Chapter 12

Nathan Rebukes David

1

Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived…, he said -, “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤓𐤀𐤔

יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח נָתָ֖ן אֶל־ דָּוִ֑ד וַיָּבֹ֣א אֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הָיוּ֙ שְׁנֵ֣י אֲנָשִׁ֗ים אֶחָ֔ת בְּעִ֣יר אֶחָ֥ד עָשִׁ֖יר וְאֶחָ֥ד רָֽאשׁ׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yiš·laḥ nā·ṯān ’el- dā·wiḏ way·yā·ḇō ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer lōw hā·yū šə·nê ’ă·nā·šîm ’e·ḥāṯ bə·‘îr ’e·ḥāḏ ‘ā·šîr wə·’e·ḥāḏ rāšWLC · 1

The rich man had a great number of… sheep and cattle,

𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓

לְעָשִׁ֗יר הָיָ֛ה הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃ צֹ֥אן וּבָקָ֖ר lə·‘ā·šîr hā·yāh har·bêh mə·’ōḏ ṣōn ū·ḇā·qārWLC · 2

but the poor man had nothing… except… one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him… and his children. It shared… his food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him.

וְלָרָ֣שׁ אֵֽין־ כֹּ֗ל כִּי֩ אִם־ אַחַ֤ת קְטַנָּה֙ כִּבְשָׂ֨ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר קָנָ֔ה וַיְחַיֶּ֕הָ וַתִּגְדַּ֥ל עִמּ֛וֹ וְעִם־ בָּנָ֖יו יַחְדָּ֑ו תֹאכַ֜ל מִפִּתּ֨וֹ תִשְׁתֶּה֙ וּמִכֹּס֤וֹ תִשְׁכָּ֔ב וּבְחֵיק֣וֹ וַתְּהִי־ כְּבַֽת׃ ל֖וֹ wə·lā·rāš ’ên- kōl kî ’im- ’a·ḥaṯ qə·ṭan·nāh kiḇ·śāh ’ă·šer qā·nāh way·ḥay·ye·hā wat·tiḡ·dal ‘im·mōw wə·‘im- bā·nāw yaḥ·dāw ṯō·ḵal mip·pit·tōw ṯiš·teh ū·mik·kō·sōw ṯiš·kāḇ ū·ḇə·ḥê·qōw wat·tə·hî- kə·ḇaṯ lōwWLC · 3

Now a traveler came to the rich… man, who refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest…”

הֵלֶךְ֮ וַיָּ֣בֹא הֶֽעָשִׁיר֒ וַיַּחְמֹ֗ל לְאִ֣ישׁ לָקַ֤חַת מִצֹּאנוֹ֙ וּמִבְּקָר֔וֹ לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת לָאֹרֵ֖חַ הַבָּא־ ל֑וֹ וַיִּקַּ֗ח אֶת־ הָרָ֔אשׁ הָאִ֣ישׁ כִּבְשַׂת֙ וַֽיַּעֲשֶׂ֔הָ לָאִ֖ישׁ הַבָּ֥א אֵלָֽיו׃ hê·leḵ way·yā·ḇō he·‘ā·šîr way·yaḥ·mōl lə·’îš lā·qa·ḥaṯ miṣ·ṣō·nōw ū·mib·bə·qā·rōw la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lā·’ō·rê·aḥ hab·bā- lōw way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- hā·rāš hā·’îš kiḇ·śaṯ way·ya·‘ă·śe·hā lā·’îš hab·bā ’ê·lāwWLC · 4

David burned with anger… against the man and said to Nathan: “As surely as the LORD… lives, the man who did this deserves to die!

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤀𐤐 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤕

דָּוִ֛ד וַיִּֽחַר־ אַ֥ף מְאֹ֑ד בָּאִ֖ישׁ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ נָתָ֔ן יְהוָ֕ה כִּ֣י בֶן־ חַי־ הָאִ֖ישׁ הָעֹשֶׂ֥ה זֹֽאת׃ מָ֔וֶת dā·wiḏ way·yi·ḥar- ’ap̄ mə·’ōḏ bā·’îš way·yō·mer ’el- nā·ṯān Yah·weh kî ḇen- ḥay- hā·’îš hā·‘ō·śeh zōṯ mā·weṯWLC · 5

  • Because he has done this… thing and has shown no pity, he must pay for the lamb four times over.”

