w·ḏeh lə·‘ō·w·lām se·lāh — WLC · 8

But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.

אַף־ זָ֭נַחְתָּ וַתַּכְלִימֵ֑נוּ וְלֹא־ תֵ֝צֵ֗א בְּצִבְאוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ ’ap̄- zā·naḥ·tā wat·taḵ·lî·mê·nū wə·lō- ṯê·ṣê bə·ṣiḇ·’ō·w·ṯê·nū — WLC · 9

You have made us retreat… from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.

תְּשִׁיבֵ֣נוּ אָ֭חוֹר מִנִּי־ צָ֑ר וּ֝מְשַׂנְאֵ֗ינוּ שָׁ֣סוּ לָֽמוֹ׃ tə·šî·ḇê·nū ’ā·ḥō·wr min·nî- ṣār ū·mə·śan·’ê·nū šā·sū lā·mōw — WLC · 10

You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.

תִּ֭תְּנֵנוּ כְּצֹ֣אן מַאֲכָ֑ל זֵרִיתָֽנוּ׃ וּ֝בַגּוֹיִ֗ם tit·tə·nê·nū kə·ṣōn ma·’ă·ḵāl zê·rî·ṯā·nū ū·ḇag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 11

You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.

תִּמְכֹּֽר־ עַמְּךָ֥ בְלֹא־ וְלֹ֥א־ ה֑וֹן רִ֝בִּ֗יתָ בִּמְחִירֵיהֶֽם׃ tim·kōr- ‘am·mə·ḵā ḇə·lō- wə·lō- hō·wn rib·bî·ṯā bim·ḥî·rê·hem — WLC · 12

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.

תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ חֶ֭רְפָּה לִשְׁכֵנֵ֑ינוּ לַ֥עַג וָ֝קֶ֗לֶס לִסְבִיבוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ tə·śî·mê·nū ḥer·pāh liš·ḵê·nê·nū la·‘aḡ wā·qe·les lis·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū — WLC · 13

You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock… among the peoples.

תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ מָ֭שָׁל בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם מְנֽוֹד־ רֹ֝֗אשׁ בַּל־ אֻמִּֽים׃ tə·śî·mê·nū mā·šāl bag·gō·w·yim mə·nō·wḏ- rōš bal- ’um·mîm — WLC · 14

All day long… my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉
כָּל־ הַ֭יּוֹם כְּלִמָּתִ֣י נֶגְדִּ֑י וּבֹ֖שֶׁת כִּסָּֽתְנִי׃ פָּנַ֣י kāl- hay·yō·wm kə·lim·mā·ṯî neḡ·dî ū·ḇō·šeṯ kis·sā·ṯə·nî pā·nay — WLC · 15

at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤐 𐤅𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤐 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤒𐤌
מִ֭קּוֹל מְחָרֵ֣ף וּמְגַדֵּ֑ף מִפְּנֵ֥י א֝וֹיֵ֗ב וּמִתְנַקֵּֽם׃ miq·qō·wl mə·ḥā·rêp̄ ū·mə·ḡad·dêp̄ mip·pə·nê ’ō·w·yêḇ ū·miṯ·naq·qêm — WLC · 16

All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You… or betrayed Your covenant.

כָּל־ זֹ֣את בָּ֭אַתְנוּ וְלֹ֣א שְׁכַחֲנ֑וּךָ וְלֹֽא־ שִׁ֝קַּ֗רְנוּ בִּבְרִיתֶֽךָ׃ kāl- zōṯ bā·’aṯ·nū wə·lō šə·ḵa·ḥă·nū·ḵā wə·lō·ši- šiq·qar·nû biḇ·rî·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 17

Our hearts have not turned back…; our steps have not strayed from Your path.

לִבֵּ֑נוּ לֹא־ נָס֣וֹג אָח֣וֹר אֲשֻׁרֵ֗ינוּ וַתֵּ֥ט מִנִּ֥י אָרְחֶֽךָ׃ lib·bê·nū lō- nā·sō·wḡ ’ā·ḥō·wr ’ă·šu·rê·nū wat·têṭ min·nî ’ā·rə·ḥe·ḵā — WLC · 18

But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us… with deepest darkness.

כִּ֣י דִ֭כִּיתָנוּ בִּמְק֣וֹם תַּנִּ֑ים וַתְּכַ֖ס עָלֵ֣ינוּ בְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃ kî ḏik·kî·ṯā·nū bim·qō·wm tan·nîm wat·tə·ḵas ‘ā·lê·nū ḇə·ṣal·mā·weṯ — WLC · 19

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

אִם־ שָׁ֭כַחְנוּ שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַנִּפְרֹ֥שׂ כַּ֝פֵּ֗ינוּ זָֽר׃ לְאֵ֣ל ’i·mō·šā- šā·k̲aḥ·nû šêm ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wan·nip̄·rōś kap·pê·nū zār lə·’êl — WLC · 20

would not God have discovered…, since He knows the secrets of the heart?

הֲלֹ֣א אֱ֭לֹהִים זֹ֑את יַֽחֲקָר־ כִּֽי־ ה֥וּא יֹ֝דֵ֗עַ תַּעֲלֻמ֥וֹת לֵֽב׃ hă·lō ’ĕ·lō·hîm zōṯ ya·ḥă·qār- kî- hū yō·ḏê·a‘ ta·‘ă·lu·mō·wṯ lêḇ — WLC · 21

Yet for Your sake we face death all day long…; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

כִּֽי־ עָ֭לֶיךָ הֹרַ֣גְנוּ כָל־ הַיּ֑וֹם נֶ֝חְשַׁ֗בְנוּ כְּצֹ֣אן טִבְחָֽה׃ kî- ‘ā·le·ḵā hō·raḡ·nū ḵāl hay·yō·wm neḥ·šaḇ·nū kə·ṣōn ṭiḇ·ḥāh — WLC · 22

Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever…

ע֤וּרָה׀ אֲדֹנָ֑י לָ֖מָּה תִישַׁ֥ן׀ הָ֝קִ֗יצָה אַל־ תִּזְנַ֥ח לָנֶֽצַח׃ ‘ū·rāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy lām·māh ṯî·šan hā·qî·ṣāh ’al- tiz·naḥ lā·ne·ṣaḥ — WLC · 23

Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?

לָֽמָּה־ תַסְתִּ֑יר פָנֶ֥יךָ תִּשְׁכַּ֖ח עָנְיֵ֣נוּ וְֽלַחֲצֵֽנוּ׃ lām·māh- ṯas·tîr p̄ā·ne·ḵā tiš·kaḥ ‘ā·nə·yê·nū wə·la·ḥă·ṣê·nū — WLC · 24

For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.

כִּ֤י נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ שָׁ֣חָה לֶעָפָ֣ר בִּטְנֵֽנוּ׃ דָּבְקָ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ kî nap̄·šê·nū šā·ḥāh le·‘ā·p̄ār biṭ·nê·nū dā·ḇə·qāh lā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 25

Rise up; be our help Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
