Athaliah and Joash
1
When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs.
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤆𐤓𐤏
וַֽעֲתַלְיָה֙ אֵ֣ם אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ וְרָאֲתָה כִּ֣י בְּנָ֑הּ מֵ֣ת וַתָּ֙קָם֙ וַתְּאַבֵּ֔ד אֵ֖ת כָּל־ הַמַּמְלָכָֽה׃ זֶ֥רַע wa·‘ă·ṯal·yāh ’êm ’ă·ḥaz·yā·hū wə·rå̄·ʾă·ṯå̄h kî bə·nāh mêṯ wat·tā·qām wat·tə·’ab·bêḏ ’êṯ kāl- ham·mam·lā·ḵāh ze·ra‘ — WLC · 1

But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king [who were] being murdered -. [She put] him and his nurse in a bedroom… to hide him from Athaliah, and he was not killed.

And [Joash] remained hidden with [his nurse] in the house of the LORD for six years while Athaliah ruled… the land.

וַיְהִ֤י מִתְחַבֵּ֖א אִתָּהּ֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה שֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים וַעֲתַלְיָ֖ה מֹלֶ֥כֶת עַל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ way·hî miṯ·ḥab·bê ’it·tāh bêṯ Yah·weh šêš šā·nîm wa·‘ă·ṯal·yāh mō·le·ḵeṯ ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 3
Joash Anointed King of Judah

Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for… the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought - into the house of the LORD. [There]… he made a covenant with them and put them under oath… He showed them the king’s son

הַ֠שְּׁבִיעִית וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה יְהוֹיָדָ֜ע שָׁלַ֨ח וַיִּקַּ֣ח׀ אֶת־ שָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּאיוֹת לַכָּרִי֙ וְלָ֣רָצִ֔ים וַיָּבֵ֥א אֹתָ֛ם אֵלָ֖יו בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּכְרֹת֩ בְּרִ֜ית לָהֶ֨ם וַיַּשְׁבַּ֤ע אֹתָם֙ וַיַּ֥רְא אֹתָ֖ם אֶת־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ בֶּן־ haš·šə·ḇî·‘îṯ ū·ḇaš·šā·nāh yə·hō·w·yā·ḏā‘ šā·laḥ way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- śā·rê ham·mē·yōṯ lak·kā·rî wə·lā·rā·ṣîm way·yā·ḇê ’ō·ṯām ’ê·lāw bêṯ Yah·weh bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh way·yiḵ·rōṯ bə·rîṯ lā·hem way·yaš·ba‘ ’ō·ṯām way·yar ’ō·ṯām ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ ben- — WLC · 4

and commanded them,… “This… is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard… the royal palace,

וַיְצַוֵּ֣ם לֵאמֹ֔ר זֶ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעֲשׂ֑וּן הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֤ית מִכֶּם֙ בָּאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת וְשֹׁ֣מְרֵ֔י מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ בֵּ֥ית way·ṣaw·wêm lê·mōr zeh had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer ta·‘ă·śūn haš·šə·li·šîṯ mik·kem bā·’ê haš·šab·bāṯ wə·šō·mə·rê miš·me·reṯ ham·me·leḵ bêṯ — WLC · 5

a third [shall be] at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guards. You are to take turns guarding - the temple—

וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ בְּשַׁ֣עַר ס֔וּר וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֥ית בַּשַּׁ֖עַר אַחַ֣ר הָרָצִ֑ים מַסָּֽח׃ וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֛ם אֶת־ מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת הַבַּ֖יִת wə·haš·šə·li·šîṯ bə·ša·‘ar sūr wə·haš·šə·li·šîṯ baš·ša·‘ar ’a·ḥar hā·rā·ṣîm mas·sāḥ ū·šə·mar·tem ’eṯ- miš·me·reṯ hab·ba·yiṯ — WLC · 6

the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath are to guard - the house of the LORD for the king.
𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊
וּשְׁתֵּ֤י הַיָּדוֹת֙ בָּכֶ֔ם כֹּ֖ל יֹצְאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת וְשָֽׁמְר֛וּ אֶת־ מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ ū·šə·tê hay·yā·ḏō·wṯ bā·ḵem kōl yō·ṣə·’ê haš·šab·bāṯ wə·šā·mə·rū ’eṯ- miš·me·reṯ bêṯ- Yah·weh ’el- ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 7

You must surround… the king… with weapons in hand, and anyone who approaches… the ranks must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes…”

