Chapter 1

Naomi Becomes a Widow

In the days when the judges ruled,… there was a famine in the land. And a certain man vvv from Bethlehem in Judah, with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the land of Moab. -

The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah, and they entered the land of Moab and settled there.

Then Naomi’s husband Elimelech died, and she was left with her two sons,

נָעֳמִ֑י אִ֣ישׁ אֱלִימֶ֖לֶךְ וַיָּ֥מָת הִ֖יא וַתִּשָּׁאֵ֥ר וּשְׁנֵ֥י בָנֶֽיהָ׃ nā·‘o·mî ’îš ’ĕ·lî·me·leḵ way·yā·māṯ hî wat·tiš·šā·’êr ū·šə·nê ḇā·ne·hāWLC · 3

who took Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the other named Ruth. And after they had lived in Moab about ten years,

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌 𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌

both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and without her husband.

Ruth’s Loyalty to Naomi

When [Naomi] heard… in Moab that the LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.

כִּ֤י שָֽׁמְעָה֙ בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה מוֹאָ֔ב כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ פָקַ֤ד אֶת־ עַמּ֔וֹ לָתֵ֥ת לָהֶ֖ם לָֽחֶם׃ הִיא֙ וְכַלֹּתֶ֔יהָ וַתָּ֤קָם וַתָּ֖שָׁב מִשְּׂדֵ֣י מוֹאָ֑ב kî šā·mə·‘āh biś·ḏêh mō·w·’āḇ kî- Yah·weh p̄ā·qaḏ ’eṯ- ‘am·mōw lā·ṯêṯ lā·hem lā·ḥem hî wə·ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā wat·tā·qām wat·tā·šāḇ miś·śə·ḏê mō·w·’āḇWLC · 6

Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left… the place where she had been [living]… and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.

עִמָּ֑הּ וּשְׁתֵּ֥י כַלֹּתֶ֖יהָ וַתֵּצֵ֗א מִן־ הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיְתָה־ שָׁ֔מָּה וַתֵּלַ֣כְנָה בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ לָשׁ֖וּב אֶל־ אֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָֽה׃ ‘im·māh ū·šə·tê ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā wat·tê·ṣê min- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer hā·yə·ṯāh- šām·māh wat·tê·laḵ·nāh ḇad·de·reḵ lā·šūḇ ’el- ’e·reṣ yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 7

Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.

נָעֳמִי֙ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לִשְׁתֵּ֣י כַלֹּתֶ֔יהָ לֵ֣כְנָה שֹּׁ֔בְנָה אִשָּׁ֖ה אִמָּ֑הּ לְבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֤ה יַעֲשֶׂה עִמָּכֶם֙ חֶ֔סֶד כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֛ם עִם־ הַמֵּתִ֖ים וְעִמָּדִֽי׃ nā·‘o·mî wat·tō·mer liš·tê ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā lê·ḵə·nāh šō·ḇə·nāh ’iš·šāh ’im·māh lə·ḇêṯ Yah·weh ya·ʿă·śɛh ‘im·mā·ḵem ḥe·seḏ ka·’ă·šer ‘ă·śî·ṯem ‘im- ham·mê·ṯîm wə·‘im·mā·ḏîWLC · 8

May the LORD enable each of you to find rest in the home of your new husband.” And she kissed them as they wept aloud…

יְהוָה֙ יִתֵּ֤ן אִשָּׁ֖ה לָכֶ֔ם וּמְצֶ֣אןָ מְנוּחָ֔ה בֵּ֣ית אִישָׁ֑הּ וַתִּשַּׁ֣ק לָהֶ֔ן וַתִּבְכֶּֽינָה׃ וַתִּשֶּׂ֥אנָה קוֹלָ֖ן Yah·weh yit·tên ’iš·šāh lā·ḵem ū·mə·ṣe·nā mə·nū·ḥāh bêṯ ’î·šāh wat·tiš·šaq lā·hen wat·tiḇ·ke·nāh wat·tiś·śe·nāh qō·w·lānWLC · 9

and said “Surely we will return with you to your people.”

וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה־ לָּ֑הּ כִּי־ נָשׁ֖וּב אִתָּ֥ךְ לְעַמֵּֽךְ׃ wat·tō·mar·nāh- lāh kî- nā·šūḇ ’it·tāḵ lə·‘am·mêḵWLC · 10

But Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? [Are] there still sons vvv in my womb to become your husbands?

