Chapter 13

Jeroboam’s Hand Withers

Suddenly, as Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God from Judah to vvv Bethel by the word of the LORD.

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤋𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ וְיָרָבְעָ֛ם עֹמֵ֥ד עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ לְהַקְטִֽיר׃ בָּ֧א אִ֣ישׁ אֱלֹהִ֗ים מִיהוּדָ֛ה אֶל־ בֵּֽית־ אֵ֑ל בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה wə·hin·nêh wə·yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ‘ō·mêḏ ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ lə·haq·ṭîr bā ’îš ’ĕ·lō·hîm mî·hū·ḏāh ’el- bêṯ- ’êl biḏ·ḇar Yah·wehWLC · 1

And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says:… ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”

וַיִּקְרָ֤א עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ מִזְבֵּ֣חַ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ כֹּ֖ה יְהוָ֑ה אָמַ֣ר הִנֵּֽה־ בֵ֞ן שְׁמ֔וֹ יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ נוֹלָ֤ד לְבֵית־ דָּוִד֙ עָלֶ֗יךָ אֶת־ וְזָבַ֣ח כֹּהֲנֵ֤י הַבָּמוֹת֙ הַמַּקְטִרִ֣ים עָלֶ֔יךָ אָדָ֖ם וְעַצְמ֥וֹת יִשְׂרְפ֥וּ עָלֶֽיךָ׃ way·yiq·rā ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh way·yō·mer miz·bê·aḥ miz·bê·aḥ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nêh- ḇên šə·mōw yō·šî·yā·hū nō·w·lāḏ lə·ḇêṯ- dā·wiḏ ‘ā·le·ḵā ’eṯ- wə·zā·ḇaḥ kō·hă·nê hab·bā·mō·wṯ ham·maq·ṭi·rîm ‘ā·le·ḵā ’ā·ḏām wə·‘aṣ·mō·wṯ yiś·rə·p̄ū ‘ā·le·ḵāWLC · 2

That day [the man of God] gave a sign, saying, “The LORD has spoken this sign -: ‘Surely the altar will be split apart, and the ashes upon it will be poured out.’”

𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤃𐤔𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤐𐤊

הַה֤וּא בַּיּ֨וֹם וְנָתַן֩ מוֹפֵת֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהוָ֑ה דִּבֶּ֣ר זֶ֣ה הַמּוֹפֵ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִנֵּ֤ה הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ נִקְרָ֔ע הַדֶּ֥שֶׁן אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָֽיו׃ וְנִשְׁפַּ֖ךְ ha·hū bay·yō·wm wə·nā·ṯan mō·w·p̄êṯ lê·mōr Yah·weh dib·ber zeh ham·mō·w·p̄êṯ ’ă·šer hin·nêh ham·miz·bê·aḥ niq·rā‘ had·de·šen ’ă·šer- ‘ā·lāw wə·niš·paḵWLC · 3

Now when King Jeroboam -, who was at the altar in Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had cried out against [it], he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him withered, so that he could not pull it back…

וַיְהִי֩ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־ יָרָבְעָ֧ם אֶת־ מֵעַ֥ל הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ בְּבֵֽית־ אֵ֔ל כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ דְּבַ֣ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים קָרָ֤א עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יָד֛וֹ לֵאמֹ֣ר׀ תִּפְשֻׂ֑הוּ יָדוֹ֙ שָׁלַ֣ח אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָלָ֔יו וַתִּיבַ֤שׁ יָכֹ֖ל וְלֹ֥א לַהֲשִׁיבָ֥הּ אֵלָֽיו׃ way·hî ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām ’eṯ- mê·‘al ham·miz·bê·aḥ bə·ḇêṯ- ’êl ḵiš·mō·a‘ də·ḇar ’ă·šer ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm qā·rā ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw lê·mōr tip̄·śu·hū yā·ḏōw šā·laḥ ’ă·šer ‘ā·lāw wat·tî·ḇaš yā·ḵōl wə·lō la·hă·šî·ḇāh ’ê·lāwWLC · 4

And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out -, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤃𐤔𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וְהַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ נִקְרָ֔ע הַדֶּ֖שֶׁן וַיִּשָּׁפֵ֥ךְ מִן־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כַּמּוֹפֵ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים נָתַ֛ן בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ wə·ham·miz·bê·aḥ niq·rā‘ had·de·šen way·yiš·šā·p̄êḵ min- ham·miz·bê·aḥ kam·mō·w·p̄êṯ ’ă·šer ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm nā·ṯan biḏ·ḇar Yah·wehWLC · 5

Then the king… responded to the man of God, “Intercede… with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored -.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as [it was] before.

