Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;… His loving devotion endures forever.

Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy

and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell.

They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, [and] He delivered them from their distress.
𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤓 𐤉𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌
וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר יַצִּילֵֽם׃ לָהֶ֑ם מִ֝מְּצֽוּקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh baṣ·ṣar yaṣ·ṣî·lêm lā·hem mim·mə·ṣū·qō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 6

He led them on a straight path to reach… a city where they could live.

וַ֭יַּֽדְרִיכֵם יְשָׁרָ֑ה בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת אֶל־ עִ֥יר מוֹשָֽׁב׃ way·yaḏ·rî·ḵêm yə·šā·rāh bə·ḏe·reḵ lā·le·ḵeṯ ’el- ‘îr mō·wō·šāḇ — WLC · 7

Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.

יוֹד֣וּ לַיהוָ֣ה חַסְדּ֑וֹ וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו לִבְנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ yō·w·ḏū Yah·weh ḥas·dōw wə·nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯāw liḇ·nê ’ā·ḏām — WLC · 8

For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤔𐤒𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤓𐤏𐤁𐤄 𐤈𐤅𐤁
כִּי־ הִ֭שְׂבִּיעַ נֶ֣פֶשׁ שֹׁקֵקָ֑ה מִלֵּא־ וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ רְ֝עֵבָה טֽוֹב׃ kî- hiś·bî·a‘ ne·p̄eš šō·qê·qāh mil·lê- wə·ne·p̄eš rə·‘ê·ḇāh ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 9

Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains,
𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋
יֹ֭שְׁבֵי חֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת אֲסִירֵ֖י עֳנִ֣י וּבַרְזֶֽל׃ yō·šə·ḇê ḥō·šeḵ wə·ṣal·mā·weṯ ’ă·sî·rê ‘o·nî ū·ḇar·zel — WLC · 10

because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍
כִּֽי־ הִמְר֥וּ אִמְרֵי־ אֵ֑ל נָאָֽצוּ׃ וַעֲצַ֖ת עֶלְי֣וֹן kî- him·rū ’im·rê- ’êl nā·’ā·ṣū wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ ‘el·yō·wn — WLC · 11

He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.

וַיַּכְנַ֣ע לִבָּ֑ם בֶּעָמָ֣ל כָּ֝שְׁל֗וּ וְאֵ֣ין עֹזֵֽר׃ way·yaḵ·na‘ lib·bām be·‘ā·māl kā·šə·lū wə·’ên ‘ō·zêr — WLC · 12

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, [and] He saved them from their distress.
𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌
וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר יוֹשִׁיעֵֽם׃ לָהֶ֑ם מִ֝מְּצֻֽקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh baṣ·ṣar yō·wō·šî·‘êm lā·hem mim·mə·ṣu·qō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 13

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains…

יֽ֭וֹצִיאֵם מֵחֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת וּמוֹסְר֖וֹתֵיהֶ֣ם יְנַתֵּֽק׃ yō·w·ṣî·’êm mê·ḥō·šeḵ wə·ṣal·mā·weṯ ū·mō·ws·rō·w·ṯê·hem yə·nat·têq — WLC · 14

Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.

For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.

כִּֽי־ שִׁ֭בַּר דַּלְת֣וֹת נְחֹ֑שֶׁת גִּדֵּֽעַ׃ וּבְרִיחֵ֖י בַרְזֶ֣ל kî·ši- šib·bar dal·ṯō·wṯ nə·ḥō·šeṯ gid·dê·a‘ ū·ḇə·rî·ḥê ḇar·zel — WLC · 16

Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.

אֱ֭וִלִים פִּשְׁעָ֑ם מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ וּֽ֝מֵעֲוֺֽנֹתֵיהֶ֗ם יִתְעַנּֽוּ׃ ’ĕ·wi·lîm piš·‘ām mid·de·reḵ ū·mê·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·hem yiṯ·‘an·nū — WLC · 17

They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.

נַפְשָׁ֑ם תְּתַעֵ֣ב כָּל־ אֹ֭כֶל וַ֝יַּגִּ֗יעוּ עַד־ שַׁ֥עֲרֵי מָֽוֶת׃ nap̄·šām tə·ṯa·‘êḇ kāl- ’ō·ḵel way·yag·gî·‘ū ‘aḏ- ša·‘ă·rê mā·weṯ — WLC · 18

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble…, [and] He saved them from their distress.

וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם יוֹשִׁיעֵֽם׃ מִ֝מְּצֻֽקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh baṣ·ṣar lā·hem yō·wō·šî·‘êm mim·mə·ṣu·qō·w·ṯê·hem — WLC · 19

He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.

יִשְׁלַ֣ח דְּ֭בָרוֹ וְיִרְפָּאֵ֑ם וִֽ֝ימַלֵּ֗ט מִשְּׁחִיתוֹתָֽם׃׆ yiš·laḥ də·ḇā·rōw wə·yir·pā·’êm wî·mal·lêṭ miš·šə·ḥī·ṯō·ṯå̄m — WLC · 20

Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.

Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.

וְ֭יִזְבְּחוּ זִבְחֵ֣י תוֹדָ֑ה וִֽיסַפְּר֖וּ מַעֲשָׂ֣יו בְּרִנָּֽה׃׆ wə·yiz·bə·ḥū ziḇ·ḥê ṯō·w·ḏāh wî·sap·pə·rū ma·‘ă·śāw bə·rin·nå̄h — WLC · 22

Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters.

יוֹרְדֵ֣י הַ֭יָּם בָּאֳנִיּ֑וֹת עֹשֵׂ֥י מְ֝לָאכָ֗ה רַבִּֽים׃׆ בְּמַ֣יִם yō·wr·ḏê hay·yām bā·’o·nî·yō·wṯ ‘ō·śê mə·lā·ḵāh rab·bīm bə·ma·yim — WLC · 23

They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.

הֵ֣מָּה רָ֭אוּ מַעֲשֵׂ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו בִּמְצוּלָֽה׃׆ hêm·māh rā·’ū ma·‘ă·śê Yah·weh wə·nip̄·lə·’ō·w·ṯāw bim·ṣū·lå̄h — WLC · 24

For He spoke and raised vvv a tempest that lifted the waves [of the sea].

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר וַֽ֭יַּעֲמֵד ר֣וּחַ סְעָרָ֑ה וַתְּרוֹמֵ֥ם גַּלָּֽיו׃׆ way·yō·mer way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ rū·aḥ sə·‘ā·rāh wat·tə·rō·w·mêm gal·lå̄w — WLC · 25

They mounted up to the heavens, [then] sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish.

יַעֲל֣וּ שָׁ֭מַיִם יֵרְד֣וּ תְהוֹמ֑וֹת נַ֝פְשָׁ֗ם תִתְמוֹגָֽג׃ בְּרָעָ֥ה ya·‘ă·lū šā·ma·yim yê·rə·ḏū ṯə·hō·w·mō·wṯ nap̄·šām ṯiṯ·mō·w·ḡāḡ bə·rā·‘āh — WLC · 26

They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.

יָח֣וֹגּוּ וְ֭יָנוּעוּ כַּשִּׁכּ֑וֹר וְכָל־ חָ֝כְמָתָ֗ם תִּתְבַּלָּֽע׃ yā·ḥō·w·gū wə·yā·nū·‘ū kaš·šik·kō·wr wə·ḵāl ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯām tiṯ·bal·lā‘ — WLC · 27

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.

וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר יוֹצִיאֵֽם׃ לָהֶ֑ם וּֽ֝מִמְּצֽוּקֹתֵיהֶ֗ם way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh baṣ·ṣar yō·w·ṣî·’êm lā·hem ū·mim·mə·ṣū·qō·ṯê·hem — WLC · 28

He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.

יָקֵ֣ם סְ֭עָרָה לִדְמָמָ֑ה גַּלֵּיהֶֽם׃ וַ֝יֶּחֱשׁ֗וּ yā·qêm sə·‘ā·rāh liḏ·mā·māh gal·lê·hem way·ye·ḥĕ·šū — WLC · 29

They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.

וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ כִֽי־ יִשְׁתֹּ֑קוּ וַ֝יַּנְחֵ֗ם אֶל־ מְח֥וֹז חֶפְצָֽם׃ way·yiś·mə·ḥū ḵî- yiš·tō·qū way·yan·ḥêm ’el- mə·ḥō·wz ḥep̄·ṣām — WLC · 30

Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.

Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.

וִֽ֭ירֹמְמוּהוּ בִּקְהַל־ עָ֑ם יְהַלְלֽוּהוּ׃ וּבְמוֹשַׁ֖ב זְקֵנִ֣ים wî·rō·mə·mū·hū biq·hal- ‘ām yə·hal·lū·hū ū·ḇə·mō·wō·šaḇ zə·qê·nîm — WLC · 32

He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground,

יָשֵׂ֣ם נְהָר֣וֹת לְמִדְבָּ֑ר וּמֹצָ֥אֵי מַ֝֗יִם לְצִמָּאֽוֹן׃ yā·śêm nə·hā·rō·wṯ lə·miḏ·bār ū·mō·ṣā·’ê ma·yim lə·ṣim·mā·’ō·wn — WLC · 33

[and] fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers

He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell.

They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.

He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.

When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow,

He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless… wasteland.

שֹׁפֵ֣ךְ בּ֭וּז עַל־ נְדִיבִ֑ים וַ֝יַּתְעֵ֗ם לֹא־ דָֽרֶךְ׃ בְּתֹ֣הוּ šō·p̄êḵ būz ‘al- nə·ḏî·ḇîm way·yaṯ·‘êm lō- ḏā·reḵ bə·ṯō·hū — WLC · 40

But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks.

The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.

Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
