Chapter 24

David’s Military Census

Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He stirred up David against them, saying, “Go [and] take a census of Israel and Judah.”

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄

וַיֹּ֙סֶף֙ אַף־ יְהוָ֔ה לַחֲר֖וֹת בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּ֨סֶת אֶת־ דָּוִ֤ד בָּהֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֵ֛ךְ מְנֵ֥ה אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְאֶת־ יְהוּדָֽה׃ way·yō·sep̄ ’ap̄- Yah·weh la·ḥă·rō·wṯ bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yā·seṯ ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ bā·hem lê·mōr lêḵ mə·nêh ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl wə·’eṯ- yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 1

So the king said to Joab the commander of his army, who [was] with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to vvv Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number…”

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ יוֹאָ֣ב׀ שַׂר־ הַחַ֣יִל אֲשֶׁר־ אִתּ֗וֹ שֽׁוּט־ נָ֞א בְּכָל־ שִׁבְטֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִדָּן֙ וְעַד־ בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע וּפִקְד֖וּ אֶת־ הָעָ֑ם וְיָ֣דַעְתִּ֔י אֵ֖ת מִסְפַּ֥ר הָעָֽם׃ס ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’el- yō·w·’āḇ śar- ha·ḥa·yil ’ă·šer- ’it·tōw šūṭ- nā bə·ḵāl šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl mid·dān wə·‘aḏ- bə·’êr še·ḇa‘ ū·p̄iq·ḏū ’eṯ- hā·‘ām wə·yā·ḏa‘·tî ’êṯ mis·par hā·‘āmWLC · 2

But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God… multiply the troops a hundred times over…, and may the eyes of my lord the king see [it]. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”

יוֹאָ֜ב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ יְהוָה֩ אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ אֶל־ וְיוֹסֵ֣ף הָעָ֜ם מֵאָ֣ה פְעָמִ֔ים כָּהֵ֤ם׀ וְכָהֵם֙ וְעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ רֹא֑וֹת לָ֥מָּה וַאדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ חָפֵ֖ץ הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּדָּבָ֥ר yō·w·’āḇ way·yō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’el- wə·yō·w·sêp̄ hā·‘ām mê·’āh p̄ə·‘ā·mîm kā·hêm wə·ḵā·hêm wə·‘ê·nê ’ă·ḏō·nî- ham·me·leḵ rō·’ō·wṯ lām·māh wa·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ ḥā·p̄êṣ haz·zeh bad·dā·ḇārWLC · 3

Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to register the troops of Israel.

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ דְּבַר־ וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק אֶל־ יוֹאָ֔ב וְעַ֖ל שָׂרֵ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל יוֹאָ֜ב וְשָׂרֵ֤י הַחַ֙יִל֙ וַיֵּצֵ֨א לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לִפְקֹ֥ד אֶת־ הָעָ֖ם אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ham·me·leḵ də·ḇar- way·ye·ḥĕ·zaq ’el- yō·w·’āḇ wə·‘al śā·rê he·ḥā·yil yō·w·’āḇ wə·śā·rê ha·ḥa·yil way·yê·ṣê lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ lip̄·qōḏ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 4

They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward Gad… and Jazer.

וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ בַעֲרוֹעֵ֗ר יְמִ֥ין הָעִ֛יר אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּתוֹךְ־ הַנַּ֥חַל הַגָּ֖ד וְאֶל־ יַעְזֵֽר׃ way·ya·‘aḇ·rū ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên way·ya·ḥă·nū ḇa·‘ă·rō·w·‘êr yə·mîn hā·‘îr ’ă·šer bə·ṯō·wḵ- han·na·ḥal hag·gāḏ wə·’el- ya‘·zêrWLC · 5

Then they went to Gilead and the land vvv of Tahtim-hodshi, and vvv on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ הַגִּלְעָ֔דָה וְאֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ תַּחְתִּ֖ים חָדְשִׁ֑י וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ דָּ֣נָה יַּ֔עַן וְסָבִ֖יב אֶל־ צִידֽוֹן׃ way·yā·ḇō·’ū hag·gil·‘ā·ḏāh wə·’el- ’e·reṣ taḥ·tîm ḥā·ḏə·šî way·yā·ḇō·’ū dā·nāh ya·‘an wə·sā·ḇîḇ ’el- ṣî·ḏō·wnWLC · 6

They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah, vvv [to] Beersheba.

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ מִבְצַר־ צֹ֔ר וְכָל־ עָרֵ֥י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י וַיֵּֽצְא֛וּ אֶל־ נֶ֥גֶב יְהוּדָ֖ה בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ way·yā·ḇō·’ū miḇ·ṣar- ṣōr wə·ḵāl ‘ā·rê ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî way·yê·ṣə·’ū ’el- ne·ḡeḇ yə·hū·ḏāh bə·’êr šā·ḇa‘WLC · 7

At the end of nine months and twenty days, having gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem.

