Chapter 24
Babylon Controls Jehoiakim
1
During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded. So Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years, until he turned and rebelled against [Nebuchadnezzar].
𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤅
בְּיָמָ֣יו נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל עָלָ֔ה יְהוֹיָקִ֥ים וַיְהִי־ ל֨וֹ עֶ֙בֶד֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וַיָּ֖שָׁב וַיִּמְרָד־ בּֽוֹ׃ bə·yā·māw nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ bā·ḇel ‘ā·lāh yə·hō·w·yā·qîm way·hî- lōw ‘e·ḇeḏ šā·lōš šā·nîm way·yā·šāḇ way·yim·rāḏ- bōw — WLC · 1

And the LORD sent Chaldean, - Aramean, - Moabite, - and Ammonite… raiders against [Jehoiakim] [in order] to destroy Judah, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servants the prophets.

Surely this happened to Judah at the LORD’s command, to remove them from His presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all that he had done,
𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄
אַ֣ךְ׀ הָֽיְתָה֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה עַל־ יְהוָ֗ה פִּ֣י לְהָסִ֖יר מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑יו בְּחַטֹּ֣את מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה כְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃ ’aḵ hā·yə·ṯāh bî·hū·ḏāh ‘al- Yah·weh pî lə·hā·sîr mê·‘al pā·nāw bə·ḥaṭ·ṭōṯ mə·naš·šeh kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh — WLC · 3

and also for the innocent blood he had shed. For he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was unwilling to forgive.

וְגַ֤ם הַנָּקִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דַּֽם־ שָׁפָ֔ךְ וַיְמַלֵּ֥א אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם נָקִ֑י דָּ֣ם יְהוָ֖ה אָבָ֥ה וְלֹֽא־ לִסְלֹֽחַ׃ wə·ḡam han·nā·qî ’ă·šer dam- šā·p̄āḵ way·mal·lê ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim nā·qî dām Yah·weh ’ā·ḇāh wə·lō- lis·lō·aḥ — WLC · 4

As for the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, along with all his accomplishments…, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Judah?

Jehoiachin Reigns in Judah

And Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin reigned in his place.

יְהוֹיָקִ֖ים וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֑יו בְּנ֖וֹ יְהוֹיָכִ֥ין וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ yə·hō·w·yā·qîm way·yiš·kaḇ ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw bə·nōw yə·hō·w·yā·ḵîn way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāw — WLC · 6

Now the king of Egypt did not march out of his land again…, because the king of Babylon had taken all his territory…, from the Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River.

Jehoiachin was eighteen… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem.

יְהוֹיָכִ֣ין שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה בֶּן־ שָׁנָה֙ בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה חֳדָשִׁ֔ים אִמּ֔וֹ וְשֵׁ֣ם נְחֻשְׁתָּ֥א בַת־ אֶלְנָתָ֖ן מִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ yə·hō·w·yā·ḵîn šə·mō·neh ‘eś·rêh ben- šā·nāh bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·laḵ bî·rū·šā·lim ū·šə·lō·šāh ḥo·ḏā·šîm ’im·mōw wə·šêm nə·ḥuš·tā ḇaṯ- ’el·nā·ṯān mî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 8

And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his father had done.

The Captivity of Jerusalem

At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched up to Jerusalem, and the city came under siege.
𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤓
הַהִ֔יא בָּעֵ֣ת עַבְדֵ֛י נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל עָלָה יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם הָעִ֖יר וַתָּבֹ֥א בַּמָּצֽוֹר׃ ha·hî bā·‘êṯ ‘aḇ·ḏê nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ʿå̄·lå̄h yə·rū·šā·lim hā·‘îr wat·tā·ḇō bam·mā·ṣō·wr — WLC · 10

And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to the city while his servants were besieging it…

נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל וַיָּבֹ֛א עַל־ הָעִ֑יר וַעֲבָדָ֖יו צָרִ֥ים עָלֶֽיהָ׃ nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel way·yā·ḇō ‘al- hā·‘îr wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw ṣā·rîm ‘ā·le·hā — WLC · 11

Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his officials [all] surrendered to the king of Babylon… So in the eighth year of his reign, the king of Babylon took him captive -.

