Chapter 16
Jehu’s Prophecy against Baasha
1
Then the word of the LORD came to Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha, saying:
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ וַיְהִ֤י אֶל־ יֵה֣וּא בֶן־ חֲנָ֔נִי עַל־ בַּעְשָׁ֖א לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yê·hū ḇen- ḥă·nā·nî ‘al- ba‘·šā lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Even though I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to provoke Me to anger by their sins.
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤊 𐤍𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤌
יַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֲרִימֹתִ֙יךָ֙ מִן־ הֶ֣עָפָ֔ר וָאֶתֶּנְךָ֣ נָגִ֔יד עַ֖ל עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ׀ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ יָרָבְעָ֗ם עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽתַּחֲטִא֙ אֶת־ לְהַכְעִיסֵ֖נִי בְּחַטֹּאתָֽם׃ ya·‘an ’ă·šer hă·rî·mō·ṯî·ḵā min- he·‘ā·p̄ār wā·’et·ten·ḵā nā·ḡîḏ ‘al ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl wat·tê·leḵ bə·ḏe·reḵ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl wat·ta·ḥă·ṭi ’eṯ- lə·haḵ·‘î·sê·nî bə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯām — WLC · 2

So now I will consume Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat:
𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤁𐤈
הִנְנִ֥י מַבְעִ֛יר אַחֲרֵ֥י בַעְשָׁ֖א וְאַחֲרֵ֣י בֵית֑וֹ וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ אֶת־ בֵּ֣יתְךָ֔ כְּבֵ֖ית יָרָבְעָ֥ם בֶּן־ נְבָֽט׃ hin·nî maḇ·‘îr ’a·ḥă·rê ḇa‘·šā wə·’a·ḥă·rê ḇê·ṯōw wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- bê·ṯə·ḵā kə·ḇêṯ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ben- nə·ḇāṭ — WLC · 3

Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.”
𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌
לְבַעְשָׁא֙ הַמֵּ֤ת בָּעִ֔יר יֹֽאכְל֖וּ הַכְּלָבִ֑ים וְהַמֵּ֥ת לוֹ֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה יֹאכְל֖וּ ע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ lə·ḇa‘·šā ham·mêṯ bā·‘îr yō·ḵə·lū hak·kə·lā·ḇîm wə·ham·mêṯ lōw baś·śā·ḏeh yō·ḵə·lū ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·mā·yim — WLC · 4

As for the rest of the acts of Baasha, along with his accomplishments… and might, [are] they not written in the Book of the Chronicles… of the Kings of Israel?
𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤕𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וְיֶ֨תֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י בַעְשָׁ֛א וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה וּגְבֽוּרָת֑וֹ הֵ֣ם הֲלֹא־ כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־ סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·ye·ṯer diḇ·rê ḇa‘·šā wa·’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh ū·ḡə·ḇū·rā·ṯōw hêm hă·lō- kə·ṯū·ḇîm ‘al- sê·p̄er diḇ·rê hay·yā·mîm lə·mal·ḵê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 5

And Baasha rested with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah, and his son Elah reigned in his place.
𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤁 𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅
בַּעְשָׁא֙ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּתִרְצָ֑ה בְנ֖וֹ אֵלָ֥ה וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ ba‘·šā way·yiš·kaḇ ‘im- ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw way·yiq·qā·ḇêr bə·ṯir·ṣāh ḇə·nōw ’ê·lāh way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāw — WLC · 6

Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha [and] his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of Jeroboam, and also because Baasha had struck down [the house of Jeroboam].
𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤎𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤐
וְגַ֡ם דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֡ה הָיָה֩ בְּיַד־ הַנָּבִ֗יא יֵה֨וּא בֶן־ חֲנָ֜נִי אֶל־ בַּעְשָׁ֨א וְאֶל־ בֵּית֜וֹ וְעַ֥ל כָּל־ הָרָעָ֣ה׀ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֣ה׀ בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה לְהַכְעִיסוֹ֙ בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָדָ֔יו לִהְי֖וֹת כְּבֵ֣ית יָרָבְעָ֑ם וְעַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ הִכָּ֖ה אֹתֽוֹ׃פ wə·ḡam də·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh bə·yaḏ- han·nā·ḇî yê·hū ḇen- ḥă·nā·nî ’el- ba‘·šā wə·’el- bê·ṯōw wə·‘al kāl- hā·rā·‘āh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh lə·haḵ·‘î·sōw bə·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏāw lih·yō·wṯ kə·ḇêṯ yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām wə·‘al ’ă·šer- hik·kāh ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 7
Elah Reigns in Israel

In the twenty-sixth… year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel, and he reigned in Tirzah two years.
𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤌
עֶשְׂרִ֤ים וָשֵׁשׁ֙ בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שָׁנָ֔ה לְאָסָ֖א מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה אֵלָ֨ה בֶן־ בַּעְשָׁ֧א מָ֠לַךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּתִרְצָ֖ה שְׁנָתָֽיִם׃ ‘eś·rîm wā·šêš biš·naṯ šā·nāh lə·’ā·sā me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh ’ê·lāh ḇen- ba‘·šā mā·laḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl bə·ṯir·ṣāh šə·nā·ṯā·yim — WLC · 8

