Chapter 9
The LORD’s Response to Solomon
1
Now when Solomon had finished building the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and had achieved all that [he] had desired to do,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕𐤐 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤔𐤒 𐤇𐤐𐤑
וַיְהִי֙ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה כְּכַלּ֣וֹת לִבְנ֥וֹת אֶת־ בֵּית־ יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְאֵת֙ בֵּ֣ית לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃פ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה חֵ֣שֶׁק חָפֵ֖ץ way·hî šə·lō·mōh kə·ḵal·lō·wṯ liḇ·nō·wṯ ’eṯ- bêṯ- Yah·weh wə·’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ wə·’êṯ bêṯ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kāl- ’ă·šer šə·lō·mōh ḥê·šeq ḥā·p̄êṣ — WLC · 1

the LORD appeared to [him] a second [time], as He had appeared to him at Gibeon.

יְהוָ֛ה וַיֵּרָ֧א אֶל־ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה שֵׁנִ֑ית כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נִרְאָ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו בְּגִבְעֽוֹן׃ Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’el- šə·lō·mōh šê·nîṯ ka·’ă·šer nir·’āh ’ê·lāw bə·ḡiḇ·‘ō·wn — WLC · 2

And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer and petition - before Me. I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting My Name there forever…; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי אֶת־ תְּפִלָּתְךָ֣ וְאֶת־ תְּחִנָּתְךָ֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִתְחַנַּ֣נְתָּה לְפָנַי֒ הִקְדַּ֗שְׁתִּי אֶת־ הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הַבַּ֤יִת בָּנִ֔תָה לָשֽׂוּם־ שְׁמִ֥י שָׁ֖ם עַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם עֵינַ֧י וְלִבִּ֛י וְהָי֨וּ שָׁ֖ם כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw šā·ma‘·tî ’eṯ- tə·p̄il·lā·ṯə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- tə·ḥin·nā·ṯə·ḵā ’ă·šer hiṯ·ḥan·nan·tāh lə·p̄ā·nay hiq·daš·tî ’eṯ- haz·zeh ’ă·šer hab·ba·yiṯ bā·ni·ṯāh lā·śūm- šə·mî šām ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām ‘ê·nay wə·lib·bî wə·hā·yū šām kāl- hay·yā·mîm — WLC · 3

And as for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and uprightness, doing all I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances,
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤊 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉
וְאַתָּ֞ה אִם־ תֵּלֵ֣ךְ לְפָנַ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר אָבִ֙יךָ֙ דָּוִ֤ד הָלַ֜ךְ לֵבָ֣ב בְּתָם־ וּבְיֹ֔שֶׁר לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת כְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֑יךָ תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃ חֻקַּ֥י וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י wə·’at·tāh ’im- tê·lêḵ lə·p̄ā·nay ka·’ă·šer ’ā·ḇî·ḵā dā·wiḏ hā·laḵ lê·ḇāḇ bə·ṯām- ū·ḇə·yō·šer la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā tiš·mōr ḥuq·qay ū·miš·pā·ṭay — WLC · 4

then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever…, as I promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’

וַהֲקִ֨מֹתִ֜י אֶת־ מַֽמְלַכְתְּךָ֛ כִּסֵּ֧א עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעֹלָ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּ֗רְתִּי עַל־ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ דָּוִ֤ד לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹֽא־ יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֥א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wa·hă·qi·mō·ṯî ’eṯ- mam·laḵ·tə·ḵā kis·sê ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl lə·‘ō·lām ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tî ‘al- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā dā·wiḏ lê·mōr lō- yik·kā·rêṯ lə·ḵā ’îš mê·‘al kis·sê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 5

But if indeed you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep the commandments [and] statutes I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods -,
𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌
אִם־ שׁ֨וֹב אַתֶּ֤ם וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ תְּשֻׁב֜וּן מֵֽאַחֲרַ֔י וְלֹ֤א תִשְׁמְרוּ֙ מִצְוֺתַ֣י חֻקֹּתַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֗ם וַעֲבַדְתֶּם֙ וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם אֲחֵרִ֔ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים לָהֶֽם׃ ’im- šō·wḇ ’at·tem ū·ḇə·nê·ḵem tə·šu·ḇūn mê·’a·ḥă·ray wə·lō ṯiš·mə·rū miṣ·wō·ṯay ḥuq·qō·ṯay ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lip̄·nê·ḵem wa·hă·laḵ·tem wa·‘ă·ḇaḏ·tem wə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wî·ṯem ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lā·hem — WLC · 6

then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will banish from My presence this temple I have sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all peoples.

וְהִכְרַתִּ֣י אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מֵעַ֨ל פְּנֵ֤י הָאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣תִּי לָהֶ֔ם אֲשַׁלַּ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑י וְאֶת־ הַבַּ֙יִת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִקְדַּ֣שְׁתִּי לִשְׁמִ֔י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וְהָיָ֧ה לְמָשָׁ֥ל וְלִשְׁנִינָ֖ה בְּכָל־ הָעַמִּֽים׃ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl mê·‘al pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lā·hem ’ă·šal·laḥ mê·‘al pā·nāy wə·’eṯ- hab·ba·yiṯ ’ă·šer hiq·daš·tî liš·mî yiś·rā·’êl wə·hā·yāh lə·mā·šāl wə·liš·nî·nāh bə·ḵāl hā·‘am·mîm — WLC · 7

