Chapter 13
Abijah Reigns in Judah
1
In the eighteenth… year of Jeroboam’s reign, Abijah became king of Judah,
𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄
שְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה בִּשְׁנַ֛ת יָרָבְעָ֑ם לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אֲבִיָּ֖ה וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ עַל־ יְהוּדָֽה׃ šə·mō·w·neh ‘eś·rêh biš·naṯ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām lam·me·leḵ ’ă·ḇî·yāh way·yim·lōḵ ‘al- yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 1

and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah… and Jeroboam.

Abijah went into battle with an army… of 400,000… chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in formation against him with 800,000… chosen [and] mighty men of valor.

Civil War against Jeroboam

Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim and said, “Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel!
𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤓 𐤑𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
אֲבִיָּ֗ה וַיָּ֣קָם מֵעַל֙ לְהַ֣ר צְמָרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שְׁמָע֖וּנִי יָרָבְעָ֥ם וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’ă·ḇî·yāh way·yā·qām mê·‘al lə·har ṣə·mā·ra·yim ’ă·šer bə·har ’ep̄·rā·yim way·yō·mer šə·mā·‘ū·nî yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām wə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 4

Do you not… know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt

Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his master.

יָרָבְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ נְבָ֔ט עֶ֖בֶד שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בֶן־ דָּוִ֑יד וַיָּ֙קָם֙ וַיִּמְרֹ֖ד עַל־ אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ben- nə·ḇāṭ ‘e·ḇeḏ šə·lō·mōh ḇen- dā·wîḏ way·yā·qām way·yim·rōḏ ‘al- ’ă·ḏō·nāw — WLC · 6

Then worthless and wicked men gathered around him… to resist… Rehoboam son of Solomon when [he] was young, inexperienced,… and unable to resist them.
𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤑𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤑𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌
רֵקִים֙ בְלִיַּ֔עַל בְּנֵ֣י וַיִּקָּבְצ֣וּ עָלָ֗יו אֲנָשִׁ֤ים וַיִּֽתְאַמְּצ֖וּ עַל־ רְחַבְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וּרְחַבְעָ֗ם הָ֤יָה נַ֙עַר֙ וְרַךְ־ לֵבָ֔ב וְלֹ֥א הִתְחַזַּ֖ק לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ rê·qîm ḇə·lî·ya·‘al bə·nê way·yiq·qā·ḇə·ṣū ‘ā·lāw ’ă·nā·šîm way·yiṯ·’am·mə·ṣū ‘al- rə·ḥaḇ·‘ām ben- šə·lō·mōh ū·rə·ḥaḇ·‘ām hā·yāh na·‘ar wə·raḵ- lê·ḇāḇ wə·lō hiṯ·ḥaz·zaq lip̄·nê·hem — WLC · 7

And now you think you can resist… the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast army, and you have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.

וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ אַתֶּ֣ם אֹֽמְרִ֗ים לְהִתְחַזֵּק֙ לִפְנֵי֙ מַמְלֶ֣כֶת יְהוָ֔ה בְּיַ֖ד דָוִ֑יד בְּנֵ֣י וְאַתֶּם֙ רָ֔ב הָמ֣וֹן וְעִמָּכֶם֙ זָהָ֔ב עֶגְלֵ֣י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרָבְעָ֖ם עָשָׂ֥ה לָכֶ֛ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’at·tem ’ō·mə·rîm lə·hiṯ·ḥaz·zêq lip̄·nê mam·le·ḵeṯ Yah·weh bə·yaḏ ḏā·wîḏ bə·nê wə·’at·tem rāḇ hā·mō·wn wə·‘im·mā·ḵem zā·hāḇ ‘eḡ·lê ’ă·šer yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ‘ā·śāh lā·ḵem lê·lō·hîm — WLC · 8

But did you not drive out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites? And [did you not] make priests for yourselves as do the peoples of other lands? Now whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull… and seven rams can become a priest of [things that are] not gods.

הֲלֹ֤א הִדַּחְתֶּם֙ אֶת־ כֹּהֲנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ בְּנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן וְהַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַתַּעֲשׂ֨וּ כֹּהֲנִים֙ לָכֶ֤ם כְּעַמֵּ֣י הָאֲרָצ֔וֹת כָּל־ הַבָּ֗א לְמַלֵּ֨א יָד֜וֹ בְּפַ֤ר בֶּן־ בָּקָר֙ שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְאֵילִ֣ם וְהָיָ֥ה כֹהֵ֖ן לְלֹ֥א אֱלֹהִֽים׃ס hă·lō hid·daḥ·tem ’eṯ- kō·hă·nê Yah·weh ’eṯ- bə·nê ’a·hă·rōn wə·hal·wî·yim wat·ta·‘ă·śū kō·hă·nîm lā·ḵem kə·‘am·mê hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ kāl- hab·bā lə·mal·lê yā·ḏōw bə·p̄ar ben- bā·qār šiḇ·‘āh wə·’ê·lim wə·hā·yāh ḵō·hên lə·lō ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 9

