Chapter 34
Taste and See That the LORD Is Good
1
Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, so that [the king] drove him away. 1I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.

My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed hear and rejoice.

Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.

גַּדְּל֣וּ לַיהוָ֣ה אִתִּ֑י וּנְרוֹמְמָ֖ה שְׁמ֣וֹ יַחְדָּֽו׃ gad·də·lū Yah·weh ’it·tî ū·nə·rō·wm·māh šə·mōw yaḥ·dāw — WLC · 3

I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.

דָּרַ֣שְׁתִּי אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה וְעָנָ֑נִי הִצִּילָֽנִי׃ וּמִכָּל־ מְ֝גוּרוֹתַ֗י dā·raš·tî ’eṯ- Yah·weh wə·‘ā·nā·nî hiṣ·ṣî·lā·nî ū·mik·kāl- mə·ḡū·rō·w·ṯay — WLC · 4

Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed.

הִבִּ֣יטוּ אֵלָ֣יו וְנָהָ֑רוּ וּ֝פְנֵיהֶ֗ם אַל־ יֶחְפָּֽרוּ׃ hib·bî·ṭū ’ê·lāw wə·nā·hā·rū ū·p̄ə·nê·hem ’al- yeḥ·pā·rū — WLC · 5

This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.
𐤆𐤄 𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅
זֶ֤ה עָנִ֣י קָ֭רָא וַיהוָ֣ה שָׁמֵ֑עַ הוֹשִׁיעֽוֹ׃ וּמִכָּל־ צָ֝רוֹתָ֗יו zeh ‘ā·nî qā·rā Yah·weh šā·mê·a‘ hō·wō·šî·‘ōw ū·mik·kāl- ṣā·rō·w·ṯāw — WLC · 6

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them.
𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤌
מַלְאַךְ־ יְהוָ֓ה חֹנֶ֤ה סָ֘בִ֤יב לִֽירֵאָ֗יו וַֽיְחַלְּצֵֽם׃ mal·’aḵ- Yah·weh ḥō·neh sā·ḇîḇ lî·rê·’āw way·ḥal·lə·ṣêm — WLC · 7

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

טַעֲמ֣וּ וּ֭רְאוּ כִּי־ יְהוָ֑ה ט֣וֹב אַֽשְׁרֵ֥י הַ֝גֶּ֗בֶר יֶחֱסֶה־ בּֽוֹ׃ ṭa·‘ă·mū ū·rə·’ū kî- Yah·weh ṭō·wḇ ’aš·rê hag·ge·ḇer ye·ḥĕ·seh- bōw — WLC · 8

Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing.

יְר֣אוּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה קְדֹשָׁ֑יו כִּי־ לִירֵאָֽיו׃ מַ֝חְס֗וֹר אֵ֥ין yə·r·’ū ’eṯ- Yah·weh qə·ḏō·šāw kî- lî·rê·’āw maḥ·sō·wr ’ên — WLC · 9

Young lions go lacking and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no… good thing.

כְּ֭פִירִים רָשׁ֣וּ וְרָעֵ֑בוּ וְדֹרְשֵׁ֥י יְ֝הוָ֗ה יַחְסְר֥וּ לֹא־ כָל־ טֽוֹב׃ kə·p̄î·rîm rā·šū wə·rā·‘ê·ḇū wə·ḏō·rə·šê Yah·weh yaḥ·sə·rū lō- ḵāl ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 10

Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

לְֽכוּ־ בָ֭נִים שִׁמְעוּ־ לִ֑י אֲלַמֶּדְכֶֽם׃ יִֽרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הוָ֗ה lə·ḵū- ḇā·nîm šim·‘ū- lî ’ă·lam·meḏ·ḵem yir·’aṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 11

Who is the man who delights in life, who desires to see good days?

