Chapter 2

Hannah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving

At that time Hannah… prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.

𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤑 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤉 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤊

חַנָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל לִבִּי֙ עָלַ֤ץ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה קַרְנִ֖י רָ֥מָה בַּֽיהוָ֑ה פִּי֙ רָ֤חַב עַל־ א֣וֹיְבַ֔י כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃ ḥan·nāh wat·tō·mar wat·tiṯ·pal·lêl lib·bî ‘ā·laṣ Yah·weh qar·nî rā·māh Yah·weh pî rā·ḥaḇ ‘al- ’ō·wy·ḇay kî śā·maḥ·tî bî·šū·‘ā·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 1

There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, [there is] no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.

𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤊𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤑𐤅𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅

אֵין־ קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ ’ên- qā·ḏō·wōš Yah·weh kî ’ên bil·te·ḵā wə·’ên ṣūr kê·lō·hê·nūWLC · 2

Do not boast… so proudly…, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed.

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤕𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤄 𐤏𐤕𐤒 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤕𐤊𐤍𐤅

אַל־ תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה עָתָ֖ק יֵצֵ֥א מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ וְלֹא עֲלִלֽוֹת׃ נִתְכְּנ֖וּ ’al- tar·bū ṯə·ḏab·bə·rū gə·ḇō·hāh ḡə·ḇō·hāh ‘ā·ṯāq yê·ṣê mip·pî·ḵem kî Yah·weh ’êl dê·‘ō·wṯ wə·lō ‘ă·li·lō·wṯ niṯ·kə·nūWLC · 3

The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength.

𐤒𐤔𐤕 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤋

קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל׃ qe·šeṯ gib·bō·rîm ḥat·tîm wə·niḵ·šā·lîm ’ā·zə·rū ḥā·yilWLC · 4

The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more… The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.

𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤃𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤒𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤋𐤋𐤄

שְׂבֵעִ֤ים נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד־ עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃ śə·ḇê·‘îm niś·kā·rū bal·le·ḥem ū·rə·‘ê·ḇîm ḥā·ḏêl·lū ‘aḏ- ‘ă·qā·rāh yā·lə·ḏāh šiḇ·‘āh wə·rab·baṯ bā·nîm ’um·lā·lāhWLC · 5

The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋

יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל׃ Yah·weh mê·mîṯ ū·mə·ḥay·yeh mō·w·rîḏ šə·’ō·wl way·yā·‘alWLC · 6

The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤐 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤌

יְהוָ֖ה מוֹרִ֣ישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁ֑יר מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף־ מְרוֹמֵֽם׃ Yah·weh mō·w·rîš ū·ma·‘ă·šîr maš·pîl ’ap̄- mə·rō·w·mêmWLC · 7

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats [them] among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.

מֵקִ֨ים דָּ֗ל מֵעָפָ֜ר יָרִ֣ים אֶבְי֔וֹן מֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙ לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם־ נְדִיבִ֔ים יַנְחִלֵ֑ם וְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד כִּ֤י מְצֻ֣קֵי אֶ֔רֶץ לַֽיהוָה֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיָּ֥שֶׁת תֵּבֵֽל׃ mê·qîm dāl mê·‘ā·p̄ār yā·rîm ’eḇ·yō·wn mê·’aš·pōṯ lə·hō·wō·šîḇ ‘im- nə·ḏî·ḇîm yan·ḥi·lêm wə·ḵis·sê ḵā·ḇō·wḏ kî mə·ṣu·qê ’e·reṣ Yah·weh ‘ă·lê·hem way·yā·šeṯ tê·ḇêlWLC · 8

He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.

𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤂𐤁𐤓

יִשְׁמֹ֔ר רַגְלֵ֤י חֲסִידוֹ וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים יִדָּ֑מּוּ בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ כִּֽי־ בְכֹ֖חַ לֹ֥א אִֽישׁ׃ יִגְבַּר־ yiš·mōr raḡ·lê ḥă·sī·ḏō ū·rə·šā·‘îm yid·dām·mū ba·ḥō·šeḵ kî- ḇə·ḵō·aḥ lō ’îš yiḡ·bar-WLC · 9

Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤐𐤎𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤆 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤅𐤐

מְרִיבוֹ יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ יַרְעֵ֔ם בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם עָלוֹ יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי־ אָ֑רֶץ וְיִתֶּן־ עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃פ mə·rī·ḇō Yah·weh yê·ḥat·tū yar·‘êm baš·šā·ma·yim ʿå̄·lō Yah·weh yā·ḏîn ’ap̄·sê- ’ā·reṣ wə·yit·ten- ‘ōz lə·mal·kōw wə·yā·rêm qe·ren mə·šî·ḥōwWLC · 10

Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,… but the boy… began ministering to the LORD before Eli the priest.

