Chapter 1

Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom

1

Now Solomon son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and highly exalted him.

𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄𐤅

שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בֶן־ דָּוִ֖יד וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֛ק עַל־ מַלְכוּת֑וֹ וַיהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהָיו֙ עִמּ֔וֹ לְמָֽעְלָה׃ וַֽיְגַדְּלֵ֖הוּ šə·lō·mōh ḇen- dā·wîḏ way·yiṯ·ḥaz·zêq ‘al- mal·ḵū·ṯōw Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāw ‘im·mōw lə·mā·‘ə·lāh way·ḡad·də·lê·hūWLC · 1

Then Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every leader in all Israel— the heads of the families.

שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל לְשָׂרֵי֩ הָאֲלָפִ֨ים וְהַמֵּא֜וֹת וְלַשֹּֽׁפְטִ֗ים וּלְכֹ֛ל נָשִׂ֥יא לְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל רָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָבֽוֹת׃ šə·lō·mōh way·yō·mer lə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl lə·śā·rê hā·’ă·lā·p̄îm wə·ham·mê·’ō·wṯ wə·laš·šō·p̄ə·ṭîm ū·lə·ḵōl nā·śî lə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl rā·šê hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯWLC · 2

And Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon because it was the location of God’s Tent of Meeting, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.

Now David had brought the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.

𐤀𐤁𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌

אֲבָ֗ל דָוִיד֙ מִקִּרְיַ֣ת הֶעֱלָ֤ה אֲר֤וֹן הָאֱלֹהִים֙ יְעָרִ֔ים דָּוִ֑יד בַּֽהֵכִ֥ין ל֖וֹ כִּ֧י נָֽטָה־ אֹ֖הֶל ל֛וֹ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ ’ă·ḇāl ḏā·wîḏ miq·qir·yaṯ he·‘ĕ·lāh ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yə·‘ā·rîm dā·wîḏ ba·hê·ḵîn lōw kî nā·ṭāh- ’ō·hel lōw bî·rū·šā·limWLC · 4

But the bronze altar made by Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, was [in Gibeon] before the tabernacle of the LORD. So Solomon and the assembly inquired of Him there.

𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤋𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤄𐤅

הַנְּחֹ֗שֶׁת וּמִזְבַּ֣ח אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ בְּצַלְאֵל֙ בֶּן־ אוּרִ֣י בֶן־ ח֔וּר שָׂ֕ם לִפְנֵ֖י מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֑ה שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה וְהַקָּהָֽל׃ וַיִּדְרְשֵׁ֥הוּ han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ ū·miz·baḥ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh bə·ṣal·’êl ben- ’ū·rî ḇen- ḥūr śām lip̄·nê miš·kan Yah·weh šə·lō·mōh wə·haq·qā·hāl way·yiḏ·rə·šê·hūWLC · 5

Solomon offered sacrifices there before the LORD on the bronze altar at the Tent of Meeting, [where] he offered a thousand burnt offerings.

𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕

שְׁלֹמֹ֨ה וַיַּעַל֩ שָׁ֜ם לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ הַנְּחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ מִזְבַּ֤ח לְאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד עָלָ֛יו וַיַּ֧עַל אָֽלֶף׃ עֹל֖וֹת šə·lō·mōh way·ya·‘al šām lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’ă·šer ‘al- han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ miz·baḥ lə·’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ ‘ā·lāw way·ya·‘al ’ā·lep̄ ‘ō·lō·wṯWLC · 6

That night God appeared to Solomon and said -, “Ask -, [and] I will give it to you!”

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊

הַה֔וּא בַּלַּ֣יְלָה אֱלֹהִ֖ים נִרְאָ֥ה לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ שְׁאַ֖ל מָ֥ה אֶתֶּן־ לָֽךְ׃ ha·hū bal·lay·lāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm nir·’āh liš·lō·mōh way·yō·mer lōw šə·’al māh ’et·ten- lāḵWLC · 7

Solomon replied to God: “You have shown much loving devotion to my father David, and You have made me king in his place.

𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅

שְׁלֹמֹה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים אַתָּ֗ה עָשִׂ֛יתָ גָּד֑וֹל חֶ֣סֶד עִם־ אָבִ֖י דָּוִ֥יד וְהִמְלַכְתַּ֖נִי תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ šə·lō·mōh way·yō·mer lê·lō·hîm ’at·tāh ‘ā·śî·ṯā gā·ḏō·wl ḥe·seḏ ‘im- ’ā·ḇî dā·wîḏ wə·him·laḵ·ta·nî taḥ·tāwWLC · 8

Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to my father David be fulfilled. For You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤓𐤁 𐤊𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

עַתָּה֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים דְּבָ֣רְךָ֔ עִ֖ם אָבִ֑י דָּוִ֣יד יֵֽאָמֵן֙ כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ הִמְלַכְתַּ֔נִי עַל־ עַ֕ם רַ֖ב כַּעֲפַ֥ר הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ‘at·tāh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm də·ḇā·rə·ḵā ‘im ’ā·ḇî dā·wîḏ yê·’ā·mên kî ’at·tāh him·laḵ·ta·nî ‘al- ‘am raḇ ka·‘ă·p̄ar hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 9

Now grant me wisdom and knowledge, so that I may lead… this people. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤎 𐤏𐤌𐤊

