Chapter 22
Josiah Reigns in Judah
1
Josiah was eight years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one… years. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath.

And he did [what was] right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.

Funding the Temple Repairs

Now in the eighteenth… year of his reign, King Josiah sent the scribe, Shaphan son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the house of the LORD, saying,

וַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁמֹנֶ֤ה עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ יֹאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ אֶת־ שָׁלַ֣ח הַסֹּפֵ֔ר שָׁפָ֨ן בֶּן־ אֲצַלְיָ֤הוּ בֶן־ מְשֻׁלָּם֙ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ way·hî biš·mō·neh ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh lam·me·leḵ ham·me·leḵ yō·šî·yā·hū ’eṯ- šā·laḥ has·sō·p̄êr šā·p̄ān ben- ’ă·ṣal·yā·hū ḇen- mə·šul·lām bêṯ Yah·weh lê·mōr — WLC · 3

“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him count the money that has been brought into the house of the LORD, which vvv the doorkeepers… have collected from the people.

עֲלֵ֗ה אֶל־ חִלְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ הַגָּד֔וֹל הַכֹּהֵ֣ן וְיַתֵּ֣ם אֶת־ הַכֶּ֔סֶף הַמּוּבָ֖א בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שֹׁמְרֵ֥י הַסַּ֖ף מֵאֵ֥ת אָסְפ֛וּ הָעָֽם׃ ‘ă·lêh ’el- ḥil·qî·yā·hū hag·gā·ḏō·wl hak·kō·hên wə·yat·têm ’eṯ- hak·ke·sep̄ ham·mū·ḇā bêṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer šō·mə·rê has·sap̄ mê·’êṯ ’ā·sə·p̄ū hā·‘ām — WLC · 4

And let them deliver it into the hands of the supervisors of those doing the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn are to give it to the workmen… repairing the damages… to the house of the LORD—

וְיִתְּנֹה עַל־ יַד֙ הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים עֹשֵׂ֣י הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה בְּבֵית יְהוָ֑ה וְיִתְּנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ לְעֹשֵׂ֤י הַמְּלָאכָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ לְחַזֵּ֖ק בֶּ֥דֶק הַבָּֽיִת׃ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה wə·yit·tə·nōh ‘al- yaḏ ham·mup̄·qā·ḏîm ‘ō·śê ham·mə·lā·ḵāh bə·ḇēṯ Yah·weh wə·yit·tə·nū ’ō·ṯōw lə·‘ō·śê ham·mə·lā·ḵāh ’ă·šer lə·ḥaz·zêq be·ḏeq hab·bā·yiṯ bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 5

to the carpenters, builders, and masons— to buy timber and dressed stone to repair the temple.
𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤂𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤑𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕
לֶחָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וְלַבֹּנִ֖ים וְלַגֹּֽדְרִ֑ים וְלִקְנ֤וֹת עֵצִים֙ מַחְצֵ֔ב וְאַבְנֵ֣י לְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־ הַבָּֽיִת׃ le·ḥā·rā·šîm wə·lab·bō·nîm wə·lag·gō·ḏə·rîm wə·liq·nō·wṯ ‘ê·ṣîm maḥ·ṣêḇ wə·’aḇ·nê lə·ḥaz·zêq ’eṯ- hab·bā·yiṯ — WLC · 6

But they need not account vvv for the money put into their hands, since they work with integrity.”

אַ֚ךְ לֹא־ יֵחָשֵׁ֣ב אִתָּ֔ם הַכֶּ֖סֶף הַנִּתָּ֣ן עַל־ יָדָ֑ם כִּ֥י הֵ֥ם עֹשִֽׂים׃ בֶאֱמוּנָ֖ה ’aḵ lō- yê·ḥā·šêḇ ’it·tām hak·ke·sep̄ han·nit·tān ‘al- yā·ḏām kî hêm ‘ō·śîm ḇe·’ĕ·mū·nāh — WLC · 7
Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law

Then Hilkiah the high… priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD!” And he gave [it] to Shaphan, who read it.

חִלְקִיָּ֜הוּ הַגָּדוֹל֙ עַל־ הַכֹּהֵ֤ן וַ֠יֹּאמֶר שָׁפָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֔ר מָצָ֖אתִי סֵ֧פֶר הַתּוֹרָ֛ה בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה חִלְקִיָּ֧ה אֶת־ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן הַסֵּ֛פֶר אֶל־ שָׁפָ֖ן וַיִּקְרָאֵֽהוּ׃ ḥil·qî·yā·hū hag·gā·ḏō·wl ‘al- hak·kō·hên way·yō·mer šā·p̄ān has·sō·p̄êr mā·ṣā·ṯî sê·p̄er hat·tō·w·rāh bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh ḥil·qî·yāh ’eṯ- way·yit·tên has·sê·p̄er ’el- šā·p̄ān way·yiq·rā·’ê·hū — WLC · 8

And Shaphan the scribe went to the king and reported -…, “Your servants have paid out the money that was found in the temple and have put it into the hands of the workers… and supervisors of the house of the LORD.”

שָׁפָ֤ן הַסֹּפֵר֙ וַיָּבֹ֞א אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֥שֶׁב אֶת־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָ֑ר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־ הִתִּ֤יכוּ הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ הַנִּמְצָ֣א בַבַּ֔יִת וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֗הוּ עַל־ יַד֙ עֹשֵׂ֣י הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ šā·p̄ān has·sō·p̄êr way·yā·ḇō ’el- ham·me·leḵ way·yā·šeḇ ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ dā·ḇār way·yō·mer ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ’eṯ- hit·tî·ḵū hak·ke·sep̄ han·nim·ṣā ḇab·ba·yiṯ way·yit·tə·nu·hū ‘al- yaḏ ‘ō·śê ham·mə·lā·ḵāh ham·mup̄·qā·ḏîm bêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 9

Moreover, Shaphan the scribe told the king,… “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.

