Chapter 2

Job Loses His Health

1

On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before [Him].

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤈𐤍 𐤂𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

“Where… have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” [he] replied -, “and walking back and forth in it.”

𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤈𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤈 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤔𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤄𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤄

אֵ֥י מִזֶּ֖ה תָּבֹ֑א וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן מִשֻּׁ֣ט בָּאָ֔רֶץ הַשָּׂטָ֤ן אֶת־ וַיַּ֨עַן יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּֽהּ׃ ’ê miz·zeh tā·ḇō way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’el- haś·śā·ṭān miš·šuṭ bā·’ā·reṣ haś·śā·ṭān ’eṯ- way·ya·‘an Yah·weh way·yō·mar ū·mê·hiṯ·hal·lêḵ bāhWLC · 2

Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered… My servant Job? For [there is] no one on earth like him, a man [who is] blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הַשָּׂטָ֗ן הֲשַׂ֣מְתָּ לִבְּךָ֮ אֶל־ עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּוֹב֒ כִּי֩ אֵ֨ין בָּאָ֗רֶץ כָּמֹ֜הוּ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֧ם וְיָשָׁ֛ר יְרֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְסָ֣ר מֵרָ֑ע וְעֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּת֔וֹ וַתְּסִיתֵ֥נִי ב֖וֹ לְבַלְּע֥וֹ חִנָּֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- haś·śā·ṭān hă·śam·tā lib·bə·ḵā ’el- ‘aḇ·dî ’î·yō·wḇ kî ’ên bā·’ā·reṣ kā·mō·hū ’îš tām wə·yā·šār yə·rê ’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·sār mê·rā‘ wə·‘ō·ḏen·nū ma·ḥă·zîq bə·ṯum·mā·ṯōw wat·tə·sî·ṯê·nî ḇōw lə·ḇal·lə·‘ōw ḥin·nāmWLC · 3

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied… “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.

𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅

ע֣וֹר בְּעַד־ ע֗וֹר יְהוָ֖ה הַשָּׂטָ֛ן אֶת־ וַיַּ֧עַן וַיֹּאמַ֑ר לָאִ֔ישׁ יִתֵּ֖ן וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּעַ֥ד נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ ‘ō·wr bə·‘aḏ- ‘ō·wr Yah·weh haś·śā·ṭān ’eṯ- way·ya·‘an way·yō·mar lā·’îš yit·tên wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer bə·‘aḏ nap̄·šōwWLC · 4

But stretch out… Your hand and strike his flesh and bones,… and he will surely… curse You to Your face.”

אוּלָם֙ שְֽׁלַֽח־ נָ֣א יָֽדְךָ֔ וְגַ֥ע אֶל־ בְּשָׂר֑וֹ עַצְמ֖וֹ וְאֶל־ אִם־ לֹ֥א יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃ אֶל־ פָּנֶ֖יךָ ’ū·lām šə·laḥ- nā yā·ḏə·ḵā wə·ḡa‘ ’el- bə·śā·rōw ‘aṣ·mōw wə·’el- ’im- lō yə·ḇā·ră·ḵe·kā ’el- pā·ne·ḵāWLC · 5

“Very well,” said the LORD… to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.”

הִנּ֣וֹ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־ הַשָּׂטָ֖ן בְיָדֶ֑ךָ אַ֖ךְ אֶת־ שְׁמֹֽר׃ נַפְשׁ֥וֹ hin·nōw way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’el- haś·śā·ṭān ḇə·yā·ḏe·ḵā ’aḵ ’eṯ- šə·mōr nap̄·šōwWLC · 6

So Satan… went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

𐤄𐤔𐤈𐤍 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤊𐤐 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤒𐤃𐤒𐤃𐤅

הַשָּׂטָ֔ן מֵאֵ֖ת וַיֵּצֵא֙ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּ֤ךְ אֶת־ אִיּוֹב֙ רָ֔ע בִּשְׁחִ֣ין מִכַּ֥ף רַגְל֖וֹ עַד קָדְקֳדֽוֹ׃ haś·śā·ṭān mê·’êṯ way·yê·ṣê pə·nê Yah·weh way·yaḵ ’eṯ- ’î·yō·wḇ rā‘ biš·ḥîn mik·kap̄ raḡ·lōw ʿaḏ qā·ḏə·qo·ḏōwWLC · 7

And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ ל֣וֹ חֶ֔רֶשׂ לְהִתְגָּרֵ֖ד בּ֑וֹ וְה֖וּא יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּתוֹךְ־ הָאֵֽפֶר׃ way·yiq·qaḥ- lōw ḥe·reś lə·hiṯ·gā·rêḏ bōw wə·hū yō·šêḇ bə·ṯō·wḵ- hā·’ê·p̄erWLC · 8

Then [Job’s] wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!”

אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ עֹדְךָ֖ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ בָּרֵ֥ךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וָמֻֽת׃ ’iš·tōw wat·tō·mer lōw ‘ō·ḏə·ḵā ma·ḥă·zîq bə·ṯum·mā·ṯe·ḵā bā·rêḵ ’ĕ·lō·hîm wā·muṯWLC · 9

“You speak as a foolish woman speaks,”… he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not… adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

כְּדַבֵּ֞ר אַחַ֤ת הַנְּבָלוֹת֙ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי גַּ֣ם אֶת־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֗יהָ נְקַבֵּל֙ מֵאֵ֣ת הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים הַטּ֗וֹב וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א נְקַבֵּ֑ל הָרָ֖ע בְּכָל־ זֹ֛את אִיּ֖וֹב לֹא־ חָטָ֥א בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו׃פ kə·ḏab·bêr ’a·ḥaṯ han·nə·ḇā·lō·wṯ tə·ḏab·bê·rî gam ’eṯ- way·yō·mer ’ê·le·hā nə·qab·bêl mê·’êṯ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm haṭ·ṭō·wḇ wə·’eṯ- lō nə·qab·bêl hā·rā‘ bə·ḵāl zōṯ ’î·yō·wḇ lō- ḥā·ṭā biś·p̄ā·ṯāwWLC · 10

Job’s Three Friends

Now when Job’s three friends— Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite— heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and sympathize with [Job] and comfort him.

אִיּ֗וֹב אֵ֣ת שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת׀ רֵעֵ֣י אֱלִיפַ֤ז הַתֵּימָנִי֙ וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֔י וְצוֹפַ֖ר הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ כָּל־ הַזֹּאת֮ הָרָעָ֣ה הַבָּ֣אָה עָלָיו֒ אִ֣ישׁ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ וַיִּוָּעֲד֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לָב֥וֹא לָנֽוּד־ ל֖וֹ וּֽלְנַחֲמֽוֹ׃ ’î·yō·wḇ ’êṯ šə·lō·šeṯ rê·‘ê ’ĕ·lî·p̄az hat·tê·mā·nî ū·ḇil·daḏ haš·šū·ḥî wə·ṣō·w·p̄ar han·na·‘ă·mā·ṯî way·yiš·mə·‘ū kāl- haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh hab·bā·’āh ‘ā·lāw ’îš way·yā·ḇō·’ū mim·mə·qō·mōw way·yiw·wā·‘ă·ḏū yaḥ·dāw lā·ḇō·w lā·nūḏ- lōw ū·lə·na·ḥă·mōwWLC · 11

When they lifted up their eyes from afar, they could barely recognize [Job]. They began to weep aloud…, and each man tore his robe and threw dust in the air over his head.

וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ אֶת־ עֵינֵיהֶ֤ם מֵרָחוֹק֙ וְלֹ֣א הִכִּירֻ֔הוּ וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ וַֽיִּקְרְעוּ֙ מְעִל֔וֹ וַיִּזְרְק֥וּ עָפָ֛ר הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃ עַל־ רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- ‘ê·nê·hem mê·rā·ḥō·wq wə·lō hik·kî·ru·hū way·yiḇ·kū way·yiś·’ū qō·w·lām ’îš way·yiq·rə·‘ū mə·‘i·lōw way·yiz·rə·qū ‘ā·p̄ār haš·šā·mā·yə·māh ‘al- rā·šê·hemWLC · 12

Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.

וַיֵּשְׁב֤וּ לָאָ֔רֶץ אִתּוֹ֙ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וְשִׁבְעַ֣ת לֵיל֑וֹת וְאֵין־ דֹּבֵ֤ר דָּבָ֔ר אֵלָיו֙ כִּ֣י רָא֔וּ כִּֽי־ מְאֹֽד׃ הַכְּאֵ֖ב גָדַ֥ל way·yê·šə·ḇū lā·’ā·reṣ ’it·tōw šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wə·šiḇ·‘aṯ lê·lō·wṯ wə·’ên- dō·ḇêr dā·ḇār ’ê·lāw kî rā·’ū kî- mə·’ōḏ hak·kə·’êḇ ḡā·ḏalWLC · 13