מִֽי־ הָ֭אִישׁ הֶחָפֵ֣ץ חַיִּ֑ים אֹהֵ֥ב לִרְא֥וֹת טֽוֹב׃ יָ֝מִ֗ים mî- hā·’îš he·ḥā·p̄êṣ ḥay·yîm ’ō·hêḇ lir·’ō·wṯ ṭō·wḇ yā·mîm — WLC · 12
13
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech.

נְצֹ֣ר לְשׁוֹנְךָ֣ מֵרָ֑ע וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ מִרְמָֽה׃ מִדַּבֵּ֥ר nə·ṣōr lə·šō·wn·ḵā mê·rā‘ ū·śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā mir·māh mid·dab·bêr — WLC · 13

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
𐤎𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤒𐤔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤄𐤅
ס֣וּר מֵ֭רָע וַעֲשֵׂה־ ט֑וֹב בַּקֵּ֖שׁ שָׁל֣וֹם וְרָדְפֵֽהוּ׃ sūr mê·rā‘ wa·‘ă·śêh- ṭō·wḇ baq·qêš šā·lō·wm wə·rā·ḏə·p̄ê·hū — WLC · 14

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are inclined to their cry.
𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤌
עֵינֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה אֶל־ צַדִּיקִ֑ים וְ֝אָזְנָ֗יו אֶל־ שַׁוְעָתָֽם׃ ‘ê·nê Yah·weh ’el- ṣad·dî·qîm wə·’ā·zə·nāw ’el- šaw·‘ā·ṯām — WLC · 15
16
[But] the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to wipe out [all] memory of them from the earth.
𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤉 𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑
פְּנֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה בְּעֹ֣שֵׂי רָ֑ע לְהַכְרִ֖ית זִכְרָֽם׃ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ pə·nê Yah·weh bə·‘ō·śê rā‘ lə·haḵ·rîṯ ziḵ·rām mê·’e·reṣ — WLC · 16
17
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.
𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤌
צָעֲק֣וּ וַיהוָ֣ה שָׁמֵ֑עַ הִצִּילָֽם׃ וּמִכָּל־ צָ֝רוֹתָ֗ם ṣā·‘ă·qū Yah·weh šā·mê·a‘ hiṣ·ṣî·lām ū·mik·kāl- ṣā·rō·w·ṯām — WLC · 17
18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted…; He saves the contrite in spirit.

יְ֭הוָה קָר֣וֹב לְנִשְׁבְּרֵי־ לֵ֑ב וְֽאֶת־ יוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃ דַּכְּאֵי־ ר֥וּחַ Yah·weh qā·rō·wḇ lə·niš·bə·rê- lêḇ wə·’eṯ- yō·wō·šî·a‘ dak·kə·’ê- rū·aḥ — WLC · 18

Many [are] the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all.

רַ֭בּוֹת רָע֣וֹת צַדִּ֑יק יְהוָֽה׃ יַצִּילֶ֥נּוּ וּ֝מִכֻּלָּ֗ם rab·bō·wṯ rā·‘ō·wṯ ṣad·dîq Yah·weh yaṣ·ṣî·len·nū ū·mik·kul·lām — WLC · 19
20
He protects all his bones; not one of them will be broken.
𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤄
שֹׁמֵ֥ר כָּל־ עַצְמוֹתָ֑יו לֹ֣א אַחַ֥ת מֵ֝הֵ֗נָּה נִשְׁבָּֽרָה׃ šō·mêr kāl- ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāw lō ’a·ḥaṯ mê·hên·nāh niš·bā·rāh — WLC · 20
21
Evil {will} slay the wicked, and the haters of the righteous will be condemned.

רָעָ֑ה תְּמוֹתֵ֣ת רָשָׁ֣ע וְשֹׂנְאֵ֖י צַדִּ֣יק יֶאְשָֽׁמוּ׃ rā·‘āh tə·mō·w·ṯêṯ rā·šā‘ wə·śō·nə·’ê ṣad·dîq ye’·šā·mū — WLC · 21
22
The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
