Chapter 6

The Axe Head Floats

1

Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “Please take note that the place where we meet with you is too small for us.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤍𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅

בְנֵֽי־ הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־ אֱלִישָׁ֑ע נָ֣א הִנֵּֽה־ הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲנַ֜חְנוּ יֹשְׁבִ֥ים שָׁ֛ם לְפָנֶ֖יךָ צַ֥ר מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ ḇə·nê- han·nə·ḇî·’îm way·yō·mə·rū ’el- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ nā hin·nêh- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer ’ă·naḥ·nū yō·šə·ḇîm šām lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā ṣar mim·men·nūWLC · 1

Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live… there.” “Go,” said [Elisha].

𐤍𐤀 𐤍𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤒𐤇𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

נָּ֣א נֵֽלֲכָה־ עַד־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן מִשָּׁם֙ אִ֚ישׁ וְנִקְחָ֤ה אֶחָ֔ת קוֹרָ֣ה וְנַעֲשֶׂה־ לָּ֥נוּ מָק֖וֹם לָשֶׁ֣בֶת שָׁ֑ם שָׁ֛ם לֵֽכוּ׃ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר nā nē·lă·ḵå̄h- ‘aḏ- hay·yar·dên miš·šām ’îš wə·niq·ḥāh ’e·ḥāṯ qō·w·rāh wə·na·‘ă·śeh- lā·nū mā·qō·wm lā·še·ḇeṯ šām šām lê·ḵū way·yō·merWLC · 2

Then one of them said, “Please… come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.

הָֽאֶחָ֔ד וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ נָ֖א ה֥וֹאֶל וְלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־ עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ אֲנִ֥י אֵלֵֽךְ׃ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר hā·’e·ḥāḏ way·yō·mer nā hō·w·’el wə·lêḵ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ’ă·nî ’ê·lêḵ way·yō·merWLC · 3

So [Elisha] went with them, and when they came to the Jordan, they began to cut down some trees.

𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָה וַֽיִּגְזְר֖וּ הָעֵצִֽים׃ way·yê·leḵ ’it·tām way·yā·ḇō·’ū hay·yar·dê·nāh way·yiḡ·zə·rū hā·‘ê·ṣîmWLC · 4

  • As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron [axe head] fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he cried out…, “it was borrowed!”

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤄𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋

וַיְהִ֤י הָֽאֶחָד֙ מַפִּ֣יל הַקּוֹרָ֔ה וְאֶת־ הַבַּרְזֶ֖ל נָפַ֣ל אֶל־ הַמָּ֑יִם אֲהָ֥הּ אֲדֹנִ֖י וַיִּצְעַ֥ק וַיֹּ֛אמֶר וְה֥וּא שָׁאֽוּל׃ way·hî hā·’e·ḥāḏ map·pîl haq·qō·w·rāh wə·’eṯ- hab·bar·zel nā·p̄al ’el- ham·mā·yim ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nî way·yiṣ·‘aq way·yō·mer wə·hū šā·’ūlWLC · 5

“Where did it fall?” asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron float.

אָ֣נָה נָפָ֑ל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיַּרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶת־ הַמָּק֔וֹם וַיִּקְצָב־ עֵץ֙ וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־ שָׁ֔מָּה הַבַּרְזֶֽל׃ וַיָּ֖צֶף ’ā·nāh nā·p̄āl way·yō·mer ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yar·’ê·hū ’eṯ- ham·mā·qō·wm way·yiq·ṣāḇ- ‘êṣ way·yaš·leḵ- šām·māh hab·bar·zel way·yā·ṣep̄WLC · 6

“Lift [it] out…,” he said, and [the man] reached out his hand and took it.

הָ֣רֶם לָ֑ךְ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח יָד֖וֹ וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ׃פ hā·rem lāḵ way·yō·mer way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw way·yiq·qā·ḥê·hūWLC · 7

Elisha Captures the Blinded Arameans

Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel. After consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp [will be] in such and such a place.”

𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌

וּמֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם הָיָ֥ה נִלְחָ֖ם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּוָּעַץ֙ אֶל־ עֲבָדָ֣יו לֵאמֹ֗ר תַּחֲנֹתִֽי׃ אֶל־ פְּלֹנִ֥י אַלְמֹנִ֖י מְק֛וֹם ū·me·leḵ ’ă·rām hā·yāh nil·ḥām bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yiw·wā·‘aṣ ’el- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw lê·mōr ta·ḥă·nō·ṯî ’el- pə·lō·nî ’al·mō·nî mə·qō·wmWLC · 8

Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel:… “Be careful not to pass by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌

אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח אֶל־ מֶ֤לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִשָּׁ֕מֶר מֵעֲבֹ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה הַמָּק֣וֹם כִּֽי־ אֲרָ֥ם נְחִתִּֽים׃ שָׁ֖ם ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiš·laḥ ’el- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr hiš·šā·mer mê·‘ă·ḇōr haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm kî- ’ă·rām nə·ḥit·tîm šāmWLC · 9

So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out… vvv Time and again… [Elisha] warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.

𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌

מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח אֶֽל־ הַמָּק֞וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים אָֽמַר־ ל֧וֹ לֹ֥א אַחַ֖ת וְלֹ֥א שְׁתָּֽיִם׃ וְהִזְהִירָהּ וְנִשְׁמַ֣ר שָׁ֑ם me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·laḥ ’el- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ā·mar- lōw lō ’a·ḥaṯ wə·lō šə·tā·yim wə·hiz·hī·rå̄h wə·niš·mar šāmWLC · 10

For this reason the king of Aram became enraged… and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me which one of us [is] on the side of the king of Israel?”

𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤏𐤓 𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤕𐤂𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

עַל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הַדָּבָ֖ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֔ם וַיִּסָּעֵר֙ לֵ֣ב וַיִּקְרָ֤א עֲבָדָיו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם הֲלוֹא֙ תַּגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֔י מִ֥י מִשֶּׁלָּ֖נוּ אֶל־ מֶ֥לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ‘al- haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār me·leḵ- ’ă·rām way·yis·sā·‘êr lêḇ way·yiq·rā ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yō·mer ’el- ’ă·lê·hem hă·lō·w tag·gî·ḏū lî mî miš·šel·lā·nū ’el- me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 11

But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom…”

𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤊

אַחַ֣ד מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ ל֖וֹא אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ כִּֽי־ אֱלִישָׁ֤ע הַנָּבִיא֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יַגִּיד֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־ הַ֨דְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּ֖ר בַּחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבֶֽךָ׃ ’a·ḥaḏ mê·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yō·mer lō·w ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ kî- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer bə·yiś·rā·’êl yag·gîḏ lə·me·leḵ yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer tə·ḏab·bêr ba·ḥă·ḏar miš·kā·ḇe·ḵāWLC · 12

So the king said, “Go and see where he [is], that I may send men to capture him.” On receiving the report -, “Elisha is in Dothan,”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤍

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכ֤וּ וּרְאוּ֙ אֵיכֹ֣ה ה֔וּא וְאֶשְׁלַ֖ח וְאֶקָּחֵ֑הוּ וַיֻּגַּד־ ל֥וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר הִנֵּ֥ה בְדֹתָֽן׃ way·yō·mer lə·ḵū ū·rə·’ū ’ê·ḵōh hū wə·’eš·laḥ wə·’eq·qā·ḥê·hū way·yug·gaḏ- lōw lê·mōr hin·nêh ḇə·ḏō·ṯānWLC · 13

[the king of Aram] sent horses, chariots, and a great army -. They went there by night and surrounded… the city.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓

וַיִּשְׁלַח־ סוּסִ֥ים וְרֶ֖כֶב כָּבֵ֑ד וְחַ֣יִל שָׁ֛מָּה וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ לַ֔יְלָה וַיַּקִּ֖פוּ עַל־ הָעִֽיר׃ way·yiš·laḥ- sū·sîm wə·re·ḵeḇ kā·ḇêḏ wə·ḥa·yil šām·māh way·yā·ḇō·’ū lay·lāh way·yaq·qi·p̄ū ‘al- hā·‘îrWLC · 14

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he… asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”

𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤎𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤎𐤅𐤁𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤄𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄

מְשָׁרֵ֨ת אִ֥ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֮ לָקוּם֒ וַיֵּצֵ֕א וַ֠יַּשְׁכֵּם וְהִנֵּה־ חַ֛יִל וְס֣וּס וָרָ֑כֶב סוֹבֵ֥ב אֶת־ הָעִ֖יר נַעֲר֥וֹ אֵלָ֛יו וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲהָ֥הּ אֲדֹנִ֖י אֵיכָ֥ה נַֽעֲשֶֽׂה׃ mə·šā·rêṯ ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lā·qūm way·yê·ṣê way·yaš·kêm wə·hin·nêh- ḥa·yil wə·sūs wā·rā·ḵeḇ sō·w·ḇêḇ ’eṯ- hā·‘îr na·‘ă·rōw ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nî ’ê·ḵāh na·‘ă·śehWLC · 15

“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who [are] with us [are] more than those who [are] with them.”

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌

אַל־ תִּירָ֑א וַיֹּ֖אמֶר כִּ֤י אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֔נוּ רַבִּים֙ מֵאֲשֶׁ֖ר אוֹתָֽם׃ ’al- tî·rā way·yō·mer kî ’ă·šer ’it·tā·nū rab·bîm mê·’ă·šer ’ō·w·ṯāmWLC · 16

Then Elisha… prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that… the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤒𐤇 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤇 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤀𐤔 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏

אֱלִישָׁע֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל יְהוָ֕ה נָ֥א אֶת־ פְּקַח־ עֵינָ֖יו וְיִרְאֶ֑ה יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ וַיִּפְקַ֤ח עֵינֵ֣י הַנַּ֔עַר וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֨ה הָהָ֜ר מָלֵ֨א סוּסִ֥ים וְרֶ֛כֶב אֵ֖שׁ סְבִיבֹ֥ת אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yō·mar way·yiṯ·pal·lêl Yah·weh nā ’eṯ- pə·qaḥ- ‘ê·nāw wə·yir·’eh Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yip̄·qaḥ ‘ê·nê han·na·‘ar way·yar wə·hin·nêh hā·hār mā·lê sū·sîm wə·re·ḵeḇ ’êš sə·ḇî·ḇōṯ ’ĕ·lî·šā‘WLC · 17

As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD…, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

And Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.

  • When they had entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these [men] that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.

And when the king of Israel saw them, he asked… Elisha, “My father, shall I kill [them]? Shall I kill [them]?”

“Do not kill them,” he replied. “{Would} you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”

So [the king] prepared a great feast… for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again…

The Siege and Famine of Samaria

  • Some time later…, vvv Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to besiege… Samaria.

וַֽיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן בֶּן־ הֲדַ֥ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ אֲרָ֖ם אֶת־ וַיִּקְבֹּ֛ץ כָּל־ מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיַּ֕עַל וַיָּ֖צַר עַל־ שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê- ḵên ben- hă·ḏaḏ me·leḵ- ’ă·rām ’eṯ- way·yiq·bōṣ kāl- ma·ḥă·nê·hū way·ya·‘al way·yā·ṣar ‘al- šō·mə·rō·wnWLC · 24

So there was a great famine in Samaria. Indeed, they besieged [the city] so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty [shekels] of silver, and a quarter cab of dove’s dung sold for five [shekels] of silver.

  • As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him,… “Help me, my lord the king!”

He answered, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or… the winepress?”

Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him…, and tomorrow we will eat my son.’

So we boiled my son and ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’ But she had hidden her son.”

  • When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw vvv the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.

וַיְהִי֩ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ דִּבְרֵ֤י הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַיִּקְרַ֣ע אֶת־ בְּגָדָ֔יו וְה֖וּא עֹבֵ֣ר עַל־ הַחֹמָ֑ה הָעָ֔ם וַיַּ֣רְא וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַשַּׂ֛ק מִבָּֽיִת׃ עַל־ בְּשָׂר֖וֹ way·hî ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- ḵiš·mō·a‘ diḇ·rê hā·’iš·šāh way·yiq·ra‘ ’eṯ- bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·hū ‘ō·ḇêr ‘al- ha·ḥō·māh hā·‘ām way·yar wə·hin·nêh haś·śaq mib·bā·yiṯ ‘al- bə·śā·rōwWLC · 30

He announced, “May God punish… me, and ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders through this day!”

Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before [he] arrived…, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer… has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. - Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”

While Elisha was still speaking with them,… the messenger came down to him. And [the king] said,… “This calamity [is] from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