מִקְצֵ֨ה תִשְׁעָ֧ה חֳדָשִׁ֛ים וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים י֖וֹם וַיָּשֻׁ֖טוּ בְּכָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ miq·ṣêh ṯiš·‘āh ḥo·ḏā·šîm wə·‘eś·rîm yō·wm way·yā·šu·ṭū bə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ way·yā·ḇō·’ū yə·rū·šā·limWLC · 8

And Joab reported to the king the total number of the troops… In Israel there were 800,000 {}… men of valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000…

Judgment for David’s Sin

After… [David] had numbered the troops, [his] conscience was stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”

When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s… seer:

דָּוִ֖ד וַיָּ֥קָם בַּבֹּ֑קֶר פ וּדְבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־ גָּ֣ד הַנָּבִ֔יא דָוִ֖ד לֵאמֹֽר׃ חֹזֵ֥ה dā·wiḏ way·yā·qām bab·bō·qɛr p̄ ū·ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’el- gāḏ han·nā·ḇî ḏā·wiḏ lê·mōr ḥō·zêhWLC · 11

“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering… you three [options]. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”

הָל֞וֹךְ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֶל־ דָּוִ֗ד כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר אָנֹכִ֖י נוֹטֵ֣ל עָלֶ֑יךָ שָׁלֹ֕שׁ בְּחַר־ לְךָ֥ אַֽחַת־ מֵהֶ֖ם וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ לָּֽךְ׃ hā·lō·wḵ wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’el- dā·wiḏ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ā·nō·ḵî nō·w·ṭêl ‘ā·le·ḵā šā·lōš bə·ḥar- lə·ḵā ’a·ḥaṯ- mê·hem wə·’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lāḵWLC · 12

So Gad went and said to David -, “Do you choose to endure… three years of famine in your land, three months of fleeing vvv the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply… to Him who sent me.”

גָ֥ד וַיָּבֹא־ וַיַּגֶּד־ אֶל־ דָּוִ֖ד ל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֡וֹ הֲתָב֣וֹא לְךָ֣ שֶֽׁבַע שָׁנִ֣ים׀ רָעָ֣ב׀ בְּאַרְצֶ֡ךָ אִם־ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה חֳ֠דָשִׁים נֻסְךָ֨ וְה֣וּא רֹדְפֶ֗ךָ לִפְנֵֽי־ צָרֶ֜יךָ וְאִם־ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת יָמִ֥ים הֱ֠יוֹת דֶּ֙בֶר֙ בְּאַרְצֶ֔ךָ עַתָּה֙ דַּ֣ע וּרְאֵ֔ה מָה־ דָּבָֽר׃ס אָשִׁ֥יב שֹׁלְחִ֖י ḡāḏ way·yā·ḇō- way·yag·geḏ- ’el- dā·wiḏ lōw way·yō·mer lōw hă·ṯā·ḇō·w lə·ḵā še·ḇa‘ šā·nîm rā·‘āḇ bə·’ar·ṣe·ḵā ’im- šə·lō·šāh ḥo·ḏā·šîm nus·ḵā wə·hū rō·ḏə·p̄e·ḵā lip̄·nê- ṣā·re·ḵā wə·’im- šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîm hĕ·yō·wṯ de·ḇer bə·’ar·ṣe·ḵā ‘at·tāh da‘ ū·rə·’êh māh- dā·ḇār ’ā·šîḇ šō·lə·ḥîWLC · 13

David… answered Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies [are] great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”

A Plague on Israel

So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to vvv Beersheba died.

יְהוָ֥ה וַיִּתֵּ֨ן דֶּ֙בֶר֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵהַבֹּ֖קֶר וְעַד־ מוֹעֵ֑ד עֵ֣ת שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף הָעָ֗ם מִן־ מִדָּן֙ וְעַד־ בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע אִֽישׁ׃ וַיָּ֣מָת Yah·weh way·yit·tên de·ḇer bə·yiś·rā·’êl mê·hab·bō·qer wə·‘aḏ- mō·w·‘êḏ ‘êṯ šiḇ·‘îm ’e·lep̄ hā·‘ām min- mid·dān wə·‘aḏ- bə·’êr še·ḇa‘ ’îš way·yā·māṯWLC · 15

But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

When David saw the angel striking down the people,… he said to the LORD, “Surely I, [the shepherd], have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”

David Builds an Altar

And that day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

הַה֑וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם גָ֥ד וַיָּבֹא־ אֶל־ דָּוִ֖ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ עֲלֵה֙ הָקֵ֤ם מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לַֽיהוָה֙ בְּגֹ֖רֶן אָרָנְיָה הַיְבֻסִֽי׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm ḡāḏ way·yā·ḇō- ’el- dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer lōw ‘ă·lêh hā·qêm miz·bê·aḥ Yah·weh bə·ḡō·ren ʾå̄·rå̄·nə·yå̄h hay·ḇu·sîWLC · 18

So David went up at the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤂𐤃 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤄

דָּוִד֙ וַיַּ֤עַל כִּדְבַר־ גָּ֔ד כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יְהוָֽה׃ צִוָּ֥ה dā·wiḏ way·ya·‘al kiḏ·ḇar- gāḏ ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ṣiw·wāhWLC · 19

When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown… before the king.

