Chapter 15

Preparing to Move the Ark

1

David constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤋𐤅

וַיַּֽעַשׂ־ בָתִּ֖ים ל֥וֹ בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֑יד וַיָּ֤כֶן מָקוֹם֙ לַֽאֲר֣וֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֶּט־ אֹֽהֶל׃ ל֖וֹ way·ya·‘aś- ḇāt·tîm lōw bə·‘îr dā·wîḏ way·yā·ḵen mā·qō·wm la·’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yeṭ- ’ō·hel lōwWLC · 1

Then David said, “No one but… the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before Him forever.”

And David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.

Then he gathered together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:

David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.

𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤃𐤅𐤒 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤃𐤁

דָוִ֔יד וַיִּקְרָ֣א הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים לְצָד֥וֹק וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֖ר וְלַלְוִיִּ֗ם לְאֽוּרִיאֵ֤ל עֲשָׂיָה֙ וְיוֹאֵ֣ל שְׁמַֽעְיָ֔ה וֶאֱלִיאֵ֖ל וְעַמִּינָדָֽב׃ ḏā·wîḏ way·yiq·rā hak·kō·hă·nîm lə·ṣā·ḏō·wq ū·lə·’eḇ·yā·ṯār wə·lal·wî·yim lə·’ū·rî·’êl ‘ă·śā·yāh wə·yō·w·’êl šə·ma‘·yāh we·’ĕ·lî·’êl wə·‘am·mî·nā·ḏāḇWLC · 11

And he said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families. You and your relatives must consecrate yourselves so that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to [the place] I have prepared for it.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם אַתֶּ֛ם רָאשֵׁ֥י לַלְוִיִּ֑ם הָאָב֖וֹת אַתֶּ֣ם וַאֲחֵיכֶ֔ם הִֽתְקַדְּשׁוּ֙ וְהַֽעֲלִיתֶ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֤וֹן יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶל־ הֲכִינ֖וֹתִי לֽוֹ׃ way·yō·mer lā·hem ’at·tem rā·šê lal·wî·yim hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ ’at·tem wa·’ă·ḥê·ḵem hiṯ·qad·də·šū wə·ha·‘ă·lî·ṯem ’êṯ ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’el- hă·ḵî·nō·w·ṯî lōwWLC · 12

It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God burst forth in anger against us. For we did not consult Him about the proper order.”

כִּ֛י אַתֶּ֑ם לֹ֣א לְמַבָּרִ֥אשׁוֹנָ֖ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ פָּרַ֨ץ בָּ֔נוּ כִּי־ לֹ֥א דְרַשְׁנֻ֖הוּ כַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ kî ’at·tem lō lə·mab·bā·ri·šō·w·nāh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū pā·raṣ bā·nū kî- lō ḏə·raš·nu·hū kam·miš·pāṭWLC · 13

The Priests and Levites Carry the Ark

So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel.

𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיִּֽתְקַדְּשׁ֔וּ לְהַעֲל֕וֹת אֶת־ אֲר֥וֹן יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·hal·wî·yim way·yiṯ·qad·də·šū lə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 14

And the Levites… carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles…, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.

בְנֵֽי־ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֵ֚ת וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ אֲר֣וֹן הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים בִּכְתֵפָ֥ם בַּמֹּט֖וֹת עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃פ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר מֹשֶׁ֖ה צִוָּ֥ה כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה ḇə·nê- hal·wî·yim ’êṯ way·yiś·’ū ’ă·rō·wn hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm biḵ·ṯê·p̄ām bam·mō·ṭō·wṯ ‘ă·lê·hem ka·’ă·šer mō·šeh ṣiw·wāh kiḏ·ḇar Yah·wehWLC · 15

David also told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their relatives as singers to lift up their voices with joy, accompanied by musical instruments— harps, lyres, and cymbals…

𐤃𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄𐤐 𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤏𐤉𐤌

דָּוִיד֮ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְשָׂרֵ֣י הַלְוִיִּם֒ לְהַֽעֲמִ֗יד אֶת־ אֲחֵיהֶם֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים לְהָרִֽים־ בְּק֖וֹל לְשִׂמְחָֽה׃פ שִׁ֛יר בִּכְלֵי־ נְבָלִ֥ים וְכִנֹּר֖וֹת וּמְצִלְתָּ֑יִם מַשְׁמִיעִ֥ים dā·wîḏ way·yō·mer lə·śā·rê hal·wî·yim lə·ha·‘ă·mîḏ ’eṯ- ’ă·ḥê·hem ham·šō·rə·rîm lə·hā·rîm- bə·qō·wl lə·śim·ḥāh šîr biḵ·lê- nə·ḇā·lîm wə·ḵin·nō·rō·wṯ ū·mə·ṣil·tā·yim maš·mî·‘îmWLC · 16

So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his brothers, Asaph son of Berechiah; from their brothers the Merarites…, Ethan son of Kushaiah;

𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤒𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅

הַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֵ֚ת וַיַּעֲמִ֣ידוּ הֵימָ֣ן בֶּן־ יוֹאֵ֔ל וּמִ֨ן־ אֶחָ֔יו אָסָ֖ף בֶּן־ בֶּֽרֶכְיָ֑הוּס וּמִן־ אֲחֵיהֶ֔ם בְּנֵ֤י מְרָרִי֙ אֵיתָ֖ן בֶּן־ קֽוּשָׁיָֽהוּ׃ hal·wî·yim ’êṯ way·ya·‘ă·mî·ḏū hê·mān ben- yō·w·’êl ū·min- ’e·ḥāw ’ā·sāp̄ ben- bɛ·rɛḵ·yå̄·hūs ū·min- ’ă·ḥê·hem bə·nê mə·rā·rî ’ê·ṯān ben- qū·šā·yā·hūWLC · 17

and with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers vvv Obed-edom and Jeiel.

וְעִמָּהֶ֖ם אֲחֵיהֶ֣ם הַמִּשְׁנִ֑ים זְכַרְיָ֡הוּ בֵּ֡ן וְיַֽעֲזִיאֵ֡ל וּשְׁמִֽירָמ֡וֹת וִיחִיאֵ֣ל׀ וְעֻנִּ֡י אֱלִיאָ֡ב וּבְנָיָ֡הוּ וּמַֽעֲשֵׂיָ֡הוּ וּמַתִּתְיָהוּ֩ וֶאֱלִ֨יפְלֵ֜הוּ וּמִקְנֵיָ֨הוּ הַשֹּׁעֲרִֽים׃ וְעֹבֵ֥ד אֱדֹ֛ם וִֽיעִיאֵ֖ל wə·‘im·mā·hem ’ă·ḥê·hem ham·miš·nîm zə·ḵar·yā·hū bên wə·ya·‘ă·zî·’êl ū·šə·mî·rā·mō·wṯ wî·ḥî·’êl wə·‘un·nî ’ĕ·lî·’āḇ ū·ḇə·nā·yā·hū ū·ma·‘ă·śê·yā·hū ū·mat·tiṯ·yā·hū we·’ĕ·lî·p̄ə·lê·hū ū·miq·nê·yā·hū haš·šō·‘ă·rîm wə·‘ō·ḇêḏ ’ĕ·ḏōm wî·‘î·’êlWLC · 18

The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals.

So David, the elders of Israel, and the commanders of thousands went with rejoicing to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house vvv of Obed-edom.
