Chapter 31

Job’s Final Appeal

[“]I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze [with desire] at a virgin?

כָּרַ֣תִּי בְּ֭רִית לְעֵינָ֑י וּמָ֥ה אֶ֝תְבּוֹנֵ֗ן עַל־ בְּתוּלָֽה׃ kā·rat·tî bə·rîṯ lə·‘ê·nāy ū·māh ’eṯ·bō·w·nên ‘al- bə·ṯū·lāhWLC · 1

For what [is] the allotment of God from above, or the heritage from the Almighty on high?

𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤌

וּמֶ֤ה׀ חֵ֣לֶק אֱל֣וֹהַּ מִמָּ֑עַל וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת שַׁ֝דַּ֗י מִמְּרֹמִֽים׃ ū·meh ḥê·leq ’ĕ·lō·w·ah mim·mā·‘al wə·na·ḥă·laṯ šad·dai mim·mə·rō·mîmWLC · 2

Does not disaster come to the unjust and calamity to the workers of iniquity?

הֲלֹא־ אֵ֥יד לְעַוָּ֑ל וְ֝נֵ֗כֶר לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ hă·lō- ’êḏ lə·‘aw·wāl wə·nê·ḵer lə·p̄ō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wenWLC · 3

Does He not see my ways and count my every step?

If I have walked in falsehood or my foot has rushed to deceit,

𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤔 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄

אִם־ הָלַ֥כְתִּי עִם־ שָׁ֑וְא רַגְלִֽי׃ וַתַּ֖חַשׁ עַל־ מִרְמָ֣ה ’im- hā·laḵ·tî ‘im- šāw raḡ·lî wat·ta·ḥaš ‘al- mir·māhWLC · 5

let God weigh me with honest scales, that He may know my integrity.

𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤁𐤌𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤕𐤌𐤕𐤉

יִשְׁקְלֵ֥נִי צֶ֑דֶק בְמֹאזְנֵי־ אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ וְיֵדַ֥ע תֻּמָּתִֽי׃ yiš·qə·lê·nî ṣe·ḏeq ḇə·mō·zə·nê- ’ĕ·lō·w·ah wə·yê·ḏa‘ tum·mā·ṯîWLC · 6

If my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has followed… my eyes, or if impurity has stuck to my hands,

אִ֥ם אַשֻּׁרִי֮ תִּטֶּ֣ה מִנִּ֪י הַ֫דָּ֥רֶךְ לִבִּ֑י וְאַחַ֣ר הָלַ֣ךְ עֵ֭ינַי מֻאֽוּם׃פ דָּ֣בַק וּ֝בְכַפַּ֗י ’im ’aš·šu·rî tiṭ·ṭeh min·nî had·dā·reḵ lib·bî wə·’a·ḥar hā·laḵ ‘ê·nay mu·ʾūm dā·ḇaq ū·ḇə·ḵap·payWLC · 7

then may another eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.

וְאַחֵ֣ר יֹאכֵ֑ל אֶ֭זְרְעָה וְֽצֶאֱצָאַ֥י יְשֹׁרָֽשׁוּ׃ wə·’a·ḥêr yō·ḵêl ’ez·rə·‘āh wə·ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’ay yə·šō·rā·šūWLC · 8

If my heart has been enticed by my neighbor’s wife, or I have lurked at his door,

𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤇

אִם־ לִ֭בִּי נִפְתָּ֣ה עַל־ רֵעִ֣י אִשָּׁ֑ה אָרָֽבְתִּי׃ וְעַל־ פֶּ֖תַח ’im- lib·bî nip̄·tāh ‘al- rê·‘î ’iš·šāh ’ā·rā·ḇə·tî wə·‘al- pe·ṯaḥWLC · 9

then may my own wife grind [grain] for another, and may other men sleep with her.

𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤕𐤈𐤇𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄

אִשְׁתִּ֑י תִּטְחַ֣ן לְאַחֵ֣ר אֲחֵרִֽין׃ יִכְרְע֥וּן וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ ’iš·tî tiṭ·ḥan lə·’a·ḥêr ’ă·ḥê·rîn yiḵ·rə·‘ūn wə·‘ā·le·hāWLC · 10

For that [would be] a heinous crime, an iniquity to be judged.

𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤆𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌

כִּי־ הוּא זִמָּ֑ה וְהִיא עָוֺ֥ן פְּלִילִֽים׃ kî- hū zim·māh wə·hī ‘ā·wōn pə·lî·lîmWLC · 11

For it is a fire that burns down to Abaddon; it would root out my entire harvest.

כִּ֤י הִ֭יא אֵ֣שׁ תֹּאכֵ֑ל עַד־ אֲבַדּ֣וֹן תְשָׁרֵֽשׁ׃ וּֽבְכָל־ תְּב֖וּאָתִ֣י kî hî ’êš tō·ḵêl ‘aḏ- ’ă·ḇad·dō·wn ṯə·šā·rêš ū·ḇə·ḵāl tə·ḇū·’ā·ṯîWLC · 12

If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or maidservant when they made a complaint against me,

אִם־ אֶמְאַ֗ס מִשְׁפַּ֣ט עַ֭בְדִּי וַאֲמָתִ֑י בְּ֝רִבָ֗ם עִמָּדִֽי׃ ’im- ’em·’as miš·paṭ ‘aḇ·dî wa·’ă·mā·ṯî bə·ri·ḇām ‘im·mā·ḏîWLC · 13

what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?