וְאֶת־ עֵ֗קֶב אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה וְעַ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַדָּבָ֣ר לֹֽא־ חָמָֽל׃ יְשַׁלֵּ֣ם הַכִּבְשָׂ֖ה אַרְבַּעְתָּ֑יִם wə·’eṯ- ‘ê·qeḇ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh ’eṯ- haz·zeh wə·‘al ’ă·šer had·dā·ḇār lō- ḥā·māl yə·šal·lêm hak·kiḇ·śāh ’ar·ba‘·tā·yimWLC · 6

Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

נָתָ֛ן וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֶל־ דָּוִ֖ד אַתָּ֣ה הָאִ֑ישׁ כֹּה־ יְהוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָמַ֨ר אָנֹכִ֞י מְשַׁחְתִּ֤יךָֽ לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָנֹכִ֥י הִצַּלְתִּ֖יךָ מִיַּ֥ד שָׁאֽוּל׃ nā·ṯān way·yō·mer ’el- dā·wiḏ ’at·tāh hā·’îš kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·šaḥ·tî·ḵā lə·me·leḵ ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl wə·’ā·nō·ḵî hiṣ·ṣal·tî·ḵā mî·yaḏ šā·’ūlWLC · 7

I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more…

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤒𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤈 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤄

וָאֶתְּנָ֨ה לְךָ֜ אֶת־ אֲדֹנֶ֗יךָ וְאֶת־ בֵּ֣ית אֲדֹנֶ֙יךָ֙ נְשֵׁ֤י בְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָ וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה לְךָ֔ אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה וְאִ֨ם־ מְעָ֔ט וְאֹסִ֥פָה לְּךָ֖ כָּהֵ֥נָּה וְכָהֵֽנָּה׃ wā·’et·tə·nāh lə·ḵā ’eṯ- ’ă·ḏō·ne·ḵā wə·’eṯ- bêṯ ’ă·ḏō·ne·ḵā nə·šê bə·ḥê·qe·ḵā wā·’et·tə·nāh lə·ḵā ’eṯ- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl wî·hū·ḏāh wə·’im- mə·‘āṭ wə·’ō·si·p̄āh lə·ḵā kā·hên·nāh wə·ḵā·hên·nāhWLC · 8

Why then have you despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own. You have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites…

מַדּ֜וּעַ בָּזִ֣יתָ׀ אֶת־ דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת הָרַע֮ בְּעֵינוֹ אֵ֣ת הִכִּ֣יתָ אוּרִיָּ֤ה הַֽחִתִּי֙ בַחֶ֔רֶב וְאֶ֨ת־ לָקַ֥חְתָּ לְּךָ֖ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וְאֹת֣וֹ הָרַ֔גְתָּ בְּחֶ֖רֶב בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ mad·dū·a‘ bā·zî·ṯā ’eṯ- də·ḇar Yah·weh la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hā·ra‘ bə·ʿē·nō ’êṯ hik·kî·ṯā ’ū·rî·yāh ha·ḥit·tî ḇa·ḥe·reḇ wə·’eṯ- lā·qaḥ·tā lə·ḵā ’iš·tōw lə·’iš·šāh wə·’ō·ṯōw hā·raḡ·tā bə·ḥe·reḇ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wnWLC · 9

Now, therefore, the sword will never… depart from your house, because… you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

וְעַתָּ֗ה חֶ֛רֶב לֹא־ עַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם תָס֥וּר מִבֵּיתְךָ֖ עֵ֚קֶב כִּ֣י בְזִתָ֔נִי וַתִּקַּ֗ח אֶת־ אֵ֙שֶׁת֙ אוּרִיָּ֣ה הַחִתִּ֔י לִהְי֥וֹת לְךָ֖ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ס wə·‘at·tāh ḥe·reḇ lō- ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām ṯā·sūr mib·bê·ṯə·ḵā ‘ê·qeḇ kî ḇə·zi·ṯā·nî wat·tiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’ê·šeṯ ’ū·rî·yāh ha·ḥit·tî lih·yō·wṯ lə·ḵā lə·’iš·šāhWLC · 10

This is what the LORD… says: ‘I will raise up adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad daylight…

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה הִנְנִי֩ אָמַ֣ר מֵקִ֨ים רָעָה֙ עָלֶ֤יךָ מִבֵּיתֶ֔ךָ לְעֵינֶ֔יךָ וְלָקַחְתִּ֤י אֶת־ נָשֶׁ֙יךָ֙ וְנָתַתִּ֖י לְרֵעֶ֑יךָ וְשָׁכַב֙ עִם־ נָשֶׁ֔יךָ לְעֵינֵ֖י הַשֶּׁ֥מֶשׁ הַזֹּֽאת׃ kōh Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·qîm rā·‘āh ‘ā·le·ḵā mib·bê·ṯe·ḵā lə·‘ê·ne·ḵā wə·lā·qaḥ·tî ’eṯ- nā·še·ḵā wə·nā·ṯat·tî lə·rê·‘e·ḵā wə·šā·ḵaḇ ‘im- nā·še·ḵā lə·‘ê·nê haš·še·meš haz·zōṯWLC · 11

  • You have acted in secret, but I will do - this thing… in broad daylight before all Israel.’”

