The Song of the Slandered

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1O God of my praise, be not silent.
𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤌𐤆𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤇𐤓𐤔

For wicked… and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues.

כִּ֤י רָשָׁ֡ע וּֽפִי־ מִ֭רְמָה פִ֪י פָּתָ֑חוּ עָלַ֣י דִּבְּר֥וּ אִ֝תִּ֗י שָֽׁקֶר׃ לְשׁ֣וֹן kî rā·šā‘ ū·p̄î- mir·māh p̄î pā·ṯā·ḥū ‘ā·lay dib·bə·rū ’it·tî šā·qer lə·šō·wn — WLC · 2

They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause.

In return for my love they accuse me, but I [am a man] [of] prayer.

They repay me… evil for good, and hatred for my love.

Set over him a wicked man; let an accuser stand at his right hand.

הַפְקֵ֣ד עָלָ֣יו רָשָׁ֑ע וְ֝שָׂטָ֗ן יַעֲמֹ֥ד עַל־ יְמִינֽוֹ׃ hap̄·qêḏ ‘ā·lāw rā·šā‘ wə·śā·ṭān ya·‘ă·mōḏ ‘al- yə·mî·nōw — WLC · 6

When he is tried,… let him be found guilty, and may his prayer be regarded as sin.

בְּ֭הִשָּׁ֣פְטוֹ יֵצֵ֣א רָשָׁ֑ע וּ֝תְפִלָּת֗וֹ תִּהְיֶ֥ה לַֽחֲטָאָֽה׃ bə·hiš·šā·p̄ə·ṭōw yê·ṣê rā·šā‘ ū·ṯə·p̄il·lā·ṯōw tih·yeh la·ḥă·ṭā·’āh — WLC · 7

May his days be few; may another take his position.

יָמָ֥יו יִֽהְיֽוּ־ מְעַטִּ֑ים אַחֵֽר׃ יִקַּ֥ח פְּ֝קֻדָּת֗וֹ yā·māw yih·yū- mə·‘aṭ·ṭîm ’a·ḥêr yiq·qaḥ pə·qud·dā·ṯōw — WLC · 8

May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄
בָנָ֥יו יִֽהְיוּ־ יְתוֹמִ֑ים וְ֝אִשְׁתּוֹ אַלְמָנָֽה׃ ḇā·nāw yih·yū- yə·ṯō·w·mîm wə·’iš·tōw ’al·mā·nāh — WLC · 9

May his children wander… as beggars, seeking sustenance far from their ruined homes.

בָנָ֣יו וְנ֤וֹעַ יָנ֣וּעוּ וְשִׁאֵ֑לוּ וְ֝דָרְשׁ֗וּ מֵחָרְבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ ḇā·nāw wə·nō·w·a‘ yā·nū·‘ū wə·ši·’ê·lū wə·ḏā·rə·šū mê·ḥā·rə·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 10

May the creditor seize all he owns, and strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.

נ֭וֹשֶׁה יְנַקֵּ֣שׁ לְכָל־ אֲשֶׁר־ ל֑וֹ זָרִ֣ים וְיָבֹ֖זּוּ יְגִיעֽוֹ׃ nō·wō·šeh yə·naq·qêš lə·ḵāl ’ă·šer- lōw zā·rîm wə·yā·ḇōz·zū yə·ḡî·‘ōw — WLC · 11

May there be no one to extend kindness to him, [and] no one to favor his fatherless children.

יְהִ֥י וְֽאַל־ מֹשֵׁ֣ךְ חָ֑סֶד ל֭וֹ יְהִי־ אַל־ ח֝וֹנֵ֗ן לִיתוֹמָֽיו׃ yə·hî wə·’al- mō·šêḵ ḥā·seḏ lōw yə·hî- ’al- ḥō·w·nên lî·ṯō·w·māw — WLC · 12

May his descendants be cut off; may their name be blotted out from the next generation.

אַחֲרִית֥וֹ יְהִֽי־ לְהַכְרִ֑ית שְׁמָֽם׃ יִמַּ֥ח אַ֝חֵ֗ר בְּד֥וֹר ’a·ḥă·rî·ṯōw yə·hî- lə·haḵ·rîṯ šə·mām yim·maḥ ’a·ḥêr bə·ḏō·wr — WLC · 13

May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and the sin of his mother never be blotted out.

