The Queen of Sheba

Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with difficult questions.

וּמַֽלְכַּת־ שְׁבָ֗א שֹׁמַ֛עַת אֶת־ שֵׁ֥מַע שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה וַתָּבֹ֥א לְנַסֹּת֖וֹ בְּחִידֽוֹת׃ ū·mal·kaṯ- šə·ḇā šō·ma·‘aṯ ’eṯ- šê·ma‘ šə·lō·mōh lə·šêm Yah·weh wat·tā·ḇō lə·nas·sō·ṯōw bə·ḥî·ḏō·wṯ — WLC · 1

She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large caravan— with camels bearing spices, gold in great abundance, and precious stones. And she came to Solomon and spoke to him all that was on her mind.

וַתָּבֹ֣א יְרוּשָׁלְַ֗מָה מְאֹד֒ כָּבֵ֣ד בְּחַיִל֮ גְּ֠מַלִּים נֹשְׂאִ֨ים בְּשָׂמִ֧ים וְזָהָ֛ב מְאֹ֖ד רַב־ יְקָרָ֑ה וְאֶ֣בֶן וַתָּבֹא֙ אֵלָ֔יו אֵ֛ת שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה וַתְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה עִם־ לְבָבָֽהּ׃ wat·tā·ḇō yə·rū·šā·lə·māh mə·’ōḏ kā·ḇêḏ bə·ḥa·yil gə·mal·lîm nō·śə·’îm bə·śā·mîm wə·zā·hāḇ mə·’ōḏ raḇ- yə·qā·rāh wə·’e·ḇen wat·tā·ḇō ’ê·lāw ’êṯ šə·lō·mōh wat·tə·ḏab·bêr ’el- kāl- ’ă·šer hā·yāh ‘im- lə·ḇā·ḇāh — WLC · 2

And Solomon answered all her questions; nothing… was too difficult for the king - to explain -.

שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה אֶת־ וַיַּגֶּד־ לָ֥הּ כָּל־ דְּבָרֶ֑יהָ לֹֽא־ דָּבָר֙ הָיָ֤ה נֶעְלָ֣ם מִן־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹ֦א הִגִּ֖יד לָֽהּ׃ šə·lō·mōh ’eṯ- way·yag·geḏ- lāh kāl- də·ḇā·re·hā lō- dā·ḇār hā·yāh ne‘·lām min- ham·me·leḵ ’ă·šer lō hig·gîḏ lāh — WLC · 3

When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built,

מַֽלְכַּת־ שְׁבָ֔א אֵ֖ת וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ כָּל־ חָכְמַ֣ת שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וְהַבַּ֖יִת אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנָֽה׃ mal·kaṯ- šə·ḇā ’êṯ wat·tê·re kāl- ḥā·ḵə·maṯ šə·lō·mōh wə·hab·ba·yiṯ ’ă·šer bā·nāh — WLC · 4

the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and attire of his attendants, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away… -.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and wisdom is true.
𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤕
וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי בְּאַרְצִ֑י עַל־ דְּבָרֶ֖יךָ וְעַל־ חָכְמָתֶֽךָ׃ הָיָ֣ה אֱמֶת֙ wat·tō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer šā·ma‘·tî bə·’ar·ṣî ‘al- də·ḇā·re·ḵā wə·‘al- ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯe·ḵā hā·yāh ’ĕ·meṯ — WLC · 6

But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me. Your wisdom and prosperity have far exceeded the report I heard.

וְלֹֽא־ הֶאֱמַ֣נְתִּי לַדְּבָרִ֗ים עַ֤ד אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֙אתִי֙ וַתִּרְאֶ֣ינָה עֵינַ֔י וְהִנֵּ֥ה לֹֽא־ הַחֵ֑צִי הֻגַּד־ לִ֖י חָכְמָה֙ וָט֔וֹב אֶל־ הוֹסַ֤פְתָּ הַשְּׁמוּעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ wə·lō- he·’ĕ·man·tî lad·də·ḇā·rîm ‘aḏ ’ă·šer- bā·ṯî wat·tir·’e·nāh ‘ê·nay wə·hin·nêh lō- ha·ḥê·ṣî hug·gaḏ- lî ḥāḵ·māh wā·ṭō·wḇ ’el- hō·w·sap̄·tā haš·šə·mū·‘āh ’ă·šer šā·mā·‘ə·tî — WLC · 7

How blessed are your men! How blessed are these servants of yours who stand continually before you [and] hear your wisdom!

אַשְׁרֵ֣י אֲנָשֶׁ֔יךָ אַשְׁרֵ֖י אֵ֑לֶּה עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ הָֽעֹמְדִ֤ים תָּמִ֔יד לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ הַשֹּׁמְעִ֖ים אֶת־ חָכְמָתֶֽךָ׃ ’aš·rê ’ă·nā·še·ḵā ’aš·rê ’êl·leh ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā hā·‘ō·mə·ḏîm tā·mîḏ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā haš·šō·mə·‘îm ’eṯ- ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 8

Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you to set you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD’s eternal love for Israel, He has made you king to carry out justice and righteousness.”

