Chapter 23

David’s Last Song

These are the last words of David: “The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man raised on high, the one anointed by the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel:

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤅𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤒𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤆𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; His word was on my tongue.

The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me, ‘He who rules the people with justice, who rules in the fear of God,

אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַר֙ צ֣וּר יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל דִבֶּ֖ר לִ֥י מוֹשֵׁל֙ בָּאָדָ֔ם צַדִּ֕יק מוֹשֵׁ֖ל יִרְאַ֥ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ṣūr yiś·rā·’êl ḏib·ber lî mō·wō·šêl bā·’ā·ḏām ṣad·dîq mō·wō·šêl yir·’aṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 3

is like the light of the morning at sunrise… of a cloudless… dawn, the glistening after the rain on the sprouting grass of the earth.’

וּכְא֥וֹר בֹּ֖קֶר שָׁ֑מֶשׁ יִזְרַח־ לֹ֣א עָב֔וֹת בֹּ֚קֶר מִנֹּ֥גַהּ מִמָּטָ֖ר דֶּ֥שֶׁא מֵאָֽרֶץ׃ ū·ḵə·’ō·wr bō·qer šā·meš yiz·raḥ- lō ‘ā·ḇō·wṯ bō·qer min·nō·ḡah mim·mā·ṭār de·še mê·’ā·reṣWLC · 4

Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an everlasting covenant, ordered and secured… in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire…?

כִּֽי־ לֹא־ בֵּיתִ֖י כֵ֥ן עִם־ אֵ֑ל כִּי֩ שָׂ֣ם לִ֗י עוֹלָ֜ם בְרִ֨ית עֲרוּכָ֤ה וּשְׁמֻרָ֔ה כִּֽי־ בַכֹּל֙ לֹ֥א יַצְמִֽיחַ׃ כָל־ יִשְׁעִ֥י וְכָל־ חֵ֖פֶץ כִּֽי־ kî- lō- bê·ṯî ḵên ‘im- ’êl kî śām lî ‘ō·w·lām ḇə·rîṯ ‘ă·rū·ḵāh ū·šə·mu·rāh kî- ḇak·kōl lō yaṣ·mî·aḥ ḵāl yiš·‘î wə·ḵāl ḥê·p̄eṣ kî-WLC · 5

But the worthless are all like thorns raked aside, for they can never be gathered by hand.

וּבְלִיַּ֕עַל כֻּלָּ֑הַם כְּק֥וֹץ מֻנָ֖ד כִּֽי־ לֹ֥א יִקָּֽחוּ׃ בְיָ֖ד ū·ḇə·lî·ya·‘al kul·lā·ham kə·qō·wṣ mu·nāḏ kî- lō yiq·qā·ḥū ḇə·yāḏWLC · 6

The man [who] touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a spear. The fire burns them to ashes… in [the] place [where they lie].”

David’s Mighty Men

These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-basshebeth… the Tahchemonite was chief of the Three. He wielded his spear against eight hundred [men], whom he killed at one time.

Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo vvv the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he [went] with David to taunt the Philistines who had gathered for battle [at Pas-dammim]. The men of Israel retreated,

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤁𐤍 𐤃𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤐𐤌 𐤁𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤅

וְאַחֲרוֹ אֶלְעָזָ֥ר בֶּן־ דֹּדִי בֶּן־ אֲחֹחִ֑י בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה גִבֹּרִים עִם־ דָּוִ֗ד בְּחָֽרְפָ֤ם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים נֶאֶסְפוּ־ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה שָׁ֣ם אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ wə·ʾa·ḥă·rō ’el·‘ā·zār ben- dō·ḏī ben- ’ă·ḥō·ḥî biš·lō·šāh ḡib·bō·rīm ‘im- dā·wiḏ bə·ḥā·rə·p̄ām bap·pə·liš·tîm ne·’es·p̄ū- lam·mil·ḥā·māh šām ’îš yiś·rā·’êl way·ya·‘ă·lūWLC · 9

but Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines until… his hand grew weary and stuck… to his sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to plunder the dead.

𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤒𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤉𐤂𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤒 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤊 𐤋𐤐𐤔𐤈𐤎

ה֣וּא קָם֩ וַיַּ֨ךְ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים עַ֣ד׀ כִּֽי־ יָד֗וֹ יָגְעָ֣ה וַתִּדְבַּ֤ק יָדוֹ֙ אֶל־ הַחֶ֔רֶב יְהוָ֛ה וַיַּ֧עַשׂ גְדוֹלָ֖ה תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה הַה֑וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם וְהָעָ֛ם יָשֻׁ֥בוּ אַחֲרָ֖יו אַךְ־ לְפַשֵּֽׁט׃ס hū qām way·yaḵ bap·pə·liš·tîm ‘aḏ kî- yā·ḏōw yā·ḡə·‘āh wat·tiḏ·baq yā·ḏōw ’el- ha·ḥe·reḇ Yah·weh way·ya·‘aś ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh tə·šū·‘āh ha·hū bay·yō·wm wə·hā·‘ām yā·šu·ḇū ’a·ḥă·rāw ’aḵ- lə·p̄aš·šêṭWLC · 10

And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines had banded together near - a field… full of lentils, [Israel’s] troops fled from [them].

𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤂𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤓𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤍𐤎 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌

וְאַחֲרָ֛יו שַׁמָּ֥א בֶן־ אָגֵ֖א הָרָרִ֑י פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים וַיֵּאָסְפ֨וּ לַחַיָּ֗ה שָׁ֞ם וַתְּהִי־ חֶלְקַ֤ת הַשָּׂדֶה֙ מְלֵאָ֣ה עֲדָשִׁ֔ים וְהָעָ֥ם נָ֖ס מִפְּנֵ֥י פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ wə·’a·ḥă·rāw šam·mā ḇen- ’ā·ḡê hā·rā·rî p̄ə·liš·tîm way·yê·’ā·sə·p̄ū la·ḥay·yāh šām wat·tə·hî- ḥel·qaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh mə·lê·’āh ‘ă·ḏā·šîm wə·hā·‘ām nās mip·pə·nê p̄ə·liš·tîmWLC · 11

But [Shammah] took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.

וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֤ב בְּתוֹךְ־ הַֽחֶלְקָה֙ וַיַּצִּילֶ֔הָ וַיַּ֖ךְ אֶת־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים יְהוָ֖ה וַיַּ֥עַשׂ גְדוֹלָֽה׃ס תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה way·yiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ bə·ṯō·wḵ- ha·ḥel·qāh way·yaṣ·ṣî·le·hā way·yaḵ ’eṯ- pə·liš·tîm Yah·weh way·ya·‘aś ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh tə·šū·‘āhWLC · 12

At harvest time, three of the thirty chief men went down… to David at the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

אֶל־ קָצִיר֙ שְׁלֹשִׁים מֵהַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֣ים רֹ֗אשׁ וַיֵּרְד֨וּ וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ אֶל־ דָּוִ֔ד אֶל־ מְעָרַ֖ת עֲדֻלָּ֑ם וְחַיַּ֣ת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים חֹנָ֖ה בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃ ’el- qā·ṣîr šə·lō·šīm mê·haš·šə·lō·šîm rōš way·yê·rə·ḏū way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- dā·wiḏ ’el- mə·‘ā·raṯ ‘ă·ḏul·lām wə·ḥay·yaṯ pə·liš·tîm ḥō·nāh bə·‘ê·meq rə·p̄ā·’îmWLC · 13

At that time David was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines… vvv was at Bethlehem.

אָ֣ז וְדָוִ֖ד בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה וּמַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אָ֖ז בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ ’āz wə·ḏā·wiḏ bam·mə·ṣū·ḏāh ū·maṣ·ṣaḇ pə·liš·tîm ’āz bêṯ lā·ḥemWLC · 14

David longed [for water] and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate vvv of Bethlehem -!”

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓

דָוִ֖ד וַיִּתְאַוֶּ֥ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר מִ֚י יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי מַ֔יִם מִבֹּ֥אר בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ בֵּֽית־ לֶ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֥ר ḏā·wiḏ way·yiṯ·’aw·weh way·yō·mar mî yaš·qê·nî ma·yim mib·bōr baš·šā·‘ar bêṯ- le·ḥem ’ă·šerWLC · 15

So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate… vvv of Bethlehem, and brought [it] back to David. But he refused… to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,

𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤒𐤏𐤅 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת הַגִּבֹּרִ֜ים וַיִּבְקְעוּ֩ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־ מַ֙יִם֙ מִבֹּ֤אר בַּשַּׁ֔עַר וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ בֵּֽית־ לֶ֙חֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר וַיָּבִ֣אוּ אֶל־ דָּוִ֑ד וְלֹ֤א אָבָה֙ לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם וַיַּסֵּ֥ךְ אֹתָ֖ם לַֽיהוָֽה׃ šə·lō·šeṯ hag·gib·bō·rîm way·yiḇ·qə·‘ū p̄ə·liš·tîm bə·ma·ḥă·nêh way·yiš·’ă·ḇū- ma·yim mib·bōr baš·ša·‘ar way·yiś·’ū bêṯ- le·ḥem ’ă·šer way·yā·ḇi·’ū ’el- dā·wiḏ wə·lō ’ā·ḇāh liš·tō·w·ṯām way·yas·sêḵ ’ō·ṯām Yah·wehWLC · 16

saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is [this not] the blood of the men… who risked their lives?” So he refused… to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.

He also struck down an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from [his] hand, and killed [the Egyptian] with his own spear.
