Chapter 16

David and Ziba

When David had gone a little beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him. He had a pair of saddled donkeys loaded with two hundred [loaves] of bread, a hundred clusters of raisins, a hundred summer fruits, and a skin of wine.

𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤌𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤑𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤐𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤑𐤌𐤃 𐤇𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤒𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤉𐤍

וְדָוִ֗ד עָבַ֤ר מְעַט֙ מֵֽהָרֹ֔אשׁ צִיבָ֛א נַ֥עַר מְפִי־ בֹ֖שֶׁת וְהִנֵּ֥ה לִקְרָאת֑וֹ וְצֶ֨מֶד חֲבֻשִׁ֗ים חֲמֹרִ֜ים וַעֲלֵיהֶם֩ מָאתַ֨יִם לֶ֜חֶם וּמֵאָ֧ה צִמּוּקִ֛ים וּמֵ֥אָה קַ֖יִץ וְנֵ֥בֶל יָֽיִן׃ wə·ḏā·wiḏ ‘ā·ḇar mə·‘aṭ mê·hā·rōš ṣî·ḇā na·‘ar mə·p̄î- ḇō·šeṯ wə·hin·nêh liq·rā·ṯōw wə·ṣe·meḏ ḥă·ḇu·šîm ḥă·mō·rîm wa·‘ă·lê·hem mā·ṯa·yim le·ḥem ū·mê·’āh ṣim·mū·qîm ū·mê·’āh qa·yiṣ wə·nê·ḇel yā·yinWLC · 1

“Why do you have these?” asked the king -. Ziba replied “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride, the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”

מָה־ אֵ֣לֶּה וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־ צִיבָ֖א צִ֠יבָא וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָּ֑ךְ הַחֲמוֹרִ֨ים הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לְבֵית־ לִרְכֹּ֗ב וּלְהַלֶּחֶם וְהַקַּ֙יִץ֙ הַנְּעָרִ֔ים לֶאֱכ֣וֹל וְהַיַּ֕יִן לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת הַיָּעֵ֖ף בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ māh- ’êl·leh way·yō·mer ham·me·leḵ ’el- ṣî·ḇā ṣî·ḇā way·yō·mer lāḵ ha·ḥă·mō·w·rîm ham·me·leḵ lə·ḇêṯ- lir·kōḇ ū·lə·hal·lɛ·ḥɛm wə·haq·qa·yiṣ han·nə·‘ā·rîm le·’ĕ·ḵō·wl wə·hay·ya·yin liš·tō·wṯ hay·yā·‘êp̄ bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 2

“Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king. And Ziba answered -, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my grandfather.’”

וְאַיֵּ֖ה אֲדֹנֶ֑יךָ בֶּן־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ צִיבָ֜א וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ הִנֵּה֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר הַיּ֗וֹם בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת יָשִׁ֤יבוּ לִי֙ מַמְלְכ֥וּת אָבִֽי׃ wə·’ay·yêh ’ă·ḏō·ne·ḵā ben- way·yō·mer ham·me·leḵ ṣî·ḇā way·yō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ hin·nêh yō·wō·šêḇ bî·rū·šā·lim kî ’ā·mar hay·yō·wm bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’êṯ yā·šî·ḇū lî mam·lə·ḵūṯ ’ā·ḇîWLC · 3

So the king said to Ziba, “All that [belongs] vvv to Mephibosheth is now yours “I humbly bow before you,” said Ziba. “May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king!”

Shimei Curses David

As King David approached… Bahurim, a man from the family of the house of Saul was just… coming out. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and as he approached…, he kept yelling out curses.

הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִ֖ד וּבָ֛א עַד־ בַּֽחוּרִ֑ים אִ֨ישׁ מִמִּשְׁפַּ֣חַת בֵּית־ שָׁא֗וּל וְהִנֵּ֣ה מִשָּׁם֩ יוֹצֵ֜א וּשְׁמוֹ֙ שִׁמְעִ֣י בֶן־ גֵּרָ֔א יֹצֵ֥א יָצ֖וֹא וּמְקַלֵּֽל׃ ham·me·leḵ dā·wiḏ ū·ḇā ‘aḏ- ba·ḥū·rîm ’îš mim·miš·pa·ḥaṯ bêṯ- šā·’ūl wə·hin·nêh miš·šām yō·w·ṣê ū·šə·mōw šim·‘î ḇen- gê·rā yō·ṣê yā·ṣō·w ū·mə·qal·lêlWLC · 5

He threw stones… at David and at all the servants of the king, though the troops and all the mighty men [were] on David’s… right and left.

