Manasseh Reigns in Judah
1
Manasseh was twelve… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five… years. His mother’s vvv name was Hephzibah.
𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤇𐤐𐤑𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤄

And he did evil in the sight of the LORD by following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites…

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כְּתֽוֹעֲבֹת֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה הוֹרִ֣ישׁ מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ way·ya·‘aś hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh kə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇōṯ hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer Yah·weh hō·w·rîš mip·pə·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 2

For he rebuilt… the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed, and he raised up altars for Baal. He made an Asherah pole, as King Ahab of Israel had done, and he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.

וַיָּ֗שָׁב וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ אֶת־ הַבָּמ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָבִ֑יו חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ אִבַּ֖ד וַיָּ֨קֶם מִזְבְּחֹ֜ת לַבַּ֗עַל וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אֲשֵׁרָה֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר מֶ֣לֶךְ אַחְאָב֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עָשָׂ֗ה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ד אֹתָֽם׃ לְכָל־ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם way·yā·šāḇ way·yi·ḇen ’eṯ- hab·bā·mō·wṯ ’ă·šer ’ā·ḇîw ḥiz·qî·yā·hū ’ib·baḏ way·yā·qem miz·bə·ḥōṯ lab·ba·‘al way·ya·‘aś ’ă·šê·rāh ka·’ă·šer me·leḵ ’aḥ·’āḇ yiś·rā·’êl ‘ā·śāh way·yiš·ta·ḥū way·ya·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’ō·ṯām lə·ḵāl ṣə·ḇā haš·šā·ma·yim — WLC · 3

[Manasseh] also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem I will put My Name.”

וּבָנָ֥ה מִזְבְּחֹ֖ת בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם אָשִׂ֥ים אֶת־ שְׁמִֽי׃ ū·ḇā·nāh miz·bə·ḥōṯ bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ā·mar bî·rū·šā·lim ’ā·śîm ’eṯ- šə·mî — WLC · 4

In both courtyards of the house of the LORD, he built altars to all the host of heaven.

בִּשְׁתֵּ֖י חַצְר֥וֹת בֵּית־ יְהוָֽה׃ וַיִּ֥בֶן מִזְבְּח֖וֹת לְכָל־ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם biš·tê ḥaṣ·rō·wṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh way·yi·ḇen miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ lə·ḵāl ṣə·ḇā haš·šā·mā·yim — WLC · 5

He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.

וְהֶעֱבִ֤יר בְּנוֹ֙ אֶת־ בָּאֵ֔שׁ וְעוֹנֵ֣ן וְנִחֵ֔שׁ וְעָ֥שָׂה א֖וֹב וְיִדְּעֹנִ֑ים לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת הִרְבָּ֗ה הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לְהַכְעִֽיס׃ wə·he·‘ĕ·ḇîr bə·nōw ’eṯ- bā·’êš wə·‘ō·w·nên wə·ni·ḥêš wə·‘ā·śāh ’ō·wḇ wə·yid·də·‘ō·nîm la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hir·bāh hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh lə·haḵ·‘îs — WLC · 6

Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made and set it up in the temple, of which the LORD had said to David… and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name forever.

פֶּ֥סֶל הָאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיָּ֕שֶׂם אֶת־ בַּבַּ֗יִת אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֤ר אֶל־ דָּוִד֙ וְאֶל־ בְנ֔וֹ שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה הַזֶּ֜ה בַּבַּ֨יִת וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּחַ֙רְתִּי֙ מִכֹּל֙ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָשִׂ֥ים אֶת־ שְׁמִ֖י לְעוֹלָֽם׃ pe·sel hā·’ă·šê·rāh ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh way·yā·śem ’eṯ- bab·ba·yiṯ ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’el- dā·wiḏ wə·’el- ḇə·nōw šə·lō·mōh haz·zeh bab·ba·yiṯ ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim ’ă·šer bā·ḥar·tî mik·kōl šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·śîm ’eṯ- šə·mî lə·‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 7

I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to wander from the land that I gave to their fathers, if only they are careful to do all I have commanded them— the whole Law that My servant Moses commanded them.”
𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤎𐤉𐤐 𐤓𐤂𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤌 𐤓𐤒 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤌
וְלֹ֣א אֹסִ֗יף רֶ֣גֶל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהָנִיד֙ מִן־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַֽאֲבוֹתָ֑ם אִם־ רַ֣ק׀ יִשְׁמְר֣וּ לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת כְּכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֔ים וּלְכָל־ הַ֨תּוֹרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ עַבְדִּ֥י מֹשֶֽׁה׃ צִוָּ֥ה אֹתָ֖ם wə·lō ’ō·sîp̄ re·ḡel yiś·rā·’êl lə·hā·nîḏ min- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām ’im- raq yiš·mə·rū la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯîm ū·lə·ḵāl- hat·tō·w·rāh ’ă·šer- ‘aḇ·dî mō·šeh ṣiw·wāh ’ō·ṯām — WLC · 8

