Chapter 1

Elijah Denounces Ahaziah

1

After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.

𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤀𐤁 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

אַחֲרֵ֖י מ֥וֹת אַחְאָֽב׃ מוֹאָב֙ וַיִּפְשַׁ֤ע בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל ’a·ḥă·rê mō·wṯ ’aḥ·’āḇ mō·w·’āḇ way·yip̄·ša‘ bə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 1

Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers and instructed them:… “Go inquire vvv of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury.”

אֲחַזְיָ֜ה וַיִּפֹּ֨ל בְּעַ֣ד הַשְּׂבָכָ֗ה בַּעֲלִיָּת֛וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּשֹׁמְר֖וֹן וַיָּ֑חַל וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָכִ֔ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ לְכ֣וּ דִרְשׁ֗וּ בְּבַ֤עַל זְבוּב֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י עֶקְר֔וֹן אִם־ אֶחְיֶ֖ה זֶֽה׃ס מֵחֳלִ֥י ’ă·ḥaz·yāh way·yip·pōl bə·‘aḏ haś·śə·ḇā·ḵāh ba·‘ă·lî·yā·ṯōw ’ă·šer bə·šō·mə·rō·wn way·yā·ḥal way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem lə·ḵū ḏir·šū bə·ḇa·‘al zə·ḇūḇ ’ĕ·lō·hê ‘eq·rō·wn ’im- ’eḥ·yeh zeh mê·ḥo·lîWLC · 2

But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite,… “Go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them,… ‘[Is [it] because [there is] no God in Israel that you are on your way to inquire vvv of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’

𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤁𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤆𐤁𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤒𐤓𐤅𐤍

וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה דִּבֶּר֙ אֶל־ אֵלִיָּ֣ה הַתִּשְׁבִּ֔י ק֣וּם עֲלֵ֔ה לִקְרַ֖את מַלְאֲכֵ֣י מֶֽלֶךְ־ שֹׁמְר֑וֹן וְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י אֵין־ אֱלֹהִים֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתֶּם֙ הֹֽלְכִ֔ים לִדְרֹ֕שׁ בְּבַ֥עַל זְב֖וּב אֱלֹהֵ֥י עֶקְרֽוֹן׃ ū·mal·’aḵ Yah·weh dib·ber ’el- ’ê·lî·yāh hat·tiš·bî qūm ‘ă·lêh liq·raṯ mal·’ă·ḵê me·leḵ- šō·mə·rō·wn wə·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·hem ha·mib·bə·lî ’ên- ’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·yiś·rā·’êl ’at·tem hō·lə·ḵîm liḏ·rōš bə·ḇa·‘al zə·ḇūḇ ’ĕ·lō·hê ‘eq·rō·wnWLC · 3

Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not get up from… the bed on which you are lying… You will surely die…’” So Elijah departed.

𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊

וְלָכֵן֙ כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר לֹֽא־ תֵרֵ֥ד מִמֶּ֖נָּה כִּ֣י הַמִּטָּ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלִ֥יתָ שָּׁ֛ם מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת אֵלִיָּֽה׃ וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ wə·lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar lō- ṯê·rêḏ mim·men·nāh kî ham·miṭ·ṭāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·lî·ṯā šām mō·wṯ tā·mūṯ ’ê·lî·yāh way·yê·leḵWLC · 4

When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them,… “Why… have you returned?”

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤌

הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים וַיָּשׁ֥וּבוּ אֵלָ֑יו וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מַה־ זֶּ֥ה שַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yā·šū·ḇū ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem mah- zeh šaḇ·temWLC · 5

They replied “A man came up to meet us and said -, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire vvv of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying… - You will surely die…’”

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו אִ֣ישׁ׀ עָלָ֣ה לִקְרָאתֵ֗נוּ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֵינוּ֮ לְכ֣וּ שׁוּבוּ֮ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁלַ֣ח אֶתְכֶם֒ וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֣ם אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י אֵין־ אֱלֹהִים֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתָּ֣ה שֹׁלֵ֔חַ לִדְרֹ֕שׁ בְּבַ֥עַל זְב֖וּב אֱלֹהֵ֣י עֶקְר֑וֹן לָ֠כֵן לֹֽא־ תֵרֵ֥ד הַמִּטָּ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָלִ֥יתָ שָּׁ֛ם מִמֶּ֖נָּה כִּֽי־ מ֥וֹת תָּמֽוּת׃ way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw ’îš ‘ā·lāh liq·rā·ṯê·nū way·yō·mer ’ê·lê·nū lə·ḵū šū·ḇū ’el- ham·me·leḵ ’ă·šer- šā·laḥ ’eṯ·ḵem wə·ḏib·bar·tem ’ê·lāw kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ha·mib·bə·lî ’ên- ’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·yiś·rā·’êl ’at·tāh šō·lê·aḥ liḏ·rōš bə·ḇa·‘al zə·ḇūḇ ’ĕ·lō·hê ‘eq·rō·wn lā·ḵên lō- ṯê·rêḏ ham·miṭ·ṭāh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·lî·ṯā šām mim·men·nāh kî- mō·wṯ tā·mūṯWLC · 6

The king asked them,… “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?” -

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם מֶ֚ה מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָלָ֖ה לִקְרַאתְכֶ֑ם וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אֶת־ way·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·hem meh miš·paṭ hā·’îš ’ă·šer ‘ā·lāh liq·raṯ·ḵem way·ḏab·bêr hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·lê·ḵem ’eṯ-WLC · 7

“[He was] a hairy man,… they answered, “… with a leather… belt around his waist.” “It [was] Elijah the Tishbite,” said [the king].

𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤆𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓

שֵׂעָ֔ר אִ֚ישׁ בַּ֣עַל וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו ע֖וֹר אָז֣וּר וְאֵז֥וֹר בְּמָתְנָ֑יו הֽוּא׃ אֵלִיָּ֥ה הַתִּשְׁבִּ֖י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר śê·‘ār ’îš ba·‘al way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw ‘ō·wr ’ā·zūr wə·’ê·zō·wr bə·mā·ṯə·nāw hū ’ê·lî·yāh hat·tiš·bî way·yō·marWLC · 8

Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain vvv with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to [Elijah],… who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’”

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤓𐤃𐤄

וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח אֵלָ֛יו שַׂר־ חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֑יו וַיַּ֣עַל אֵלָ֗יו וְהִנֵּה֙ יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֔ר וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלָ֔יו אִ֚ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דִּבֶּ֖ר רֵֽדָה׃ way·yiš·laḥ ’ê·lāw śar- ḥă·miš·šîm wa·ḥă·miš·šāw way·ya·‘al ’ê·lāw wə·hin·nêh yō·šêḇ ‘al- rōš hā·hār way·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lāw ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ham·me·leḵ dib·ber rê·ḏāhWLC · 9

Elijah… answered… the captain…, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and [your] fifty [men].” And fire came down from heaven and consumed [the captain] and [his] fifty men.

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔 𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤅

אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ וַיְדַבֵּר֮ וַיַּעֲנֶ֣ה אֶל־ שַׂ֣ר הַחֲמִשִּׁים֒ וְאִם־ אָ֔נִי אִ֤ישׁ אֱלֹהִים֙ אֵשׁ֙ תֵּ֤רֶד מִן־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְתֹאכַ֥ל אֹתְךָ֖ וְאֶת־ חֲמִשֶּׁ֑יךָ אֵשׁ֙ וַתֵּ֤רֶד מִן־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַתֹּ֥אכַל אֹת֖וֹ וְאֶת־ חֲמִשָּֽׁיו׃ ’ê·lî·yā·hū way·ḏab·bêr way·ya·‘ă·neh ’el- śar ha·ḥă·miš·šîm wə·’im- ’ā·nî ’îš ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êš tê·reḏ min- haš·šā·ma·yim wə·ṯō·ḵal ’ō·ṯə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- ḥă·miš·še·ḵā ’êš wat·tê·reḏ min- haš·šā·ma·yim wat·tō·ḵal ’ō·ṯōw wə·’eṯ- ḥă·miš·šāwWLC · 10

  • So the king sent to Elijah another captain… [with his] fifty [men]. And [the captain] said to [Elijah], “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down at once!’”

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤄

וַיָּ֜שָׁב וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח אֵלָ֛יו אַחֵ֖ר שַׂר־ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֑יו וַיַּ֙עַן֙ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלָ֔יו אִ֚ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים כֹּֽה־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אָמַ֥ר רֵֽדָה׃ מְהֵרָ֥ה way·yā·šāḇ way·yiš·laḥ ’ê·lāw ’a·ḥêr śar- ḥă·miš·šîm wa·ḥă·miš·šāw way·ya·‘an way·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lāw ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm kōh- ham·me·leḵ ’ā·mar rê·ḏāh mə·hê·rāhWLC · 11

Again Elijah… replied, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and [your] fifty [men].” And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed [the captain] and [his] fifty men.

𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔 𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤅

אֵלִיָּה֮ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶם֒ וַיַּ֣עַן אִם־ אָ֔נִי אִ֤ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֵשׁ֙ תֵּ֤רֶד מִן־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְתֹאכַ֥ל אֹתְךָ֖ וְאֶת־ חֲמִשֶּׁ֑יךָ אֵשׁ־ אֱלֹהִים֙ וַתֵּ֤רֶד מִן־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַתֹּ֥אכַל אֹת֖וֹ וְאֶת־ חֲמִשָּֽׁיו׃ ’ê·lî·yāh way·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·hem way·ya·‘an ’im- ’ā·nî ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êš tê·reḏ min- haš·šā·ma·yim wə·ṯō·ḵal ’ō·ṯə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- ḥă·miš·še·ḵā ’êš- ’ĕ·lō·hîm wat·tê·reḏ min- haš·šā·ma·yim wat·tō·ḵal ’ō·ṯōw wə·’eṯ- ḥă·miš·šāwWLC · 12

So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up,… fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him…, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours please be precious in your sight.

Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.”

Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.” So [Elijah] got up and went down with him to the king.

And Elijah said to King Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no… God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire vvv of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying… - You will surely die…”

Jehoram Succeeds Ahaziah

So [Ahaziah] died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. And since he had no son, Jehoram succeeded him in the second year of the reign of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat over Judah.
