Chapter 34

Elihu Confirms God’s Justice

Then Elihu continued…:

אֱלִיה֗וּא וַיַּ֥עַן וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ ’ĕ·lî·hū way·ya·‘an way·yō·marWLC · 1

“Hear my words, O wise men; give ear to me, O men of learning.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤉𐤌

שִׁמְע֣וּ מִלָּ֑י חֲכָמִ֣ים הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ לִֽי׃ וְ֝יֹדְעִ֗ים šim·‘ū mil·lāy ḥă·ḵā·mîm ha·’ă·zî·nū lî wə·yō·ḏə·‘îmWLC · 2

For the ear tests words as the mouth tastes food.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤍 𐤕𐤁𐤇𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤇𐤊 𐤉𐤈𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋

כִּי־ אֹ֭זֶן תִּבְחָ֑ן מִלִּ֣ין וְ֝חֵ֗ךְ יִטְעַ֥ם לֶאֱכֹֽל׃ kî- ’ō·zen tiḇ·ḥān mil·lîn wə·ḥêḵ yiṭ·‘am le·’ĕ·ḵōlWLC · 3

Let us choose for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.

𐤍𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤍𐤃𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤈𐤅𐤁

נִבְחֲרָה־ לָּ֑נוּ מִשְׁפָּ֥ט נֵדְעָ֖ה בֵינֵ֣ינוּ מַה־ טּֽוֹב׃ niḇ·ḥă·rāh- lā·nū miš·pāṭ nê·ḏə·‘āh ḇê·nê·nū mah- ṭō·wḇWLC · 4

For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉

כִּֽי־ אִיּ֣וֹב אָ֭מַר צָדַ֑קְתִּי וְ֝אֵ֗ל הֵסִ֥יר מִשְׁפָּטִֽי׃ kî- ’î·yō·wḇ ’ā·mar ṣā·ḏaq·tî wə·’êl hê·sîr miš·pā·ṭîWLC · 5

Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’

𐤀𐤊𐤆𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤇𐤑𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏

אֲכַזֵּ֑ב עַל־ מִשְׁפָּטִ֥י חִצִּ֣י אָנ֖וּשׁ בְלִי־ פָֽשַׁע׃ ’ă·ḵaz·zêḇ ‘al- miš·pā·ṭî ḥiṣ·ṣî ’ā·nūš ḇə·lî- p̄ā·ša‘WLC · 6

What man is like Job, [who] drinks up derision like water?

𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌

מִי־ גֶ֥בֶר כְּאִיּ֑וֹב יִֽשְׁתֶּה־ לַּ֥עַג כַּמָּֽיִם׃ mî- ḡe·ḇer kə·’î·yō·wḇ yiš·teh- la·‘aḡ kam·mā·yimWLC · 7

He keeps company with evildoers… and walks with wicked men.

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤋𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤏𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉

וְאָרַ֣ח לְ֭חֶבְרָה עִם־ פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן וְ֝לָלֶ֗כֶת עִם־ רֶֽשַׁע׃ אַנְשֵׁי־ wə·’ā·raḥ lə·ḥeḇ·rāh ‘im- pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen wə·lā·le·ḵeṯ ‘im- re·ša‘ ’an·šê-WLC · 8

For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight in God.’

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤍 𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤓𐤑𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

כִּֽי־ אָ֭מַר יִסְכָּן־ גָּ֑בֶר לֹ֣א בִּ֝רְצֹת֗וֹ עִם־ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ kî- ’ā·mar yis·kān- gā·ḇer lō bir·ṣō·ṯōw ‘im- ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 9

10

Therefore listen to me, O men of understanding. Far be it from God to do wrong, and from the Almighty to act unjustly.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤋

לָכֵ֤ן׀ שִׁמְע֫וּ לִ֥י אַ֥נֲשֵׁ֥י לֵבָ֗ב חָלִ֖לָה לָאֵ֥ל מֵרֶ֗שַׁע וְשַׁדַּ֥י מֵעָֽוֶל׃ lā·ḵên šim·‘ū lî ’a·nă·šê lê·ḇāḇ ḥā·li·lāh lā·’êl mê·re·ša‘ wə·šad·day mê·‘ā·welWLC · 10

