Zophar Rebukes Job
1
Then Zophar the Naamathite… replied:
𐤑𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍
צֹפַ֥ר הַֽנַּעֲמָתִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ וַ֭יַּעַן ṣō·p̄ar han·na·‘ă·mā·ṯî way·yō·mar way·ya·‘an — WLC · 1

“Should this stream of words go unanswered… and such a speaker… be vindicated?
𐤄𐤓𐤁 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤃𐤒
הֲרֹ֣ב דְּ֭בָרִים לֹ֣א יֵעָנֶ֑ה וְאִם־ אִ֖ישׁ שְׂפָתַ֣יִם יִצְדָּֽק׃ hă·rōḇ də·ḇā·rîm lō yê·‘ā·neh wə·’im- ’îš śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim yiṣ·dāq — WLC · 2

Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke?
𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤊𐤋𐤌
בַּ֭דֶּיךָ מְתִ֣ים יַחֲרִ֑ישׁו וַ֝תִּלְעַ֗ג וְאֵ֣ין מַכְלִֽם׃ bad·de·ḵā mə·ṯîm ya·ḥă·rī·šw wat·til·‘aḡ wə·’ên maḵ·lim — WLC · 3

You have said, ‘My doctrine [is] sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’
𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤉 𐤆𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊
וַ֭תֹּאמֶר לִקְחִ֑י זַ֣ךְ הָיִ֥יתִי וּ֝בַ֗ר בְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ wat·tō·mer liq·ḥî zaḵ hā·yî·ṯî ū·ḇar ḇə·‘ê·ne·ḵā — WLC · 4

But if only… God would speak and open His lips against you,
𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤔𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤊
וְֽאוּלָ֗ם מִֽי־ יִתֵּ֣ן אֱל֣וֹהַּ דַּבֵּ֑ר וְיִפְתַּ֖ח שְׂפָתָ֣יו עִמָּֽךְ׃ wə·’ū·lām mî- yit·tên ’ĕ·lō·w·ah dab·bêr wə·yip̄·taḥ śə·p̄ā·ṯāw ‘im·māḵ — WLC · 5

and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you [less] than your iniquity [deserves].

וְיַגֶּד־ לְךָ֨׀ תַּֽעֲלֻמ֣וֹת חָכְמָה֮ כִּֽי־ לְֽת֫וּשִׁיָּ֥ה כִפְלַ֪יִם וְדַ֡ע כִּֽי־ אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַ יַשֶּׁ֥ה לְךָ֥ מֵעֲוֺנֶֽךָ׃ wə·yag·geḏ- lə·ḵā ta·‘ă·lu·mō·wṯ ḥāḵ·māh kî- lə·ṯū·šî·yāh ḵip̄·la·yim wə·ḏa‘ kî- ’ĕ·lō·w·ha yaš·šeh lə·ḵā mê·‘ă·wō·ne·ḵā — WLC · 6

Can you fathom the deep things of God or… discover the limits of the Almighty?
𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤄𐤇𐤒𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤕𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤃𐤉
תִּמְצָ֑א הַחֵ֣קֶר אֱל֣וֹהַ אִ֤ם עַד־ תִּמְצָֽא׃ תַּכְלִ֖ית שַׁדַּ֣י tim·ṣā ha·ḥê·qer ’ĕ·lō·w·ha ’im ‘aḏ- tim·ṣā taḵ·lîṯ šad·day — WLC · 7

They are higher than the heavens— what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol— what can you know?
𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤃𐤏
גָּבְהֵ֣י שָׁ֭מַיִם מַה־ תִּפְעָ֑ל עֲמֻקָּ֥ה מִ֝שְּׁא֗וֹל מַה־ תֵּדָֽע׃ gā·ḇə·hê šā·ma·yim mah- tip̄·‘āl ‘ă·muq·qāh miš·šə·’ō·wl mah- tê·ḏā‘ — WLC · 8

Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤄 𐤉𐤌
מִדָּ֑הּ אֲרֻכָּ֣ה מִנִּי־ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ וּ֝רְחָבָ֗ה יָֽם׃ mid·dāh ’ă·ruk·kāh min·nî- mê·’e·reṣ ū·rə·ḥā·ḇāh yām — WLC · 9

If He comes along to imprison you, or convenes a court, who can stop Him?
𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤄𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅
אִם־ יַחֲלֹ֥ף וְיַסְגִּ֑יר וְ֝יַקְהִ֗יל וּמִ֣י יְשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃ ’im- ya·ḥă·lōp̄ wə·yas·gîr wə·yaq·hîl ū·mî yə·šî·ḇen·nū — WLC · 10

