Chapter 40

I Waited Patiently for the LORD

1

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1I waited patiently for… the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.

𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤉

לַ֝מְנַצֵּ֗חַ מִזְמֽוֹר׃ לְדָוִ֥ד קַוֺּ֣ה קִוִּ֣יתִי יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֥ט אֵ֝לַ֗י וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע שַׁוְעָתִֽי׃ lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ miz·mō·wr lə·ḏā·wiḏ qaw·wōh qiw·wî·ṯî Yah·weh way·yêṭ ’ê·lay way·yiš·ma‘ šaw·‘ā·ṯîWLC · 1

He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, [and] made my footsteps firm.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤈𐤉𐤈 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤋𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤍

וַיַּעֲלֵ֤נִי׀ מִבּ֥וֹר שָׁאוֹן֮ הַיָּ֫וֵ֥ן מִטִּ֪יט וַיָּ֖קֶם רַגְלַ֗י עַל־ סֶ֥לַע אֲשֻׁרָֽי׃ כּוֹנֵ֥ן way·ya·‘ă·lê·nî mib·bō·wr šā·’ō·wn hay·yā·wên miṭ·ṭîṭ way·yā·qem raḡ·lay ‘al- se·la‘ ’ă·šu·rāy kō·w·nênWLC · 2

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤐𐤉 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיִּתֵּ֬ן חָדָשׁ֮ שִׁ֥יר בְּפִ֨י׀ תְּהִלָּ֪ה לֵֽאלֹ֫הֵ֥ינוּ רַבִּ֣ים יִרְא֣וּ וְיִירָ֑אוּ וְ֝יִבְטְח֗וּ בַּיהוָֽה׃ way·yit·tên ḥā·ḏāš šîr bə·p̄î tə·hil·lāh lê·lō·hê·nū rab·bîm yir·’ū wə·yî·rā·’ū wə·yiḇ·ṭə·ḥū Yah·wehWLC · 3

Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤈𐤉 𐤊𐤆𐤁

אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי הַגֶּ֗בֶר אֲשֶׁר־ שָׂ֣ם יְ֭הֹוָה מִבְטַח֑וֹ וְֽלֹא־ פָנָ֥ה אֶל־ רְ֝הָבִ֗ים וְשָׂטֵ֥י כָזָֽב׃ ’aš·rê hag·ge·ḇer ’ă·šer- śām Yah·weh miḇ·ṭa·ḥōw wə·lō- p̄ā·nāh ’el- rə·hā·ḇîm wə·śā·ṭê ḵā·zāḇWLC · 4

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I proclaim and declare them, they are more than [I] can count.

רַבּ֤וֹת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהַי֮ נִֽפְלְאֹתֶ֥יךָ אַתָּ֤ה׀ עָשִׂ֨יתָ׀ וּמַחְשְׁבֹתֶ֗יךָ אֵ֫לֵ֥ינוּ אֵ֤ין׀ עֲרֹ֬ךְ אֵלֶ֗יךָ אַגִּ֥ידָה וַאֲדַבֵּ֑רָה עָ֝צְמ֗וּ מִסַּפֵּֽר׃ rab·bō·wṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hay nip̄·lə·’ō·ṯe·ḵā ’at·tāh ‘ā·śî·ṯā ū·maḥ·šə·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā ’ê·lê·nū ’ên ‘ă·rōḵ ’ê·le·ḵā ’ag·gî·ḏāh wa·’ă·ḏab·bê·rāh ‘ā·ṣə·mū mis·sap·pêrWLC · 5

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.

𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕

זֶ֤בַח וּמִנְחָ֨ה׀ לֹֽא־ חָפַ֗צְתָּ אָ֭זְנַיִם כָּרִ֣יתָ לִּ֑י עוֹלָ֥ה וַ֝חֲטָאָ֗ה לֹ֣א שָׁאָֽלְתָּ׃ ze·ḇaḥ ū·min·ḥāh lō- ḥā·p̄aṣ·tā ’ā·zə·na·yim kā·rî·ṯā lî ‘ō·w·lāh wa·ḥă·ṭā·’āh lō šā·’ā·lə·tāWLC · 6

Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll…:

𐤀𐤆 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤂𐤋𐤕 𐤎𐤐𐤓

אָ֣ז אָ֭מַרְתִּי הִנֵּה־ בָ֑אתִי כָּת֥וּב עָלָֽי׃ בִּמְגִלַּת־ סֵ֝֗פֶר ’āz ’ā·mar·tî hin·nêh- ḇā·ṯî kā·ṯūḇ ‘ā·lāy bim·ḡil·laṯ- sê·p̄erWLC · 7

I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law [is] within my heart.”

𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤉

חָפָ֑צְתִּי לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת־ רְצוֹנְךָ֣ אֱלֹהַ֣י וְ֝ת֥וֹרָתְךָ֗ בְּת֣וֹךְ מֵעָֽי׃ ḥā·p̄ā·ṣə·tî la·‘ă·śō·wṯ- rə·ṣō·wn·ḵā ’ĕ·lō·hay wə·ṯō·w·rā·ṯə·ḵā bə·ṯō·wḵ mê·‘āyWLC · 8

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not seal my lips, as You, O LORD, do know.

𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕

בִּשַּׂ֤רְתִּי צֶ֨דֶק׀ רָ֗ב בְּקָ֘הָ֤ל הִנֵּ֣ה לֹ֣א אֶכְלָ֑א שְׂ֭פָתַי אַתָּ֥ה יְ֝הוָ֗ה יָדָֽעְתָּ׃ biś·śar·tî ṣe·ḏeq rāḇ bə·qā·hāl hin·nêh lō ’eḵ·lā śə·p̲ā·t̲ai ’at·tāh Yah·weh yā·ḏā·‘ə·tāWLC · 9

I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.

𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤇𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤒𐤄𐤋

לֹא־ כִסִּ֨יתִי׀ צִדְקָתְךָ֬ בְּת֬וֹךְ לִבִּ֗י אָמָ֑רְתִּי אֱמוּנָתְךָ֣ וּתְשׁוּעָתְךָ֣ לֹא־ כִחַ֥דְתִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ רָֽב׃ לְקָהָ֥ל lō- ḵis·sî·ṯî ṣiḏ·qā·ṯə·ḵā bə·ṯō·wḵ lib·bî ’ā·mā·rə·tî ’ĕ·mū·nā·ṯə·ḵā ū·ṯə·šū·‘ā·ṯə·ḵā lō- ḵi·ḥaḏ·tî ḥas·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mit·tə·ḵā rāḇ lə·qā·hālWLC · 10

  • O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.

𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤊𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤍𐤉

אַתָּ֤ה יְהוָ֗ה לֹא־ תִכְלָ֣א רַחֲמֶ֣יךָ מִמֶּ֑נִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ תָּמִ֥יד יִצְּרֽוּנִי׃ ’at·tāh Yah·weh lō- ṯiḵ·lā ra·ḥă·me·ḵā mim·men·nî ḥas·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mit·tə·ḵā tā·mîḏ yiṣ·ṣə·rū·nîWLC · 11

For evils… without number surround me…; my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot… see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed within me.

כִּ֤י רָע֡וֹת עַד־ אֵ֬ין מִסְפָּ֗ר אָפְפ֥וּ־ עָלַ֨י׀ עֲ֭וֺנֹתַי הִשִּׂיג֣וּנִי וְלֹא־ יָכֹ֣לְתִּי לִרְא֑וֹת עָצְמ֥וּ מִשַּֽׂעֲר֥וֹת רֹ֝אשִׁ֗י וְלִבִּ֥י עֲזָבָֽנִי׃ kî rā·‘ō·wṯ ‘aḏ- ’ên mis·pār ’ā·p̄ə·p̄ū- ‘ā·lay ‘ă·wō·nō·ṯay hiś·śî·ḡū·nî wə·lō- yā·ḵō·lə·tî lir·’ō·wṯ ‘ā·ṣə·mū miś·śa·‘ă·rō·wṯ rō·šî wə·lib·bî ‘ă·zā·ḇā·nîWLC · 12

Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD, to help me.

רְצֵ֣ה יְ֭הוָה לְהַצִּילֵ֑נִי חֽוּשָׁה׃ יְ֝הוָ֗ה לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי rə·ṣêh Yah·weh lə·haṣ·ṣî·lê·nî ḥū·šāh Yah·weh lə·‘ez·rā·ṯîWLC · 13

May those who seek vvv my life be ashamed and confounded…; may those who wish me harm be repelled… and humiliated.

𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤅

מְבַקְשֵׁ֥י לִסְפּ֫וֹתָ֥הּ נַפְשִׁ֗י יֵ֘בֹ֤שׁוּ וְיַחְפְּר֨וּ׀ יַחַד֮ חֲ֝פֵצֵ֗י רָעָתִֽי׃ יִסֹּ֣גוּ אָ֭חוֹר וְיִכָּלְמ֑וּ mə·ḇaq·šê lis·pō·w·ṯāh nap̄·šî yê·ḇō·šū wə·yaḥ·pə·rū ya·ḥaḏ ḥă·p̄ê·ṣê rā·‘ā·ṯî yis·sō·ḡū ’ā·ḥō·wr wə·yik·kā·lə·mūWLC · 14

May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled at… their own shame.

𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤇 𐤄𐤀𐤇 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤕𐤌

הָאֹמְרִ֥ים לִ֝֗י הֶ֘אָ֥ח׀ הֶאָֽח׃ יָ֭שֹׁמּוּ עַל־ עֵ֣קֶב בָּשְׁתָּ֑ם hā·’ō·mə·rîm lî he·’āḥ he·’āḥ yā·šōm·mū ‘al- ‘ê·qeḇ bā·šə·tāmWLC · 15

16

May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “The LORD be magnified!”

𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤊 𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤊 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋

כָּֽל־ מְבַ֫קְשֶׁ֥יךָ יָ֘שִׂ֤ישׂוּ וְיִשְׂמְח֨וּ׀ בְּךָ֗ אֹֽ֝הֲבֵ֗י תְּשׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃ תָ֭מִיד יֹאמְר֣וּ יְהוָ֑ה יִגְדַּ֣ל kāl- mə·ḇaq·še·ḵā yā·śî·śū wə·yiś·mə·ḥū bə·ḵā ’ō·hă·ḇê tə·šū·‘ā·ṯe·ḵā ṯā·mîḏ yō·mə·rū Yah·weh yiḡ·dalWLC · 16

But I [am] poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper and deliverer; O my God, do not delay.

וַאֲנִ֤י׀ עָנִ֣י וְאֶבְיוֹן֮ אֲדֹנָ֪י יַחֲשָׁ֫ב לִ֥י אַ֑תָּה עֶזְרָתִ֣י וּמְפַלְטִ֣י אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י אַל־ תְּאַחַֽר׃ wa·’ă·nî ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn ’ă·ḏō·nāy ya·ḥă·šāḇ lî ’at·tāh ‘ez·rā·ṯî ū·mə·p̄al·ṭî ’ĕ·lō·hay ’al- tə·’a·ḥarWLC · 17
