Chapter 25
Nebuchadnezzar Besieges Jerusalem

So in the ninth year of Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth… day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon… marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They encamped outside [the city] and built a siege wall… all around it.
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁
וַיְהִי֩ הַתְּשִׁיעִ֜ית בִשְׁנַ֨ת לְמָלְכ֗וֹ בֶּעָשׂ֣וֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ֒ הָעֲשִׂירִי֮ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֨ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֜ל ה֧וּא בָּ֠א עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וְכָל־ חֵיל֛וֹ וַיִּ֣חַן עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּבְנ֥וּ דָּיֵ֥ק עָלֶ֖יהָ סָבִֽיב׃ way·hî hat·tə·šî·‘îṯ ḇiš·naṯ lə·mā·lə·ḵōw be·‘ā·śō·wr la·ḥō·ḏeš hā·‘ă·śî·rî ba·ḥō·ḏeš nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel hū bā ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·ḵāl ḥê·lōw way·yi·ḥan ‘ā·le·hā way·yiḇ·nū dā·yêq ‘ā·le·hā sā·ḇîḇ — WLC · 1

And the city was kept under siege until King Zedekiah’s eleventh… year.

הָעִ֖יר וַתָּבֹ֥א בַּמָּצ֑וֹר עַ֚ד לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ עַשְׁתֵּ֣י עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה hā·‘îr wat·tā·ḇō bam·mā·ṣō·wr ‘aḏ lam·me·leḵ ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū ‘aš·tê ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh — WLC · 2

By the ninth [day] of the [fourth] month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food.

בְּתִשְׁעָ֣ה לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ הָרָעָ֖ב בָּעִ֑יר וַיֶּחֱזַ֥ק לְעַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃ הָ֥יָה וְלֹא־ לֶ֖חֶם bə·ṯiš·‘āh la·ḥō·ḏeš hā·rā·‘āḇ bā·‘îr way·ye·ḥĕ·zaq lə·‘am hā·’ā·reṣ hā·yāh wə·lō- le·ḥem — WLC · 3

Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans… had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,

הָעִ֗יר וַתִּבָּקַ֣ע וְכַשְׂדִּ֥ים עַל־ סָבִ֑יב הָעִ֖יר וְכָל־ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַמִּלְחָמָ֤ה׀ הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ דֶּ֜רֶךְ שַׁ֣עַר׀ בֵּ֣ין הַחֹמֹתַ֗יִם אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ גַּ֣ן וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הָעֲרָבָֽה׃ hā·‘îr wat·tib·bā·qa‘ wə·ḵaś·dîm ‘al- sā·ḇîḇ hā·‘îr wə·ḵāl ’an·šê ham·mil·ḥā·māh hal·lay·lāh de·reḵ ša·‘ar bên ha·ḥō·mō·ṯa·yim ’ă·šer ‘al- ham·me·leḵ gan way·yê·leḵ de·reḵ hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh — WLC · 4

but the army of the Chaldeans pursued [the king] and overtook him in the plains of Jericho, and his whole army deserted him.

חֵיל־ כַּשְׂדִּים֙ וַיִּרְדְּפ֤וּ אַחַ֣ר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּשִּׂ֥גוּ אֹת֖וֹ בְּעַרְב֣וֹת יְרֵח֑וֹ וְכָל־ חֵיל֔וֹ נָפֹ֖צוּ מֵעָלָֽיו׃ ḥêl- kaś·dîm way·yir·də·p̄ū ’a·ḥar ham·me·leḵ way·yaś·śi·ḡū ’ō·ṯōw bə·‘ar·ḇō·wṯ yə·rê·ḥōw wə·ḵāl ḥê·lōw nā·p̄ō·ṣū mê·‘ā·lāw — WLC · 5

The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, where they pronounced judgment on him.
𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤀𐤕𐤅
וַֽיִּתְפְּשׂוּ֙ אֶת־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּעֲל֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ אֶל־ מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל רִבְלָ֑תָה וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ אִתּ֖וֹ way·yiṯ·pə·śū ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ way·ya·‘ă·lū ’ō·ṯōw ’el- me·leḵ bā·ḇel riḇ·lā·ṯāh way·ḏab·bə·rū miš·pāṭ ’it·tōw — WLC · 6

And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. Then they put out [his] eyes, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.

The Temple Destroyed

On the seventh… day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth… year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign over Babylon, Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem.
𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤀𐤃𐤍 𐤓𐤁 𐤈𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌
בְּשִׁבְעָ֣ה לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ הַֽחֲמִישִׁי֙ וּבַחֹ֤דֶשׁ הִ֗יא תְּשַֽׁע־ עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה שְׁנַת֙ נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֣ר לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֑ל נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֧ן רַב־ טַבָּחִ֛ים עֶ֥בֶד מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל בָּ֞א יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ bə·šiḇ·‘āh la·ḥō·ḏeš ha·ḥă·mî·šî ū·ḇa·ḥō·ḏeš hî tə·ša‘- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh šə·naṯ nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar lam·me·leḵ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel nə·ḇū·zar·’ă·ḏān raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm ‘e·ḇeḏ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel bā yə·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 8

He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem— - every significant building.

וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף אֶת־ בֵּית־ יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְאֵ֨ת בֵּ֣ית כָּל־ בָּתֵּ֧י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֛ם וְאֶת־ שָׂרַ֥ף בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ כָּל־ גָּד֖וֹל בֵּ֥ית way·yiś·rōp̄ ’eṯ- bêṯ- Yah·weh wə·’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ wə·’êṯ bêṯ kāl- bāt·tê yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’eṯ- śā·rap̄ bā·’êš kāl- gā·ḏō·wl bêṯ — WLC · 9

- And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.

וְאֶת־ כָּל־ חֵ֣יל כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר רַב־ טַבָּחִֽים׃ נָֽתְצוּ֙ חוֹמֹ֥ת סָבִ֑יב יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם wə·’eṯ- kāl- ḥêl kaś·dîm ’ă·šer raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm nā·ṯə·ṣū ḥō·w·mōṯ sā·ḇîḇ yə·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 10

- Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile vvv the people who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the population.

וְאֵת֩ נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֖ן רַב־ טַבָּחִֽים׃ הֶגְלָ֕ה יֶ֨תֶר הָעָ֜ם הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֣ים בָּעִ֗יר וְאֶת־ הַנֹּֽפְלִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָפְלוּ֙ עַל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל וְאֵ֖ת יֶ֣תֶר הֶהָמ֑וֹן wə·’êṯ nə·ḇū·zar·’ă·ḏān raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm heḡ·lāh ye·ṯer hā·‘ām han·niš·’ā·rîm bā·‘îr wə·’eṯ- han·nō·p̄ə·lîm ’ă·šer nā·p̄ə·lū ‘al- ham·me·leḵ bā·ḇel wə·’êṯ ye·ṯer he·hā·mō·wn — WLC · 11

But the captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest of the land to tend the vineyards and fields.
𐤓𐤁 𐤈𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤋𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤌
רַב־ טַבָּחִ֑ים הִשְׁאִ֖יר וּמִדַּלַּ֣ת הָאָ֔רֶץ לְכֹֽרְמִ֖ים וּלְיֹגְבִֽים׃ raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm hiš·’îr ū·mid·dal·laṯ hā·’ā·reṣ lə·ḵō·rə·mîm ū·lə·yō·ḡə·ḇîm — WLC · 12

Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars and stands and the bronze Sea - in the house of the LORD, and they carried the bronze to Babylon.

וְאֶת־ כַשְׂדִּ֑ים שִׁבְּר֣וּ הַנְּחֹ֜שֶׁת עַמּוּדֵ֨י וְֽאֶת־ הַמְּכֹנ֞וֹת וְאֶת־ הַנְּחֹ֛שֶׁת אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָ֧ם בְּבֵית־ יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֵּית־ יְהוָ֗ה וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ אֶת־ נְחֻשְׁתָּ֖ם בָּבֶֽלָה׃ wə·’eṯ- ḵaś·dîm šib·bə·rū han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ ‘am·mū·ḏê wə·’eṯ- ham·mə·ḵō·nō·wṯ wə·’eṯ- han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ ’ă·šer yām bə·ḇêṯ- Yah·weh ’ă·šer bêṯ- Yah·weh way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- nə·ḥuš·tām bā·ḇe·lāh — WLC · 13

They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, dishes, and all the articles of bronze used in the temple service

וְאֶת־ לָקָֽחוּ׃ הַסִּירֹ֨ת וְאֶת־ הַיָּעִ֜ים וְאֶת־ הַֽמְזַמְּר֣וֹת וְאֶת־ הַכַּפּ֗וֹת וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־ כְּלֵ֧י הַנְּחֹ֛שֶׁת אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְשָֽׁרְתוּ־ בָ֖ם wə·’eṯ- lā·qā·ḥū has·sî·rōṯ wə·’eṯ- hay·yā·‘îm wə·’eṯ- ham·zam·mə·rō·wṯ wə·’eṯ- hak·kap·pō·wṯ wə·’êṯ kāl- kə·lê han·nə·ḥō·šeṯ ’ă·šer yə·šā·rə·ṯū- ḇām — WLC · 14

- The captain of the guard also took away the censers and sprinkling bowls— anything [made of] pure gold… or fine silver…

וְאֶת־ רַב־ טַבָּחִֽים׃ לָקַ֖ח הַמַּחְתּוֹת֙ וְאֶת־ הַמִּזְרָק֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר זָהָב֙ זָהָ֔ב וַאֲשֶׁר־ כֶּ֖סֶף כָּ֑סֶף wə·’eṯ- raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm lā·qaḥ ham·maḥ·tō·wṯ wə·’eṯ- ham·miz·rā·qō·wṯ ’ă·šer zā·hāḇ zā·hāḇ wa·’ă·šer- ke·sep̄ kā·sep̄ — WLC · 15

As for the two pillars, the Sea, and the movable stands that Solomon had made for the house of the LORD,… {the weight} of the bronze from all these articles [was beyond] measure.

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over the people - he had left behind in the land of Judah.

When all the commanders of the armies and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah {as governor}, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah— Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, as well as their men.

The Murder of Gedaliah

In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, [who was a member] of the royal family, came with ten men and struck down and killed Gedaliah, vvv along with the Judeans and Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.

And he spoke kindly to Jehoiachin and set his throne above the thrones of the [other] kings who [were] with him in Babylon.

So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes, and he dined… regularly at the king’s table for the rest… of his life.