𐤀𐤋𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤌𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍

אֶלְקָנָ֛ה וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ בֵּית֑וֹ הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל־ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ ’el·qā·nāh way·yê·leḵ bê·ṯōw hā·rā·mā·ṯāh ‘al- wə·han·na·‘ar hā·yāh mə·šā·rêṯ ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’eṯ- pə·nê ‘ê·lî hak·kō·hênWLC · 11

Eli’s Wicked Sons

Now the sons of Eli were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD

𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וּבְנֵ֥י עֵלִ֖י בְלִיָּ֑עַל בְּנֵ֣י לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ ū·ḇə·nê ‘ê·lî ḇə·lî·yā·‘al bə·nê lō yā·ḏə·‘ū ’eṯ- Yah·wehWLC · 12

or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged… meat fork while the meat was boiling

𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤋𐤂 𐤄𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤔𐤋

וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים אֶת־ הָעָ֑ם כָּל־ אִ֞ישׁ זֹבֵ֣חַ זֶ֗בַח נַ֤עַר הַכֹּהֵן֙ וּבָ֨א שְׁלֹ֥שׁ־ הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ וְהַמַּזְלֵ֛ג הַבָּשָׂ֔ר כְּבַשֵּׁ֣ל ū·miš·paṭ hak·kō·hă·nîm ’eṯ- hā·‘ām kāl- ’îš zō·ḇê·aḥ ze·ḇaḥ na·‘ar hak·kō·hên ū·ḇā šə·lōš- haš·šin·na·yim bə·yā·ḏōw wə·ham·maz·lêḡ hab·bā·śār kə·ḇaš·šêlWLC · 13

and plunge [it] into the pan or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came… to Shiloh.

𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤐𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤆𐤋𐤂 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤄

וְהִכָּ֨ה בַכִּיּ֜וֹר א֣וֹ בַדּ֗וּד א֤וֹ בַקַּלַּ֙חַת֙ א֣וֹ בַפָּר֔וּר הַכֹּהֵ֖ן יִקַּ֥ח בּ֑וֹ כֹּ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר הַמַּזְלֵ֔ג יַעֲלֶ֣ה כָּ֚כָה יַעֲשׂ֣וּ לְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַבָּאִ֥ים שָׁ֖ם בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃ wə·hik·kāh ḇak·kî·yō·wr ’ōw ḇad·dūḏ ’ōw ḇaq·qal·la·ḥaṯ ’ōw ḇap·pā·rūr hak·kō·hên yiq·qaḥ bōw kōl ’ă·šer ham·maz·lêḡ ya·‘ă·leh kā·ḵāh ya·‘ă·śū lə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl hab·bā·’îm šām bə·ši·lōhWLC · 14

Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”

𐤂𐤌 𐤁𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤉𐤒𐤈𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤑𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤁𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤉

גַּם֮ בְּטֶרֶם֮ הַחֵלֶב֒ יַקְטִר֣וּן אֶת־ נַ֣עַר הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וּבָ֣א׀ וְאָמַר֙ לָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֹּבֵ֔חַ תְּנָ֣ה לַכֹּהֵ֑ן בָשָׂ֔ר לִצְל֖וֹת וְלֹֽא־ יִקַּ֧ח מְבֻשָּׁ֖ל בָּשָׂ֥ר מִמְּךָ֛ כִּ֥י אִם־ חָֽי׃ gam bə·ṭe·rem ha·ḥê·leḇ yaq·ṭi·rūn ’eṯ- na·‘ar hak·kō·hên ū·ḇā wə·’ā·mar lā·’îš haz·zō·ḇê·aḥ tə·nāh lak·kō·hên ḇā·śār liṣ·lō·wṯ wə·lō- yiq·qaḥ mə·ḇuš·šāl bā·śār mim·mə·ḵā kî ’im- ḥāyWLC · 15

And [if] any man said to him, “The fat must be burned… first; then you may take… whatever you want,” the servant would reply “No, you must give [it to me] right now. If you refuse, I will take [it] by force!”

𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤒𐤈𐤓 𐤉𐤒𐤈𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤒𐤇 𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊 𐤕𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤄

הָאִ֗ישׁ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו הַחֵ֔לֶב קַטֵּ֨ר יַקְטִיר֤וּן כַּיּוֹם֙ וְקַ֨ח־ לְךָ֔ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ תְּאַוֶּ֖ה וְאָמַ֥ר׀ לוֹ לֹ֖א כִּ֚י תִתֵּ֔ן עַתָּ֣ה וְאִם־ לָקַ֥חְתִּי בְחָזְקָֽה׃ hā·’îš way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw ha·ḥê·leḇ qaṭ·ṭêr yaq·ṭî·rūn kay·yō·wm wə·qaḥ- lə·ḵā ka·’ă·šer nap̄·še·ḵā tə·’aw·weh wə·’ā·mar lō lō kî ṯit·tên ‘at·tāh wə·’im- lā·qaḥ·tî ḇə·ḥā·zə·qāhWLC · 16

Thus the sin of these young men was severe… in the sight of the LORD, for they {were treating} the LORD’s offering with contempt. -

𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤍𐤇𐤕 𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤅 𐤀𐤕

חַטַּ֧את הַנְּעָרִ֛ים וַתְּהִ֨י גְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹ֖ד אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים יְהוָֽה׃ מִנְחַ֥ת נִֽאֲצוּ֙ אֵ֖ת ḥaṭ·ṭaṯ han·nə·‘ā·rîm wat·tə·hî gə·ḏō·w·lāh mə·’ōḏ ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh kî hā·’ă·nā·šîm Yah·weh min·ḥaṯ ni·’ă·ṣū ’êṯWLC · 17

Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD— a boy wearing a linen ephod.

𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤇𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤐𐤅𐤃

וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר בָּֽד׃ אֵפ֥וֹד ū·šə·mū·’êl mə·šā·rêṯ ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh na·‘ar ḥā·ḡūr bāḏ ’ê·p̄ō·wḏWLC · 18

Each year… his mother would make him a little robe and bring [it] to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.

𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤆𐤁𐤇

And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD. Then they would go home.

So the LORD attended to Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

Now Eli was very old, and he heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

“Why are you doing these things?” [Eli] said to [his sons]. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.

No, my sons;… [it is] not a good report I hear circulating among the LORD’s people.

אַ֖ל בָּנָ֑י כִּ֠י לֽוֹא־ טוֹבָ֤ה הַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָנֹכִ֣י שֹׁמֵ֔עַ מַעֲבִרִ֖ים יְהוָֽה׃ עַם־ ’al bā·nāy kî lō·w- ṭō·w·ḇāh haš·šə·mu·‘āh ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî šō·mê·a‘ ma·‘ă·ḇi·rîm Yah·weh ‘am-WLC · 24

If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen… to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.

And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor… with the LORD… and with man.

A Prophecy against the House of Eli

Then a man of God came to Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself… to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?

And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected [your father] [to be] My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the food offerings vvv of the Israelites.

Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for [My] dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’

לָ֣מָּה תִבְעֲט֗וּ בְּזִבְחִי֙ וּבְמִנְחָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּ֖יתִי מָע֑וֹן וַתְּכַבֵּ֤ד אֶת־ בָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ מִמֶּ֔נִּי לְהַבְרִֽיאֲכֶ֗ם מֵרֵאשִׁ֛ית כָּל־ מִנְחַ֥ת לְעַמִּֽי׃ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל lām·māh ṯiḇ·‘ă·ṭū bə·ziḇ·ḥî ū·ḇə·min·ḥā·ṯî ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî mā·‘ō·wn wat·tə·ḵab·bêḏ ’eṯ- bā·ne·ḵā mim·men·nî lə·haḇ·rî·’ă·ḵem mê·rê·šîṯ kāl- min·ḥaṯ lə·‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 29

Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me vvv forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.

