Chapter 18

Bildad: God Punishes the Wicked

Then Bildad the Shuhite… replied:

𐤁𐤋𐤃𐤃 𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍

בִּלְדַּ֥ד הַשֻּׁחִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַ֭יַּעַן bil·daḏ haš·šu·ḥî way·yō·mar way·ya·‘anWLC · 1

“How long until you end… these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.

𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤒𐤍𐤑𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤍𐤃𐤁𐤓

אָ֤נָה׀ עַד־ תְּשִׂימ֣וּן קִנְצֵ֣י לְמִלִּ֑ין תָּ֝בִ֗ינוּ וְאַחַ֥ר נְדַבֵּֽר׃ ’ā·nāh ‘aḏ- tə·śî·mūn qin·ṣê lə·mil·lîn tā·ḇî·nū wə·’a·ḥar nə·ḏab·bêrWLC · 2

Why are we regarded as cattle, as stupid in your sight?

𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌

מַ֭דּוּעַ נֶחְשַׁ֣בְנוּ כַבְּהֵמָ֑ה נִ֝טְמִ֗ינוּ בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ mad·dū·a‘ neḥ·šaḇ·nū ḵab·bə·hê·māh niṭ·mî·nū bə·‘ê·nê·ḵemWLC · 3

You who tear yourself in anger— should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place?

𐤈𐤓𐤐 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤏𐤆𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤊 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤕𐤒 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅

טֹֽרֵ֥ף נַפְשׁ֗וֹ בְּאַ֫פּ֥וֹ אָ֑רֶץ תֵּעָ֣זַב הַ֭לְמַעַנְךָ צ֝֗וּר וְיֶעְתַּק־ מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ ṭō·rêp̄ nap̄·šōw bə·’ap·pōw ’ā·reṣ tê·‘ā·zaḇ hal·ma·‘an·ḵā ṣūr wə·ye‘·taq- mim·mə·qō·mōwWLC · 4

Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; the flame of his fire does not glow.

𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤊 𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤀𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤂𐤄

גַּ֤ם א֣וֹר רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִדְעָ֑ךְ שְׁבִ֣יב אִשּֽׁוֹ׃ וְלֹֽא־ יִ֝גַּ֗הּ gam ’ō·wr rə·šā·‘îm yiḏ·‘āḵ šə·ḇîḇ ’iš·šōw wə·lō- yig·gahWLC · 5

The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out.

𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤊

א֭וֹר בְּאָהֳל֑וֹ חָשַׁ֣ךְ וְ֝נֵר֗וֹ עָלָ֥יו יִדְעָֽךְ׃ ’ō·wr bə·’ā·ho·lōw ḥā·šaḵ wə·nê·rōw ‘ā·lāw yiḏ·‘āḵWLC · 6

7

His vigorous stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up.

𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤑𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤄𐤅

אוֹנ֑וֹ צַעֲדֵ֣י יֵֽ֭צְרוּ עֲצָתֽוֹ׃ וְֽתַשְׁלִיכֵ֥הוּ ’ō·w·nōw ṣa·‘ă·ḏê yê·ṣə·rū ‘ă·ṣā·ṯōw wə·ṯaš·lî·ḵê·hūWLC · 7

8

For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤁𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤊𐤄

כִּֽי־ בְּרַגְלָ֑יו שֻׁלַּ֣ח בְּרֶ֣שֶׁת יִתְהַלָּֽךְ׃ וְעַל־ שְׂ֝בָכָ֗ה kî- bə·raḡ·lāw šul·laḥ bə·re·šeṯ yiṯ·hal·lāḵ wə·‘a·lś- śə·b̲ā·k̲āhWLC · 8

A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him…

𐤐𐤇 𐤉𐤀𐤇𐤆 𐤁𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

פָּ֑ח יֹאחֵ֣ז בְּעָקֵ֣ב צַמִּֽים׃ יַחֲזֵ֖ק עָלָ֣יו pāḥ yō·ḥêz bə·‘ā·qêḇ ṣam·mîm ya·ḥă·zêq ‘ā·lāwWLC · 9

A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path.

𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤅 𐤈𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤃𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤁

חַבְל֑וֹ טָמ֣וּן בָּאָ֣רֶץ וּ֝מַלְכֻּדְתּ֗וֹ עֲלֵ֣י נָתִֽיב׃ ḥaḇ·lōw ṭā·mūn bā·’ā·reṣ ū·mal·kuḏ·tōw ‘ă·lê nā·ṯîḇWLC · 10

11

Terrors frighten him on every side and harass his every step.

𐤁𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤑𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅

בַלָּה֑וֹת בִּֽעֲתֻ֣הוּ סָ֭בִיב וֶהֱפִיצֻ֥הוּ לְרַגְלָֽיו׃ ḇal·lā·hō·wṯ bi·‘ă·ṯu·hū sā·ḇîḇ we·hĕ·p̄î·ṣu·hū lə·raḡ·lāwWLC · 11

12

His strength is depleted, and calamity [is] ready at his side.

𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤃 𐤍𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅

אֹנ֑וֹ יְהִי־ רָעֵ֥ב וְ֝אֵ֗יד נָכ֥וֹן לְצַלְעֽוֹ׃ ’ō·nōw yə·hî- rā·‘êḇ wə·’êḏ nā·ḵō·wn lə·ṣal·‘ōwWLC · 12

13

It devours patches of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs.

𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅

יֹ֭אכַל בַּדֵּ֣י עוֹר֑וֹ בְּכ֣וֹר מָֽוֶת׃ יֹאכַ֥ל בַּ֝דָּ֗יו yō·ḵal bad·dê ‘ō·w·rōw bə·ḵō·wr mā·weṯ yō·ḵal bad·dāwWLC · 13

14

He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors.

𐤉𐤍𐤕𐤒 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤏𐤃𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤕

יִנָּתֵ֣ק מִבְטַח֑וֹ מֵ֭אָהֳלוֹ וְ֝תַצְעִדֵ֗הוּ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ בַּלָּהֽוֹת׃ yin·nā·ṯêq miḇ·ṭa·ḥōw mê·’ā·ho·lōw wə·ṯaṣ·‘i·ḏê·hū lə·me·leḵ bal·lā·hō·wṯWLC · 14

15

Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling.

𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤅 𐤂𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤅𐤄𐤅

מִבְּלִי־ ל֑וֹ תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן בְּ֭אָהֳלוֹ גָפְרִֽית׃ יְזֹרֶ֖ה עַל־ נָוֵ֣הוּ mib·bə·lî- lōw tiš·kō·wn bə·’ā·ho·lōw ḡā·p̄ə·rîṯ yə·zō·reh ‘al- nā·wê·hūWLC · 15

16

The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him wither away.

𐤔𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤋

שָֽׁרָשָׁ֣יו מִ֭תַּחַת יִבָ֑שׁוּ קְצִירֽוֹ׃ וּ֝מִמַּ֗עַל יִמַּ֥ל šā·rā·šāw mit·ta·ḥaṯ yi·ḇā·šū qə·ṣî·rōw ū·mim·ma·‘al yim·malWLC · 16

17

The memory of him perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the land.

𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤅𐤑

זִֽכְרוֹ־ אָ֭בַד מִנִּי־ אָ֑רֶץ ל֝֗וֹ וְלֹא־ שֵׁ֥ם עַל־ פְּנֵי־ חֽוּץ׃ ziḵ·rōw- ’ā·ḇaḏ min·nî- ’ā·reṣ lōw wə·lō- šêm ‘al- pə·nê- ḥūṣWLC · 17

18

He is driven from light into darkness and is chased from the inhabited world.

𐤉𐤄𐤃𐤐𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤉𐤍𐤃𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤁𐤋

יֶ֭הְדְּפֻהוּ מֵא֣וֹר אֶל־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ יְנִדֻּֽהוּ׃ וּֽמִתֵּבֵ֥ל yeh·də·p̄u·hū mê·’ō·wr ’el- ḥō·šeḵ yə·nid·du·hū ū·mit·tê·ḇêlWLC · 18

19

He has no offspring or posterity among his people, no survivor where he once lived.

𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤊𐤃 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤅

לֹ֘א נִ֤ין ל֣וֹ וְלֹא־ נֶ֣כֶד בְּעַמּ֑וֹ וְאֵ֥ין שָׂ֝רִ֗יד בִּמְגוּרָֽיו׃ lō nîn lōw wə·lō- ne·ḵeḏ bə·‘am·mōw wə·’ên śā·rîd̲ bim·ḡū·rāwWLC · 19

20

Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east… tremble in horror.

𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤅 𐤔𐤏𐤓

אַחֲרֹנִ֑ים נָשַׁ֣מּוּ עַל־ י֭וֹמוֹ וְ֝קַדְמֹנִ֗ים אָ֣חֲזוּ שָֽׂעַר׃ ’a·ḥă·rō·nîm nā·šam·mū ‘al- yō·w·mōw wə·qaḏ·mō·nîm ’ā·ḥă·zū śā·‘arWLC · 20

21

Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked [and] the place of one who does not know God.”

𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤎

אַךְ־ אֵ֭לֶּה מִשְׁכְּנ֣וֹת עַוָּ֑ל וְ֝זֶ֗ה מְק֣וֹם לֹא־ יָדַֽע־ אֵֽל׃ס ’aḵ- ’êl·leh miš·kə·nō·wṯ ‘aw·wāl wə·zeh mə·qō·wm lō- yā·ḏa‘- ’êlWLC · 21