אֲרַ֗וְנָה וַיַּשְׁקֵ֣ף וַיַּ֤רְא אֶת־ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וְאֶת־ עֲבָדָ֔יו עֹבְרִ֖ים עָלָ֑יו אֲרַ֔וְנָה וַיֵּצֵ֣א וַיִּשְׁתַּ֧חוּ אַפָּ֖יו אָֽרְצָה׃ לַמֶּ֛לֶךְ ’ă·raw·nāh way·yaš·qêp̄ way·yar ’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw ‘ō·ḇə·rîm ‘ā·lāw ’ă·raw·nāh way·yê·ṣê way·yiš·ta·ḥū ’ap·pāw ’ā·rə·ṣāh lam·me·leḵWLC · 20

“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To buy your threshing floor…,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be halted.”

מַדּ֛וּעַ אֲדֹנִֽי־ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בָּ֥א אֶל־ עַבְדּ֑וֹ אֲרַ֔וְנָה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לִקְנ֧וֹת הַגֹּ֗רֶן מֵעִמְּךָ֣ אֶת־ דָּוִ֜ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לִבְנ֤וֹת מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל הָעָֽם׃ וְתֵעָצַ֥ר mad·dū·a‘ ’ă·ḏō·nî- ham·me·leḵ bā ’el- ‘aḇ·dōw ’ă·raw·nāh way·yō·mer liq·nō·wṯ hag·gō·ren mê·‘im·mə·ḵā ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer liḇ·nō·wṯ miz·bê·aḥ Yah·weh ham·mag·gê·p̄āh mê·‘al hā·‘ām wə·ṯê·‘ā·ṣarWLC · 21

Araunah said to David, “May my lord the king take whatever seems good to him and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.

אֲרַ֙וְנָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ דָּוִ֔ד אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יִקַּ֥ח רְאֵה֙ הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינוֹ וְיַ֛עַל הַבָּקָ֣ר לָעֹלָ֔ה וְהַמֹּרִגִּ֛ים הַבָּקָ֖ר וּכְלֵ֥י לָעֵצִֽים׃ ’ă·raw·nāh way·yō·mer ’el- dā·wiḏ ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ yiq·qaḥ rə·’êh haṭ·ṭō·wḇ bə·ʿē·nō wə·ya·‘al hab·bā·qār lā·‘ō·lāh wə·ham·mō·rig·gîm hab·bā·qār ū·ḵə·lê lā·‘ê·ṣîmWLC · 22

O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” [He] also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”

𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤎 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤑𐤊

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֲרַ֥וְנָה נָתַ֛ן הַכֹּ֗ל לַמֶּ֑לֶךְס אֲרַ֙וְנָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ יִרְצֶֽךָ׃ ham·me·leḵ ’ă·raw·nāh nā·ṯan hak·kōl lam·mɛ·lɛḵs ’ă·raw·nāh way·yō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yir·ṣe·ḵāWLC · 23

“No,” replied the king -, “I insist on paying… a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

לֹ֚א וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶל־ אֲרַ֗וְנָה כִּֽי־ קָנ֨וֹ אֶקְנֶ֤ה מֵאֽוֹתְךָ֙ בִּמְחִ֔יר וְלֹ֧א אַעֲלֶ֛ה לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהַ֖י עֹל֣וֹת חִנָּ֑ם דָּוִ֤ד אֶת־ וַיִּ֨קֶן הַגֹּ֙רֶן֙ וְאֶת־ הַבָּקָ֔ר חֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ שְׁקָלִ֥ים בְּכֶ֖סֶף lō way·yō·mer ham·me·leḵ ’el- ’ă·raw·nāh kî- qā·nōw ’eq·neh mê·’ō·wṯ·ḵā bim·ḥîr wə·lō ’a·‘ă·leh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hay ‘ō·lō·wṯ ḥin·nām dā·wiḏ ’eṯ- way·yi·qen hag·gō·ren wə·’eṯ- hab·bā·qār ḥă·miš·šîm šə·qā·lîm bə·ḵe·sep̄WLC · 24

And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was halted.
