Chapter 8
Gideon Defeats Zebah and Zalmunna

Then the men of Ephraim said to [Gideon], “Why… have you done this to us? Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they contended with him violently…

אִ֣ישׁ אֶפְרַ֗יִם וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו מָֽה־ הַדָּבָ֤ר עָשִׂ֣יתָ הַזֶּה֙ לָּ֔נוּ לְבִלְתִּי֙ קְרֹ֣אות לָ֔נוּ כִּ֥י הָלַ֖כְתָּ לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם בְּמִדְיָ֑ן וַיְרִיב֥וּן אִתּ֖וֹ בְּחָזְקָֽה׃ ’îš ’ep̄·ra·yim way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw māh- had·dā·ḇār ‘ā·śî·ṯā haz·zeh lā·nū lə·ḇil·tî qə·rō·wṯ lā·nū kî hā·laḵ·tā lə·hil·lā·ḥêm bə·miḏ·yān way·rî·ḇūn ’it·tōw bə·ḥā·zə·qāh — WLC · 1

But [Gideon] answered them, “Now what have I accomplished compared to you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer?

God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian, into your hand. What was I able to do compared to you?”… When he had said… this, their anger against him subsided.

אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת־ נָתַ֨ן עֹרֵ֣ב וְאֶת־ זְאֵ֔ב שָׂרֵ֤י מִדְיָן֙ בְּיֶדְכֶם֩ אֶת־ וּמַה־ יָּכֹ֖לְתִּי עֲשׂ֣וֹת כָּכֶ֑ם אָ֗ז בְּדַבְּר֖וֹ הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃ רוּחָם֙ מֵֽעָלָ֔יו רָפְתָ֤ה ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- nā·ṯan ‘ō·rêḇ wə·’eṯ- zə·’êḇ śā·rê miḏ·yān bə·yeḏ·ḵem ’eṯ- ū·mah- yā·ḵō·lə·tî ‘ă·śō·wṯ kā·ḵem ’āz bə·ḏab·bə·rōw had·dā·ḇār haz·zeh rū·ḥām mê·‘ā·lāw rā·p̄ə·ṯāh — WLC · 3

Then Gideon and his three hundred men came to the Jordan [and] crossed it…, exhausted yet still in pursuit.

גִדְע֖וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשׁ־ מֵא֤וֹת הָאִישׁ֙ וַיָּבֹ֥א הַיַּרְדֵּ֑נָה עֹבֵ֣ר ה֗וּא עֲיֵפִ֖ים וְרֹדְפִֽים׃ ḡiḏ·‘ō·wn ’ă·šer ’it·tōw ū·šə·lōš- mê·’ō·wṯ hā·’îš way·yā·ḇō hay·yar·dê·nāh ‘ō·ḇêr hū ‘ă·yê·p̄îm wə·rō·ḏə·p̄îm — WLC · 4

So [Gideon] said to the men of Succoth, “Please give my troops - some bread, for they are exhausted, and I am still pursuing… Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לְאַנְשֵׁ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת נָא֙ תְּנוּ־ לָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּרַגְלָ֑י כִּכְּר֣וֹת לֶ֔חֶם כִּי־ הֵ֔ם עֲיֵפִ֣ים וְאָנֹכִ֗י רֹדֵ֛ף אַחֲרֵ֛י זֶ֥בַח וְצַלְמֻנָּ֖ע מַלְכֵ֥י מִדְיָֽן׃ way·yō·mer lə·’an·šê suk·kō·wṯ nā tə·nū- lā·‘ām ’ă·šer bə·raḡ·lāy kik·kə·rō·wṯ le·ḥem kî- hêm ‘ă·yê·p̄îm wə·’ā·nō·ḵî rō·ḏêp̄ ’a·ḥă·rê ze·ḇaḥ wə·ṣal·mun·nā‘ mal·ḵê miḏ·yān — WLC · 5

But the leaders of Succoth asked, “[Are] the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤎𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤐 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤊
שָׂרֵ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הֲ֠כַף זֶ֧בַח וְצַלְמֻנָּ֛ע עַתָּ֖ה בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ כִּֽי־ נִתֵּ֥ן לָֽחֶם׃ לִֽצְבָאֲךָ֖ śā·rê suk·kō·wṯ way·yō·mer hă·ḵap̄ ze·ḇaḥ wə·ṣal·mun·nā‘ ‘at·tāh bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā kî- nit·tên lā·ḥem liṣ·ḇā·’ă·ḵā — WLC · 6

“Very well,” Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness…!”

