Chapter 102
The Prayer of the Afflicted
1
A prayer of one who is afflicted, when he grows faint and pours out his lament before the LORD. 1Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry for help come before You.

Do not hide Your face from me in my day of distress Incline Your ear to me; answer me quickly when I call.

For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn like glowing embers…

My heart is afflicted, and withered like grass; I even forget to eat my bread.

Through my loud groaning my skin hangs on my bones.

I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.

I lie awake; I am like a lone bird on a housetop.

All day long my enemies taunt me; they ridicule me and curse me.

כָּל־ הַ֭יּוֹם אוֹיְבָ֑י חֵרְפ֣וּנִי מְ֝הוֹלָלַ֗י בִּ֣י נִשְׁבָּֽעוּ׃ kāl- hay·yō·wm ’ō·wy·ḇāy ḥê·rə·p̄ū·nî mə·hō·w·lā·lay bî niš·bā·‘ū — WLC · 8

For I have eaten ashes like bread and mixed my drink with tears

כִּי־ אָכָ֑לְתִּי אֵ֭פֶר כַּלֶּ֣חֶם מָסָֽכְתִּי׃ וְ֝שִׁקֻּוַ֗י בִּבְכִ֥י kî- ’ā·ḵā·lə·tî ’ê·p̄er kal·le·ḥem mā·sā·ḵə·tî wə·šiq·qu·way biḇ·ḵî — WLC · 9

because of Your indignation and wrath, for You have picked me up and cast me aside.

מִפְּנֵֽי־ זַֽעַמְךָ֥ וְקִצְפֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֥י נְ֝שָׂאתַ֗נִי וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵֽנִי׃ mip·pə·nê- za·‘am·ḵā wə·qiṣ·pe·ḵā kî nə·śā·ṯa·nî wat·taš·lî·ḵê·nî — WLC · 10

My days are like lengthening shadows, and I wither away like grass.

יָ֭מַי נָט֑וּי כְּצֵ֣ל וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אִיבָֽשׁ׃ כָּעֵ֥שֶׂב yā·may nā·ṭui kə·ṣêl wa·’ă·nî ’î·ḇāš kā·‘ê·śeḇ — WLC · 11

But You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; Your renown endures to all generations…
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤃𐤓 𐤅𐤃𐤓
וְאַתָּ֣ה יְ֭הוָה תֵּשֵׁ֑ב לְעוֹלָ֣ם וְ֝זִכְרְךָ֗ לְדֹ֣ר וָדֹֽר׃ wə·’at·tāh Yah·weh tê·šêḇ lə·‘ō·w·lām wə·ziḵ·rə·ḵā lə·ḏōr wā·ḏōr — WLC · 12

You will rise up and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show her favor…— the appointed time has come.

אַתָּ֣ה תָ֭קוּם תְּרַחֵ֣ם צִיּ֑וֹן כִּי־ עֵ֥ת לְ֝חֶֽנְנָ֗הּ כִּי־ מוֹעֵֽד׃ בָ֥א ’at·tāh ṯā·qūm tə·ra·ḥêm ṣî·yō·wn kî- ‘êṯ lə·ḥen·nāh kî- mō·w·‘êḏ ḇā — WLC · 13

For Your servants delight in her stones and take pity on her dust.

כִּֽי־ עֲ֭בָדֶיךָ רָצ֣וּ אֶת־ אֲבָנֶ֑יהָ וְֽאֶת־ יְחֹנֵֽנוּ׃ עֲפָרָ֥הּ kî- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā rā·ṣū ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇā·ne·hā wə·’eṯ- yə·ḥō·nê·nū ‘ă·p̄ā·rāh — WLC · 14

So the nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth [will fear] Your glory.

ג֭וֹיִם אֶת־ וְיִֽירְא֣וּ שֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה וְֽכָל־ מַלְכֵ֥י הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ אֶת־ כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃ ḡō·w·yim ’eṯ- wə·yî·rə·’ū šêm Yah·weh wə·ḵāl mal·ḵê hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- kə·ḇō·w·ḏe·ḵā — WLC · 15

For the LORD will rebuild Zion; He has appeared in His glory.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤅
כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֣ה בָנָ֣ה צִיּ֑וֹן נִ֝רְאָ֗ה בִּכְבוֹדֽוֹ׃ kî- Yah·weh ḇā·nāh ṣî·yō·wn nir·’āh biḵ·ḇō·w·ḏōw — WLC · 16

He will turn toward the prayer of the destitute; He will not despise their prayer.

