Chapter 5

David Anointed King of All Israel

1

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said,… “Here we [are], your own flesh and blood.

𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤊 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤊

כָּל־ שִׁבְטֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ אֶל־ דָּוִ֖ד חֶבְר֑וֹנָה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנְנ֛וּ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ וּֽבְשָׂרְךָ֖ עַצְמְךָ֥ kāl- šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- dā·wiḏ ḥeḇ·rō·w·nāh way·yō·mə·rū lê·mōr hin·nū ’ă·nā·ḥə·nū ū·ḇə·śā·rə·ḵā ‘aṣ·mə·ḵāWLC · 1

Even… in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out… and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over [them].’”

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, [where] King David made with them a covenant before the LORD. And they anointed [him] king over Israel.

David was thirty years old… when he became king, [and] he reigned forty years.

דָּוִ֖ד שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֛ה בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ מָלָֽךְ׃ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה dā·wiḏ šə·lō·šîm ben- šā·nāh bə·mā·lə·ḵōw mā·lāḵ ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāhWLC · 4

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three… years over all Israel and Judah.

David Conquers Jerusalem

Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even… the blind and lame… can repel you.” For they thought, “David cannot get in here.”

הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ וַֽאֲנָשָׁיו֙ וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם אֶל־ הַיְבֻסִ֖י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְדָוִ֤ד לֹא־ תָב֣וֹא הֵ֔נָּה כִּ֣י אִם־ הַעִוְרִ֤ים וְהַפִּסְחִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הֱסִֽירְךָ֗ לֵאמֹר֙ דָוִ֖ד לֹֽא־ יָב֥וֹא הֵֽנָּה׃ ham·me·leḵ wa·’ă·nā·šāw way·yê·leḵ yə·rū·šā·lim ’el- hay·ḇu·sî yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ way·yō·mer lə·ḏā·wiḏ lō- ṯā·ḇō·w hên·nāh kî ’im- ha·‘iw·rîm wə·hap·pis·ḥîm lê·mōr hĕ·sî·rə·ḵā lê·mōr ḏā·wiḏ lō- yā·ḇō·w hên·nāhWLC · 6

Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤃𐤕 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤃𐤅𐤃

דָּוִ֔ד אֵ֖ת וַיִּלְכֹּ֣ד מְצֻדַ֣ת צִיּ֑וֹן הִ֖יא עִ֥יר דָּוִֽד׃ dā·wiḏ ’êṯ way·yil·kōḏ mə·ṣu·ḏaṯ ṣî·yō·wn hî ‘îr dā·wiḏWLC · 7

On that… day [he] said, “Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the lame and blind who are despised… by David. That is why… it is said, “The blind and the lame will never enter… the palace.”

הַה֗וּא כָּל־ בַּיּ֣וֹם דָּוִ֜ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מַכֵּ֤ה יְבֻסִי֙ בַּצִּנּ֔וֹר וְאֶת־ וְיִגַּ֣ע הַפִּסְחִים֙ וְאֶת־ הַ֣עִוְרִ֔ים שָׂנְאוּ נֶ֣פֶשׁ דָּוִ֑ד עַל־ כֵּן֙ יֹֽאמְר֔וּ עִוֵּ֣ר וּפִסֵּ֔חַ לֹ֥א יָב֖וֹא אֶל־ הַבָּֽיִת׃ ha·hū kāl- bay·yō·wm dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer mak·kêh yə·ḇu·sî baṣ·ṣin·nō·wr wə·’eṯ- wə·yig·ga‘ hap·pis·ḥîm wə·’eṯ- ha·‘iw·rîm śå̄·nə·ʾū ne·p̄eš dā·wiḏ ‘al- kên yō·mə·rū ‘iw·wêr ū·p̄is·sê·aḥ lō yā·ḇō·w ’el- hab·bā·yiṯWLC · 8

So David took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built it up all the way around, from the supporting terraces inward.

דָּוִד֙ וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב בַּמְּצֻדָ֔ה וַיִּקְרָא־ לָ֖הּ עִ֣יר דָּוִ֑ד דָּוִד֙ וַיִּ֤בֶן סָבִ֔יב מִן־ הַמִּלּ֖וֹא וָבָֽיְתָה׃ dā·wiḏ way·yê·šeḇ bam·mə·ṣu·ḏāh way·yiq·rā- lāh ‘îr dā·wiḏ dā·wiḏ way·yi·ḇen sā·ḇîḇ min- ham·mil·lō·w wā·ḇā·yə·ṯāhWLC · 9

And David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of Hosts was with him.

Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters…, and stonemasons…,… and they built a palace for David.

חִירָ֨ם מֶֽלֶךְ־ צֹ֥ר וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים֮ אֶל־ דָּוִד֒ אֲרָזִ֔ים וַעֲצֵ֣י וְחָרָשֵׁ֣י עֵ֔ץ וְחָֽרָשֵׁ֖י אֶ֣בֶן קִ֑יר וַיִּבְנֽוּ־ בַ֖יִת לְדָוִֽד׃ ḥî·rām me·leḵ- ṣōr way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- dā·wiḏ ’ă·rā·zîm wa·‘ă·ṣê wə·ḥā·rā·šê ‘êṣ wə·ḥā·rā·šê ’e·ḇen qîr way·yiḇ·nū- ḇa·yiṯ lə·ḏā·wiḏWLC · 11

David’s Family Grows

And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel… and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

דָּוִ֔ד וַיֵּ֣דַע כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֛ה הֱכִינ֧וֹ לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְכִי֙ נִשֵּׂ֣א מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ בַּעֲב֖וּר עַמּ֥וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס dā·wiḏ way·yê·ḏa‘ kî- Yah·weh hĕ·ḵî·nōw lə·me·leḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl wə·ḵî niś·śê mam·laḵ·tōw ba·‘ă·ḇūr ‘am·mōw yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 12

After he had arrived from Hebron, David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him.