לָכֵ֗ן יְהוָה֮ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ נְאֻם־ אָמ֣וֹר אָמַ֔רְתִּי בֵּֽיתְךָ֙ וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ יִתְהַלְּכ֥וּ לְפָנַ֖י עַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם וְעַתָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ נְאֻם־ חָלִ֣ילָה לִּ֔י כִּֽי־ אֲכַבֵּ֖ד מְכַבְּדַ֥י וּבֹזַ֥י יֵקָֽלּוּ׃ lā·ḵên Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl nə·’um- ’ā·mō·wr ’ā·mar·tî bê·ṯə·ḵā ū·ḇêṯ ’ā·ḇî·ḵā yiṯ·hal·lə·ḵū lə·p̄ā·nay ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām wə·‘at·tāh Yah·weh nə·’um- ḥā·lî·lāh lî kî- ’ă·ḵab·bêḏ mə·ḵab·bə·ḏay ū·ḇō·zay yê·qāl·lūWLC · 30

Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no one in it will reach old age.

הִנֵּה֙ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִ֔ים וְגָֽדַעְתִּי֙ אֶת־ זְרֹ֣עֲךָ֔ וְאֶת־ זְרֹ֖עַ אָבִ֑יךָ בֵּ֣ית בְּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃ מִֽהְי֥וֹת זָקֵ֖ן hin·nêh yā·mîm bā·’îm wə·ḡā·ḏa‘·tî ’eṯ- zə·rō·‘ă·ḵā wə·’eṯ- zə·rō·a‘ ’ā·ḇî·ḵā bêṯ bə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā mih·yō·wṯ zā·qênWLC · 31

You will see distress [in My] dwelling place. Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house vvv will ever again reach old age.

וְהִבַּטְתָּ֙ צַ֣ר מָע֔וֹן בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ יֵיטִ֖יב אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹֽא־ בְּבֵיתְךָ֖ כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ יִהְיֶ֥ה זָקֵ֛ן wə·hib·baṭ·tā ṣar mā·‘ō·wn bə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- yê·ṭîḇ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl wə·lō- bə·ḇê·ṯə·ḵā kāl- hay·yā·mîm yih·yeh zā·qênWLC · 32

And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, {I will cause} your eyes to fail - and your heart to grieve. All your descendants… will die [by the sword] of men.

וְאִ֗ישׁ לְךָ֙ לֹֽא־ אַכְרִ֤ית מֵעִ֣ם מִזְבְּחִ֔י עֵינֶ֖יךָ לְכַלּ֥וֹת אֶת־ אֶת־ נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְלַאֲדִ֣יב וְכָל־ מַרְבִּ֥ית בֵּיתְךָ֖ יָמ֥וּתוּ אֲנָשִֽׁים׃ wə·’îš lə·ḵā lō- ’aḵ·rîṯ mê·‘im miz·bə·ḥî ‘ê·ne·ḵā lə·ḵal·lō·wṯ ’eṯ- ’eṯ- nap̄·še·ḵā wə·la·’ă·ḏîḇ wə·ḵāl mar·bîṯ bê·ṯə·ḵā yā·mū·ṯū ’ă·nā·šîmWLC · 33

And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons… Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.

וְזֶה־ הָא֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָבֹא֙ לְּךָ֣ אֶל־ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֔יךָ אֶל־ חָפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָ֑ס שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ יָמ֥וּתוּ אֶחָ֖ד בְּי֥וֹם wə·zeh- hā·’ō·wṯ ’ă·šer yā·ḇō lə·ḵā ’el- šə·nê ḇā·ne·ḵā ’el- ḥā·p̄ə·nî ū·p̄î·nə·ḥās šə·nê·hem yā·mū·ṯū ’e·ḥāḏ bə·yō·wmWLC · 34

Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time…

וַהֲקִימֹתִ֥י לִי֙ נֶאֱמָ֔ן כֹּהֵ֣ן יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּלְבָבִ֥י וּבְנַפְשִׁ֖י וּבָנִ֤יתִי לוֹ֙ נֶאֱמָ֔ן בַּ֣יִת וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לִפְנֵֽי־ מְשִׁיחִ֖י כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ wa·hă·qî·mō·ṯî lî ne·’ĕ·mān kō·hên ya·‘ă·śeh ka·’ă·šer bil·ḇā·ḇî ū·ḇə·nap̄·šî ū·ḇā·nî·ṯî lōw ne·’ĕ·mān ba·yiṯ wə·hiṯ·hal·lēḵ lip̄·nê- mə·šî·ḥî kāl- hay·yā·mîmWLC · 35

And everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a morsel of bread, pleading, “Please appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
