Chapter 29

Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple

1

Hezekiah [was] twenty-five… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine… years. His mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.

𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤕 𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤅

יְחִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ עֶשְׂרִ֤ים וְחָמֵשׁ֙ בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֗ךְ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעֶשְׂרִ֤ים וָתֵ֙שַׁע֙ שָׁנָ֔ה אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם אֲבִיָּ֖ה בַּת־ זְכַרְיָֽהוּ׃ yə·ḥiz·qî·yā·hū ‘eś·rîm wə·ḥā·mêš ben- šā·nāh mā·laḵ mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim wə·‘eś·rîm wā·ṯê·ša‘ šā·nāh ’im·mōw wə·šêm ’ă·ḇî·yāh baṯ- zə·ḵar·yā·hūWLC · 1

And he did [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ אָבִֽיו׃ דָּוִ֥יד עָשָׂ֖ה way·ya·‘aś hay·yā·šār bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ā·ḇîw dā·wîḏ ‘ā·śāhWLC · 2

  • In the first month of the first year of his reign, [Hezekiah] opened and repaired the doors of the house of the LORD.

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤌 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

ה֣וּא הָרִאשׁ֗וֹן בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹנָ֨ה בַשָּׁנָה֩ לְמָלְכ֜וֹ פָּתַ֛ח אֶת־ וַֽיְחַזְּקֵֽם׃ דַּלְת֥וֹת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֖ה hū hā·ri·šō·wn ba·ḥō·ḏeš hā·ri·šō·w·nāh ḇaš·šā·nāh lə·mā·lə·ḵōw pā·ṯaḥ ’eṯ- way·ḥaz·zə·qêm dal·ṯō·wṯ bêṯ- Yah·wehWLC · 3

Then he brought in the priests and Levites and gathered them in the square on the east side.

וַיָּבֵ֥א אֶת־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְאֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיַּֽאַסְפֵ֖ם לִרְח֥וֹב הַמִּזְרָֽח׃ way·yā·ḇê ’eṯ- hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·’eṯ- hal·wî·yim way·ya·’as·p̄êm lir·ḥō·wḇ ham·miz·rāḥWLC · 4

“Listen to me, O Levites,” he said “Consecrate yourselves now and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers. Remove from the Holy Place every impurity.

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤕𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤃𐤄

שְׁמָע֣וּנִי הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָהֶ֖ם הִֽתְקַדְּשׁ֗וּ עַתָּ֣ה וְקַדְּשׁוּ֙ אֶת־ בֵּ֤ית יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹצִ֥יאוּ מִן־ הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ אֶת־ הַנִּדָּ֖ה šə·mā·‘ū·nî hal·wî·yim way·yō·mer lā·hem hiṯ·qad·də·šū ‘at·tāh wə·qad·də·šū ’eṯ- bêṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem wə·hō·w·ṣî·’ū min- haq·qō·ḏeš ’eṯ- han·nid·dāhWLC · 5

For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤓𐤐

כִּֽי־ אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ מָעֲל֣וּ וְעָשׂ֥וּ הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה־ אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ וַיַּֽעַזְבֻ֑הוּ פְנֵיהֶ֛ם וַיַּסֵּ֧בּוּ מִמִּשְׁכַּ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּתְּנוּ־ עֹֽרֶף׃ kî- ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū mā·‘ă·lū wə·‘ā·śū hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh- ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū way·ya·‘az·ḇu·hū p̄ə·nê·hem way·yas·sêb·bū mim·miš·kan Yah·weh way·yit·tə·nū- ‘ō·rep̄WLC · 6

They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. They did not burn incense [or] present burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the God of Israel.

𐤂𐤌 𐤎𐤂𐤓𐤅 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

גַּ֣ם סָֽגְר֞וּ דַּלְת֣וֹת הָאוּלָ֗ם וַיְכַבּוּ֙ אֶת־ הַנֵּר֔וֹת לֹ֣א הִקְטִ֑ירוּ וּקְטֹ֖רֶת לֹא־ הֶעֱל֣וּ וְעֹלָה֙ בַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ לֵאלֹהֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ gam sā·ḡə·rū dal·ṯō·wṯ hā·’ū·lām way·ḵab·bū ’eṯ- han·nê·rō·wṯ lō hiq·ṭî·rū ū·qə·ṭō·reṯ lō- he·‘ĕ·lū wə·‘ō·lāh ḇaq·qō·ḏeš lê·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 7

Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, horror, and scorn, as you can see with your own eyes.

