Chapter 12
Shishak Raids Jerusalem
1
- After Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power, he and all Israel with him forsook the Law of the LORD.
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤊𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤐 𐤏𐤆𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

- In the fifth year of Rehoboam’s reign, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt attacked… Jerusalem

with 1,200… chariots, 60,000 {}… horsemen, and countless… troops who came with him out of Egypt— Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites.

He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.

Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have forsaken Me; therefore, I have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.’”

So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD [is] righteous.”
𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒
שָׂרֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְהַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיִּכָּנְע֥וּ וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יְהוָֽה׃ צַדִּ֥יק׀ śā·rê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·ham·me·leḵ way·yik·kā·nə·‘ū way·yō·mə·rū Yah·weh ṣad·dîq — WLC · 6

When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant… them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.

יְהוָה֙ וּבִרְא֤וֹת כִּ֣י נִכְנָ֔עוּ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֨ה הָיָה֩ אֶל־ שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה׀ לֵאמֹ֛ר נִכְנְע֖וּ לֹ֣א אַשְׁחִיתֵ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֨י כִּמְעַט֙ לָהֶ֤ם לִפְלֵיטָ֔ה חֲמָתִ֛י וְלֹא־ תִתַּ֧ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בְּיַד־ שִׁישָֽׁק׃ Yah·weh ū·ḇir·’ō·wṯ kî niḵ·nā·‘ū ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’el- šə·ma‘·yāh lê·mōr niḵ·nə·‘ū lō ’aš·ḥî·ṯêm wə·nā·ṯat·tî kim·‘aṭ lā·hem lip̄·lê·ṭāh ḥă·mā·ṯî wə·lō- ṯit·taḵ bî·rū·šā·lim bə·yaḏ- šî·šāq — WLC · 7

Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.”

כִּ֥י יִהְיוּ־ ל֖וֹ לַעֲבָדִ֑ים וְיֵדְעוּ֙ עֲב֣וֹדָתִ֔י וַעֲבוֹדַ֖ת מַמְלְכ֥וֹת הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ס kî yih·yū- lōw la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm wə·yê·ḏə·‘ū ‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏā·ṯî wa·‘ă·ḇō·w·ḏaṯ mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ — WLC · 8

So King Shishak of Egypt attacked… Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, [including] the gold shields that Solomon had made.
𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤉𐤔𐤒 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤁 𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄
מֶֽלֶךְ־ שִׁישַׁ֥ק מִצְרַיִם֮ וַיַּ֨עַל עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־ אֹצְר֣וֹת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֗ה וְאֶת־ אֹֽצְרוֹת֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶת־ בֵּ֣ית לָקָ֑ח הַכֹּ֖ל וַיִּקַּח֙ אֶת־ הַזָּהָ֔ב מָגִנֵּ֣י אֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ עָשָׂ֖ה me·leḵ- šî·šaq miṣ·ra·yim way·ya·‘al ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’ō·ṣə·rō·wṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh wə·’eṯ- ’ō·ṣə·rō·wṯ ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- bêṯ lā·qāḥ hak·kōl way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- haz·zā·hāḇ mā·ḡin·nê ’ă·šer šə·lō·mōh ‘ā·śāh — WLC · 9

Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤂𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤒𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕
הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ רְחַבְעָם֙ וַיַּ֨עַשׂ נְחֹ֑שֶׁת מָגִנֵּ֖י תַּחְתֵּיהֶ֔ם וְהִפְקִ֗יד עַל־ יַד֙ שָׂרֵ֣י הָרָצִ֔ים הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים פֶּ֖תַח הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ בֵּ֥ית ham·me·leḵ rə·ḥaḇ·‘ām way·ya·‘aś nə·ḥō·šeṯ mā·ḡin·nê taḥ·tê·hem wə·hip̄·qîḏ ‘al- yaḏ śā·rê hā·rā·ṣîm haš·šō·mə·rîm pe·ṯaḥ ham·me·leḵ bêṯ — WLC · 10

And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would go [with him], bearing [the shields], and [later] they would return them to the guardroom…
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤀
וַיְהִ֛י מִדֵּי־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ ב֥וֹא בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה הָרָצִים֙ בָּ֤אוּ וּנְשָׂא֔וּם וֶהֱשִׁב֖וּם אֶל־ הָרָצִֽים׃ תָּ֥א way·hî mid·dê- ham·me·leḵ ḇō·w bêṯ Yah·weh hā·rā·ṣîm bā·’ū ū·nə·śā·’ūm we·hĕ·ši·ḇūm ’el- hā·rā·ṣîm tā — WLC · 11

Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely… Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.

Rehoboam’s Reign and Death

Thus King Rehoboam established himself in Jerusalem and reigned. [He was] forty-one… years old… when he became king, and he reigned seventeen… years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name… His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.

And Rehoboam did evil… because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ הָרָ֑ע כִּ֣י לֹ֤א הֵכִין֙ לִבּ֔וֹ לִדְר֖וֹשׁ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ס way·ya·‘aś hā·rā‘ kî lō hê·ḵîn lib·bōw liḏ·rō·wōš ’eṯ- Yah·weh — WLC · 14

Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, [are] they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of Iddo the Seer concerning the genealogies? There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout their days.
