Chapter 8

The Shunammite’s Land Restored

Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son… he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed that a seven-year… famine will come to the land.”

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וֶאֱלִישָׁ֡ע דִּבֶּ֣ר אֶל־ הָאִשָּׁה֩ אֲשֶׁר־ בְּנָ֜הּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הֶחֱיָ֨ה אֶת־ ק֤וּמִי אַתִּי וּבֵיתֵ֔ךְ וּלְכִי֙ וְג֖וּרִי בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר תָּג֑וּרִי כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ קָרָ֤א שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃ לָֽרָעָ֔ב וְגַם־ בָּ֥א אֶל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ we·’ĕ·lî·šā‘ dib·ber ’el- hā·’iš·šāh ’ă·šer- bə·nāh lê·mōr he·ḥĕ·yāh ’eṯ- qū·mî ʾat·tī ū·ḇê·ṯêḵ ū·lə·ḵî wə·ḡū·rî ba·’ă·šer tā·ḡū·rî kî- Yah·weh qā·rā še·ḇa‘ šā·nîm lā·rā·‘āḇ wə·ḡam- bā ’el- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 1

So the woman had proceeded to do as the man of God… had instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.

הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה וַתָּ֙קָם֙ וַתַּ֕עַשׂ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ כִּדְבַ֖ר הִיא֙ וּבֵיתָ֔הּ וַתָּ֥גָר שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃ בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים hā·’iš·šāh wat·tā·qām wat·ta·‘aś ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm wat·tê·leḵ kiḏ·ḇar hî ū·ḇê·ṯāh wat·tā·ḡār še·ḇa‘ šā·nîm bə·’e·reṣ- pə·liš·tîmWLC · 2

  • At the end of seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to the king to appeal for her house and her land.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤃𐤄

וַיְהִ֗י מִקְצֵה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֔ים הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתָּ֥שָׁב מֵאֶ֣רֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַתֵּצֵא֙ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לִצְעֹ֣ק אֶל־ בֵּיתָ֖הּ וְאֶל־ שָׂדָֽהּ׃ way·hî miq·ṣêh še·ḇa‘ šā·nîm hā·’iš·šāh wat·tā·šāḇ mê·’e·reṣ pə·liš·tîm wat·tê·ṣê ’el- ham·me·leḵ liṣ·‘ōq ’el- bê·ṯāh wə·’el- śā·ḏāhWLC · 3

Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great things Elisha has done.”

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤇𐤆𐤉 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤍𐤀 𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤄

וְהַמֶּ֗לֶךְ מְדַבֵּר֙ אֶל־ גֵּ֣חֲזִ֔י נַ֥עַר אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר נָּ֣א סַפְּרָה־ לִ֔י אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הַגְּדֹל֖וֹת אֲשֶׁר־ אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ עָשָׂ֥ה wə·ham·me·leḵ mə·ḏab·bêr ’el- gê·ḥă·zî na·‘ar ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lê·mōr nā sap·pə·rāh- lî ’êṯ kāl- hag·gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ ’ă·šer- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ ‘ā·śāhWLC · 4

And Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought the dead back to life. Just then the woman whose son [Elisha] had revived came to appeal to the king for her house and her land. So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is the son Elisha restored to life.”

וַ֠יְהִי ה֥וּא מְסַפֵּ֣ר לַמֶּלֶךְ֮ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־ הַמֵּת֒ הֶחֱיָ֣ה אֶת־ וְהִנֵּ֨ה הָאִשָּׁ֜ה אֲשֶׁר־ בְּנָהּ֙ הֶחֱיָ֤ה אֶת־ צֹעֶ֣קֶת אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַל־ בֵּיתָ֖הּ וְעַל־ שָׂדָ֑הּ גֵּֽחֲזִי֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ זֹ֚את הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה וְזֶה־ בְּנָ֖הּ אֲשֶׁר־ אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ הֶחֱיָ֥ה way·hî hū mə·sap·pêr lam·me·leḵ ’êṯ ’ă·šer- ham·mêṯ he·ḥĕ·yāh ’eṯ- wə·hin·nêh hā·’iš·šāh ’ă·šer- bə·nāh he·ḥĕ·yāh ’eṯ- ṣō·‘e·qeṯ ’el- ham·me·leḵ ‘al- bê·ṯāh wə·‘al- śā·ḏāh gê·ḥă·zî way·yō·mer ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ zōṯ hā·’iš·šāh wə·zeh- bə·nāh ’ă·šer- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ he·ḥĕ·yāhWLC · 5