וְהִקַּפְתֶּ֨ם עַל־ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ סָבִ֗יב וְכֵלָ֣יו בְּיָד֔וֹ אִ֚ישׁ וְהַבָּ֥א אֶל־ הַשְּׂדֵר֖וֹת יוּמָ֑ת וִהְי֥וּ אֶת־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בְּצֵאת֥וֹ וּבְבֹאֽוֹ׃ wə·hiq·qap̄·tem ‘al- ham·me·leḵ sā·ḇîḇ wə·ḵê·lāw bə·yā·ḏōw ’îš wə·hab·bā ’el- haś·śə·ḏê·rō·wṯ yū·māṯ wih·yū ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ bə·ṣê·ṯōw ū·ḇə·ḇō·’ōw — WLC · 8

So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men— those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty…— and came to Jehoiada the priest.

Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields of King David from the house of the LORD.

הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּאיוֹת אֶֽת־ הַחֲנִית֙ וְאֶת־ הַשְּׁלָטִ֔ים לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּבֵ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ hak·kō·hên way·yit·tên lə·śā·rê ham·mē·yōṯ ’eṯ- ha·ḥă·nîṯ wə·’eṯ- haš·šə·lā·ṭîm lam·me·leḵ dā·wiḏ ’ă·šer ’ă·šer bə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 10

And the guards… stood with weapons in hand vvv surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
𐤄𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤐 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤕𐤐 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕
הָרָצִ֜ים אִ֣ישׁ׀ וַיַּעַמְד֨וּ וְכֵלָ֣יו בְּיָד֗וֹ עַל־ סָבִֽיב׃ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ וְלַבָּ֑יִת הַיְמָנִית֙ מִכֶּ֨תֶף הַבַּ֤יִת עַד־ הַשְּׂמָאלִ֔ית כֶּ֤תֶף הַבַּ֙יִת֙ hā·rā·ṣîm ’îš way·ya·‘am·ḏū wə·ḵê·lāw bə·yā·ḏōw ‘al- sā·ḇîḇ ham·me·leḵ lam·miz·bê·aḥ wə·lab·bā·yiṯ hay·mā·nîṯ mik·ke·ṯep̄ hab·ba·yiṯ ‘aḏ- haś·śə·mā·lîṯ ke·ṯep̄ hab·ba·yiṯ — WLC · 11

Then [Jehoiada] brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and [the people] clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”

The Death of Athaliah

When Athaliah heard the noise from the guards [and] the people, she went out to the people in the house of the LORD.

עֲתַלְיָ֔ה אֶת־ וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע ק֥וֹל הָֽרָצִ֖ין הָעָ֑ם וַתָּבֹ֥א אֶל־ הָעָ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ ‘ă·ṯal·yāh ’eṯ- wat·tiš·ma‘ qō·wl hā·rā·ṣîn hā·‘ām wat·tā·ḇō ’el- hā·‘ām bêṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 13

And she looked out and saw the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason! Treason!”

וַתֵּ֡רֶא וְהִנֵּ֣ה הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ עֹמֵ֨ד עַֽל־ הָעַמּ֜וּד כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֗ט וְהַשָּׂרִ֤ים וְהַחֲצֹֽצְרוֹת֙ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְכָל־ עַ֤ם הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ שָׂמֵ֔חַ וְתֹקֵ֖עַ בַּחֲצֹֽצְר֑וֹת עֲתַלְיָה֙ אֶת־ וַתִּקְרַ֤ע בְּגָדֶ֔יהָ וַתִּקְרָ֖א קֶ֥שֶׁר קָֽשֶׁר׃ס wat·tê·re wə·hin·nêh ham·me·leḵ ‘ō·mêḏ ‘al- hā·‘am·mūḏ kam·miš·pāṭ wə·haś·śā·rîm wə·ha·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ ’el- ham·me·leḵ wə·ḵāl ‘am hā·’ā·reṣ śā·mê·aḥ wə·ṯō·qê·a‘ ba·ḥă·ṣō·ṣə·rō·wṯ ‘ă·ṯal·yāh ’eṯ- wat·tiq·ra‘ bə·ḡā·ḏe·hā wat·tiq·rā qe·šer qā·šer — WLC · 14

And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army “Bring her out -… between the ranks, and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”

So they seized vvv [Athaliah] as she reached… the horses’ entrance to the palace grounds…, and there she was put to death.

Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORD

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king… and the people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also [made a covenant] between the king and the people.

So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces…, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. And Jehoiada the priest posted guards for the house of the LORD.

He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king {down} from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace by way of the Gate of the Guards. Then [Joash] took his seat on the royal throne,

and all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because Athaliah had been put to the sword at the royal palace.