However, while Elah was in Tirzah getting drunk… in the house of Arza the steward of [his] household [there], [Elah’s] servant Zimri, the commander of half his chariots, conspired against him.
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤑𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅
וְה֤וּא בְתִרְצָה֙ שֹׁתֶ֣ה שִׁכּ֔וֹר בֵּ֣ית אַרְצָ֔א אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־ הַבַּ֖יִת בְּתִרְצָֽה׃ עַבְדּ֣וֹ זִמְרִ֔י שַׂ֖ר מַחֲצִ֣ית הָרָ֑כֶב וַיִּקְשֹׁ֤ר עָלָיו֙ wə·hū ḇə·ṯir·ṣāh šō·ṯeh šik·kō·wr bêṯ ’ar·ṣā ’ă·šer ‘al- hab·ba·yiṯ bə·ṯir·ṣāh ‘aḇ·dōw zim·rî śar ma·ḥă·ṣîṯ hā·rā·ḵeḇ way·yiq·šōr ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 9

So in the twenty-seventh… year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri went in, struck Elah down, and killed him. And Zimri reigned in his place.
𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤅
עֶשְׂרִ֣ים וָשֶׁ֔בַע בִּשְׁנַת֙ לְאָסָ֖א מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה זִמְרִי֙ וַיָּבֹ֤א וַיַּכֵּ֣הוּ וַיְמִיתֵ֔הוּ וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ ‘eś·rîm wā·še·ḇa‘ biš·naṯ lə·’ā·sā me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh zim·rî way·yā·ḇō way·yak·kê·hū way·mî·ṯê·hū way·yim·lōḵ taḥ·tāw — WLC · 10

As soon as [Zimri] began to reign and was seated on the throne, he struck down the entire household of Baasha. He did not leave a single male…, whether a kinsman or friend.
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤊𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤎𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤀𐤉𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤂𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅
וַיְהִ֨י בְמָלְכ֜וֹ כְּשִׁבְתּ֣וֹ עַל־ כִּסְא֗וֹ הִכָּה֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ בֵּ֣ית בַּעְשָׁ֔א לֹֽא־ הִשְׁאִ֥יר ל֖וֹ מַשְׁתִּ֣ין בְּקִ֑יר וְגֹאֲלָ֖יו וְרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ way·hî ḇə·mā·lə·ḵōw kə·šiḇ·tōw ‘al- kis·’ōw hik·kāh ’eṯ- kāl- bêṯ ba‘·šā lō- hiš·’îr lōw maš·tîn bə·qîr wə·ḡō·’ă·lāw wə·rê·‘ê·hū — WLC · 11

So Zimri destroyed the entire household of Baasha, according to the word that the LORD had spoken against Baasha through Jehu the prophet.

זִמְרִ֔י אֵ֖ת וַיַּשְׁמֵ֣ד כָּל־ בֵּ֣ית בַּעְשָׁ֑א כִּדְבַ֤ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָה֙ דִּבֶּ֣ר אֶל־ בַּעְשָׁ֔א בְּיַ֖ד יֵה֥וּא הַנָּבִֽיא׃ zim·rî ’êṯ way·yaš·mêḏ kāl- bêṯ ba‘·šā kiḏ·ḇar ’ă·šer Yah·weh dib·ber ’el- ba‘·šā bə·yaḏ yê·hū han·nā·ḇî — WLC · 12

This happened because of all the sins Baasha [and] his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, {to anger} with their worthless idols.

אֶ֚ל כָּל־ חַטֹּ֣אות בַּעְשָׁ֔א וְחַטֹּ֖אות בְנ֑וֹ אֵלָ֣ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטְא֗וּ וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֶחֱטִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶת־ לְהַכְעִ֗יס אֶת־ יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּהַבְלֵיהֶֽם׃ ’el kāl- ḥaṭ·ṭō·wṯ ba‘·šā wə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·wṯ ḇə·nōw ’ê·lāh ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭə·’ū wa·’ă·šer yiś·rā·’êl he·ḥĕ·ṭî·’ū ’eṯ- lə·haḵ·‘îs ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl bə·haḇ·lê·hem — WLC · 13

Zimri Reigns in Israel

In the twenty-seventh… year of Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri reigned in Tirzah for seven days. Now the troops were encamped against Gibbethon of the Philistines,
𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤕𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌
עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וָשֶׁ֜בַע שָׁנָ֗ה בִּשְׁנַת֩ לְאָסָא֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה זִמְרִ֛י מָלַ֥ךְ בְּתִרְצָ֑ה שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וְהָעָ֣ם חֹנִ֔ים עַֽל־ גִּבְּת֖וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר לַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ ‘eś·rîm wā·še·ḇa‘ šā·nāh biš·naṯ lə·’ā·sā me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh zim·rî mā·laḵ bə·ṯir·ṣāh šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wə·hā·‘ām ḥō·nîm ‘al- gib·bə·ṯō·wn ’ă·šer lap·pə·liš·tîm — WLC · 15

and the people in the camp… heard that Zimri had conspired against the king and struck him down. So there in the camp that very day, all Israel {proclaimed} Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel.

But the followers - of Omri proved stronger than those - of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king.

And Omri rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his son Ahab reigned in his place.

First, [Ahab] set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he had built in Samaria.

Then [he] set up an Asherah pole. Thus Ahab did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, {to anger} than all the kings of Israel - before him.

In [Ahab’s] days, Hiel vvv the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho. At the cost of Abiram his firstborn he laid its foundation, and at the cost of Segub his youngest he set up its gates, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Joshua son of Nun.