𐤍𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌

נָעֳמִי֙ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר שֹׁ֣בְנָה בְנֹתַ֔י לָ֥מָּה תֵלַ֖כְנָה עִמִּ֑י הַֽעֽוֹד־ בָנִים֙ לִ֤י בְּֽמֵעַ֔י וְהָי֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם לַאֲנָשִֽׁים׃ nā·‘o·mî wat·tō·mer šō·ḇə·nāh ḇə·nō·ṯay lām·māh ṯê·laḵ·nāh ‘im·mî ha·‘ō·wḏ- ḇā·nîm lî bə·mê·‘ay wə·hā·yū lā·ḵem la·’ă·nā·šîmWLC · 11

Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me to have a husband… tonight and to bear sons,

שֹׁ֤בְנָה בְנֹתַי֙ לֵ֔כְןָ כִּ֥י זָקַ֖נְתִּי מִהְי֣וֹת לְאִ֑ישׁ כִּ֤י אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙ יֶשׁ־ תִקְוָ֔ה לִ֣י הָיִ֤יתִי לְאִ֔ישׁ וְגַ֖ם הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ גַּ֣ם יָלַ֥דְתִּי בָנִֽים׃ šō·ḇə·nāh ḇə·nō·ṯay lê·ḵə·nā kî zā·qan·tî mih·yō·wṯ lə·’îš kî ’ā·mar·tî yeš- ṯiq·wāh lî hā·yî·ṯî lə·’îš wə·ḡam hal·lay·lāh gam yā·laḏ·tî ḇā·nîmWLC · 12

would you wait for them to grow up?… Would you refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, it is much more bitter… for me than for you, because the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.”

תְּשַׂבֵּ֗רְנָה הֲלָהֵ֣ן׀ עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִגְדָּ֔לוּ הֲלָהֵן֙ תֵּֽעָגֵ֔נָה לְבִלְתִּ֖י הֱי֣וֹת לְאִ֑ישׁ אַ֣ל בְּנֹתַ֗י כִּֽי־ מַר־ מְאֹד֙ לִ֤י מִכֶּ֔ם כִּֽי־ יַד־ יְהוָֽה׃ יָצְאָ֥ה בִ֖י tə·śab·bê·rə·nāh hă·lā·hên ‘aḏ ’ă·šer yiḡ·dā·lū hă·lā·hên tê·‘ā·ḡê·nāh lə·ḇil·tî hĕ·yō·wṯ lə·’îš ’al bə·nō·ṯay kî- mar- mə·’ōḏ lî mik·kem kî- yaḏ- Yah·weh yā·ṣə·’āh ḇîWLC · 13

Again they wept aloud…, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law {goodbye}, but Ruth clung to her.

ע֑וֹד וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ינָה וַתִּשֶּׂ֣נָה קוֹלָ֔ן עָרְפָּה֙ וַתִּשַּׁ֤ק לַחֲמוֹתָ֔הּ וְר֖וּת דָּ֥בְקָה בָּֽהּ׃ ‘ō·wḏ wat·tiḇ·ke·nāh wat·tiś·śe·nāh qō·w·lān ‘ā·rə·pāh wat·tiš·šaq la·ḥă·mō·w·ṯāh wə·rūṯ dā·ḇə·qāh bāhWLC · 14

“Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her gods; follow [her] back home…”

הִנֵּה֙ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר יְבִמְתֵּ֔ךְ שָׁ֣בָה אֶל־ עַמָּ֖הּ וְאֶל־ אֱלֹהֶ֑יהָ שׁ֖וּבִי אַחֲרֵ֥י יְבִמְתֵּֽךְ׃ hin·nêh wat·tō·mer yə·ḇim·têḵ šā·ḇāh ’el- ‘am·māh wə·’el- ’ĕ·lō·he·hā šū·ḇî ’a·ḥă·rê yə·ḇim·têḵWLC · 15

But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you [or] to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.

Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD vvv punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”

The Return to Bethlehem

So [Naomi and Ruth] traveled until they came to Bethlehem. When they entered vvv Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women [of the town] exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”

“Do not call me Naomi, she replied… “Call me Mara, because the Almighty has dealt quite bitterly… with me.

I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? After all, the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me.”

So Naomi returned from the land of Moab with… her daughter-in-law Ruth the Moabitess. And they arrived vvv in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