עַתָּ֗ה תֶּן־ לִ֔י חָכְמָ֤ה וּמַדָּע֙ וְאֵֽצְאָ֛ה לִפְנֵ֥י וְאָב֑וֹאָה הַזֶּ֖ה הָֽעָם־ כִּֽי־ מִ֣י יִשְׁפֹּ֔ט אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ס עַמְּךָ֥ ‘at·tāh ten- lî ḥāḵ·māh ū·mad·dā‘ wə·’ê·ṣə·’āh lip̄·nê wə·’ā·ḇō·w·’āh haz·zeh hā·‘ām- kî- mî yiš·pōṭ ’eṯ- haz·zeh hag·gā·ḏō·wl ‘am·mə·ḵāWLC · 10

God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart instead of requesting riches or wealth or honor [for yourself] or death for your enemies— and since you have not even requested long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge to govern My people over whom I have made you king—

𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤊 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤅𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤉𐤊

אֱלֹהִ֣ים׀ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר־ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֡ה יַ֣עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ זֹ֜את הָיְתָ֨ה עִם־ לְבָבֶ֗ךָ וְלֹֽא־ שָׁ֠אַלְתָּ עֹ֣שֶׁר נְכָסִ֤ים וְכָבוֹד֙ וְאֵת֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ שֹׂנְאֶ֔יךָ לֹ֣א וְגַם־ שָׁאָ֑לְתָּ רַבִּ֖ים יָמִ֥ים וַתִּֽשְׁאַל־ לְךָ֙ חָכְמָ֣ה וּמַדָּ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֤ר תִּשְׁפּוֹט֙ אֶת־ עַמִּ֔י עָלָֽיו׃ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִמְלַכְתִּ֖יךָ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer- liš·lō·mōh ya·‘an ’ă·šer zōṯ hā·yə·ṯāh ‘im- lə·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā wə·lō·šā- šā·ʾal·tā ‘ō·šer nə·ḵā·sîm wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ wə·’êṯ ne·p̄eš śō·nə·’e·ḵā lō wə·ḡam- šā·’ā·lə·tā rab·bîm yā·mîm wat·tiš·’al- lə·ḵā ḥāḵ·māh ū·mad·dā‘ ’ă·šer tiš·pō·wṭ ’eṯ- ‘am·mî ‘ā·lāw ’ă·šer him·laḵ·tî·ḵāWLC · 11

therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will also give you riches and wealth and honor unlike… anything given to the kings before you [or]… after you.”

הַֽחָכְמָ֥ה וְהַמַּדָּ֖ע נָת֣וּן לָ֑ךְ אֶתֶּן־ לָ֔ךְ וְעֹ֨שֶׁר וּנְכָסִ֤ים וְכָבוֹד֙ לֹא־ כֵ֗ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ הָ֣יָה לַמְּלָכִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְפָנֶ֔יךָ יִֽהְיֶה־ כֵּֽן׃ לֹ֥א וְאַחֲרֶ֖יךָ ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh wə·ham·mad·dā‘ nā·ṯūn lāḵ ’et·ten- lāḵ wə·‘ō·šer ū·nə·ḵā·sîm wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ lō- ḵên ’ă·šer hā·yāh lam·mə·lā·ḵîm ’ă·šer lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā yih·yeh- kên lō wə·’a·ḥă·re·ḵāWLC · 12

So Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place in Gibeon, from before the Tent of Meeting, and he reigned over Israel.

Solomon’s Riches

Solomon accumulated - - 1,400… chariots and 12,000… horses, which he stationed in the chariot cities and also with [him] in Jerusalem.

שְׁלֹמֹה֮ וַיֶּאֱסֹ֣ף רֶ֣כֶב וּפָרָשִׁים֒ וַֽיְהִי־ ל֗וֹ אֶ֤לֶף וְאַרְבַּע־ מֵאוֹת֙ רֶ֔כֶב וּשְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף פָּרָשִׁ֑ים וַיַּנִּיחֵם֙ הָרֶ֔כֶב בְּעָרֵ֣י וְעִם־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ šə·lō·mōh way·ye·’ĕ·sōp̄ re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šîm way·hî- lōw ’e·lep̄ wə·’ar·ba‘- mê·’ō·wṯ re·ḵeḇ ū·šə·nêm- ‘ā·śār ’e·lep̄ pā·rā·šîm way·yan·nî·ḥêm hā·re·ḵeḇ bə·‘ā·rê wə·‘im- ham·me·leḵ bî·rū·šā·limWLC · 14

The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as abundant as sycamore in the foothills.

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן הַכֶּ֧סֶף וְאֶת־ הַזָּהָ֛ב בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם כָּאֲבָנִ֑ים וְאֵ֣ת נָתַ֛ן הָאֲרָזִ֗ים לָרֹֽב׃ כַּשִּׁקְמִ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־ בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- way·yit·tên hak·ke·sep̄ wə·’eṯ- haz·zā·hāḇ bî·rū·šā·lim kā·’ă·ḇā·nîm wə·’êṯ nā·ṯan hā·’ă·rā·zîm lā·rōḇ kaš·šiq·mîm ’ă·šer- baš·šə·p̄ê·lāhWLC · 15

Solomon’s… horses were imported from Egypt and Kue; the royal merchants purchased them… from Kue.

A chariot could be imported… from Egypt for six hundred [shekels] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. Likewise, [they] exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Aram.
