Chapter 17
Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah
1
Asa’s son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel.
𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
בְּנ֖וֹ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּ֑יו וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֖ק עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ bə·nōw yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāw way·yiṯ·ḥaz·zêq ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 1

He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah and put garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.

Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals,

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י עִם־ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט כִּ֣י הָלַ֗ךְ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים בְּדַרְכֵ֞י אָבִיו֙ דָּוִ֤יד וְלֹ֥א דָרַ֖שׁ לַבְּעָלִֽים׃ Yah·weh way·hî ‘im- yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ kî hā·laḵ hā·ri·šō·nîm bə·ḏar·ḵê ’ā·ḇîw dā·wîḏ wə·lō ḏā·raš lab·bə·‘ā·lîm — WLC · 3

but he sought the God of his father and walked by His commandments rather than the practices of Israel.

כִּ֠י דָּרָ֔שׁ לֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אָבִיו֙ הָלָ֑ךְ וּבְמִצְוֺתָ֖יו וְלֹ֖א כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kî dā·rāš lê·lō·hê ’ā·ḇîw hā·lāḵ ū·ḇə·miṣ·wō·ṯāw wə·lō kə·ma·‘ă·śêh yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 4

So the LORD established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah brought him tribute, so that he had an abundance of riches and honor.

יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־ וַיָּ֨כֶן הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ כָל־ יְהוּדָ֛ה וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ לִיהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט מִנְחָ֖ה וַֽיְהִי־ ל֥וֹ לָרֹֽב׃ עֹֽשֶׁר־ וְכָב֖וֹד Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yā·ḵen ham·mam·lā·ḵāh bə·yā·ḏōw ḵāl yə·hū·ḏāh way·yit·tə·nū lî·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ min·ḥāh way·hî- lōw lā·rōḇ ‘ō·šer- wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ — WLC · 5

And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.

In the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat sent his officials vvv Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah to teach in the cities of Judah,

accompanied by certain Levites— Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, vvv and Tob-adonijah— along with the priests Elishama and Jehoram -.

וְעִמָּהֶ֣ם הַלְוִיִּ֗ם שְֽׁמַֽעְיָ֡הוּ וּנְתַנְיָ֡הוּ וּזְבַדְיָ֡הוּ וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֡ל וּשְׁמִרִימוֹת וִֽיהוֹנָתָן֩ וַאֲדֹ֨נִיָּ֧הוּ וְטֽוֹבִיָּ֛הוּ וְט֥וֹב אֲדוֹנִיָּ֖ה וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ אֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע וִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם הַלְוִיִּ֑ם wə·‘im·mā·hem hal·wî·yim šə·ma‘·yā·hū ū·nə·ṯan·yā·hū ū·zə·ḇaḏ·yā·hū wa·‘ă·śā·h·’êl ū·šə·mi·rī·mōṯ wî·hō·w·nā·ṯān wa·’ă·ḏō·nî·yā·hū wə·ṭō·w·ḇî·yā·hū wə·ṭō·wḇ ’ă·ḏō·w·nî·yāh wə·‘im·mā·hem hak·kō·hă·nîm ’ĕ·lî·šā·mā‘ wî·hō·w·rām hal·wî·yim — WLC · 8

They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD. They went throughout the towns of Judah and taught the people.
𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤌
וַֽיְלַמְּדוּ֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְעִ֨מָּהֶ֔ם סֵ֖פֶר תּוֹרַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּסֹ֙בּוּ֙ בְּכָל־ עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיְלַמְּד֖וּ בָּעָֽם׃ way·lam·mə·ḏū bî·hū·ḏāh wə·‘im·mā·hem sê·p̄er tō·w·raṯ Yah·weh way·yā·sōb·bū bə·ḵāl ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh way·lam·mə·ḏū bā·‘ām — WLC · 9

And the dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

Some Philistines also brought gifts and silver as tribute to Jehoshaphat, and the Arabs brought him 7,700… rams and 7,700… goats from their flocks.

- Jehoshaphat grew stronger… and stronger, and he built fortresses and store cities in Judah

וַיְהִ֧י יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל עַד־ לְמָ֑עְלָה וַיִּ֧בֶן בִּירָנִיּ֖וֹת מִסְכְּנֽוֹת׃ וְעָרֵ֥י בִּֽיהוּדָ֛ה way·hî yə·hō·wō·šā·p̄āṭ hō·lêḵ wə·ḡā·ḏêl ‘aḏ- lə·mā·‘ə·lāh way·yi·ḇen bî·rā·nî·yō·wṯ mis·kə·nō·wṯ wə·‘ā·rê bî·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 12

and kept vast supplies in the cities of Judah. He also had warriors… in Jerusalem [who were] mighty men of valor.

These are their numbers according to the houses of their fathers: From Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, and with him 300,000 {}… mighty men of valor;

and next to him, Amasiah son of Zichri, the volunteer for the LORD, and with him 200,000 {}… mighty men of valor.

From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, and with him 200,000 {}… armed with bows and shields;
