Chapter 1

Saul’s Death Reported to David

1

  • After the death of Saul, David returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites and stayed… in Ziklag two days.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤄𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤑𐤒𐤋𐤂 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌

וַיְהִ֗י אַֽחֲרֵי֙ מ֣וֹת שָׁא֔וּל וְדָוִ֣ד שָׁ֔ב מֵהַכּ֖וֹת אֶת־ הָעֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב דָּוִ֛ד בְּצִקְלָ֖ג שְׁנָֽיִם׃ יָמִ֥ים way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê mō·wṯ šā·’ūl wə·ḏā·wiḏ šāḇ mê·hak·kō·wṯ ’eṯ- hā·‘ă·mā·lêq way·yê·šeḇ dā·wiḏ bə·ṣiq·lāḡ šə·nā·yim yā·mîmWLC · 1

  • On the third… day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head arrived from Saul’s camp… When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him homage.

וַיְהִ֣י׀ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י וְהִנֵּה֩ בַּיּ֣וֹם אִ֨ישׁ קְרֻעִ֔ים וּבְגָדָ֣יו וַאֲדָמָ֖ה עַל־ רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיְהִי֙ בָּ֤א מִן־ שָׁא֔וּל הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ מֵעִ֣ם בְּבֹא֣וֹ אֶל־ דָּוִ֔ד וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַ֖רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃ way·hî haš·šə·lî·šî wə·hin·nêh bay·yō·wm ’îš qə·ru·‘îm ū·ḇə·ḡā·ḏāw wa·’ă·ḏā·māh ‘al- rō·šōw way·hî bā min- šā·’ūl ham·ma·ḥă·neh mê·‘im bə·ḇō·’ōw ’el- dā·wiḏ way·yip·pōl ’ar·ṣāh way·yiš·tā·ḥūWLC · 2

“Where… have you come from?” David asked “I have escaped from the Israelite camp,” he replied -.

אֵ֥י מִזֶּ֖ה תָּב֑וֹא דָּוִ֔ד וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ נִמְלָֽטְתִּי׃ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִמַּחֲנֵ֥ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו ’ê miz·zeh tā·ḇō·w dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer lōw nim·lā·ṭə·tî yiś·rā·’êl mim·ma·ḥă·nêh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāwWLC · 3

“What was the outcome…?” David asked… “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. - “Many of [them] fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.”

מֶה־ הָיָ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר דָּוִ֛ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֥יו נָ֣א הַגֶּד־ לִ֑י הָעָ֜ם נָ֨ס מִן־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַ֠יֹּאמֶר אֲשֶׁר־ וְגַם־ הַרְבֵּ֞ה מִן־ הָעָם֙ נָפַ֤ל וַיָּמֻ֔תוּ וְגַ֗ם שָׁא֛וּל בְּנ֖וֹ וִיהוֹנָתָ֥ן מֵֽתוּ׃ meh- hā·yāh had·dā·ḇār dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw nā hag·geḏ- lî hā·‘ām nās min- ham·mil·ḥā·māh way·yō·mer ’ă·šer- wə·ḡam- har·bêh min- hā·‘ām nā·p̄al way·yā·mu·ṯū wə·ḡam šā·’ūl bə·nōw wî·hō·w·nā·ṯān mê·ṯūWLC · 4

Then David… asked the young man who had brought him the report…, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

דָּוִ֔ד אֶל־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַנַּ֖עַר הַמַּגִּ֣יד ל֑וֹ אֵ֣יךְ יָדַ֔עְתָּ כִּי־ שָׁא֖וּל בְּנֽוֹ׃ וִיהֽוֹנָתָ֥ן מֵ֥ת dā·wiḏ ’el- way·yō·mer han·na·‘ar ham·mag·gîḏ lōw ’êḵ yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- šā·’ūl bə·nōw wî·hō·w·nā·ṯān mêṯWLC · 5

“I happened… to be on Mount Gilboa,” [he] - replied, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots… and the cavalry closing in on him.

𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤁𐤏 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤒𐤄𐤅

נִקְרֹ֤א נִקְרֵ֙יתִי֙ בְּהַ֣ר הַגִּלְבֹּ֔עַ הַנַּ֣עַר׀ הַמַּגִּ֣יד ל֗וֹ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר וְהִנֵּ֥ה שָׁא֖וּל נִשְׁעָ֣ן עַל־ חֲנִית֑וֹ וְהִנֵּ֥ה הָרֶ֛כֶב וּבַעֲלֵ֥י הַפָּרָשִׁ֖ים הִדְבִּקֻֽהוּ׃ niq·rō niq·rê·ṯî bə·har hag·gil·bō·a‘ han·na·‘ar ham·mag·gîḏ lōw way·yō·mer wə·hin·nêh šā·’ūl niš·‘ān ‘al- ḥă·nî·ṯōw wə·hin·nêh hā·re·ḵeḇ ū·ḇa·‘ă·lê hap·pā·rā·šîm hiḏ·bi·qu·hūWLC · 6

When he turned around… and saw me, he called out to me, and I answered, ‘Here I am!’

וַיִּ֥פֶן אַחֲרָ֖יו וַיִּרְאֵ֑נִי וַיִּקְרָ֣א אֵלָ֔י וָאֹמַ֖ר הִנֵּֽנִי׃ way·yi·p̄en ’a·ḥă·rāw way·yir·’ê·nî way·yiq·rā ’ê·lāy wā·’ō·mar hin·nê·nîWLC · 7

‘Who are you?’ he asked So I told him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

מִי־ אָ֑תָּה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לִ֖י וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אָנֹֽכִי׃ עֲמָלֵקִ֖י mî- ’āt·tāh way·yō·mer lî way·yō·mɛr ’ê·lāw ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ă·mā·lê·qîWLC · 8

Then he begged me,… ‘Stand… over me and kill me, for agony has seized me, but my life… still lingers.’

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤍𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤃

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י עֲמָד־ נָ֤א עָלַי֙ וּמֹ֣תְתֵ֔נִי כִּ֥י הַשָּׁבָ֑ץ אֲחָזַ֖נִי כִּֽי־ נַפְשִׁ֖י בִּֽי׃ כָל־ ע֥וֹד way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ‘ă·māḏ- nā ‘ā·lay ū·mō·ṯə·ṯê·nî kî haš·šā·ḇāṣ ’ă·ḥā·za·nî kî- nap̄·šî bî ḵāl ‘ō·wḏWLC · 9

So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

וָאֶעֱמֹ֤ד עָלָיו֙ וַאֲמֹ֣תְתֵ֔הוּ כִּ֣י יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אַחֲרֵ֣י נִפְל֑וֹ לֹ֥א יִֽחְיֶ֖ה וָאֶקַּ֞ח הַנֵּ֣זֶר׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ רֹאשׁ֗וֹ וְאֶצְעָדָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ זְרֹע֔וֹ וָאֲבִיאֵ֥ם הֵֽנָּה׃ אֶל־ אֲדֹנִ֖י wā·’e·‘ĕ·mōḏ ‘ā·lāw wa·’ă·mō·ṯə·ṯê·hū kî yā·ḏa‘·tî kî ’a·ḥă·rê nip̄·lōw lō yiḥ·yeh wā·’eq·qaḥ han·nê·zer ’ă·šer ‘al- rō·šōw wə·’eṣ·‘ā·ḏāh ’ă·šer ‘al- zə·rō·‘ōw wā·’ă·ḇî·’êm hên·nāh ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nîWLC · 10

Then David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and all the men who [were] with him did the same.