When the king asked the woman, she confirmed it -. So the king appointed for her an officer, saying, “Restore all that [was] hers, along with all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the country until now.”

הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל לָאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתְּסַפֶּר־ ל֑וֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ וַיִּתֶּן־ לָ֣הּ אֶחָ֜ד סָרִ֨יס לֵאמֹ֗ר הָשֵׁ֤יב אֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ לָהּ֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־ תְּבוּאֹ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה מִיּ֛וֹם עָזְבָ֥ה אֶת־ הָאָ֖רֶץ וְעַד־ עָֽתָּה׃פ ham·me·leḵ way·yiš·’al lā·’iš·šāh wat·tə·sap·per- lōw ham·me·leḵ way·yit·ten- lāh ’e·ḥāḏ sā·rîs lê·mōr hā·šêḇ ’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer- lāh wə·’êṯ kāl- tə·ḇū·’ōṯ haś·śā·ḏeh mî·yō·wm ‘ā·zə·ḇāh ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·‘aḏ- ‘āt·tāhWLC · 6

Hazael Murders Ben-hadad

Then Elisha came to Damascus vvv while Ben-hadad king of Aram was sick, and the king was told “The man of God… has come here.”

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤇𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤄

אֱלִישָׁע֙ וַיָּבֹ֤א דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק וּבֶן־ הֲדַ֥ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֖ם חֹלֶ֑ה וַיֻּגַּד־ ל֣וֹ לֵאמֹ֔ר אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עַד־ בָּ֛א הֵֽנָּה׃ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yā·ḇō dam·me·śeq ū·ḇen- hă·ḏaḏ me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ḥō·leh way·yug·gaḏ- lōw lê·mōr ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘aḏ- bā hên·nāhWLC · 7

So the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the LORD through him -, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤆𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤉

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ חֲזָהאֵ֗ל קַ֤ח מִנְחָ֔ה בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ וְלֵ֕ךְ לִקְרַ֖את אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֨ אֶת־ יְהוָ֤ה מֵֽאוֹתוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאֶחְיֶ֖ה זֶֽה׃ מֵחֳלִ֥י ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’el- ḥă·zā·h·’êl qaḥ min·ḥāh bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā wə·lêḵ liq·raṯ ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm wə·ḏā·raš·tā ’eṯ- Yah·weh mê·’ō·w·ṯōw lê·mōr ha·’eḥ·yeh zeh mê·ḥo·lîWLC · 8

So Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty camel loads… of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your son vvv Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me… to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

חֲזָאֵל֮ וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ לִקְרָאתוֹ֒ וַיִּקַּ֨ח בְיָדוֹ֙ מִנְחָ֤ה אַרְבָּעִ֣ים מַשָּׂ֖א גָּמָ֑ל וְכָל־ ט֣וּב דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק וַיָּבֹא֙ וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד לְפָנָ֔יו וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בִּנְךָ֨ בֶן־ הֲדַ֤ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָם֙ שְׁלָחַ֤נִי אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאֶחְיֶ֖ה זֶֽה׃ מֵחֳלִ֥י ḥă·zā·’êl way·yê·leḵ liq·rā·ṯōw way·yiq·qaḥ ḇə·yā·ḏōw min·ḥāh ’ar·bā·‘îm maś·śā gā·māl wə·ḵāl ṭūḇ dam·me·śeq way·yā·ḇō way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ lə·p̄ā·nāw way·yō·mer bin·ḵā ḇen- hă·ḏaḏ me·leḵ- ’ă·rām šə·lā·ḥa·nî ’ê·le·ḵā lê·mōr ha·’eḥ·yeh zeh mê·ḥo·lîWLC · 9