Surely He knows the deceit of men. If He sees iniquity, does He not take note?
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤍
כִּי־ ה֭וּא יָדַ֣ע שָׁ֑וְא מְתֵי־ וַיַּרְא־ אָ֝֗וֶן וְלֹ֣א יִתְבּוֹנָֽן׃ kî- hū yā·ḏa‘ šāw mə·ṯê- way·yar- ’ā·wen wə·lō yiṯ·bō·w·nān — WLC · 11

But a witless man can no more become wise than the colt of a wild donkey can be born a man!
𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤐𐤓𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃 𐤀𐤃𐤌
נָ֭בוּב וְאִ֣ישׁ יִלָּבֵ֑ב וְעַ֥יִר פֶּ֝֗רֶא יִוָּלֵֽד׃ אָדָ֥ם nā·ḇūḇ wə·’îš yil·lā·ḇêḇ wə·‘a·yir pe·re yiw·wā·lêḏ ’ā·ḏām — WLC · 12

As for you, if you direct your heart and lift up your hands to Him,
𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤊𐤐𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅
אַ֭תָּ֗ה אִם־ הֲכִינ֣וֹתָ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֖ כַּפֶּֽךָ׃ אֵלָ֣יו ʾat·tå̄h ’im- hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯā lib·be·ḵā ū·p̄ā·raś·tā kap·pe·ḵā ’ê·lāw — WLC · 13
14
if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents,
𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤒𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤊
אִם־ הַרְחִיקֵ֑הוּ אָ֣וֶן בְּ֭יָדְךָ וְאַל־ עַוְלָֽה׃ תַּשְׁכֵּ֖ן בְּאֹהָלֶ֣יךָ ’im- har·ḥî·qê·hū ’ā·wen bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā wə·’al- ‘aw·lāh taš·kên bə·’ō·hā·le·ḵā — WLC · 14
15
then indeed you will lift up your face without blemish; you will stand firm and unafraid…
𐤀𐤆 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤒 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀
אָ֤ז׀ כִּי־ תִּשָּׂ֣א פָנֶ֣יךָ מִמּ֑וּם וְהָיִ֥יתָ מֻ֝צָ֗ק וְלֹ֣א תִירָֽא׃ ’āz kî- tiś·śā p̄ā·ne·ḵā mim·mūm wə·hā·yî·ṯā mu·ṣāq wə·lō ṯî·rā — WLC · 15
16
For you will forget [your] misery, recalling it only as waters gone by.
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤇 𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤕𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤊𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅
כִּי־ אַ֭תָּה תִּשְׁכָּ֑ח עָמָ֣ל תִזְכֹּֽר׃ כְּמַ֖יִם עָבְר֣וּ kî- ’at·tāh tiš·kāḥ ‘ā·māl ṯiz·kōr kə·ma·yim ‘ā·ḇə·rū — WLC · 16
17
Your life will be brighter than noonday; its darkness will be like the morning.
𐤇𐤋𐤃 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤐𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤒𐤓
חָ֑לֶד יָק֣וּם וּֽ֭מִצָּהֳרַיִם תָּ֝עֻ֗פָה תִּהְיֶֽה׃ כַּבֹּ֥קֶר ḥā·leḏ yā·qūm ū·miṣ·ṣā·ho·ra·yim tā·‘u·p̄āh tih·yeh kab·bō·qer — WLC · 17
18
You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety.
𐤅𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔 𐤕𐤒𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤐𐤓𐤕 𐤕𐤔𐤊𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤈𐤇
וּֽ֭בָטַחְתָּ כִּי־ יֵ֣שׁ תִּקְוָ֑ה וְ֝חָפַרְתָּ֗ תִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ לָבֶ֥טַח ū·ḇā·ṭaḥ·tā kî- yêš tiq·wāh wə·ḥā·p̄ar·tā tiš·kāḇ lā·ḇe·ṭaḥ — WLC · 18
19
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
𐤅𐤓𐤁𐤑𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊
וְֽ֭רָבַצְתָּ וְאֵ֣ין מַחֲרִ֑יד רַבִּֽים׃ וְחִלּ֖וּ פָנֶ֣יךָ wə·rā·ḇaṣ·tā wə·’ên ma·ḥă·rîḏ rab·bîm wə·ḥil·lū p̄ā·ne·ḵā — WLC · 19
20
But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them…; they will hope for their last breath…”

וְעֵינֵ֥י רְשָׁעִ֗ים תִּ֫כְלֶ֥ינָה וּ֭מָנוֹס אָבַ֣ד מִנְהֶ֑ם וְ֝תִקְוָתָ֗ם מַֽפַּח־ נָֽפֶשׁ׃פ wə·‘ê·nê rə·šā·‘îm tiḵ·le·nāh ū·mā·nō·ws ’ā·ḇaḏ min·hem wə·ṯiq·wā·ṯām map·paḥ- nā·p̄eš — WLC · 20