וּמָ֣ה אֶֽ֭עֱשֶׂה כִּֽי־ אֵ֑ל יָק֣וּם מָ֣ה אֲשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃ וְכִֽי־ יִ֝פְקֹ֗ד ū·māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh kî- ’êl yā·qūm māh ’ă·šî·ḇen·nū wə·ḵî- yip̄·qōḏWLC · 14

Did not He who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same One form us in the womb?

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤌

הֲ‍ֽ֝לֹא־ עֹשֵׂ֣נִי בַ֭בֶּטֶן עָשָׂ֑הוּ אֶחָֽד׃ וַ֝יְכֻנֶ֗נּוּ בָּרֶ֥חֶם hălō- ‘ō·śê·nî ḇab·be·ṭen ‘ā·śā·hū ’e·ḥāḏ way·ḵu·nen·nū bā·re·ḥemWLC · 15

If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail,

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤌𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄

אִם־ אֶ֭מְנַע מֵחֵ֣פֶץ דַּלִּ֑ים אַלְמָנָ֣ה וְעֵינֵ֖י אֲכַלֶּֽה׃ ’im- ’em·na‘ mê·ḥê·p̄eṣ dal·lîm ’al·mā·nāh wə·‘ê·nê ’ă·ḵal·lehWLC · 16

17

if I have eaten my morsel alone, not sharing it with the fatherless—

𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌

וְאֹכַ֣ל פִּתִּ֣י לְבַדִּ֑י וְלֹא־ אָכַ֖ל מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ יָת֣וֹם wə·’ō·ḵal pit·tî lə·ḇad·dî wə·lō- ’ā·ḵal mim·men·nāh yā·ṯō·wmWLC · 17

18

though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided [the widow]—

𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤍𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤁 𐤀𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤄

כִּ֣י מִ֭נְּעוּרַי גְּדֵלַ֣נִי כְאָ֑ב אִמִּ֣י וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן אַנְחֶֽנָּה׃ kî min·nə·‘ū·ray gə·ḏê·la·nî ḵə·’āḇ ’im·mî ū·mib·be·ṭen ’an·ḥen·nāhWLC · 18

19

if I have seen one perish for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a cloak,

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕

אִם־ אֶרְאֶ֣ה א֭וֹבֵד מִבְּלִ֣י לְב֑וּשׁ לָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃ וְאֵ֥ין כְּ֝ס֗וּת ’im- ’er·’eh ’ō·w·ḇêḏ mib·bə·lî lə·ḇūš lā·’eḇ·yō·wn wə·’ên kə·sūṯWLC · 19

20

if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with the fleece of my sheep,

𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤋𐤑𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤂𐤆 𐤊𐤁𐤔𐤉

אִם־ חֲלָצוֹ לֹ֣א בֵרֲכ֣וּנִי יִתְחַמָּֽם׃ וּמִגֵּ֥ז כְּ֝בָשַׂי ’im- ḥă·lå̄·ṣō lō ḇê·ră·ḵū·nî yiṯ·ḥam·mām ū·mig·gêz kə·ḇā·śayWLC · 20

21

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,

𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤐𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓

אִם־ הֲנִיפ֣וֹתִי יָדִ֑י עַל־ יָת֣וֹם כִּֽי־ אֶרְאֶ֥ה עֶזְרָתִֽי׃ בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר ’im- hă·nî·p̄ō·w·ṯî yā·ḏî ‘al- yā·ṯō·wm kî- ’er·’eh ‘ez·rā·ṯî ḇaš·ša·‘arWLC · 21

22

then may my arm fall vvv from my shoulder and be torn from its socket.

𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤉 𐤕𐤐𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤕𐤐𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄

וְ֝אֶזְרֹעִ֗י תִפּ֑וֹל כְּ֭תֵפִי מִשִּׁכְמָ֣ה תִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ מִקָּנָ֥ה wə·’ez·rō·‘î ṯip·pō·wl kə·ṯê·p̄î miš·šiḵ·māh ṯiš·šā·ḇêr miq·qā·nāhWLC · 22

For calamity from God terrifies me, and His splendor I cannot overpower.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋

כִּ֤י אֵ֣יד אֵ֑ל פַ֣חַד אֵ֭לַי וּ֝מִשְּׂאֵת֗וֹ לֹ֣א אוּכָֽל׃ kî ’êḏ ’êl p̄a·ḥaḏ ’ê·lay ū·miś·śə·’ê·ṯōw lō ’ū·ḵālWLC · 23

24

If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,

𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤎𐤋𐤉 𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤉

אִם־ שַׂ֣מְתִּי כִּסְלִ֑י זָהָ֣ב אָמַ֥רְתִּי וְ֝לַכֶּ֗תֶם מִבְטַחִֽי׃ ’im- śam·tî kis·lî zā·hāḇ ’ā·mar·tî wə·lak·ke·ṯem miḇ·ṭa·ḥîWLC · 24