For vvv according to a man’s deeds He repays him; according to a man’s ways He brings consequences.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤍𐤅

כִּ֤י אָ֭דָם פֹ֣עַל יְשַׁלֶּם־ ל֑וֹ אִ֝֗ישׁ וּֽכְאֹ֥רַח יַמְצִאֶֽנּוּ׃ kî ’ā·ḏām p̄ō·‘al yə·šal·lem- lōw ’îš ū·ḵə·’ō·raḥ yam·ṣi·’en·nūWLC · 11

Indeed, it is true that God does not act wickedly, and the Almighty does not pervert justice.

𐤀𐤐 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤅𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

אַף־ אָמְנָ֗ם אֵ֥ל לֹֽא־ יַרְשִׁ֑יעַ וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י לֹֽא־ יְעַוֵּ֥ת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ ’ap̄- ’ā·mə·nām ’êl lō- yar·šî·a‘ wə·šad·day lō- yə·‘aw·wêṯ miš·pāṭWLC · 12

Who gave Him charge over the earth? Who appointed [Him] [over] the whole world?

𐤌𐤉 𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤋

מִֽי־ פָקַ֣ד עָלָ֣יו אָ֑רְצָה וּמִ֥י שָׂ֝֗ם כֻּלָּֽהּ׃ תֵּבֵ֥ל mî- p̄ā·qaḏ ‘ā·lāw ’ā·rə·ṣāh ū·mî śām kul·lāh tê·ḇêlWLC · 13

14

If He were to set His heart to it and withdraw His Spirit and breath…,

𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅

אִם־ יָשִׂ֣ים לִבּ֑וֹ אֵלָ֣יו יֶאֱסֹֽף׃ רוּח֥וֹ וְ֝נִשְׁמָת֗וֹ אֵלָ֥יו ’im- yā·śîm lib·bōw ’ê·lāw ye·’ĕ·sōp̄ rū·ḥōw wə·niš·mā·ṯōw ’ê·lāwWLC · 14

15

all flesh would perish together and mankind would return to the dust.

𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤂𐤅𐤏 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤐𐤓

כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֣ר יִגְוַ֣ע יָ֑חַד וְ֝אָדָ֗ם יָשֽׁוּב׃ עַל־ עָפָ֥ר kāl- bā·śār yiḡ·wa‘ yā·ḥaḏ wə·’ā·ḏām yā·šūḇ ‘al- ‘ā·p̄ārWLC · 15

16

If you have understanding, hear this; listen to… my words.

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤉

וְאִם־ בִּ֥ינָה שִׁמְעָה־ זֹּ֑את הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינָה לְק֣וֹל מִלָּֽי׃ wə·’im- bî·nāh šim·‘āh- zōṯ ha·’ă·zî·nāh lə·qō·wl mil·lāyWLC · 16

17

Could one who hates justice govern?… Will you condemn the just and mighty One,

𐤄𐤀𐤐 𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤓

הַאַ֬ף שׂוֹנֵ֣א מִשְׁפָּ֣ט יַחֲב֑וֹשׁ וְאִם־ תַּרְשִֽׁיעַ׃ צַדִּ֖יק כַּבִּ֣יר ha·’ap̄ śō·w·nê miš·pāṭ ya·ḥă·ḇō·wōš wə·’im- tar·šî·a‘ ṣad·dîq kab·bîrWLC · 17

18

who says to kings, ‘[You are] worthless!’ and to nobles, ‘[You are] wicked,’

𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤃𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏

הַאֲמֹ֣ר לְמֶ֣לֶךְ בְּלִיָּ֑עַל אֶל־ נְדִיבִֽים׃ רָ֝שָׁ֗ע ha·’ă·mōr lə·me·leḵ bə·lî·yā·‘al ’el- nə·ḏî·ḇîm rā·šā‘WLC · 18

19

who is not partial… to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤊𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤏 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤅

אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ נָשָׂ֨א׀ פְּנֵ֥י שָׂרִ֗ים וְלֹ֣א נִכַּר־ שׁ֭וֹעַ לִפְנֵי־ דָ֑ל כִּֽי־ כֻּלָּֽם׃ מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדָ֣יו ’ă·šer lō- nā·śā pə·nê śā·rîm wə·lō nik·kar- šō·w·a‘ lip̄·nê- ḏāl kî- kul·lām ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏāwWLC · 19

20

They die in an instant, in the middle of the night. The people convulse and pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.

𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤅 𐤓𐤂𐤏 𐤅𐤇𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤂𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤃

יָמֻתוּ֮ רֶ֤גַע׀ וַחֲצ֪וֹת לָ֥יְלָה עָ֣ם יְגֹעֲשׁ֣וּ וְיַעֲבֹ֑רוּ אַ֝בִּ֗יר וְיָסִ֥ירוּ לֹ֣א בְיָֽד׃ yā·mu·ṯū re·ḡa‘ wa·ḥă·ṣō·wṯ lā·yə·lāh ‘ām yə·ḡō·‘ă·šū wə·ya·‘ă·ḇō·rū ’ab·bîr wə·yā·sî·rū lō ḇə·yāḏWLC · 20

21

For His eyes [are] on the ways of a man, and He sees vvv his every step.

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤏𐤃𐤉𐤅

כִּי־ עֵ֭ינָיו עַל־ דַּרְכֵי־ אִ֑ישׁ יִרְאֶֽה׃ וְֽכָל־ צְעָדָ֥יו kî- ‘ê·nāw ‘al- dar·ḵê- ’îš yir·’eh wə·ḵāl ṣə·‘ā·ḏāwWLC · 21

22

There is no darkness [or] deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.

𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤎𐤕𐤓

אֵֽין־ חֹ֭שֶׁךְ וְאֵ֣ין צַלְמָ֑וֶת שָׁ֝֗ם פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ לְהִסָּ֥תֶר ’ên- ḥō·šeḵ wə·’ên ṣal·mā·weṯ šām pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen lə·his·sā·ṯerWLC · 22

23

For God need not… examine a man further [or] have him approach… for judgment.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈

כִּ֤י אֵ֝֗ל לֹ֣א עַל־ יָשִׂ֣ים אִ֭ישׁ ע֑וֹד לַהֲלֹ֥ךְ אֶל־ בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ kî ’êl lō ‘al- yā·śîm ’îš ‘ō·wḏ la·hă·lōḵ ’el- bam·miš·pāṭWLC · 23

24

He shatters the mighty without inquiry and sets up others in their place.

𐤉𐤓𐤏 𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤌

יָרֹ֣עַ כַּבִּירִ֣ים לֹא־ חֵ֑קֶר וַיַּעֲמֵ֖ד אֲחֵרִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם׃ yā·rō·a‘ kab·bî·rîm lō- ḥê·qer way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ ’ă·ḥê·rîm taḥ·tāmWLC · 24

25

Therefore, He recognizes their deeds; He overthrows [them] in the night and they are crushed.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤊𐤀𐤅

לָכֵ֗ן יַ֭כִּיר מַעְבָּֽדֵיהֶ֑ם וְהָ֥פַךְ לַ֝֗יְלָה וְיִדַּכָּֽאוּ׃ lā·ḵên yak·kîr ma‘·bā·ḏê·hem wə·hā·p̄aḵ lay·lāh wə·yid·dak·kā·’ūWLC · 25

26

He strikes them for their wickedness in full view,

𐤎𐤐𐤒𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤌

סְפָקָ֗ם תַּֽחַת־ רְשָׁעִ֥ים בִּמְק֥וֹם רֹאִֽים׃ sə·p̄ā·qām ta·ḥaṯ- rə·šā·‘îm bim·qō·wm rō·’îmWLC · 26

27

because… they turned aside from Him and had no regard for any of His ways.

𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤅

אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ כֵּ֭ן סָ֣רוּ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֑יו לֹ֣א הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃ וְכָל־ דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו ’ă·šer ‘al- kên sā·rū mê·’a·ḥă·rāw lō hiś·kî·lū wə·ḵāl də·rā·ḵāwWLC · 27

28

They caused the cry of the poor to come before Him, and He heard the outcry of the afflicted.

𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤕 𐤃𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤉𐤌

צַֽעֲקַת־ דָּ֑ל לְהָבִ֣יא עָ֭לָיו יִשְׁמָֽע׃ וְצַעֲקַ֖ת עֲנִיִּ֣ים ṣa·‘ă·qaṯ- dāl lə·hā·ḇî ‘ā·lāw yiš·mā‘ wə·ṣa·‘ă·qaṯ ‘ă·nî·yîmWLC · 28

29

But when He remains silent, who can condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation…,

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤈 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋

וְה֤וּא יַשְׁקִ֨ט׀ וּמִ֥י יַרְשִׁ֗עַ וְיַסְתֵּ֣ר פָּ֭נִים וּמִ֣י יְשׁוּרֶ֑נּוּ וְעַל־ יָֽחַד׃ אָדָ֣ם גּ֖וֹי וְעַל־ wə·hū yaš·qiṭ ū·mî yar·ši·a‘ wə·yas·têr pā·nîm ū·mî yə·šū·ren·nū wə·‘al- yā·ḥaḏ ’ā·ḏām gō·w wə·‘al-WLC · 29

30

that godless men should not rule or lay snares for the people.

𐤇𐤍𐤐 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤔𐤉 𐤏𐤌

חָנֵ֗ף אָדָ֥ם מִ֭מְּלֹךְ מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי עָֽם׃ ḥā·nêp̄ ’ā·ḏām mim·mə·lōḵ mim·mō·qə·šê ‘āmWLC · 30

31

Suppose someone says to God, ‘I have endured my punishment; I will offend no more.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤋𐤀

כִּֽי־ הֶאָמַ֥ר אֶל־ אֵ֭ל נָשָׂ֗אתִי אֶחְבֹּֽל׃ לֹ֣א kî- he·’ā·mar ’el- ’êl nā·śā·ṯî ’eḥ·bōl lōWLC · 31

32

Teach me what I cannot see;… if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’

𐤄𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤐

הֹרֵ֑נִי בִּלְעֲדֵ֣י אֶ֭חֱזֶה אַתָּ֣ה אִֽם־ פָּ֝עַ֗לְתִּי עָ֥וֶל לֹ֣א אֹסִֽיף׃ hō·rê·nî bil·‘ă·ḏê ’e·ḥĕ·zeh ’at·tāh ’im- pā·‘al·tî ‘ā·wel lō ’ō·sîp̄WLC · 32

Should God repay you on your own terms when you have disavowed Him…? You must choose, not I; so tell me what you know.

𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕

Men of understanding will declare to me, and the wise men who hear me [will say]:

אַנְשֵׁ֣י לֵ֭בָב יֹ֣אמְרוּ לִ֑י חָ֝כָ֗ם וְגֶ֥בֶר שֹׁמֵ֥עַֽ לִֽי׃ ’an·šê lê·ḇāḇ yō·mə·rū lî ḥā·ḵām wə·ḡe·ḇer šō·mê·a‘ lîWLC · 34

‘Job speaks without knowledge; his words lack insight.’

אִ֭יּוֹב יְדַבֵּ֑ר לֹא־ בְדַ֣עַת וּ֝דְבָרָ֗יו לֹ֣א בְהַשְׂכֵּֽיל׃ ’î·yō·wḇ yə·ḏab·bêr lō- ḇə·ḏa·‘aṯ ū·ḏə·ḇā·rāw lō ḇə·haś·kêlWLC · 35

If only Job were tried to the utmost for answering like a wicked man.

אָבִ֗י אִיּ֣וֹב יִבָּחֵ֣ן עַד־ נֶ֑צַח עַל־ תְּ֝שֻׁבֹ֗ת אָֽוֶן׃ בְּאַנְשֵׁי־ ’ā·ḇî ’î·yō·wḇ yib·bā·ḥên ‘aḏ- ne·ṣaḥ ‘al- tə·šu·ḇōṯ ’ā·wen bə·’an·šê-WLC · 36

For he adds rebellion to his sin; he claps [his hands] among us and multiplies his words against God.”