וַיְסַקֵּ֤ל בָּֽאֲבָנִים֙ אֶת־ דָּוִ֔ד וְאֶת־ כָּל־ עַבְדֵ֖י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ הָעָם֙ וְכָל־ הַגִּבֹּרִ֔ים דָּוִ֑ד וְכָל־ מִימִינ֖וֹ וּמִשְּׂמֹאלֽוֹ׃ way·saq·qêl bā·’ă·ḇā·nîm ’eṯ- dā·wiḏ wə·’eṯ- kāl- ‘aḇ·ḏê ham·me·leḵ hā·‘ām wə·ḵāl hag·gib·bō·rîm dā·wiḏ wə·ḵāl mî·mî·nōw ū·miś·śə·mō·lōwWLC · 6

And as he yelled curses, Shimei said, “Get out, get out, you worthless man of bloodshed…!

וְכֹֽה־ בְּקַֽלְל֑וֹ שִׁמְעִ֖י אָמַ֥ר צֵ֥א צֵ֛א הַבְּלִיָּֽעַל׃ אִ֥ישׁ הַדָּמִ֖ים וְאִ֥ישׁ wə·ḵōh- bə·qal·lōw šim·‘î ’ā·mar ṣê ṣê hab·bə·lî·yā·‘al ’îš had·dā·mîm wə·’îšWLC · 7

The LORD has paid you back… for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of bloodshed!”

Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over… and cut off his head…!” -

אֲבִישַׁ֤י בֶּן־ צְרוּיָה֙ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָ֣מָּה הַזֶּ֔ה אֶת־ הַמֵּת֙ הַכֶּ֤לֶב יְקַלֵּ֞ל אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ אֶעְבְּרָה־ נָּ֖א רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ס וְאָסִ֥ירָה אֶת־ ’ă·ḇî·šay ben- ṣə·rū·yāh way·yō·mer ’el- ham·me·leḵ lām·māh haz·zeh ’eṯ- ham·mêṯ hak·ke·leḇ yə·qal·lêl ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ ’e‘·bə·rāh- nā rō·šōw wə·’ā·sî·rāh ’eṯ-WLC · 9

But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the LORD told him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why did you do this?’”

Then David said to Abishai… and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son, - my own flesh and blood, seeks my life. How much more, then, vvv [this] Benjamite! Leave him alone… and let him curse me, for the LORD has told him so.

Perhaps the LORD will see my affliction and repay… me with good for the cursing [I receive] today…”

אוּלַ֛י יְהוָ֖ה יִרְאֶ֥ה בְּעֲוֹנִי וְהֵשִׁ֨יב יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ טוֹבָ֔ה תַּ֥חַת קִלְלָת֖וֹ הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ ’ū·lay Yah·weh yir·’eh bə·ʿă·wō·nī wə·hê·šîḇ Yah·weh lî ṭō·w·ḇāh ta·ḥaṯ qil·lā·ṯōw hay·yō·wm haz·zehWLC · 12

So David and his men proceeded along the road as Shimei went along the ridge of the hill opposite him. As Shimei went, he yelled curses, threw stones,… and flung dust at [David].

דָּוִ֛ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֖יו וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ בַּדָּ֑רֶךְס וְשִׁמְעִ֡י הֹלֵךְ֩ בְּצֵ֨לַע הָהָ֜ר לְעֻמָּת֗וֹ הָלוֹךְ֙ וַיְקַלֵּ֔ל וַיְסַקֵּ֤ל בָּֽאֲבָנִים֙ וְעִפַּ֖ר בֶּעָפָֽר׃פ לְעֻמָּת֔וֹ dā·wiḏ wa·’ă·nā·šāw way·yê·leḵ bad·då̄·rɛḵs wə·šim·‘î hō·lêḵ bə·ṣê·la‘ hā·hār lə·‘um·mā·ṯōw hā·lō·wḵ way·qal·lêl way·saq·qêl bā·’ă·ḇā·nîm wə·‘ip·par be·‘ā·p̄ār lə·‘um·mā·ṯōwWLC · 13

Finally, the king and all the people with him arrived, exhausted. And there he refreshed himself.

The Counsel of Ahithophel and Hushai

Then Absalom and all… the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel [was] with him.

And David’s friend Hushai the Archite went to Absalom and said to [him], “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤅𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤇𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊

וַיְהִ֗י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ דָוִ֖ד רֵעֶ֥ה חוּשַׁ֧י הָאַרְכִּ֛י בָּ֞א אֶל־ אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר חוּשַׁי֙ אֶל־ אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם יְחִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ way·hî ka·’ă·šer- ḏā·wiḏ rê·‘eh ḥū·šay hā·’ar·kî bā ’el- ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm way·yō·mer ḥū·šay ’el- ’aḇ·šā·lōm yə·ḥî ham·me·leḵ yə·ḥî ham·me·leḵWLC · 16

“Is this the loyalty [you show] your friend?” Absalom replied… “Why did you not go with your friend?”