But as for us, the LORD is our God. We have not forsaken Him; the priests who minister to the LORD [are] sons of Aaron, and the Levites [attend] to [their] duties.
𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕
וַאֲנַ֛חְנוּ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ וְלֹ֣א עֲזַבְנֻ֑הוּ וְכֹ֨הֲנִ֜ים מְשָׁרְתִ֤ים לַֽיהוָה֙ בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן וְהַלְוִיִּ֖ם בַּמְלָֽאכֶת׃ wa·’ă·naḥ·nū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wə·lō ‘ă·zaḇ·nu·hū wə·ḵō·hă·nîm mə·šā·rə·ṯîm Yah·weh bə·nê ’a·hă·rōn wə·hal·wî·yim bam·lā·ḵeṯ — WLC · 10

Every morning… and every evening… they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the rows of showbread on the ceremonially clean table, and every evening… they light the lamps of the gold lampstand. We are carrying out the requirements of the LORD our God, while you have forsaken Him.
𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤎𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤈𐤄𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅
בַּבֹּֽקֶר־ בַּבֹּ֣קֶר וּבָעֶֽרֶב־ בָּעֶ֣רֶב וּמַקְטִרִ֣ים עֹל֣וֹת סַמִּים֩ וּקְטֹֽרֶת־ לַיהוָ֡ה וּמַעֲרֶ֨כֶת לֶ֜חֶם עַל־ הַטָּה֗וֹר הַשֻּׁלְחָ֣ן בָּעֶ֣רֶב בָּעֶ֔רֶב לְבָעֵר֙ וְנֵרֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ הַזָּהָ֤ב וּמְנוֹרַ֨ת כִּֽי־ אֲנַ֔חְנוּ אֶת־ שֹׁמְרִ֣ים מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וְאַתֶּ֖ם עֲזַבְתֶּ֥ם אֹתֽוֹ׃ bab·bō·qer- bab·bō·qer ū·ḇā·‘e·reḇ- bā·‘e·reḇ ū·maq·ṭi·rîm ‘ō·lō·wṯ sam·mîm ū·qə·ṭō·reṯ- Yah·weh ū·ma·‘ă·re·ḵeṯ le·ḥem ‘al- haṭ·ṭā·hō·wr haš·šul·ḥān bā·‘e·reḇ bā·‘e·reḇ lə·ḇā·‘êr wə·nê·rō·ṯe·hā haz·zā·hāḇ ū·mə·nō·w·raṯ kî- ’ă·naḥ·nū ’eṯ- šō·mə·rîm miš·me·reṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū wə·’at·tem ‘ă·zaḇ·tem ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 11

Now behold, God Himself is with us as [our] head, and His priests with their trumpets sound the battle call against you. O children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”

וְהִנֵּה֩ הָאֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ עִמָּ֨נוּ בָרֹ֜אשׁ וְכֹהֲנָ֛יו וַחֲצֹצְר֥וֹת לְהָרִ֣יעַ הַתְּרוּעָ֖ה עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אַל־ תִּלָּֽחֲמ֛וּ עִם־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־ אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם כִּי־ לֹ֥א תַצְלִֽיחוּ׃ wə·hin·nêh hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘im·mā·nū ḇā·rōš wə·ḵō·hă·nāw wa·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ lə·hā·rî·a‘ hat·tə·rū·‘āh ‘ă·lê·ḵem bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’al- til·lā·ḥă·mū ‘im- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê- ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem kî- lō ṯaṣ·lî·ḥū — WLC · 12

Now Jeroboam had sent [troops] around to ambush from the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah, the ambush was behind them.
𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤎𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌
וְיָֽרָבְעָ֗ם לָב֖וֹא הֵסֵב֙ אֶת־ הַמַּאְרָ֔ב מֵֽאַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וְהַמַּאְרָ֖ב מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām lā·ḇō·w hê·sêḇ ’eṯ- ham·ma’·rāḇ mê·’a·ḥă·rê·hem way·yih·yū lip̄·nê yə·hū·ḏāh wə·ham·ma’·rāḇ mê·’a·ḥă·rê·hem — WLC · 13

When Judah turned and discovered that the battle [was both] before and behind them, they cried out to the LORD. Then the priests blew the trumpets,

and the men of Judah… raised the battle cry. And when [they]… raised the cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

So the Israelites… fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.

Then Abijah and his people struck them with a mighty blow, and 500,000… chosen men of Israel fell slain.

Thus the Israelites… were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.

Jeroboam did not again recover his power during the days of Abijah, and the LORD struck him down and he died.

But Abijah grew strong, married… fourteen… wives, and became the father of twenty-two… sons and sixteen… daughters.