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤋 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤄

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ וַיַּ֨עַן אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים חַל־ נָ֞א אֶת־ פְּנֵ֨י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ וְהִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל בַּעֲדִ֔י יָדִ֖י וְתָשֹׁ֥ב אֵלָ֑י אִישׁ־ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־ וַיְחַ֤ל פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ יַד־ וַתָּ֤שָׁב אֵלָ֔יו וַתְּהִ֖י כְּבָרִֽאשֹׁנָֽה׃ ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer way·ya·‘an ’el- ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ḥal- nā ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā wə·hiṯ·pal·lêl ba·‘ă·ḏî yā·ḏî wə·ṯā·šōḇ ’ê·lāy ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·ḥal pə·nê Yah·weh ham·me·leḵ yaḏ- wat·tā·šāḇ ’ê·lāw wat·tə·hî kə·ḇā·ri·šō·nāhWLC · 6

Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤎𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤕𐤕

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בֹּאָה־ הַבַּ֖יְתָה אִתִּ֥י וּֽסְעָ֑דָה וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה לְךָ֖ מַתָּֽת׃ ham·me·leḵ way·ḏab·bêr ’el- ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm bō·’āh- hab·bay·ṯāh ’it·tî ū·sə·‘ā·ḏāh wə·’et·tə·nāh lə·ḵā mat·tāṯWLC · 7

But the man of God… replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread… or drink water in this place.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤑𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌

אִישׁ־ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אִם־ תִּתֶּן־ לִי֙ אֶת־ חֲצִ֣י בֵיתֶ֔ךָ לֹ֥א אָבֹ֖א עִמָּ֑ךְ וְלֹֽא־ אֹ֤כַל לֶ֙חֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶשְׁתֶּה־ מַּ֔יִם הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּמָּק֖וֹם ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’el- ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’im- tit·ten- lî ’eṯ- ḥă·ṣî ḇê·ṯe·ḵā lō ’ā·ḇō ‘im·māḵ wə·lō- ’ō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·lō ’eš·teh- ma·yim haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wmWLC · 8

For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD…: ‘You must not eat bread… or drink water… or return by the way you came.’”

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤍 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕

כִּֽי־ כֵ֣ן׀ צִוָּ֣ה אֹתִ֗י בִּדְבַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹא־ תֹ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְלֹ֣א תִשְׁתֶּה־ מָּ֑יִם וְלֹ֣א תָשׁ֔וּב בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽכְתָּ׃ kî- ḵên ṣiw·wāh ’ō·ṯî biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh lê·mōr lō- ṯō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·lō ṯiš·teh- mā·yim wə·lō ṯā·šūḇ bad·de·reḵ ’ă·šer hā·lā·ḵə·tāWLC · 9

So [the man of God] went another way and did not return by the way he had come to vvv Bethel.

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֵ֑ר בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ וְלֹֽא־ שָׁ֣ב בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֛ר בָּ֥א בָ֖הּ אֶל־ בֵּֽית־ אֵֽל׃פ way·yê·leḵ ’a·ḥêr bə·ḏe·reḵ wə·lō- šāḇ bad·de·reḵ ’ă·šer bā ḇāh ’el- bêṯ- ’êlWLC · 10

The Old Prophet and the Man of God

Now a certain old prophet was living vvv in Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day vvv in Bethel. They also told their father the words that [the man] had spoken to the king.

𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊

אֶחָד֙ זָקֵ֔ן וְנָבִ֤יא יֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּבֵֽית־ אֵ֑ל בְנ֡וֹ וַיָּב֣וֹא וַיְסַפֶּר־ ל֣וֹ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־ אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ עָשָׂה֩ הַיּ֜וֹם בְּבֵֽית־ אֵ֗ל אֶת־ וַֽיְסַפְּר֖וּם לַאֲבִיהֶֽם׃ הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ ’e·ḥāḏ zā·qên wə·nā·ḇî yō·šêḇ bə·ḇêṯ- ’êl ḇə·nōw way·yā·ḇō·w way·sap·per- lōw ’eṯ- kāl- ham·ma·‘ă·śeh ’ă·šer- ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ā·śāh hay·yō·wm bə·ḇêṯ- ’êl ’eṯ- way·sap·pə·rūm la·’ă·ḇî·hem had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer dib·ber ’el- ham·me·leḵWLC · 11

“Which… way did he go?” their father asked -. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.

𐤀𐤉 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄

אֵֽי־ זֶ֥ה הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ הָלָ֑ךְ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֲלֵהֶם֙ בָנָ֗יו אֶת־ וַיִּרְא֣וּ הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָלַךְ֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֖א מִיהוּדָֽה׃ ’ê- zeh had·de·reḵ hā·lāḵ ’ă·ḇî·hem way·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·hem ḇā·nāw ’eṯ- way·yir·’ū had·de·reḵ ’ă·šer hā·laḵ ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer- bā mî·hū·ḏāhWLC · 12

So [the prophet] said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” Then they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ בָּנָ֔יו חִבְשׁוּ־ הַחֲמ֑וֹר לִ֖י וַיַּחְבְּשׁוּ־ הַחֲמ֔וֹר ל֣וֹ וַיִּרְכַּ֖ב עָלָֽיו׃ way·yō·mer ’el- bā·nāw ḥiḇ·šū- ha·ḥă·mō·wr lî way·yaḥ·bə·šū- ha·ḥă·mō·wr lōw way·yir·kaḇ ‘ā·lāwWLC · 13

and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked…, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I [am],” he replied.

וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּ֨מְצָאֵ֔הוּ יֹשֵׁ֖ב תַּ֣חַת הָאֵלָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו הַאַתָּ֧ה אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֥אתָ מִֽיהוּדָ֖ה אָֽנִי׃ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר way·yê·leḵ ’a·ḥă·rê ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yim·ṣā·’ê·hū yō·šêḇ ta·ḥaṯ hā·’ê·lāh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ha·’at·tāh ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer- bā·ṯā mî·hū·ḏāh ’ā·nî way·yō·merWLC · 14

So [the prophet] said to [the man of God], “Come home with me and eat some bread.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו לֵ֥ךְ הַבָּ֑יְתָה אִתִּ֖י וֶאֱכֹ֖ל לָֽחֶם׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw lêḵ hab·bā·yə·ṯāh ’it·tî we·’ĕ·ḵōl lā·ḥemWLC · 15

16

But [the man] replied, “I cannot… go home… with you, and I will not eat bread… or drink water with you in this place.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֥א אוּכַ֛ל לָשׁ֥וּב אִתָּ֖ךְ וְלָב֣וֹא אִתָּ֑ךְ וְלֹֽא־ אֹ֣כַל לֶ֗חֶם וְלֹֽא־ אֶשְׁתֶּ֤ה מַ֔יִם אִתְּךָ֙ הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּמָּק֖וֹם way·yō·mer lō ’ū·ḵal lā·šūḇ ’it·tāḵ wə·lā·ḇō·w ’it·tāḵ wə·lō- ’ō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·lō- ’eš·teh ma·yim ’it·tə·ḵā haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wmWLC · 16

For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread… or drink water… there or return… by the way you came.’”