אַחֲרֵ֖י בֹּא֣וֹ מֵחֶבְר֑וֹן דָּוִ֨ד וַיִּקַּח֩ ע֜וֹד פִּֽלַגְשִׁ֤ים וְנָשִׁים֙ מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם ע֛וֹד בָּנִ֥ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ וַיִּוָּ֥לְדּוּ לְדָוִ֖ד ’a·ḥă·rê bō·’ōw mê·ḥeḇ·rō·wn dā·wiḏ way·yiq·qaḥ ‘ō·wḏ pi·laḡ·šîm wə·nā·šîm mî·rū·šā·lim ‘ō·wḏ bā·nîm ū·ḇā·nō·wṯ way·yiw·wå̄·lə·dū lə·ḏā·wiḏWLC · 13

These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

Two Victories over the Philistines

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of [him]; but [David] learned [of this] and went down to the stronghold.

Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים בָּ֑אוּ וַיִּנָּטְשׁ֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃ ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm bā·’ū way·yin·nā·ṭə·šū bə·‘ê·meq rə·p̄ā·’îmWLC · 18

So David inquired of the LORD “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go up,” replied the LORD -, “for I will surely deliver… the Philistines into your hand.”

דָּוִ֤ד וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל בַּֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאֶֽעֱלֶה֙ אֶל־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים הֲתִתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיָדִ֑י עֲלֵ֔ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־ דָּוִד֙ כִּֽי־ נָתֹ֥ן אֶתֵּ֛ן אֶת־ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ dā·wiḏ way·yiš·’al Yah·weh lê·mōr ha·’e·‘ĕ·leh ’el- pə·liš·tîm hă·ṯit·tə·nêm bə·yā·ḏî ‘ă·lêh way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’el- dā·wiḏ kî- nā·ṯōn ’et·tên ’eṯ- hap·pə·liš·tîm bə·yā·ḏe·ḵāWLC · 19

So David went vvv to Baal-perazim, where he defeated [the Philistines]… and said, “Like a bursting flood, the LORD has burst out against my enemies before me.” So… he called… that vvv place Baal-perazim.

דָוִ֥ד וַיָּבֹ֨א בְּבַֽעַל־ פְּרָצִים֮ וַיַּכֵּ֣ם שָׁ֣ם דָּוִד֒ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כְּפֶ֣רֶץ מָ֑יִם יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־ פָּרַ֨ץ אֹיְבַ֛י לְפָנַ֖י עַל־ כֵּ֗ן קָרָ֛א שֵֽׁם־ הַה֖וּא בַּ֥עַל הַמָּק֥וֹם פְּרָצִֽים׃ ḏā·wiḏ way·yā·ḇō bə·ḇa·‘al- pə·rā·ṣîm way·yak·kêm šām dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer kə·p̄e·reṣ mā·yim Yah·weh ’eṯ- pā·raṣ ’ō·yə·ḇay lə·p̄ā·nay ‘al- kên qā·rā šêm- ha·hū ba·‘al ham·mā·qō·wm pə·rā·ṣîmWLC · 20

There the Philistines abandoned their idols, and David and his men carried them away.

𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤅𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤌

שָׁ֖ם וַיַּעַזְבוּ־ עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֑ם אֶת־ דָּוִ֖ד וַאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃פ וַיִּשָּׂאֵ֥ם šām way·ya·‘az·ḇū- ‘ă·ṣab·bê·hem ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ wa·’ă·nā·šāw way·yiś·śā·’êmWLC · 21

Once again… the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤈𐤔𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌

וַיֹּסִ֥פוּ ע֛וֹד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים לַֽעֲל֑וֹת וַיִּנָּֽטְשׁ֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃ way·yō·si·p̄ū ‘ō·wḏ pə·liš·tîm la·‘ă·lō·wṯ way·yin·nā·ṭə·šū bə·‘ê·meq rə·p̄ā·’îmWLC · 22

So David inquired of the LORD, who answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees.

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤎𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤌

דָּוִד֙ וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל בַּֽיהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א תַעֲלֶ֑ה הָסֵב֙ אֶל־ אַ֣חֲרֵיהֶ֔ם וּבָ֥אתָ לָהֶ֖ם מִמּ֥וּל בְּכָאִֽים׃ dā·wiḏ way·yiš·’al Yah·weh way·yō·mer lō ṯa·‘ă·leh hā·sêḇ ’el- ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ū·ḇā·ṯā lā·hem mim·mūl bə·ḵā·’îmWLC · 23

As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that… the LORD has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”

וִ֠יהִי בְּשָׁמְעֲךָ אֶת־ ק֧וֹל צְעָדָ֛ה בְּרָאשֵׁ֥י הַבְּכָאִ֖ים תֶּחֱרָ֑ץ כִּ֣י אָ֗ז אָ֣ז יְהוָה֙ יָצָ֤א לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לְהַכּ֖וֹת בְּמַחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ wî·hî bə·šå̄·mə·ʿă·ḵå̄ ’eṯ- qō·wl ṣə·‘ā·ḏāh bə·rā·šê hab·bə·ḵā·’îm te·ḥĕ·rāṣ kî ’āz ’āz Yah·weh yā·ṣā lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā lə·hak·kō·wṯ bə·ma·ḥă·nêh p̄ə·liš·tîmWLC · 24

So David… did as the LORD had commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to… Gezer.