כִּ֥י אַתָּ֖ה עָשִׂ֣יתָ בַסָּ֑תֶר וַאֲנִ֗י אֶעֱשֶׂה֙ אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה וְנֶ֥גֶד הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ס נֶ֥גֶד כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל kî ’at·tāh ‘ā·śî·ṯā ḇas·sā·ṯer wa·’ă·nî ’e·‘ĕ·śeh ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār haz·zeh wə·ne·ḡeḏ haš·šā·meš ne·ḡeḏ kāl- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 12

David’s Loss and Repentance

Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” “The LORD has taken away your sin,” Nathan replied -. “You will not die.

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤓 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤂𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕

דָּוִד֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ נָתָ֔ן חָטָ֖אתִי לַֽיהוָ֑הס יְהוָ֛ה הֶעֱבִ֥יר חַטָּאתְךָ֖ נָתָ֜ן וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ דָּוִ֗ד גַּם־ לֹ֥א תָמֽוּת׃ dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer ’el- nā·ṯān ḥā·ṭā·ṯî lay·h·wå̄·hs Yah·weh he·‘ĕ·ḇîr ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯə·ḵā nā·ṯān way·yō·mer ’el- dā·wiḏ gam- lō ṯā·mūṯWLC · 13

Nevertheless, because by this deed… you have shown utter contempt for [the word] of the LORD, the son born to you will surely die…”

אֶ֗פֶס כִּֽי־ הַזֶּ֑ה גַּ֗ם בַּדָּבָ֖ר נִאַ֙צְתָּ֙ נִאֵ֤ץ אֶת־ אֹיְבֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה הַבֵּ֛ן הַיִּלּ֥וֹד לְךָ֖ מ֥וֹת יָמֽוּת׃ ’e·p̄es kî- haz·zeh gam bad·dā·ḇār ni·’aṣ·tā ni·’êṣ ’eṯ- ’ō·yə·ḇê Yah·weh hab·bên hay·yil·lō·wḏ lə·ḵā mō·wṯ yā·mūṯWLC · 14

After Nathan… had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.

נָתָ֖ן אֶל־ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ בֵּית֑וֹ יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ וַיִּגֹּ֣ף הַיֶּ֜לֶד אֲשֶׁ֨ר אוּרִיָּ֛ה אֵֽשֶׁת־ יָלְדָ֧ה לְדָוִ֖ד וַיֵּאָנַֽשׁ׃ nā·ṯān ’el- way·yê·leḵ bê·ṯōw Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·yig·gōp̄ hay·ye·leḏ ’ă·šer ’ū·rî·yāh ’ê·šeṯ- yā·lə·ḏāh lə·ḏā·wiḏ way·yê·’ā·našWLC · 15

David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted… and went into his house and spent the night lying [in sackcloth] on the ground.

The elders of his household stood beside him to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling… and would not eat anything with them…

On the seventh day the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Look,… while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not listen to us… So how can we tell him the child is dead? He may even harm himself…”

When David saw that his servants were whispering to one another, he perceived that the child was dead. So he… asked his servants, “Is the child dead?” “He is dead,” they replied.

Then David got up from the ground, washed and anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they set food before him, and he ate.

“What [is] this you have done?” his servants… asked. “While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but when he died, you got up and ate…”

[David] answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let him live.’

But now that he is dead, why… should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Solomon’s Birth

Then David vvv comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. So she gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved [the child]

and sent [word] through Nathan the prophet to name him - Jedidiah because the LORD [loved him].

The Capture of Rabbah

Meanwhile, Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites… and captured the royal fortress.

Then Joab sent messengers to David to say, “I have fought against Rabbah and have captured the water [supply] of the city.

Now, therefore, assemble the rest of the troops, lay siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me…”

So David assembled all the troops and went to Rabbah; and he fought against it and captured it.

Then he took the crown from the head of their king. It weighed a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount… of plunder from the city.

  • [David] brought out the people who [were] there and put [them to work] with saws, iron picks, and axes -, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the Ammonite… cities. Then [David] and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
