Chapter 20

The Capture of Rabbah

  • In the spring…, at the time when kings march out to war, Joab led out the army… and ravaged the land of the Ammonites… He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. And Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it.

וַיְהִ֡י לְעֵת֩ תְּשׁוּבַ֨ת הַשָּׁנָ֜ה לְעֵ֣ת׀ הַמְּלָכִ֗ים צֵ֣את יוֹאָב֩ אֶת־ וַיִּנְהַ֣ג חֵ֨יל הַצָּבָ֜א וַיַּשְׁחֵ֣ת׀ אֶ֣רֶץ אֶת־ בְּנֵֽי־ עַמּ֗וֹן וַיָּבֹא֙ רַבָּ֔ה וַיָּ֣צַר אֶת־ וְדָוִ֖יד יֹשֵׁ֣ב בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם יוֹאָ֛ב אֶת־ וַיַּ֥ךְ רַבָּ֖ה וַיֶּֽהֶרְסֶֽהָ׃ way·hî lə·‘êṯ tə·šū·ḇaṯ haš·šā·nāh lə·‘êṯ ham·mə·lā·ḵîm ṣêṯ yō·w·’āḇ ’eṯ- way·yin·haḡ ḥêl haṣ·ṣā·ḇā way·yaš·ḥêṯ ’e·reṣ ’eṯ- bə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn way·yā·ḇō rab·bāh way·yā·ṣar ’eṯ- wə·ḏā·wîḏ yō·šêḇ bî·rū·šā·lim yō·w·’āḇ ’eṯ- way·yaḵ rab·bāh way·ye·her·se·hāWLC · 1

Then David took the crown from the head of their king. It was found to weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount… of plunder from the city.

דָּוִ֣יד אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֣ח עֲטֶֽרֶת־ מֵעַ֨ל רֹאשׁ֜וֹ מַלְכָּם֩ וַֽיִּמְצָאָ֣הּ׀ מִשְׁקַ֣ל כִּכַּר־ זָהָ֗ב וּבָהּ֙ יְקָרָ֔ה אֶ֣בֶן וַתְּהִ֖י עַל־ דָּוִ֑יד רֹ֣אשׁ הוֹצִ֖יא הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃ וּשְׁלַ֥ל הָעִ֛יר dā·wîḏ ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ ‘ă·ṭe·reṯ- mê·‘al rō·šōw mal·kām way·yim·ṣā·’āh miš·qal kik·kar- zā·hāḇ ū·ḇāh yə·qā·rāh ’e·ḇen wat·tə·hî ‘al- dā·wîḏ rōš hō·w·ṣî har·bêh mə·’ōḏ ū·šə·lal hā·‘îrWLC · 2

  • [David] brought out the people who [were] there and put [them to work] with saws, iron picks, and axes. And [he] did the same to all the Ammonite… cities. Then [David] and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

וְאֶת־ הוֹצִ֗יא הָעָ֨ם אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֜הּ וַיָּ֨שַׂר בַּמְּגֵרָ֜ה הַבַּרְזֶל֙ וּבַחֲרִיצֵ֤י וּבַמְּגֵר֔וֹת דָוִ֔יד יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה וְכֵן֙ לְכֹ֖ל בְנֵי־ עַמּ֑וֹן עָרֵ֣י דָּוִ֛יד וְכָל־ הָעָ֖ם וַיָּ֧שָׁב יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ wə·’eṯ- hō·w·ṣî hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- bāh way·yā·śar bam·mə·ḡê·rāh hab·bar·zel ū·ḇa·ḥă·rî·ṣê ū·ḇam·mə·ḡê·rō·wṯ ḏā·wîḏ ya·‘ă·śeh wə·ḵên lə·ḵōl ḇə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn ‘ā·rê dā·wîḏ wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām way·yā·šāḇ yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 3

Battles against the Philistines

Some time later…, war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤌 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤆𐤓 𐤀𐤆 𐤎𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤎𐤐𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤅

וַיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵיכֵ֔ן מִלְחָמָ֛ה וַתַּעֲמֹ֧ד עִם־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים בְּגֶ֖זֶר אָ֣ז סִבְּכַ֣י הַחֻֽשָׁתִ֗י אֶת־ הִכָּ֞ה סִפַּ֛י מִילִדֵ֥י הָרְפָאִ֖ים וַיִּכָּנֵֽעוּ׃ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê·ḵên mil·ḥā·māh wat·ta·‘ă·mōḏ ‘im- pə·liš·tîm bə·ḡe·zer ’āz sib·bə·ḵay ha·ḥu·šā·ṯî ’eṯ- hik·kāh sip·pay mî·li·ḏê hā·rə·p̄ā·’îm way·yik·kā·nê·‘ūWLC · 4

Once again there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

ע֥וֹד וַתְּהִי־ מִלְחָמָ֖ה אֶת־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים אֶלְחָנָ֣ן בֶּן־ יָעוּר אֶת־ וַיַּ֞ךְ לַחְמִי֙ אֲחִי֙ גָּלְיָ֣ת הַגִּתִּ֔י וְעֵ֣ץ חֲנִית֔וֹ אֹרְגִֽים׃ כִּמְנ֖וֹר ‘ō·wḏ wat·tə·hî- mil·ḥā·māh ’eṯ- pə·liš·tîm ’el·ḥā·nān ben- yå̄·ʿūr ’eṯ- way·yaḵ laḥ·mî ’ă·ḥî gā·lə·yāṯ hag·git·tî wə·‘êṣ ḥă·nî·ṯōw ’ō·rə·ḡîm kim·nō·wrWLC · 5

And there was also a battle at Gath, where there was a man of [great] stature with six fingers on each hand and six [toes on each foot]— twenty-four in all… He too was descended from Rapha,

𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤂𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤔𐤔 𐤅𐤀𐤑𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤍𐤅𐤋𐤃 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤐𐤀

וַתְּהִי־ ע֥וֹד מִלְחָמָ֖ה בְּגַ֑ת וַיְהִ֣י׀ אִ֣ישׁ מִדָּ֗ה שֵׁשׁ־ וְאֶצְבְּעֹתָ֤יו וָשֵׁשׁ֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים וְאַרְבַּ֔ע ה֖וּא וְגַם־ נוֹלַ֥ד לְהָרָפָֽא׃ wat·tə·hî- ‘ō·wḏ mil·ḥā·māh bə·ḡaṯ way·hî ’îš mid·dāh šêš- wə·’eṣ·bə·‘ō·ṯāw wā·šêš ‘eś·rîm wə·’ar·ba‘ hū wə·ḡam- nō·w·laḏ lə·hā·rā·p̄āWLC · 6

and when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of David’s brother Shimei killed him.

וַיְחָרֵ֖ף אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן בֶּן־ דָוִֽיד׃ אֲחִ֥י שִׁמְעָ֖א וַיַּכֵּ֙הוּ֙ way·ḥā·rêp̄ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān ben- ḏā·wîḏ ’ă·ḥî šim·‘ā way·yak·kê·hūWLC · 7

So these descendants of Rapha in Gath fell at the hands of David… and his servants.