25

if I have rejoiced in my great wealth because my hand had gained so much,

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤁 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤓

אִם־ אֶ֭שְׂמַח כִּי־ רַ֣ב חֵילִ֑י וְכִֽי־ יָדִֽי׃ מָצְאָ֥ה כַ֝בִּ֗יר ’im- ’eś·maḥ kî- raḇ ḥê·lî wə·ḵî- yā·ḏî mā·ṣə·’āh ḵab·bîrWLC · 25

26

if I have beheld the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor,

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤇 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤒𐤓

אִם־ אֶרְאֶ֣ה א֖וֹר כִּ֣י יָהֵ֑ל וְ֝יָרֵ֗חַ הֹלֵֽךְ׃ יָקָ֥ר ’im- ’er·’eh ’ō·wr kî yā·hêl wə·yā·rê·aḥ hō·lêḵ yā·qārWLC · 26

27

so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,

𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤒 𐤋𐤐𐤉

לִבִּ֑י בַּסֵּ֣תֶר וַיִּ֣פְתְּ יָדִ֣י וַתִּשַּׁ֖ק לְפִֽי׃ lib·bî bas·sê·ṯer way·yip̄t yā·ḏî wat·tiš·šaq lə·p̄îWLC · 27

28

this would also be an iniquity to be judged, for I would have denied God on high.

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤇𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋

ה֭וּא גַּם־ עָוֺ֣ן פְּלִילִ֑י כִּֽי־ כִחַ֖שְׁתִּי לָאֵ֣ל מִמָּֽעַל׃ hū gam- ‘ā·wōn pə·lî·lî kî- ḵi·ḥaš·tî lā·’êl mim·mā·‘alWLC · 28

29

If I have rejoiced in my enemy’s ruin, or exulted when evil befell him—

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤉 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤓𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤅

אִם־ אֶ֭שְׂמַח מְשַׂנְאִ֑י בְּפִ֣יד וְ֝הִתְעֹרַ֗רְתִּי כִּֽי־ רָֽע׃ מְצָ֥אוֹ ’im- ’eś·maḥ mə·śan·’î bə·p̄îḏ wə·hiṯ·‘ō·rar·tî kî- rā‘ mə·ṣā·’ōwWLC · 29

30

I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse—

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄

וְלֹא־ נָתַ֣תִּי חִכִּ֑י לַחֲטֹ֣א לִשְׁאֹ֖ל נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ בְּאָלָ֣ה wə·lō- nā·ṯat·tî ḥik·kî la·ḥă·ṭō liš·’ōl nap̄·šōw bə·’ā·lāhWLC · 30

31

if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there… who has not had his fill?’—

𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏

אִם־ מְתֵ֣י אָהֳלִ֑י לֹ֣א אָ֭מְרוּ מִֽי־ יִתֵּ֥ן מִ֝בְּשָׂר֗וֹ לֹ֣א נִשְׂבָּֽע׃ ’im- mə·ṯê ’ā·ho·lî lō ’ā·mə·rū mî- yit·tên mib·bə·śā·rōw lō niś·bā‘WLC · 31

[but] no stranger had to lodge on the street, for my door has been open to the traveler—

𐤋𐤀 𐤂𐤓 𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤇

לֹא־ גֵּ֑ר יָלִ֣ין בַּ֭חוּץ דְּ֝לָתַ֗י אֶפְתָּֽח׃ לָאֹ֥רַח lō- gêr yā·lîn ba·ḥūṣ də·lā·ṯay ’ep̄·tāḥ lā·’ō·raḥWLC · 32

if I have covered my transgressions like Adam by hiding my guilt in my heart,

𐤀𐤌 𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤈𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤉

אִם־ כִּסִּ֣יתִי פְּשָׁעָ֑י כְאָדָ֣ם לִטְמ֖וֹן עֲוֺֽנִי׃ בְּחֻבִּ֣י ’im- kis·sî·ṯî pə·šā·‘āy ḵə·’ā·ḏām liṭ·mō·wn ‘ă·wō·nî bə·ḥub·bîWLC · 33

because I greatly feared the crowds and the contempt of the clans terrified me, so that I kept silent and would not go outside…—

if my land cries out against me and its furrows weep together,

אִם־ אַדְמָתִ֣י תִזְעָ֑ק עָ֭לַי תְּלָמֶ֥יהָ יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃ וְ֝יַ֗חַד ’im- ’aḏ·mā·ṯî ṯiz·‘āq ‘ā·lay tə·lā·me·hā yiḇ·kā·yūn wə·ya·ḥaḏWLC · 38

if I have devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit… of its tenants,

אִם־ אָכַ֣לְתִּי כֹּ֭חָהּ בְלִי־ כָ֑סֶף וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ הִפָּֽחְתִּי׃ בְּעָלֶ֣יהָ ’im- ’ā·ḵal·tî kō·ḥāh ḇə·lî- ḵā·sep̄ wə·ne·p̄eš hip·pā·ḥə·tî bə·‘ā·le·hāWLC · 39

then let briers grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley.” Thus conclude the words of Job.
