Chapter 3

Sacrifices Restored

By the seventh month, the Israelites… had settled in their towns, and the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.

𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤎 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤎

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י הַחֹ֣דֶשׁ וּבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּגַּע֙ בֶּעָרִ֑יםס הָעָ֛ם וַיֵּאָסְפ֥וּ אֶחָ֖ד כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ha·ḥō·ḏeš ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yig·ga‘ bɛ·ʿå̄·rī·ms hā·‘ām way·yê·’ā·sə·p̄ū ’e·ḥāḏ kə·’îš ’el- yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 1

Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.

יֵשׁ֨וּעַ בֶּן־ יֽוֹצָדָ֜ק וְאֶחָ֣יו הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים וּזְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בֶּן־ שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל֙ וְאֶחָ֔יו וַיָּקָם֩ וַיִּבְנ֕וּ אֶת־ מִזְבַּ֖ח אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לְהַעֲל֤וֹת עֹל֔וֹת עָלָיו֙ כַּכָּת֕וּב בְּתוֹרַ֖ת מֹשֶׁ֥ה אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ yê·šū·a‘ ben- yō·w·ṣā·ḏāq wə·’e·ḥāw hak·kō·hă·nîm ū·zə·rub·bā·ḇel ben- šə·’al·tî·’êl wə·’e·ḥāw way·yā·qām way·yiḇ·nū ’eṯ- miz·baḥ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ ‘ō·lō·wṯ ‘ā·lāw kak·kā·ṯūḇ bə·ṯō·w·raṯ mō·šeh ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 2

They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed… burnt offerings on it to the LORD— [both] the morning and evening burnt offerings— even though they feared the people of the land.

𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕

וַיָּכִ֤ינוּ הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ עַל־ מְכ֣וֹנֹתָ֔יו וַיַּעַל עָלָ֤יו עֹלוֹת֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם לַֽיהוָ֔ה לַבֹּ֥קֶר וְלָעָֽרֶב׃ עֹל֖וֹת כִּ֚י בְּאֵימָ֣ה מֵעַמֵּ֖י הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת way·yā·ḵî·nū ham·miz·bê·aḥ ‘al- mə·ḵō·w·nō·ṯāw way·ya·ʿal ‘ā·lāw ‘ō·lō·wṯ ‘ă·lê·hem Yah·weh lab·bō·qer wə·lā·‘ā·reḇ ‘ō·lō·wṯ kî bə·’ê·māh mê·‘am·mê hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯWLC · 3

They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily… based on the number prescribed… for each day…

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤂 𐤄𐤎𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤅

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֛וּ אֶת־ חַ֥ג הַסֻּכּ֖וֹת כַּכָּת֑וּב וְעֹלַ֨ת י֤וֹם בְּיוֹם֙ בְּמִסְפָּ֔ר כְּמִשְׁפַּ֖ט דְּבַר־ י֥וֹם בְּיוֹמֽוֹ׃ way·ya·‘ă·śū ’eṯ- ḥaḡ has·suk·kō·wṯ kak·kā·ṯūḇ wə·‘ō·laṯ yō·wm bə·yō·wm bə·mis·pār kə·miš·paṭ də·ḇar- yō·wm bə·yō·w·mōwWLC · 4

After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings and [those] for New Moons and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as all the freewill offerings brought to the LORD.

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤃𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤃𐤁 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

On the first day of the seventh month, [the Israelites] began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, {although the foundation} of the temple of the LORD vvv had not been laid.

𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤃

אֶחָד֙ מִיּ֤וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הֵחֵ֕לּוּ לְהַעֲל֥וֹת עֹל֖וֹת לַיהוָ֑ה וְהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א יֻסָּֽד׃ ’e·ḥāḏ mî·yō·wm haš·šə·ḇî·‘î la·ḥō·ḏeš hê·ḥêl·lū lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ ‘ō·lō·wṯ Yah·weh wə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh lō yus·sāḏWLC · 6

They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, as authorized… by Cyrus king of Persia.