עֲוֺ֣ן אֲ֭בֹתָיו יִזָּכֵ֤ר׀ אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה וְחַטַּ֥את אִ֝מּ֗וֹ אַל־ תִּמָּֽח׃ ‘ă·wōn ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw yiz·zā·ḵêr ’el- Yah·weh wə·ḥaṭ·ṭaṯ ’im·mōw ’al- tim·māḥ — WLC · 14

May [their sins] always remain before the LORD, that He may cut off their memory from the earth.
𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑
תָּמִ֑יד יִהְי֣וּ נֶֽגֶד־ יְהוָ֣ה וְיַכְרֵ֖ת זִכְרָֽם׃ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ tā·mîḏ yih·yū ne·ḡeḏ- Yah·weh wə·yaḵ·rêṯ ziḵ·rām mê·’e·reṣ — WLC · 15

For he never thought to show kindness, but pursued… the poor and needy and brokenhearted, even to their death.
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤊𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤕
יַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר׀ לֹ֥א זָכַר֮ עֲשׂ֪וֹת חָ֥סֶד וַיִּרְדֹּ֡ף אִישׁ־ עָנִ֣י וְ֭אֶבְיוֹן וְנִכְאֵ֨ה לֵבָ֬ב לְמוֹתֵֽת׃ ya·‘an ’ă·šer lō zā·ḵar ‘ă·śō·wṯ ḥā·seḏ way·yir·dōp̄ ’îš- ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn wə·niḵ·’êh lê·ḇāḇ lə·mō·w·ṯêṯ — WLC · 16

The cursing [that] he loved, may it fall on him; the blessing [in which] he refused to delight, may it be far from him.

קְ֭לָלָה וַיֶּאֱהַ֣ב וַתְּבוֹאֵ֑הוּ בִּ֝בְרָכָ֗ה וְֽלֹא־ חָפֵ֥ץ וַתִּרְחַ֥ק מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ qə·lā·lāh way·ye·’ĕ·haḇ wat·tə·ḇō·w·’ê·hū biḇ·rā·ḵāh wə·lō- ḥā·p̄êṣ wat·tir·ḥaq mim·men·nū — WLC · 17

The cursing [that] he wore like a coat, may it soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.
𐤒𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤁𐤔 𐤊𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤍
קְלָלָ֗ה וַיִּלְבַּ֥שׁ כְּמַ֫דּ֥וֹ וַתָּבֹ֣א בְּקִרְבּ֑וֹ כַמַּ֣יִם בְּעַצְמוֹתָֽיו׃ וְ֝כַשֶּׁ֗מֶן qə·lā·lāh way·yil·baš kə·mad·dōw wat·tā·ḇō bə·qir·bōw ḵam·ma·yim bə·‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯāw wə·ḵaš·še·men — WLC · 18

May it be like a robe wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.
𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤁𐤂𐤃 𐤉𐤏𐤈𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤆𐤇 𐤉𐤇𐤂𐤓𐤄 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃
תְּהִי־ ל֭וֹ כְּבֶ֣גֶד יַעְטֶ֑ה וּ֝לְמֵ֗זַח יַחְגְּרֶֽהָ׃ תָּמִ֥יד tə·hî- lōw kə·ḇe·ḡeḏ ya‘·ṭeh ū·lə·mê·zaḥ yaḥ·gə·re·hā tā·mîḏ — WLC · 19

May this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers,… to those who speak evil against me.
𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤕 𐤔𐤈𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉
זֹ֤את יְהוָ֑ה פְּעֻלַּ֣ת שֹׂ֭טְנַי מֵאֵ֣ת וְהַדֹּבְרִ֥ים רָ֝֗ע עַל־ נַפְשִֽׁי׃ zōṯ Yah·weh pə·‘ul·laṯ śō·ṭə·nai mê·’êṯ wə·had·dō·ḇə·rîm rā‘ ‘al- nap̄·šî — WLC · 20

But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for the sake of Your name; deliver me by the goodness of Your loving devotion.

וְאַתָּ֤ה׀ יְה֘וִ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֗י עֲֽשֵׂה־ אִ֭תִּי לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמֶ֑ךָ הַצִּילֵֽנִי׃ כִּי־ ט֥וֹב חַ֝סְדְּךָ֗ wə·’at·tāh Yah·weh ’ă·ḏō·nāy ‘ăśêh- ’it·tî lə·ma·‘an šə·me·ḵā haṣ·ṣî·lê·nî kî- ṭō·wḇ ḥas·də·ḵā — WLC · 21

For I [am] poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me.