זֶ֥ה חַסְדְּךָ֖ אֶת־ רֵעֶ֑ךָ אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ חוּשַׁ֔י לָ֥מָּה לֹֽא־ הָלַ֖כְתָּ אֶת־ רֵעֶֽךָ׃ zeh ḥas·də·ḵā ’eṯ- rê·‘e·ḵā ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm way·yō·mer ’el- ḥū·šay lām·māh lō- hā·laḵ·tā ’eṯ- rê·‘e·ḵāWLC · 17

“Not at all,” Hushai… answered -. “For the one chosen by the LORD, by this people, and by all the men of Israel— his I will be, and with him I will remain.

לֹ֕א חוּשַׁי֮ אֶל־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְשָׁלֹם֒ כִּי֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּחַ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה הַזֶּ֖ה וְהָעָ֥ם וְכָל־ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹא אֶהְיֶ֖ה וְאִתּ֥וֹ אֵשֵֽׁב׃ lō ḥū·šay ’el- way·yō·mer ’aḇ·šā·lōm kî ’ă·šer bā·ḥar Yah·weh haz·zeh wə·hā·‘ām wə·ḵāl ’îš yiś·rā·’êl lō ’eh·yeh wə·’it·tōw ’ê·šêḇWLC · 18

Furthermore, whom should I serve if not his son? As I served in your father’s presence, so also I will serve… in yours.”

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give me counsel. What should we do?”

אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ אֲחִיתֹ֑פֶל הָב֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם עֵצָ֖ה מַֽה־ נַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃ ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm way·yō·mer ’el- ’ă·ḥî·ṯō·p̄el hā·ḇū lā·ḵem ‘ê·ṣāh mah- na·‘ă·śehWLC · 20

Ahithophel replied -, “Sleep with… your father’s concubines, whom he has left to take care of the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become a stench to your father, then the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”

אֲחִיתֹ֙פֶל֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם בּ֚וֹא אֶל־ אָבִ֔יךָ פִּלַגְשֵׁ֣י אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִנִּ֖יחַ לִשְׁמ֣וֹר הַבָּ֑יִת כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְשָׁמַ֤ע כִּֽי־ נִבְאַ֣שְׁתָּ אֶת־ אָבִ֔יךָ יְדֵ֖י כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתָּֽךְ׃ וְחָ֣זְק֔וּ ’ă·ḥî·ṯō·p̄el way·yō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·šā·lōm bō·w ’el- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā pi·laḡ·šê ’ă·šer hin·nî·aḥ liš·mō·wr hab·bā·yiṯ kāl- yiś·rā·’êl wə·šā·ma‘ kî- niḇ·’aš·tā ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā yə·ḏê kāl- ’ă·šer ’it·tāḵ wə·ḥā·zə·qūWLC · 21

So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with… his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

וַיַּטּ֧וּ הָאֹ֖הֶל לְאַבְשָׁל֛וֹם עַל־ הַגָּ֑ג אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ וַיָּבֹ֤א אֶל־ אָבִ֔יו פִּֽלַגְשֵׁ֣י לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ way·yaṭ·ṭū hā·’ō·hel lə·’aḇ·šā·lō·wm ‘al- hag·gāḡ ’aḇ·šā·lō·wm way·yā·ḇō ’el- ’ā·ḇîw pi·laḡ·šê lə·‘ê·nê kāl- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 22

Now in those days the advice of Ahithophel - was like the consultation of the word of God. Such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel’s advice.

הָהֵ֔ם בַּיָּמִ֣ים וַעֲצַ֣ת אֲחִיתֹ֗פֶל יָעַץ֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁאַלִ֖־ בִּדְבַ֣ר הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כֵּ֚ן כָּל־ גַּם־ לְדָוִ֖ד גַּ֥ם לְאַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃ס אֲחִיתֹ֔פֶל עֲצַ֣ת hā·hêm bay·yā·mîm wa·‘ă·ṣaṯ ’ă·ḥî·ṯō·p̄el yā·‘aṣ ka·’ă·šer ’ă·šer yiš·ʾa·li- biḏ·ḇar hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm kên kāl- gam- lə·ḏā·wiḏ gam lə·’aḇ·šā·lōm ’ă·ḥî·ṯō·p̄el ‘ă·ṣaṯWLC · 23