But [the people] did not listen and Manasseh led them astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites…
𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וְלֹ֖א שָׁמֵ֑עוּ מְנַשֶּׁה֙ וַיַּתְעֵ֤ם לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת אֶת־ הָרָ֔ע מִן־ הַ֨גּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה הִשְׁמִ֣יד מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·lō šā·mê·‘ū mə·naš·šeh way·yaṯ·‘êm la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’eṯ- hā·rā‘ min- hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer Yah·weh hiš·mîḏ mip·pə·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 9
Manasseh’s Idolatries Rebuked

And the LORD spoke through His servants the prophets, saying,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוָ֛ה וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר בְּיַד־ עֲבָדָ֥יו הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr bə·yaḏ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw han·nə·ḇî·’îm lê·mōr — WLC · 10

“Since Manasseh king of Judah has committed all these abominations, acting more wickedly than the Amorites who preceded him -, and with his idols has caused Judah to sin,
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤂𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤐 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤈𐤀
יַעַן֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָה֙ עָשָׂ֜ה מִכֹּ֛ל הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַתֹּעֵב֣וֹת הֵרַ֕ע הָאֱמֹרִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲשֶׁר־ לְפָנָ֑יו עָשׂ֥וּ גַֽם־ בְּגִלּוּלָֽיו׃פ אֶת־ יְהוּדָ֖ה וַיַּחֲטִ֥א ya·‘an ’ă·šer mə·naš·šeh me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh ‘ā·śāh mik·kōl hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ hê·ra‘ hā·’ĕ·mō·rî ’ă·šer ’ă·šer- lə·p̄ā·nāw ‘ā·śū ḡam- bə·ḡil·lū·lāw ’eṯ- yə·hū·ḏāh way·ya·ḥă·ṭi — WLC · 11

- this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am bringing [such] calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah that [the news] will reverberate vvv in the ears of all who hear it.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤑𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤅
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֤ר הִנְנִי֙ מֵבִ֣יא רָעָ֔ה עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֙ תִּצַּ֖לְנָה שְׁתֵּ֥י אָזְנָֽיו׃ כָּל־ שֹׁמְעָיו lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar hin·nî mê·ḇî rā·‘āh ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim wî·hū·ḏāh ’ă·šer tiṣ·ṣal·nāh šə·tê ’ā·zə·nāw kāl- šō·mə·ʿå̄w — WLC · 12

I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plumb line used against the house of Ahab, and I will wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes out a bowl— wiping [it] and turning [it] vvv upside down.
𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤒𐤋𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄
וְנָטִ֣יתִי עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם אֵ֚ת קָ֣ו שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וְאֶת־ מִשְׁקֹ֖לֶת בֵּ֣ית אַחְאָ֑ב וּמָחִ֨יתִי אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ יִמְחֶ֤ה אֶת־ הַצַּלַּ֙חַת֙ מָחָ֔ה וְהָפַ֖ךְ עַל־ פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim ’êṯ qāw šō·mə·rō·wn wə·’eṯ- miš·qō·leṯ bêṯ ’aḥ·’āḇ ū·mā·ḥî·ṯî ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim ka·’ă·šer- yim·ḥeh ’eṯ- haṣ·ṣal·la·ḥaṯ mā·ḥāh wə·hā·p̄aḵ ‘al- pā·ne·hā — WLC · 13

So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hands of their enemies. And they will become plunder and spoil to all their enemies,
𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤎𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌
וְנָטַשְׁתִּ֗י אֵ֚ת שְׁאֵרִ֣ית נַחֲלָתִ֔י וּנְתַתִּ֖ים בְּיַ֣ד אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֑ם וְהָי֥וּ לְבַ֛ז וְלִמְשִׁסָּ֖ה לְכָל־ אֹיְבֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·nā·ṭaš·tî ’êṯ šə·’ê·rîṯ na·ḥă·lā·ṯî ū·nə·ṯat·tîm bə·yaḏ ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem wə·hā·yū lə·ḇaz wə·lim·šis·sāh lə·ḵāl ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem — WLC · 14

because they have done evil in My sight… and have provoked Me {to anger} from the day their fathers came out of Egypt until this day.’”

Moreover, Manasseh shed so much… innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to end…, in addition to the sin that he had caused Judah to commit, doing evil in the sight of the LORD.

And Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And his son Amon reigned in his place.

Amon Reigns in Judah

Amon was twenty-two… years old… when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. His mother’s name was Meshullemeth daughter of Haruz; she was from Jotbah.

He walked in all the ways of his father -, and he served and worshiped the idols his father had served.

He abandoned the LORD, the God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the LORD.

Then the servants of Amon conspired against him and killed the king in his palace.

But the people of the land killed all [those] who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king… in his place.

And he was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza, and his son Josiah reigned in his place.