לָכֵ֗ן גִּדְע֔וֹן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ בְּתֵ֧ת זֶ֥בַח וְאֶת־ צַלְמֻנָּ֖ע בְּיָדִ֑י וְדַשְׁתִּי֙ אֶת־ בְּשַׂרְכֶ֔ם אֶת־ קוֹצֵ֥י הַֽבַּרְקֳנִֽים׃ הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר וְאֶת־ lā·ḵên giḏ·‘ō·wn way·yō·mer Yah·weh ’eṯ- bə·ṯêṯ ze·ḇaḥ wə·’eṯ- ṣal·mun·nā‘ bə·yā·ḏî wə·ḏaš·tî ’eṯ- bə·śar·ḵem ’eṯ- qō·w·ṣê hab·bar·qo·nîm ham·miḏ·bār wə·’eṯ- — WLC · 7

From there he went up to Penuel and asked the same from them, but the men of Penuel gave the same response as the men of Succoth.

מִשָּׁם֙ וַיַּ֤עַל פְּנוּאֵ֔ל וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר כָּזֹ֑את אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם אַנְשֵׁ֣י פְנוּאֵ֔ל וַיַּעֲנ֤וּ אוֹתוֹ֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָנ֖וּ אַנְשֵׁ֥י סֻכּֽוֹת׃ miš·šām way·ya·‘al pə·nū·’êl way·ḏab·bêr kā·zōṯ ’ă·lê·hem ’an·šê p̄ə·nū·’êl way·ya·‘ă·nū ’ō·w·ṯōw ka·’ă·šer ‘ā·nū ’an·šê suk·kō·wṯ — WLC · 8

So [Gideon] told the men of Penuel,… “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower!”

גַּם־ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר לְאַנְשֵׁ֥י פְנוּאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר בְּשׁוּבִ֣י בְשָׁל֔וֹם אֶתֹּ֖ץ אֶת־ הַזֶּֽה׃פ הַמִּגְדָּ֥ל gam- way·yō·mer lə·’an·šê p̄ə·nū·’êl lê·mōr bə·šū·ḇî ḇə·šā·lō·wm ’et·tōṣ ’eṯ- haz·zeh ham·miḡ·dāl — WLC · 9

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of about fifteen… thousand [men]— all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen… had already fallen.
𐤅𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤒𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤋𐤐 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤌
וְזֶ֨בַח וְצַלְמֻנָּ֜ע בַּקַּרְקֹ֗ר עִמָּם֙ וּמַחֲנֵיהֶ֤ם כַּחֲמֵ֤שֶׁת עָשָׂר֙ אֶ֔לֶף כֹּ֚ל הַנּ֣וֹתָרִ֔ים מִכֹּ֖ל מַחֲנֵ֣ה בְנֵי־ קֶ֑דֶם מֵאָ֨ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חָֽרֶב׃ וְהַנֹּ֣פְלִ֔ים wə·ze·ḇaḥ wə·ṣal·mun·nā‘ baq·qar·qōr ‘im·mām ū·ma·ḥă·nê·hem ka·ḥă·mê·šeṯ ‘ā·śār ’e·lep̄ kōl han·nō·w·ṯā·rîm mik·kōl ma·ḥă·nêh ḇə·nê- qe·ḏem mê·’āh wə·‘eś·rîm ’e·lep̄ ’îš šō·lêp̄ ḥā·reḇ wə·han·nō·p̄ə·lîm — WLC · 10