בָּר֔וּךְ יְהִ֨י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ חָפֵ֣ץ בְּךָ֔ לְתִתְּךָ֖ עַל־ כִּסֵּ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־ לְעֹלָ֔ם בְּאַהֲבַ֨ת יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיְשִֽׂימְךָ֣ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה׃ bā·rūḵ yə·hî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ă·šer ḥā·p̄êṣ bə·ḵā lə·ṯit·tə·ḵā ‘al- kis·sê yiś·rā·’êl Yah·weh ’eṯ- lə·‘ō·lām bə·’a·hă·ḇaṯ yiś·rā·’êl way·śî·mə·ḵā lə·me·leḵ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh — WLC · 9

Then she gave the king 120… talents of gold, a great quantity of… spices, and precious stones. Never again were spices in such abundance brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

וַתִּתֵּ֨ן לַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מֵאָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֣ים׀ כִּכַּ֣ר זָהָ֗ב הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹ֖ד וּבְשָׂמִ֛ים יְקָרָ֑ה וְאֶ֣בֶן לֹא־ עוֹד֙ כַבֹּ֨שֶׂם הַה֥וּא לָרֹ֔ב בָא֩ אֲשֶׁר־ מַֽלְכַּת־ שְׁבָ֖א נָתְנָ֥ה לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ wat·tit·tên lam·me·leḵ mê·’āh wə·‘eś·rîm kik·kar zā·hāḇ har·bêh mə·’ōḏ ū·ḇə·śā·mîm yə·qā·rāh wə·’e·ḇen lō- ‘ō·wḏ ḵab·bō·śem ha·hū lā·rōḇ ḇā ’ă·šer- mal·kaṯ- šə·ḇā nā·ṯə·nāh lam·me·leḵ šə·lō·mōh — WLC · 10

(The fleet of Hiram that brought gold from Ophir also brought from Ophir a great cargo… of almug wood and precious stones.

אֳנִ֣י חִירָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ נָשָׂ֥א זָהָ֖ב מֵאוֹפִ֑יר וְגַם֙ הֵבִ֨יא מֵאֹפִ֜יר הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹ֖ד אַלְמֻגִּ֛ים עֲצֵ֧י יְקָרָֽה׃ וְאֶ֥בֶן ’o·nî ḥî·rām ’ă·šer- nā·śā zā·hāḇ mê·’ō·w·p̄îr wə·ḡam hê·ḇî mê·’ō·p̄îr har·bêh mə·’ōḏ ’al·mug·gîm ‘ă·ṣê yə·qā·rāh wə·’e·ḇen — WLC · 11

The king made the almug wood into steps for the house of the LORD and for the king’s palace, and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had such almug wood been brought in, nor has such been seen again to this day.)

הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ אֶת־ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָאַלְמֻגִּ֜ים עֲצֵ֨י מִסְעָ֤ד לְבֵית־ יְהוָה֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וּלְבֵ֣ית וְכִנֹּר֥וֹת וּנְבָלִ֖ים לַשָּׁרִ֑ים לֹ֣א כֵ֞ן אַלְמֻגִּים֙ עֲצֵ֤י בָֽא־ וְלֹ֣א נִרְאָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם ham·me·leḵ ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aś hā·’al·mug·gîm ‘ă·ṣê mis·‘āḏ lə·ḇêṯ- Yah·weh ham·me·leḵ ū·lə·ḇêṯ wə·ḵin·nō·rō·wṯ ū·nə·ḇā·lîm laš·šā·rîm lō ḵên ’al·mug·gîm ‘ă·ṣê ḇā- wə·lō nir·’āh ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 12

King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired— whatever she asked— besides what he had given her out of [his] royal bounty. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.

וְהַמֶּ֨לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה נָתַ֣ן לְמַֽלְכַּת־ שְׁבָ֗א אֶת־ כָּל־ חֶפְצָהּ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁאָ֔לָה מִלְּבַד֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָֽתַן־ לָ֔הּ שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ כְּיַ֖ד וַתֵּ֛פֶן וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ לְאַרְצָ֖הּ הִ֥יא וַעֲבָדֶֽיהָ׃ס wə·ham·me·leḵ šə·lō·mōh nā·ṯan lə·mal·kaṯ- šə·ḇā ’eṯ- kāl- ḥep̄·ṣāh ’ă·šer šā·’ā·lāh mil·lə·ḇaḏ ’ă·šer nā·ṯan- lāh šə·lō·mōh ham·me·leḵ kə·yaḏ wat·tê·p̄en wat·tê·leḵ lə·’ar·ṣāh hî wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·hā — WLC · 13
Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor

The weight of gold that came to Solomon each year… was 666… talents -,

not including the revenue from the merchants…, traders, and all the Arabian kings and governors of the land.

לְבַד֙ וּמִסְחַ֖ר מֵאַנְשֵׁ֣י הַתָּרִ֔ים הָרֹכְלִ֑ים וְכָל־ הָעֶ֖רֶב מַלְכֵ֥י וּפַח֥וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ lə·ḇaḏ ū·mis·ḥar mê·’an·šê hat·tā·rîm hā·rō·ḵə·lîm wə·ḵāl hā·‘e·reḇ mal·ḵê ū·p̄a·ḥō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 15

King Solomon made two hundred large shields [of] hammered gold; six hundred [shekels] of gold went into each shield.

All King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver, because it was accounted as nothing… in the days of Solomon.

For the king had the ships of Tarshish at sea with Hiram’s fleet, and once every three years… the ships of Tarshish would arrive bearing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.

The whole world sought an audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom that God had put in his heart.

The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as abundant as sycamore in the foothills.