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤁𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤂𐤌

דָּוִ֛ד וַיַּחֲזֵ֥ק בִּבְגָדוֹ וַיִּקְרָעֵ֑ם כָּל־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃ וְגַ֥ם dā·wiḏ way·ya·ḥă·zêq biḇ·ḡå̄·ḏō way·yiq·rā·‘êm kāl- hā·’ă·nā·šîm ’ă·šer ’it·tōw wə·ḡamWLC · 11

They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son… Jonathan, and for the people of the LORD… and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

וַֽיִּסְפְּדוּ֙ וַיִּבְכּ֔וּ וַיָּצֻ֖מוּ עַד־ הָעָ֑רֶב עַל־ שָׁא֞וּל וְעַל־ בְּנ֗וֹ וְעַל־ יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן עַ֤ם יְהוָה֙ וְעַל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י נָפְל֖וּ בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ס way·yis·pə·ḏū way·yiḇ·kū way·yā·ṣu·mū ‘aḏ- hā·‘ā·reḇ ‘al- šā·’ūl wə·‘al- bə·nōw wə·‘al- yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān ‘am Yah·weh wə·‘al- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kî nā·p̄ə·lū be·ḥā·reḇWLC · 12

And David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report…, “Where… are you from?” “I am the son… of a foreigner,” he answered. “I am an Amalekite.”

דָּוִ֗ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ הַנַּ֙עַר֙ הַמַּגִּ֣יד ל֔וֹ אֵ֥י מִזֶּ֖ה אָ֑תָּה בֶּן־ אִ֛ישׁ גֵּ֥ר וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹֽכִי׃ עֲמָלֵקִ֖י dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer ’el- han·na·‘ar ham·mag·gîḏ lōw ’ê miz·zeh ’āt·tāh ben- ’îš gêr way·yō·mer ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ă·mā·lê·qîWLC · 13

So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤇

דָּוִ֑ד וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו אֵ֚יךְ לֹ֣א יָרֵ֔אתָ לִשְׁלֹ֙חַ֙ יָֽדְךָ֔ לְשַׁחֵ֖ת אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ מְשִׁ֥יחַ dā·wiḏ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ’êḵ lō yā·rê·ṯā liš·lō·aḥ yā·ḏə·ḵā lə·ša·ḥêṯ ’eṯ- Yah·weh mə·šî·aḥWLC · 14

Then David summoned one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him!” So [the young man] struck him down, and he died.

דָוִ֗ד וַיִּקְרָ֣א לְאַחַד֙ מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר גַּ֣שׁ פְּגַע־ בּ֑וֹ וַיַּכֵּ֖הוּ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ ḏā·wiḏ way·yiq·rā lə·’a·ḥaḏ mê·han·nə·‘ā·rîm way·yō·mer gaš pə·ḡa‘- bōw way·yak·kê·hū way·yā·mōṯWLC · 15

For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood [be] on your own head because your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I killed the LORD’s anointed.’”

David’s Song for Saul and Jonathan

Then David took up this lament for Saul… and his son Jonathan,

𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍

דָּוִ֔ד וַיְקֹנֵ֣ן אֶת־ הַזֹּ֑את הַקִּינָ֖ה עַל־ שָׁא֖וּל וְעַל־ בְּנֽוֹ׃ יְהוֹנָתָ֥ן dā·wiḏ way·qō·nên ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ haq·qî·nāh ‘al- šā·’ūl wə·‘al- bə·nōw yə·hō·w·nā·ṯānWLC · 17

and he ordered that the sons of Judah be taught [the Song of] the Bow… It is written in the Book of Jashar:

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בְּנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֖ה לְלַמֵּ֥ד קָ֑שֶׁת הִנֵּ֥ה כְתוּבָ֖ה עַל־ סֵ֥פֶר הַיָּשָֽׁר׃ way·yō·mer bə·nê- yə·hū·ḏāh lə·lam·mêḏ qā·šeṯ hin·nêh ḵə·ṯū·ḇāh ‘al- sê·p̄er hay·yā·šārWLC · 18

“Your glory, O Israel, lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen!

Tell [it] not in Gath; proclaim [it] not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines… rejoice, and the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.

O mountains of Gilboa, may you have no dew… or rain, no fields [yielding] offerings [of grain]. For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not retreat…, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.

Saul and Jonathan, beloved and delightful in life, were not divided in death. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.
