Chapter 2

Elijah Taken Up to Heaven

1

Shortly before the LORD took Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋

וַיְהִ֗י יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ בְּהַעֲל֤וֹת אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם בַּֽסְעָרָ֖ה אֵלִיָּ֛הוּ וֶאֱלִישָׁ֖ע וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ מִן־ הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ way·hî Yah·weh ’eṯ- bə·ha·‘ă·lō·wṯ ’ê·lî·yā·hū haš·šā·mā·yim bas·‘ā·rāh ’ê·lî·yā·hū we·’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yê·leḵ min- hag·gil·gālWLC · 1

and Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to vvv Bethel.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.

אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֶל־ אֱלִישָׁ֜ע נָ֣א שֵֽׁב־ פֹ֗ה כִּ֤י יְהוָה֙ שְׁלָחַ֣נִי עַד־ בֵּֽית־ אֵ֔ל אֱלִישָׁ֔ע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֥ה חַי־ נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וְחֵֽי־ אִם־ אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ וַיֵּרְד֖וּ בֵּֽית־ אֵֽל׃ ’ê·lî·yā·hū way·yō·mer ’el- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ nā šêḇ- p̄ōh kî Yah·weh šə·lā·ḥa·nî ‘aḏ- bêṯ- ’êl ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yō·mer Yah·weh ḥay- nap̄·šə·ḵā wə·ḥê- ’im- ’e·‘ez·ḇe·kā way·yê·rə·ḏū bêṯ- ’êlWLC · 2

Then the sons of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and said,… “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak [of it].”

And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.

Then the sons of the prophets at Jericho came up to Elisha and said,… “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak [of it].”

And Elijah said to [Elisha], “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤐𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤊 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅

אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ ל֨וֹ נָ֣א שֵֽׁב־ פֹ֗ה כִּ֤י יְהוָה֙ שְׁלָחַ֣נִי הַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר יְהוָ֥ה חַי־ נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וְחֵֽי־ אִם־ אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ ’ê·lî·yā·hū way·yō·mer lōw nā šêḇ- p̄ōh kî Yah·weh šə·lā·ḥa·nî hay·yar·dê·nāh way·yō·mer Yah·weh ḥay- nap̄·šə·ḵā wə·ḥê- ’im- ’e·‘ez·ḇe·kā šə·nê·hem way·yê·lə·ḵūWLC · 6

Then a company of fifty of the sons of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing [Elijah and Elisha] as the two of them stood by the Jordan.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤒 𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍

אִ֜ישׁ וַחֲמִשִּׁ֨ים מִבְּנֵ֤י הַנְּבִיאִים֙ הָֽלְכ֔וּ וַיַּעַמְד֥וּ מֵרָח֑וֹק מִנֶּ֖גֶד וּשְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם עָמְד֥וּ עַל־ הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ ’îš wa·ḥă·miš·šîm mib·bə·nê han·nə·ḇî·’îm hā·lə·ḵū way·ya·‘am·ḏū mê·rā·ḥō·wq min·ne·ḡeḏ ū·šə·nê·hem ‘ā·mə·ḏū ‘al- hay·yar·dênWLC · 7

And Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the waters, which parted to the right and to the left, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤑𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤄

אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ אֶת־ וַיִּקַּח֩ אַדַּרְתּ֤וֹ וַיִּגְלֹם֙ וַיַּכֶּ֣ה אֶת־ הַמַּ֔יִם וַיֵּחָצ֖וּ הֵ֣נָּה וָהֵ֑נָּה שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ בֶּחָרָבָֽה׃ ’ê·lî·yā·hū ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ ’ad·dar·tōw way·yiḡ·lōm way·yak·keh ’eṯ- ham·ma·yim way·yê·ḥā·ṣū hên·nāh wā·hên·nāh šə·nê·hem way·ya·‘aḇ·rū be·ḥā·rā·ḇāhWLC · 8

After they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

וַיְהִ֣י כְעָבְרָ֗ם וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ אָמַ֤ר אֶל־ אֱלִישָׁע֙ שְׁאַל֙ מָ֣ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ לָּ֔ךְ בְּטֶ֖רֶם אֶלָּקַ֣ח מֵעִמָּ֑ךְ נָ֛א וִֽיהִי־ אֵלָֽי׃ שְׁנַ֥יִם פִּֽי־ בְּרוּחֲךָ֖ אֱלִישָׁ֔ע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר way·hî ḵə·‘ā·ḇə·rām wə·’ê·lî·yā·hū ’ā·mar ’el- ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ šə·’al māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lāḵ bə·ṭe·rem ’el·lā·qaḥ mê·‘im·māḵ nā wî·hî- ’ê·lāy šə·na·yim pî- bə·rū·ḥă·ḵā ’ĕ·lî·šā‘ way·yō·merWLC · 9

“You have requested a difficult thing,” said Elijah. “[Nevertheless,] if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours… But if not, then it will not be [so].”

𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄

לִשְׁא֑וֹל הִקְשִׁ֣יתָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אִם־ תִּרְאֶ֨ה אֹתִ֜י לֻקָּ֤ח מֵֽאִתָּךְ֙ יְהִֽי־ לְךָ֣ כֵ֔ן וְאִם־ אַ֖יִן לֹ֥א יִהְיֶֽה׃ liš·’ō·wl hiq·šî·ṯā way·yō·mer ’im- tir·’eh ’ō·ṯî luq·qāḥ mê·’it·tāḵ yə·hî- lə·ḵā ḵên wə·’im- ’a·yin lō yih·yehWLC · 10

  • As they were walking along… and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire with horses of fire appeared and separated… the two of them, and Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉 𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤄

וַיְהִ֗י הֵ֣מָּה הֹלְכִ֤ים הָלוֹךְ֙ וְדַבֵּ֔ר וְהִנֵּ֤ה רֶֽכֶב־ אֵשׁ֙ וְס֣וּסֵי אֵ֔שׁ וַיַּפְרִ֖דוּ בֵּ֣ין שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ וַיַּ֙עַל֙ הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ בַּֽסְעָרָ֖ה way·hî hêm·māh hō·lə·ḵîm hā·lō·wḵ wə·ḏab·bêr wə·hin·nêh re·ḵeḇ- ’êš wə·sū·sê ’êš way·yap̄·ri·ḏū bên šə·nê·hem ’ê·lî·yā·hū way·ya·‘al haš·šā·mā·yim bas·sə·‘ā·rāhWLC · 11

As Elisha watched, he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And he saw [Elijah] no more. So taking hold of his own clothes, he tore them in two…

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤏 𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤁𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌

וֶאֱלִישָׁ֣ע רֹאֶ֗ה וְה֤וּא מְצַעֵק֙ אָבִ֣י׀ אָבִ֗י רֶ֤כֶב וּפָ֣רָשָׁ֔יו יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ רָאָ֖הוּ וְלֹ֥א ע֑וֹד וַֽיַּחֲזֵק֙ בִּבְגָדָ֔יו וַיִּקְרָעֵ֖ם לִשְׁנַ֥יִם קְרָעִֽים׃ we·’ĕ·lî·šā‘ rō·’eh wə·hū mə·ṣa·‘êq ’ā·ḇî ’ā·ḇî re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šāw yiś·rā·’êl rā·’ā·hū wə·lō ‘ō·wḏ way·ya·ḥă·zêq biḇ·ḡā·ḏāw way·yiq·rā·‘êm liš·na·yim qə·rā·‘îmWLC · 12

Elisha also picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah, and he went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤐𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍

וַיָּ֙רֶם֙ אֶת־ אַדֶּ֣רֶת אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָפְלָ֖ה מֵעָלָ֑יו אֵלִיָּ֔הוּ וַיָּ֥שָׁב וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד עַל־ שְׂפַ֥ת הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ way·yā·rem ’eṯ- ’ad·de·reṯ ’ă·šer nā·p̄ə·lāh mê·‘ā·lāw ’ê·lî·yā·hū way·yā·šāḇ way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ ‘al- śə·p̄aṯ hay·yar·dênWLC · 13

Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters. “Where now [is] the LORD, the God of Elijah?”… he asked. And when he had struck the waters -, they parted to the right and to the left, and Elisha crossed over.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

When the sons of the prophets who [were] watching him from Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.

“Look now,” they said to Elisha, “we your servants have fifty valiant men… -. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,” [Elisha] replied.

But when they pressed him to the point of embarrassment, he said, “Send [them].” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find [Elijah].

When they returned to [Elisha], who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?”

Elisha Heals the Waters of Jericho

Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please note, our lord, that the city’s location is good, as [you] can see. But the water [is] bad and the land is unfruitful.”

“Bring me a new bowl,” he replied, “and put some salt in it.” So they brought [it] to him,

and [Elisha] went out to the spring…, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. No longer will it cause… death or unfruitfulness.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ אֶל־ מוֹצָ֣א הַמַּ֔יִם וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־ מֶ֑לַח שָׁ֖ם וַיֹּ֜אמֶר כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר רִפִּ֙אתִי֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה לַמַּ֣יִם לֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד יִהְיֶ֥ה מִשָּׁ֛ם מָ֥וֶת וּמְשַׁכָּֽלֶת׃ way·yê·ṣê ’el- mō·w·ṣā ham·ma·yim way·yaš·leḵ- me·laḥ šām way·yō·mer kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar rip·pi·ṯî hā·’êl·leh lam·ma·yim lō- ‘ō·wḏ yih·yeh miš·šām mā·weṯ ū·mə·šak·kā·leṯWLC · 21

And the waters [there] have been healthy to this day, according to the word spoken by Elisha.

Elisha Mocked

From there, Elisha went up to Bethel, and as he was walking up the road, a group of boys… came out of the city and jeered at him, chanting “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”

Then he turned around, looked at them, and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Suddenly two female bears came out of the woods and mauled… forty-two… of the boys.

And Elisha went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