כִּֽי־ אָנֹ֑כִי עָנִ֣י וְאֶבְי֣וֹן וְ֝לִבִּ֗י חָלַ֥ל בְּקִרְבִּֽי׃ kî- ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn wə·lib·bî ḥā·lal bə·qir·bî — WLC · 22

I am fading away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.

נֶהֱלָ֑כְתִּי כִּנְטוֹת֥וֹ כְּצֵל־ נִ֝נְעַ֗רְתִּי כָּֽאַרְבֶּֽה׃ ne·hĕ·lā·ḵə·tî kin·ṭō·w·ṯōw kə·ṣêl- nin·‘ar·tî kā·’ar·beh — WLC · 23

My knees are weak from fasting, and my body grows lean and gaunt.

בִּ֭רְכַּי כָּשְׁל֣וּ מִצּ֑וֹם וּ֝בְשָׂרִ֗י כָּחַ֥שׁ מִשָּֽׁמֶן׃ bir·kay kā·šə·lū miṣ·ṣō·wm ū·ḇə·śā·rî kā·ḥaš miš·šā·men — WLC · 24

I am an object of scorn to [my accusers]; when they see me, they shake their heads.

וַאֲנִ֤י׀ הָיִ֣יתִי חֶרְפָּ֣ה לָהֶ֑ם יִ֝רְא֗וּנִי יְנִיע֥וּן רֹאשָֽׁם׃ wa·’ă·nî hā·yî·ṯî ḥer·pāh lā·hem yir·’ū·nî yə·nî·‘ūn rō·šām — WLC · 25

Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to Your loving devotion.
𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤊
עָ֭זְרֵנִי יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑י ה֭וֹשִׁיעֵ֣נִי כְחַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ ‘ā·zə·rê·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāy hō·wō·šî·‘ê·nî ḵə·ḥas·de·ḵā — WLC · 26

Let them know that this [is] Your hand, that You, O LORD, have done it.
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤄
וְֽ֭יֵדְעוּ כִּי־ יָ֣דְךָ זֹּ֑את אַתָּ֖ה יְהוָ֣ה עֲשִׂיתָֽהּ׃ wə·yê·ḏə·‘ū kî- yā·ḏə·ḵā zōṯ ’at·tāh Yah·weh ‘ă·śî·ṯāh — WLC · 27

Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but Your servant will rejoice.

הֵמָּה֮ יְקַֽלְלוּ־ וְאַתָּ֪ה תְבָ֫רֵ֥ךְ קָ֤מוּ׀ וַיֵּבֹ֗שׁוּ וְֽעַבְדְּךָ֥ יִשְׂמָֽח׃ hêm·māh yə·qal·lū- wə·’at·tāh ṯə·ḇā·rêḵ qā·mū way·yê·ḇō·šū wə·‘aḇ·də·ḵā yiś·māḥ — WLC · 28

May my accusers be clothed with disgrace; may they wear their shame like a robe.

שׂוֹטְנַ֣י יִלְבְּשׁ֣וּ כְּלִמָּ֑ה וְיַעֲט֖וּ בָּשְׁתָּֽם׃ כַמְעִ֣יל śō·wṭ·nay yil·bə·šū kə·lim·māh wə·ya·‘ă·ṭū bā·šə·tām ḵam·‘îl — WLC · 29

With my mouth I will thank the LORD profusely; I will praise Him in the presence of many.

בְּפִ֑י א֘וֹדֶ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה מְאֹ֣ד אֲהַֽלְלֶֽנּוּ׃ וּבְת֖וֹךְ רַבִּ֣ים bə·p̄î ’ō·w·ḏeh Yah·weh mə·’ōḏ ’ă·hal·len·nū ū·ḇə·ṯō·wḵ rab·bîm — WLC · 30

For He stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from the condemners of his soul.

כִּֽי־ יַ֭עֲמֹד לִימִ֣ין אֶבְי֑וֹן לְ֝הוֹשִׁ֗יעַ מִשֹּׁפְטֵ֥י נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ kî- ya·‘ă·mōḏ lî·mîn ’eḇ·yō·wn lə·hō·wō·šî·a‘ miš·šō·p̄ə·ṭê nap̄·šōw — WLC · 31