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕

כִּֽי־ אֵלַי֙ דָבָ֤ר בִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה לֹֽא־ תֹאכַ֣ל לֶ֔חֶם וְלֹֽא־ תִשְׁתֶּ֥ה מָ֑יִם לֹא־ שָׁ֖ם תָשׁ֣וּב הָלַ֥כְתָּ בָּֽהּ׃ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־ לָלֶ֔כֶת kî- ’ê·lay ḏā·ḇār biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh lō- ṯō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·lō- ṯiš·teh mā·yim lō- šām ṯā·šūḇ hā·laḵ·tā bāh bad·de·reḵ ’ă·šer- lā·le·ḵeṯWLC · 17

Then [the prophet] replied…, “I too [am] a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤇𐤔 𐤋𐤅

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ אֲנִ֣י גַּם־ נָבִיא֮ כָּמוֹךָ֒ וּמַלְאָ֡ךְ דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלַי֩ בִּדְבַ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲשִׁבֵ֤הוּ אִתְּךָ֙ אֶל־ בֵּיתֶ֔ךָ וְיֹ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְיֵ֣שְׁתְּ מָ֑יִם כִּחֵ֖שׁ לֽוֹ׃ way·yō·mer lōw ’ă·nî gam- nā·ḇî kā·mō·w·ḵā ū·mal·’āḵ dib·ber ’ê·lay biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh lê·mōr hă·ši·ḇê·hū ’it·tə·ḵā ’el- bê·ṯe·ḵā wə·yō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·yê·šət mā·yim ki·ḥêš lōwWLC · 18

but the man of God went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.

וַיָּ֣שָׁב אִתּ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֛חֶם בְּבֵית֖וֹ וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מָֽיִם׃ way·yā·šāḇ ’it·tōw way·yō·ḵal le·ḥem bə·ḇê·ṯōw way·yê·šət mā·yimWLC · 19

While they were sitting at the table,… the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,

𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍 𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤅

הֵ֥ם יֹשְׁבִ֖ים אֶל־ הַשֻּׁלְחָ֑ן פ וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַיְהִ֕י אֶל־ הַנָּבִ֖יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֱשִׁיבֽוֹ׃ hêm yō·šə·ḇîm ’el- haš·šul·ḥå̄n p̄ way·hî də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer hĕ·šî·ḇōwWLC · 20

and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what… the LORD says: ‘Because… you have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤐𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤅𐤊

וַיִּקְרָ֞א אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֤א מִֽיהוּדָה֙ כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה לֵאמֹ֔ר יַ֗עַן כִּ֤י מָרִ֙יתָ֙ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹ֤א שָׁמַ֙רְתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ צִוְּךָ֖ way·yiq·rā ’el- ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer- bā mî·hū·ḏāh kōh ’ā·mar Yah·weh lê·mōr ya·‘an kî mā·rî·ṯā pî Yah·weh wə·lō šā·mar·tā ’eṯ- ham·miṣ·wāh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ṣiw·wə·ḵāWLC · 21

but you went back and ate bread and drank water in the place where He told you not to do so…, your body shall never reach… the tomb of your fathers.’”

𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊

וַתָּ֗שָׁב וַתֹּ֤אכַל לֶ֙חֶם֙ וַתֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מַ֔יִם בַּמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־ תֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם וְאַל־ תֵּ֣שְׁתְּ מָ֑יִם נִבְלָתְךָ֖ לֹֽא־ תָב֥וֹא אֶל־ קֶ֥בֶר אֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ wat·tā·šāḇ wat·tō·ḵal le·ḥem wat·tê·šət ma·yim bam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer dib·ber ’ê·le·ḵā ’al- tō·ḵal le·ḥem wə·’al- tê·šət mā·yim niḇ·lā·ṯə·ḵā lō- ṯā·ḇō·w ’el- qe·ḇer ’ă·ḇō·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 22

And after [the man of God] had finished eating and drinking, the old prophet who had brought him back saddled the donkey for him.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤔 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤅

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְל֥וֹ לֶ֖חֶם וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שְׁתוֹת֑וֹ לַנָּבִ֖יא אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֱשִׁיבֽוֹ׃ וַיַּחֲבָשׁ־ הַחֲמ֔וֹר ל֣וֹ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê ’ā·ḵə·lōw le·ḥem wə·’a·ḥă·rê šə·ṯō·w·ṯōw lan·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer hĕ·šî·ḇōw way·ya·ḥă·ḇāš- ha·ḥă·mō·wr lōwWLC · 23

As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying in the road, with the donkey - and the lion standing beside [it].

𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄

וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ אַרְיֵ֛ה וַיִּמְצָאֵ֧הוּ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ נִבְלָתוֹ֙ וַתְּהִ֤י מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְהַחֲמוֹר֙ עֹמֵ֣ד אֶצְלָ֔הּ וְהָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמֵ֖ד אֵ֥צֶל הַנְּבֵלָֽה׃ way·yê·leḵ ’ar·yêh way·yim·ṣā·’ê·hū bad·de·reḵ way·mî·ṯê·hū niḇ·lā·ṯōw wat·tə·hî muš·le·ḵeṯ bad·de·reḵ wə·ha·ḥă·mō·wr ‘ō·mêḏ ’eṣ·lāh wə·hā·’ar·yêh ‘ō·mêḏ ’ê·ṣel han·nə·ḇê·lāhWLC · 24

And there were men passing by who saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported this in the city where the old prophet lived

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤄

וְהִנֵּ֧ה אֲנָשִׁ֣ים עֹבְרִ֗ים וַיִּרְא֤וּ אֶת־ הַנְּבֵלָה֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְאֶת־ הָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמֵ֖ד אֵ֣צֶל הַנְּבֵלָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ בָעִ֔יר אֲשֶׁ֛ר הַזָּקֵ֖ן הַנָּבִ֥יא יֹשֵׁ֥ב בָּֽהּ׃ wə·hin·nêh ’ă·nā·šîm ‘ō·ḇə·rîm way·yir·’ū ’eṯ- han·nə·ḇê·lāh muš·le·ḵeṯ bad·de·reḵ wə·’eṯ- hā·’ar·yêh ‘ō·mêḏ ’ê·ṣel han·nə·ḇê·lāh way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·ḏab·bə·rū ḇā·‘îr ’ă·šer haz·zā·qên han·nā·ḇî yō·šêḇ bāhWLC · 25

When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It [is] the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion, and it has mauled him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to him.”

𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤅

הַנָּבִיא֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֱשִׁיב֣וֹ מִן־ הַדֶּרֶךְ֒ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ ה֔וּא אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָרָ֖ה אֶת־ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָ֜ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֨הוּ לָאַרְיֵ֗ה וַֽיִּשְׁבְּרֵ֙הוּ֙ וַיְמִתֵ֔הוּ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּר־ לֽוֹ׃ han·nā·ḇî ’ă·šer hĕ·šî·ḇōw min- had·de·reḵ way·yiš·ma‘ way·yō·mer hū ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer mā·rāh ’eṯ- pî Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yit·tə·nê·hū lā·’ar·yêh way·yiš·bə·rê·hū way·mi·ṯê·hū kiḏ·ḇar Yah·weh ’ă·šer dib·ber- lōwWLC · 26

Then the old prophet instructed… his sons,… “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled [it],

𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤅

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־ בָּנָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר חִבְשׁוּ־ אֶֽת־ הַחֲמ֑וֹר לִ֖י וַֽיַּחֲבֹֽשׁוּ׃ way·ḏab·bêr ’el- bā·nāw lê·mōr ḥiḇ·šū- ’eṯ- ha·ḥă·mō·wr lî way·ya·ḥă·ḇō·šūWLC · 27

and he went and found the body lying in the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside [it]. The lion had not eaten the body… or mauled the donkey.

𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤓

וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיִּמְצָ֤א אֶת־ נִבְלָתוֹ֙ מֻשְׁלֶ֣כֶת בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וַֽחֲמוֹר֙ וְהָ֣אַרְיֵ֔ה עֹמְדִ֖ים אֵ֣צֶל הַנְּבֵלָ֑ה הָֽאַרְיֵה֙ אֶת־ לֹֽא־ אָכַ֤ל הַנְּבֵלָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁבַ֖ר אֶֽת־ הַחֲמֽוֹר׃ way·yê·leḵ way·yim·ṣā ’eṯ- niḇ·lā·ṯōw muš·le·ḵeṯ bad·de·reḵ wa·ḥă·mō·wr wə·hā·’ar·yêh ‘ō·mə·ḏîm ’ê·ṣel han·nə·ḇê·lāh hā·’ar·yêh ’eṯ- lō- ’ā·ḵal han·nə·ḇê·lāh wə·lō šā·ḇar ’eṯ- ha·ḥă·mō·wrWLC · 28

So the old prophet lifted up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own - city to mourn for him and bury him.