פָּ֭נָה אֶל־ תְּפִלַּ֣ת הָעַרְעָ֑ר וְלֹֽא־ בָ֝זָ֗ה אֶת־ תְּפִלָּתָֽם׃ pā·nāh ’el- tə·p̄il·laṯ hā·‘ar·‘ār wə·lō- ḇā·zāh ’eṯ- tə·p̄il·lā·ṯām — WLC · 17

Let this be written for the generation to come, so that a people not yet created may praise the LORD.

זֹ֭את תִּכָּ֣תֶב לְד֣וֹר אַחֲר֑וֹן וְעַ֥ם נִ֝בְרָ֗א יְהַלֶּל־ יָֽהּ׃ zōṯ tik·kā·ṯeḇ lə·ḏō·wr ’a·ḥă·rō·wn wə·‘am niḇ·rā yə·hal·lel- yāh — WLC · 18

For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary; the LORD gazed out from heaven to earth
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤉𐤐 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤈 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑
כִּֽי־ הִ֭שְׁקִיף מִמְּר֣וֹם קָדְשׁ֑וֹ יְ֝הוָ֗ה הִבִּֽיט׃ מִשָּׁמַ֤יִם׀ אֶל־ אֶ֬רֶץ kî- hiš·qîp̄ mim·mə·rō·wm qā·ḏə·šōw Yah·weh hib·bîṭ miš·šā·ma·yim ’el- ’e·reṣ — WLC · 19

to hear a prisoner’s groaning, to release those condemned to death,
𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤒𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤄
לִ֭שְׁמֹעַ אָסִ֑יר אֶנְקַ֣ת לְ֝פַתֵּ֗חַ בְּנֵ֣י תְמוּתָֽה׃ liš·mō·a‘ ’ā·sîr ’en·qaṯ lə·p̄at·tê·aḥ bə·nê ṯə·mū·ṯāh — WLC · 20

that they may proclaim the name of the LORD in Zion and praise Him in Jerusalem,
𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌
לְסַפֵּ֣ר שֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה בְּ֭צִיּוֹן וּ֝תְהִלָּת֗וֹ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ lə·sap·pêr šêm Yah·weh bə·ṣî·yō·wn ū·ṯə·hil·lā·ṯōw bî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 21

when peoples… and kingdoms assemble to serve the LORD.
𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤄𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
עַמִּ֣ים יַחְדָּ֑ו וּ֝מַמְלָכ֗וֹת בְּהִקָּבֵ֣ץ לַעֲבֹ֥ד אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ ‘am·mîm yaḥ·dāw ū·mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ bə·hiq·qā·ḇêṣ la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- Yah·weh — WLC · 22

He has broken my strength on the way; He has cut short my days.

עִנָּ֖ה כֹּחוֹ בַדֶּ֥רֶךְ קִצַּ֥ר יָמָֽי׃ ‘in·nāh kō·ḥō ḇad·de·reḵ qiṣ·ṣar yā·māy — WLC · 23

I say: “O my God, do not take me in the midst of my days! Your years [go on] through all generations…

אֹמַ֗ר אֵלִ֗י אַֽל־ תַּ֭עֲלֵנִי בַּחֲצִ֣י יָמָ֑י שְׁנוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ בְּד֖וֹר דּוֹרִ֣ים ’ō·mar ’ê·lî ’al- ta·‘ă·lê·nî ba·ḥă·ṣî yā·māy šə·nō·w·ṯe·ḵā bə·ḏō·wr dō·w·rîm — WLC · 24

In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.
𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤎𐤃𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊
לְ֭פָנִים יָסַ֑דְתָּ הָאָ֣רֶץ שָׁמָֽיִם׃ וּֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדֶ֣יךָ lə·p̄ā·nîm yā·saḏ·tā hā·’ā·reṣ šā·mā·yim ū·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏe·ḵā — WLC · 25
26
They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on.

הֵ֤מָּה׀ יֹאבֵדוּ֮ וְאַתָּ֪ה תַ֫עֲמֹ֥ד וְ֭כֻלָּם יִבְל֑וּ כַּבֶּ֣גֶד כַּלְּב֖וּשׁ תַּחֲלִיפֵ֣ם וְֽיַחֲלֹֽפוּ׃ hêm·māh yō·ḇê·ḏū wə·’at·tāh ṯa·‘ă·mōḏ wə·ḵul·lām yiḇ·lū kab·be·ḡeḏ kal·lə·ḇūš ta·ḥă·lî·p̄êm wə·ya·ḥă·lō·p̄ū — WLC · 26

But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.

וְאַתָּה־ ה֑וּא וּ֝שְׁנוֹתֶ֗יךָ לֹ֣א יִתָּֽמּוּ׃ wə·’at·tāh- hū ū·šə·nō·w·ṯe·ḵā lō yit·tām·mū — WLC · 27

The children of Your servants will dwell securely, and their descendants will be established before You.”