Elisha answered,… “Go and tell him,… ‘You will surely recover…’ But the LORD has shown me that in fact he will die…”

אֱלִישָׁ֔ע וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ לֵ֥ךְ אֱמָר־ לֹא חָיֹ֣ה תִחְיֶ֑ה יְהוָ֖ה וְהִרְאַ֥נִי כִּֽי־ מ֥וֹת יָמֽוּת׃ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw lêḵ ’ĕ·mār- lō ḥā·yōh ṯiḥ·yeh Yah·weh wə·hir·’a·nî kî- mō·wṯ yā·mūṯWLC · 10

[Elisha] fixed his gaze steadily [on him] until Hazael became uncomfortable. Then the man of God began to weep.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤁𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤊

וַיַּעֲמֵ֥ד אֶת־ פָּנָ֖יו וַיָּ֣שֶׂם עַד־ בֹּ֑שׁ אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ וַיֵּ֖בְךְּ way·ya·‘ă·mêḏ ’eṯ- pā·nāw way·yā·śem ‘aḏ- bōš ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yê·ḇəkWLC · 11

“Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael. “Because I know - the evil you will do vvv to the Israelites,” [Elisha] replied. “You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little ones to pieces, and rip open their pregnant women.”

מַדּ֖וּעַ אֲדֹנִ֣י בֹכֶ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חֲזָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי־ יָדַ֡עְתִּי אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־ רָעָ֗ה תַּעֲשֶׂה֩ לִבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל וַיֹּ֡אמֶר תְּשַׁלַּ֤ח בָּאֵשׁ֙ מִבְצְרֵיהֶ֞ם תַּהֲרֹ֔ג וּבַחֻֽרֵיהֶם֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב וְעֹלְלֵיהֶ֣ם תְּרַטֵּ֔שׁ תְּבַקֵּֽעַ׃ וְהָרֹתֵיהֶ֖ם mad·dū·a‘ ’ă·ḏō·nî ḇō·ḵeh way·yō·mer ḥă·zā·’êl kî- yā·ḏa‘·tî ’êṯ ’ă·šer- rā·‘āh ta·‘ă·śeh liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer tə·šal·laḥ bā·’êš miḇ·ṣə·rê·hem ta·hă·rōḡ ū·ḇa·ḥu·rê·hem ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·‘ō·lə·lê·hem tə·raṭ·ṭêš tə·ḇaq·qê·a‘ wə·hā·rō·ṯê·hemWLC · 12

“But how {could} your servant, a mere dog, do such a monstrous thing?” said Hazael. And Elisha answered, “The LORD has shown me that you [will be] king over Aram.”

So Hazael left Elisha and went to his master, who asked him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he replied, “He told me [that] you would surely recover…”

But the next day Hazael took a thick cloth, dipped it in water, and spread it over the king’s face. So Ben-hadad died, and Hazael reigned in his place.

Jehoram Reigns in Judah

In the fifth year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab over Israel, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat succeeded his father… as king of Judah.

[Jehoram] was thirty-two… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years.

And [Jehoram] walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done. For he married a daughter of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD.

Yet for the sake of His servant David, the LORD was unwilling… to destroy Judah, since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David [and] his descendants forever…

Edom and Libnah Rebel

In the days [of Jehoram], Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king.

So Jehoram crossed over to Zair with… all his chariots. When the Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by night. His troops, however, fled to their homes.

So to this day Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise, Libnah rebelled at the same time.

As for the rest of the acts of Jehoram, along with all his accomplishments…, are they not written in the book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Judah?

And Jehoram rested with his fathers and was buried with [them] in the City of David. And his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.

Ahaziah Reigns in Judah

In the twelfth… year of the reign of Joram son of Ahab over Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king… of Judah.

Then Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to fight against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead…, and the Arameans wounded Joram.

So King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to visit Joram son of Ahab, because [Joram] had been wounded.