וַיִּ֨תְּנוּ־ כֶ֔סֶף לַחֹצְבִ֖ים וְלֶחָרָשִׁ֑ים וּמַאֲכָ֨ל וּמִשְׁתֶּ֜ה וָשֶׁ֗מֶן לַצִּֽדֹנִים֙ וְלַצֹּרִ֔ים לְהָבִיא֩ אֲרָזִ֤ים עֲצֵ֨י מִן־ הַלְּבָנוֹן֙ אֶל־ יָפ֔וֹא יָ֣ם כְּרִשְׁי֛וֹן עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃פ כּ֥וֹרֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־ פָּרַ֖ס way·yit·tə·nū- ḵe·sep̄ la·ḥō·ṣə·ḇîm wə·le·ḥā·rā·šîm ū·ma·’ă·ḵāl ū·miš·teh wā·še·men laṣ·ṣi·ḏō·nîm wə·laṣ·ṣō·rîm lə·hā·ḇî ’ă·rā·zîm ‘ă·ṣê min- hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn ’el- yā·p̄ō·w yām kə·riš·yō·wn ‘ă·lê·hem kō·w·reš me·leḵ- pā·rasWLC · 7

Temple Restoration Begins

In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began [the work]. They appointed Levites twenty years of age… or older to supervise… the construction of the house of the LORD.

So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah), [and] the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers— all Levites— joined together to supervise… those working… on the house of God.

יֵשׁ֡וּעַ בָּנָ֣יו וְ֠אֶחָיו קַדְמִיאֵ֨ל וּבָנָ֤יו בְּנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָה֙ בְּנֵי֙ חֵֽנָדָ֔ד בְּנֵיהֶ֥ם וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד כְּאֶחָ֔ד לְנַצֵּ֛חַ עַל־ עֹשֵׂ֥ה הַמְּלָאכָ֖ה בְּבֵ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑יםס yê·šū·a‘ bā·nāw wə·’e·ḥāw qaḏ·mî·’êl ū·ḇā·nāw bə·nê- yə·hū·ḏāh bə·nê ḥê·nā·ḏāḏ bə·nê·hem wa·’ă·ḥê·hem hal·wî·yim way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ kə·’e·ḥāḏ lə·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ ‘al- ‘ō·śêh ham·mə·lā·ḵāh bə·ḇêṯ hå̄·ʾɛ̆·lō·hī·msWLC · 9

When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their positions to praise the LORD, as David king of Israel had prescribed.

𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤑𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉

הַבֹּנִ֖ים אֶת־ וְיִסְּד֥וּ הֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֑ה הַכֹּהֲנִ֨ים מְלֻבָּשִׁ֜ים בַּחֲצֹֽצְר֗וֹת וְהַלְוִיִּ֤ם בְּנֵֽי־ אָסָף֙ בַּֽמְצִלְתַּ֔יִם וַיַּעֲמִידוּ֩ לְהַלֵּל֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה עַל־ דָּוִ֥יד מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ יְדֵ֖י hab·bō·nîm ’eṯ- wə·yis·sə·ḏū hê·ḵal Yah·weh hak·kō·hă·nîm mə·lub·bā·šîm ba·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ wə·hal·wî·yim bə·nê- ’ā·sāp̄ bam·ṣil·ta·yim way·ya·‘ă·mî·ḏū lə·hal·lêl ’eṯ- Yah·weh ‘al- dā·wîḏ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl yə·ḏêWLC · 10

And they sang responsively with praise and thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures forever.” Then all the people gave a great shout… of praise to the LORD, because {the foundation} of the house of the LORD had been laid.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤋 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎 𐤄𐤅𐤎𐤃

וַֽ֠יַּעֲנוּ בְּהַלֵּ֨ל וּבְהוֹדֹ֤ת לַֽיהוָה֙ כִּ֣י ט֔וֹב כִּֽי־ חַסְדּ֖וֹ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לְעוֹלָ֥ם וְכָל־ הָעָ֡ם גְדוֹלָ֤ה הֵרִיעוּ֩ תְרוּעָ֙ה בְהַלֵּל֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה עַ֖ל בֵּית־ יְהוָֽה׃ס הוּסַ֥ד way·ya·‘ă·nū bə·hal·lêl ū·ḇə·hō·w·ḏōṯ Yah·weh kî ṭō·wḇ kî- ḥas·dōw ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl lə·‘ō·w·lām wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh hê·rî·‘ū ṯə·rū·ʿå̄h ḇə·hal·lêl Yah·weh ‘al bêṯ- Yah·weh hū·saḏWLC · 11

But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple wept loudly… when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others shouted… joyfully…