שָׁפָ֤ן הַסֹּפֵר֙ וַיַּגֵּ֞ד לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֔ר חִלְקִיָּ֖ה הַכֹּהֵ֑ן נָ֣תַן לִ֔י סֵ֚פֶר שָׁפָ֖ן וַיִּקְרָאֵ֥הוּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ šā·p̄ān has·sō·p̄êr way·yag·gêḏ lam·me·leḵ lê·mōr ḥil·qî·yāh hak·kō·hên nā·ṯan lî sê·p̄er šā·p̄ān way·yiq·rā·’ê·hū lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 10

- When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes

וַֽיְהִי֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶת־ כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ דִּבְרֵ֖י סֵ֣פֶר הַתּוֹרָ֑ה וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־ בְּגָדָֽיו׃ way·hî ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- kiš·mō·a‘ diḇ·rê sê·p̄er hat·tō·w·rāh way·yiq·ra‘ ’eṯ- bə·ḡā·ḏāw — WLC · 11

[and] commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king -:
𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤐𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤍 𐤄𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ אֶת־ וַיְצַ֣ו חִלְקִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֡ן וְאֶת־ אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן־ שָׁ֠פָן וְאֶת־ עַכְבּ֨וֹר בֶּן־ מִיכָיָ֜ה וְאֵ֣ת׀ שָׁפָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֗ר וְאֵ֛ת עֲשָׂיָ֥ה עֶֽבֶד־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֵאמֹֽר׃ ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- way·ṣaw ḥil·qî·yāh hak·kō·hên wə·’eṯ- ’ă·ḥî·qām be·nō·šā- šā·p̲ān wə·’eṯ- ‘aḵ·bō·wr ben- mî·ḵā·yāh wə·’êṯ šā·p̄ān has·sō·p̄êr wə·’êṯ ‘ă·śā·yāh ‘e·ḇeḏ- ham·me·leḵ lê·mōr — WLC · 12

“Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all Judah concerning the words in this book that has been found. For great [is] the wrath of the LORD that… burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book by doing all that is written about us.”

לְכוּ֩ דִרְשׁ֨וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֜ה בַּעֲדִ֣י וּבְעַד־ הָעָ֗ם וּבְעַד֙ כָּל־ יְהוּדָ֔ה עַל־ דִּבְרֵ֛י הַזֶּ֑ה הַסֵּ֥פֶר הַנִּמְצָ֖א כִּֽי־ גְדוֹלָ֞ה חֲמַ֣ת יְהוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־ הִיא֙ נִצְּתָ֣ה בָ֔נוּ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֹֽא־ שָׁמְע֜וּ עַל־ דִּבְרֵי֙ הַזֶּ֔ה הַסֵּ֣פֶר לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת כְּכָל־ הַכָּת֥וּב עָלֵֽינוּ׃ lə·ḵū ḏir·šū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ba·‘ă·ḏî ū·ḇə·‘aḏ- hā·‘ām ū·ḇə·‘aḏ kāl- yə·hū·ḏāh ‘al- diḇ·rê haz·zeh has·sê·p̄er han·nim·ṣā kî- ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh ḥă·maṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer- hî niṣ·ṣə·ṯāh ḇā·nū ‘al ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū lō- šā·mə·‘ū ‘al- diḇ·rê haz·zeh has·sê·p̄er la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḵāl- hak·kā·ṯūḇ ‘ā·lê·nū — WLC · 13
Huldah’s Prophecy

So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went and spoke to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.

And [Huldah] said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you -

that this is what the LORD… says: I am about to bring calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read,

כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י אָמַ֣ר מֵבִ֥יא רָעָ֛ה אֶל־ הַזֶּ֖ה הַמָּק֥וֹם וְעַל־ יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו אֵ֚ת כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י הַסֵּ֔פֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ קָרָ֖א kōh Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·ḇî rā·‘āh ’el- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm wə·‘al- yō·šə·ḇāw ’êṯ kāl- diḇ·rê has·sê·p̄er ’ă·šer me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh qā·rā — WLC · 16

because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be kindled against this place and will not be quenched.’

But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him… that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,

because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before Me,… I have heard [you],’ declares the LORD.

יַ֠עַן לְבָ֨בְךָ֜ רַךְ־ וַתִּכָּנַ֣ע׀ מִפְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֡ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּרְתִּי֩ עַל־ הַזֶּ֜ה הַמָּק֨וֹם וְעַל־ יֹשְׁבָ֗יו לִהְי֤וֹת לְשַׁמָּה֙ וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה וַתִּקְרַע֙ אֶת־ בְּגָדֶ֔יךָ וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה לְפָנָ֑י וְגַ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ya·‘an lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā raḵ- wat·tik·kā·na‘ mip·pə·nê Yah·weh bə·šā·mə·‘ă·ḵā ’ă·šer dib·bar·tî ‘al- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm wə·‘al- yō·šə·ḇāw lih·yō·wṯ lə·šam·māh wə·liq·lā·lāh wat·tiq·ra‘ ’eṯ- bə·ḡā·ḏe·ḵā wat·tiḇ·keh lə·p̄ā·nāy wə·ḡam ’ā·nō·ḵî šā·ma‘·tî nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 19

‘Therefore vvv I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the calamity that I will bring on this place.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