As the LORD had declared, [Nebuchadnezzar] also carried off… all the treasures from the house of the LORD [and] the royal palace, and he cut into pieces all the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD.

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר יְהוָֽה׃ דִּבֶּ֥ר וַיּוֹצֵ֣א מִשָּׁ֗ם אֶת־ כָּל־ אוֹצְרוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְאֽוֹצְר֖וֹת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בֵּ֣ית וַיְקַצֵּ֞ץ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַזָּהָ֗ב כְּלֵ֣י אֲשֶׁ֨ר שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ עָשָׂ֜ה בְּהֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber way·yō·w·ṣê miš·šām ’eṯ- kāl- ’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ bêṯ Yah·weh wə·’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ ham·me·leḵ bêṯ way·qaṣ·ṣêṣ ’eṯ- kāl- haz·zā·hāḇ kə·lê ’ă·šer šə·lō·mōh me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl ‘ā·śāh bə·hê·ḵal Yah·weh — WLC · 13

He carried into exile all Jerusalem— all the commanders and mighty men of valor, all the craftsmen and metalsmiths— ten thousand captives [in all]. Only the poorest people of the land remained.

וְהִגְלָ֣ה אֶת־ כָּל־ יְ֠רוּשָׁלִַם וְֽאֶת־ כָּל־ הַשָּׂרִ֞ים וְאֵ֣ת׀ כָּל־ גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֗יִל וְכָל־ הֶחָרָ֖שׁ וְהַמַּסְגֵּ֑ר עֲשָׂרָה אֲלָפִים֙ גּוֹלֶ֔ה זוּלַ֖ת לֹ֣א דַּלַּ֥ת עַם־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ נִשְׁאַ֔ר wə·hiḡ·lāh ’eṯ- kāl- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’eṯ- kāl- haś·śā·rîm wə·’êṯ kāl- gib·bō·w·rê ha·ḥa·yil wə·ḵāl he·ḥā·rāš wə·ham·mas·gêr ʿă·śå̄·rå̄h ’ă·lā·p̄îm gō·w·leh zū·laṯ lō dal·laṯ ‘am- hā·’ā·reṣ niš·’ar — WLC · 14

Nebuchadnezzar carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, as well as the king’s mother, [his] wives, his officials, and the leading men… of the land. He took them into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

וַיֶּ֥גֶל אֶת־ יְהוֹיָכִ֖ין בָּבֶ֑לָה וְאֶת־ הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ וְאֶת־ אֵ֣ם הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וְאֶת־ נְשֵׁ֨י סָרִיסָ֗יו וְאֵת֙ אֱוִלֵי הָאָ֔רֶץ הוֹלִ֛יךְ גּוֹלָ֥ה מִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בָּבֶֽלָה׃ way·ye·ḡel ’eṯ- yə·hō·w·yā·ḵîn bā·ḇe·lāh wə·’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ wə·’eṯ- ’êm ham·me·leḵ wə·’eṯ- nə·šê sā·rî·sāw wə·’êṯ ʾɛ̆·wi·lē hā·’ā·reṣ hō·w·lîḵ gō·w·lāh mî·rū·šā·lim bā·ḇe·lāh — WLC · 15

- The king of Babylon also brought into exile to Babylon all seven thousand men of valor and a thousand craftsmen and metalsmiths— all strong and fit for battle.

Then the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, [Jehoiachin’s] uncle, king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah

Zedekiah was twenty-one… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven… years. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.

And [Zedekiah] did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as Jehoiakim had done.

For because of the anger of the LORD, [all this] happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He finally banished them from His presence. And Zedekiah also rebelled against the king of Babylon.