And [when] this temple has become a heap of rubble, all who pass by it will be appalled and will hiss and say, ‘Why… has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’
𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕
הַזֶּה֙ וְהַבַּ֤יִת יִהְיֶ֣ה עֶלְי֔וֹן כָּל־ עֹבֵ֥ר עָלָ֖יו יִשֹּׁ֣ם וְשָׁרָ֑ק וְאָמְר֗וּ עַל־ מֶ֨ה יְהוָה֙ עָשָׂ֤ה כָּ֔כָה הַזֹּ֖את לָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֶּֽה׃ וְלַבַּ֥יִת haz·zeh wə·hab·ba·yiṯ yih·yeh ‘el·yō·wn kāl- ‘ō·ḇêr ‘ā·lāw yiš·šōm wə·šā·rāq wə·’ā·mə·rū ‘al- meh Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh kā·ḵāh haz·zōṯ lā·’ā·reṣ haz·zeh wə·lab·ba·yiṯ — WLC · 8

And [others] will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them— because of this, the LORD has brought all this disaster upon them -.’”

וְאָמְר֗וּ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָזְב֜וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצִ֣יא אֲבֹתָם֮ אֶת־ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַיִם֒ וַֽיַּחֲזִ֙קוּ֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים בֵּאלֹהִ֣ים וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לָהֶ֖ם וַיַּעַבְדֻ֑ם עַל־ כֵּ֗ן יְהוָה֙ הֵבִ֤יא כָּל־ הַזֹּֽאת׃פ הָרָעָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת wə·’ā·mə·rū ‘al ’ă·šer ‘ā·zə·ḇū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem ’ă·šer hō·w·ṣî ’ă·ḇō·ṯām ’eṯ- mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim way·ya·ḥă·zi·qū ’ă·ḥê·rîm bê·lō·hîm way·yiš·ta·ḥū lā·hem way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏum ‘al- kên Yah·weh hê·ḇî kāl- haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh ‘ă·lê·hem ’êṯ — WLC · 9
Solomon’s Additional Achievements

Now at the end of the twenty years during which Solomon built these two houses, the house of the LORD and the royal palace,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕
וַיְהִ֗י מִקְצֵה֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה אֶת־ בָּנָ֥ה שְׁנֵ֣י הַבָּתִּ֑ים אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ בֵּ֥ית way·hî miq·ṣêh ‘eś·rîm šā·nāh ’ă·šer- šə·lō·mōh ’eṯ- bā·nāh šə·nê hab·bāt·tîm ’eṯ- bêṯ Yah·weh wə·’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ bêṯ — WLC · 10

- King Solomon gave twenty towns in the land of Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, who had supplied him with cedar… and cypress logs and gold for his every desire.

אָ֡ז הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה יִתֵּן֩ לְחִירָם֙ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים עִ֔יר בְּאֶ֖רֶץ הַגָּלִֽיל׃ חִירָ֣ם מֶֽלֶךְ־ צֹ֠ר נִשָּׂ֨א אֶת־ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה אֲרָזִ֨ים וּבַעֲצֵ֧י בְרוֹשִׁ֛ים בַּעֲצֵי֩ וּבַזָּהָ֖ב לְכָל־ חֶפְצ֑וֹ ’āz ham·me·leḵ šə·lō·mōh yit·tên lə·ḥî·rām ‘eś·rîm ‘îr bə·’e·reṣ hag·gā·lîl ḥî·rām me·leḵ- ṣōr niś·śā ’eṯ- šə·lō·mōh ’ă·rā·zîm ū·ḇa·‘ă·ṣê ḇə·rō·wō·šîm ba·‘ă·ṣê ū·ḇaz·zā·hāḇ lə·ḵāl ḥep̄·ṣōw — WLC · 11

So Hiram went out from Tyre to inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them.

חִירָם֙ וַיֵּצֵ֤א מִצֹּ֔ר לִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־ הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה נָתַן־ ל֖וֹ וְלֹ֥א יָשְׁר֖וּ בְּעֵינָֽיו׃ ḥî·rām way·yê·ṣê miṣ·ṣōr lir·’ō·wṯ ’eṯ- he·‘ā·rîm ’ă·šer šə·lō·mōh nā·ṯan- lōw wə·lō yā·šə·rū bə·‘ê·nāw — WLC · 12

“What are these towns you have given me, my brother?” asked [Hiram], and he called them the Land of Cabul, as they are [called] to this day.

מָ֚ה הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־ הֶעָרִ֣ים נָתַ֥תָּה לִּ֖י אָחִ֑י וַיֹּ֕אמֶר וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶם֙ אֶ֣רֶץ כָּב֔וּל עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃פ הַיּ֥וֹם māh hā·’êl·leh ’ă·šer- he·‘ā·rîm nā·ṯat·tāh lî ’ā·ḥî way·yō·mer way·yiq·rā lā·hem ’e·reṣ kā·ḇūl ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 13

And Hiram had sent the king 120… talents of gold.

This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon imposed to build the house of the LORD, his own palace, the supporting terraces, and the wall of Jerusalem, as well as Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire, killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.

As for all the people who remained of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites (the people who were not Israelites…) —

their descendants who remained in the land -, those whom the Israelites… were unable… to devote to destruction Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.

But Solomon did not consign vvv any of the Israelites to slavery, because they [were] his men of war, his servants, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry.

As soon as Pharaoh’s daughter had come up from the City of David to the palace that [Solomon] had built for her, he built the supporting terraces.

Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense with them before the LORD. So he completed the temple.

King Solomon also assembled a fleet of ships vvv at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth [in] Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.

They sailed to Ophir and imported gold from there— 420… talents and delivered it to… Solomon.