And Gideon went up by way of the caravan… route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he attacked their army, [taking them] vvv by surprise.
𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤍𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤈𐤇
גִּדְע֗וֹן וַיַּ֣עַל הַשְּׁכוּנֵ֣י בָֽאֳהָלִ֔ים דֶּ֚רֶךְ מִקֶּ֥דֶם לְנֹ֖בַח וְיָגְבֳּהָ֑ה וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה הָ֥יָה בֶֽטַח׃ giḏ·‘ō·wn way·ya·‘al haš·šə·ḵū·nê ḇā·’o·hā·lîm de·reḵ miq·qe·ḏem lə·nō·ḇaḥ wə·yā·ḡə·bo·hāh way·yaḵ ’eṯ- ham·ma·ḥă·neh wə·ham·ma·ḥă·neh hā·yāh ḇe·ṭaḥ — WLC · 11

When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, [Gideon] pursued… and captured these two kings of Midian - -, routing their entire army.
𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤎𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄

After this, Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle along the Ascent of Heres.

גִּדְע֥וֹן בֶּן־ יוֹאָ֖שׁ וַיָּ֛שָׁב מִן־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה מִֽלְמַעֲלֵ֖ה הֶחָֽרֶס׃ giḏ·‘ō·wn ben- yō·w·’āš way·yā·šāḇ min- ham·mil·ḥā·māh mil·ma·‘ă·lêh he·ḥā·res — WLC · 13

There he captured a young man… of Succoth and interrogated him. The young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven… leaders and elders of Succoth.

וַיִּלְכָּד־ נַ֛עַר מֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י סֻכּ֖וֹת וַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֑הוּ וַיִּכְתֹּ֨ב אֵלָ֜יו אֶת־ שִׁבְעִ֥ים וְשִׁבְעָ֖ה אִֽישׁ׃ שָׂרֵ֤י וְאֶת־ זְקֵנֶ֔יהָ סֻכּוֹת֙ way·yil·kāḏ- na·‘ar mê·’an·šê suk·kō·wṯ way·yiš·’ā·lê·hū way·yiḵ·tōḇ ’ê·lāw ’eṯ- šiḇ·‘îm wə·šiḇ·‘āh ’îš śā·rê wə·’eṯ- zə·qê·ne·hā suk·kō·wṯ — WLC · 14

And [Gideon] went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘[Are] the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your weary men?’”

וַיָּבֹא֙ אֶל־ אַנְשֵׁ֣י סֻכּ֔וֹת וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֖ה זֶ֣בַח וְצַלְמֻנָּ֑ע אֲשֶׁר֩ חֵרַפְתֶּ֨ם אוֹתִ֜י לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲ֠כַף זֶ֣בַח וְצַלְמֻנָּ֤ע עַתָּה֙ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ כִּ֥י נִתֵּ֛ן לָֽחֶם׃ הַיְּעֵפִ֖ים לַאֲנָשֶׁ֥יךָ way·yā·ḇō ’el- ’an·šê suk·kō·wṯ way·yō·mer hin·nêh ze·ḇaḥ wə·ṣal·mun·nā‘ ’ă·šer ḥê·rap̄·tem ’ō·w·ṯî lê·mōr hă·ḵap̄ ze·ḇaḥ wə·ṣal·mun·nā‘ ‘at·tāh bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā kî nit·tên lā·ḥem hay·yə·‘ê·p̄îm la·’ă·nā·še·ḵā — WLC · 15

Then he took the elders of the city, and [using] the thorns and briers of the wilderness -, he disciplined the men of Succoth.

Next, [Gideon] asked… Zebah… and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?” “Men like you,”… they answered, “[each] one resembling the son of a king.”

“They were my brothers,” Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”

So he said to Jether, his firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.

Then the Israelites… said to Gideon, “Rule over us— you and your son… and grandson…— for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

But Gideon replied…, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son -. The LORD shall rule over you.”

The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700… [shekels], in addition to… the crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of Midian,… and the chains from the necks of their camels.

[From all this] Gideon made an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.

Forty Years of Peace

In this way Midian was subdued before the Israelites… and did not raise its head again. So the land had rest for forty years in the days of Gideon,

Gideon’s Death

Later, Gideon son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah vvv of the Abiezrites.