קֶ֣צֶף יְהוָ֔ה וַיְהִי֙ עַל־ יְהוּדָ֖ה וִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיִּתְּנֵ֤ם לִזְוָעָה לְשַׁמָּ֣ה וְלִשְׁרֵקָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר אַתֶּ֥ם רֹאִ֖ים בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ qe·ṣep̄ Yah·weh way·hî ‘al- yə·hū·ḏāh wî·rū·šā·lim way·yit·tə·nêm liz·wå̄·ʿå̄h lə·šam·māh wə·liš·rê·qāh ka·’ă·šer ’at·tem rō·’îm bə·‘ê·nê·ḵemWLC · 8

For behold, this is why our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and daughters and wives are in captivity.

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤉

וְהִנֵּ֛ה זֹֽאת׃ עַל־ אֲבוֹתֵ֖ינוּ נָפְל֥וּ בֶּחָ֑רֶב וּבָנֵ֨ינוּ וּבְנוֹתֵ֧ינוּ וְנָשֵׁ֛ינוּ בַּשְּׁבִ֖י wə·hin·nêh zōṯ ‘al- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū nā·p̄ə·lū be·ḥā·reḇ ū·ḇā·nê·nū ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯê·nū wə·nā·šê·nū baš·šə·ḇîWLC · 9

Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger… will turn away from us.

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅

עַתָּה֙ עִם־ לְבָבִ֔י לִכְר֣וֹת בְּרִ֔ית לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל חֲר֥וֹן אַפּֽוֹ׃ וְיָשֹׁ֥ב מִמֶּ֖נּוּ ‘at·tāh ‘im- lə·ḇā·ḇî liḵ·rō·wṯ bə·rîṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pōw wə·yā·šōḇ mim·men·nūWLC · 10

Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to burn incense.”

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤎

עַתָּ֖ה בָּנַ֕י אַל־ תִּשָּׁל֑וּ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֗ה בָּחַ֣ר בָכֶ֞ם לַעֲמֹ֤ד לְפָנָיו֙ לְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ וְלִהְי֥וֹת מְשָׁרְתִ֥ים ל֖וֹ וּמַקְטִרִֽים׃ס ‘at·tāh bā·nay ’al- tiš·šā·lū kî- Yah·weh bā·ḥar ḇā·ḵem la·‘ă·mōḏ lə·p̄ā·nāw lə·šā·rə·ṯōw wə·lih·yō·wṯ mə·šā·rə·ṯîm lōw ū·maq·ṭi·rîmWLC · 11

Then the Levites set to work: Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah from the Kohathites…; Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel from the Merarites; Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah from the Gershonites;

יְחוּאֵל וְשִׁמְעִ֑יס וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֥י הֵימָ֖ן שְׁמַֽעְיָ֖ה וְעֻזִּיאֵֽל׃ וּמִן־ בְּנֵ֣י יְדוּת֔וּן yə·ḥū·ʾēl wə·šim·ʿīs ū·min- bə·nê hê·mān šə·ma‘·yāh wə·‘uz·zî·’êl ū·min- bə·nê yə·ḏū·ṯūnWLC · 14

When they had assembled their brothers and consecrated themselves, they went in to cleanse the house of the LORD, according to the command of the king by the words of the LORD.

וַיַּֽאַסְפ֤וּ אֲחֵיהֶם֙ אֶת־ וַיִּֽתְקַדְּשׁ֔וּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ לְטַהֵ֖ר בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ כְמִצְוַת־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בְּדִבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה way·ya·’as·p̄ū ’ă·ḥê·hem ’eṯ- way·yiṯ·qad·də·šū way·yā·ḇō·’ū lə·ṭa·hêr bêṯ Yah·weh ḵə·miṣ·waṯ- ham·me·leḵ bə·ḏiḇ·rê Yah·wehWLC · 15

So the priests went inside the house of the LORD to cleanse [it], and they brought out to the courtyard - all the unclean things that they found in the temple of the LORD. Then the Levites took [these things] and carried [them] out to the Kidron Valley.

הַ֠כֹּהֲנִים וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ לִפְנִ֣ימָה בֵית־ יְהוָה֮ לְטַהֵר֒ וַיּוֹצִ֗יאוּ אֵ֤ת לַחֲצַ֖ר יְהוָ֑ה בֵּ֣ית כָּל־ הַטֻּמְאָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר מָֽצְאוּ֙ בְּהֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וַֽיְקַבְּלוּ֙ לְהוֹצִ֥יא חֽוּצָה׃ קִדְר֖וֹן לְנַֽחַל־ hak·kō·hă·nîm way·yā·ḇō·’ū lip̄·nî·māh ḇêṯ- Yah·weh lə·ṭa·hêr way·yō·w·ṣî·’ū ’êṯ la·ḥă·ṣar Yah·weh bêṯ kāl- haṭ·ṭum·’āh ’ă·šer mā·ṣə·’ū bə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh hal·wî·yim way·qab·bə·lū lə·hō·w·ṣî ḥū·ṣāh qiḏ·rō·wn lə·na·ḥal-WLC · 16

They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the LORD. For eight [more] days they consecrated the house of the LORD [itself], finishing on the sixteenth… day of the first month.

Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported, “We have cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the showbread with all its utensils.

Moreover, we have prepared and consecrated… all the articles that King Ahaz in his unfaithfulness cast aside during his reign. They are now in front of the altar of the LORD.”

Hezekiah Restores Temple Worship

Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials and went up to the house of the LORD.

They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats… as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And [the king] commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.

So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests took the blood and splattered it on the altar. They slaughtered the rams and splattered the blood on the altar. And they slaughtered the lambs and splattered the blood on the altar.

Then they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, who laid their hands on them.

And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.

Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres according to the command of David, of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet. For the command had come from the LORD through His prophets.

The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets.

הַלְוִיִּם֙ וַיַּֽעַמְד֤וּ בִּכְלֵ֣י דָוִ֔יד וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים בַּחֲצֹצְרֽוֹת׃ס hal·wî·yim way·ya·‘am·ḏū biḵ·lê ḏā·wîḏ wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm ba·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯWLC · 26

And Hezekiah ordered that the burnt offering be sacrificed on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD and the trumpets began as well, accompanied by… the instruments of David king of Israel.

חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָעֹלָ֖ה לְהַעֲל֥וֹת לְהַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וּבְעֵ֞ת הָֽעוֹלָ֗ה הֵחֵ֣ל שִׁיר־ יְהוָה֙ וְהַחֲצֹ֣צְר֔וֹת הֵחֵ֤ל וְעַ֨ל־ יְדֵ֔י כְּלֵ֖י דָּוִ֥יד מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ḥiz·qî·yā·hū way·yō·mer hā·‘ō·lāh lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ lə·ham·miz·bê·aḥ ū·ḇə·‘êṯ hā·‘ō·w·lāh hê·ḥêl šîr- Yah·weh wə·ha·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ hê·ḥêl wə·‘al- yə·ḏê kə·lê dā·wîḏ me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 27

The whole assembly was worshiping, the singers were singing, and the trumpeters were playing. All this continued until the burnt offering was completed.

When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.

Then King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to sing praises to the LORD in the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises… with gladness and bowed down and worshiped.

Then Hezekiah said, “Now [that] you have consecrated yourselves to the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the LORD.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.

The number of burnt offerings the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams, [and] two hundred lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.

And the consecrated offerings [were] six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep.

𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤍

וְֽהַקֳּדָשִׁ֑ים שֵׁ֣שׁ מֵא֔וֹת בָּקָר֙ שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִֽים׃ וְצֹ֖אן wə·haq·qo·ḏā·šîm šêš mê·’ō·wṯ bā·qār šə·lō·šeṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm wə·ṣōnWLC · 33

However, since there were not enough priests - to skin all the burnt offerings, their Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had consecrated themselves. For the Levites had been more diligent… in consecrating themselves than the priests had been.

רַ֤ק הָי֣וּ לִמְעָ֔ט הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְלֹ֣א יָֽכְל֔וּ לְהַפְשִׁ֖יט אֶת־ כָּל־ הָעֹל֑וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֲחֵיהֶ֣ם וַֽיְּחַזְּק֞וּם עַד־ הַמְּלָאכָה֙ כְּל֤וֹת וְעַ֣ד הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים יִתְקַדְּשׁ֣וּ כִּ֤י הַלְוִיִּם֙ יִשְׁרֵ֣י לֵבָ֔ב לְהִתְקַדֵּ֖שׁ מֵֽהַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ raq hā·yū lim·‘āṭ hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·lō yā·ḵə·lū lə·hap̄·šîṭ ’eṯ- kāl- hā·‘ō·lō·wṯ hal·wî·yim ’ă·ḥê·hem way·yə·ḥaz·zə·qūm ‘aḏ- ham·mə·lā·ḵāh kə·lō·wṯ wə·‘aḏ hak·kō·hă·nîm yiṯ·qad·də·šū kî hal·wî·yim yiš·rê lê·ḇāḇ lə·hiṯ·qad·dêš mê·hak·kō·hă·nîmWLC · 34

Furthermore, the burnt offerings were abundant…, along with the fat of the peace offerings and the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. So the service of the house of the LORD was established.

𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤎𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤅𐤍

וְגַם־ עֹלָ֨ה לָרֹ֜ב בְּחֶלְבֵ֧י הַשְּׁלָמִ֛ים וּבַנְּסָכִ֖ים לָעֹלָ֑ה עֲבוֹדַ֥ת בֵּית־ יְהוָֽה׃ וַתִּכּ֖וֹן wə·ḡam- ‘ō·lāh lā·rōḇ bə·ḥel·ḇê haš·šə·lā·mîm ū·ḇan·nə·sā·ḵîm lā·‘ō·lāh ‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏaṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh wat·tik·kō·wnWLC · 35

Then Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had prepared for the people, because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