הַנָּבִ֜יא אֶת־ וַיִּשָּׂ֨א נִבְלַ֧ת אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים וַיַּנִּחֵ֥הוּ אֶֽל־ הַחֲמ֖וֹר וַיְשִׁיבֵ֑הוּ הַזָּקֵ֔ן הַנָּבִ֣יא וַיָּבֹ֗א אֶל־ עִיר֙ לִסְפֹּ֖ד וּלְקָבְרֽוֹ׃ han·nā·ḇî ’eṯ- way·yiś·śā niḇ·laṯ ’îš- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yan·ni·ḥê·hū ’el- ha·ḥă·mō·wr way·šî·ḇê·hū haz·zā·qên han·nā·ḇî way·yā·ḇō ’el- ‘îr lis·pōḏ ū·lə·qā·ḇə·rōwWLC · 29

Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they lamented over him, “Oh, my brother!”

  • After he had buried him, [the prophet] said to his sons,… “When I die, you must bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried Lay my bones beside his bones,

וַיְהִי֮ אַחֲרֵ֣י קָבְר֣וֹ אֹתוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ בָּנָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בְּמוֹתִי֙ וּקְבַרְתֶּ֣ם אֹתִ֔י בַּקֶּ֕בֶר אֲשֶׁ֛ר אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים קָב֣וּר בּ֑וֹ הַנִּ֖יחוּ עַצְמֹתָ֔יו אֶת־ אֵ֚צֶל עַצְמֹתָֽי׃ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê qā·ḇə·rōw ’ō·ṯōw way·yō·mer ’el- bā·nāw lê·mōr bə·mō·w·ṯî ū·qə·ḇar·tem ’ō·ṯî baq·qe·ḇer ’ă·šer ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm qā·ḇūr bōw han·nî·ḥū ‘aṣ·mō·ṯāw ’eṯ- ’ê·ṣel ‘aṣ·mō·ṯāyWLC · 31

for the message that he cried out by the word of the LORD against the altar vvv in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely come to pass…”

כִּי֩ הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר קָרָא֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּבֵֽית־ אֵ֑ל וְעַל֙ כָּל־ בָּתֵּ֣י הַבָּמ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעָרֵ֥י שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃פ הָיֹ֨ה יִהְיֶ֜ה kî had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer qā·rā biḏ·ḇar Yah·weh ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ ’ă·šer bə·ḇêṯ- ’êl wə·‘al kāl- bāt·tê hab·bā·mō·wṯ ’ă·šer bə·‘ā·rê šō·mə·rō·wn hā·yōh yih·yehWLC · 32

Even after these events, Jeroboam did not repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed priests for the high places from every class of people. He ordained - anyone who desired to be a priest of the high places.

𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕

אַחַר֙ הַזֶּ֔ה הַדָּבָ֣ר יָרָבְעָ֖ם לֹֽא־ שָׁ֥ב הָרָעָ֑ה מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ וַ֠יָּשָׁב וַיַּ֜עַשׂ כֹּהֲנֵ֣י בָמ֔וֹת מִקְצ֤וֹת הָעָם֙ יְמַלֵּ֣א אֶת־ יָד֔וֹ הֶֽחָפֵץ֙ וִיהִ֖י כֹּהֲנֵ֥י בָמֽוֹת׃ ’a·ḥar haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām lō- šāḇ hā·rā·‘āh mid·dar·kōw way·yā·šāḇ way·ya·‘aś kō·hă·nê ḇā·mō·wṯ miq·ṣō·wṯ hā·‘ām yə·mal·lê ’eṯ- yā·ḏōw he·ḥā·p̄êṣ wî·hî kō·hă·nê ḇā·mō·wṯWLC · 33

And this was… the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.
