Chapter 7

Gideon’s Army of Three Hundred

1

Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the men with him camped beside vvv the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤌𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤄

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men for Me to deliver Midian into their hands, lest Israel glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤉

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ גִּדְע֔וֹן אִתָּ֔ךְ רַ֗ב הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִתִּתִּ֥י מִדְיָ֖ן אֶת־ בְּיָדָ֑ם פֶּן־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יִתְפָּאֵ֨ר עָלַ֤י לֵאמֹ֔ר יָדִ֖י הוֹשִׁ֥יעָה לִּֽי׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- giḏ·‘ō·wn ’it·tāḵ raḇ hā·‘ām ’ă·šer mit·tit·tî miḏ·yān ’eṯ- bə·yā·ḏām pen- yiś·rā·’êl yiṯ·pā·’êr ‘ā·lay lê·mōr yā·ḏî hō·wō·šî·‘āh lîWLC · 2

Now, therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the men:… ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two… thousand [of them] turned back, but ten thousand remained.

נָ֜א וְעַתָּ֗ה קְרָ֨א בְּאָזְנֵ֤י הָעָם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מִֽי־ יָרֵ֣א וְחָרֵ֔ד יָשֹׁ֥ב וְיִצְפֹּ֖ר מֵהַ֣ר הַגִּלְעָ֑ד עֶשְׂרִ֤ים וּשְׁנַ֙יִם֙ אֶ֔לֶף מִן־ הָעָ֗ם וַיָּ֣שָׁב וַעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים נִשְׁאָֽרוּ׃ס nā wə·‘at·tāh qə·rā bə·’ā·zə·nê hā·‘ām lê·mōr mî- yā·rê wə·ḥā·rêḏ yā·šōḇ wə·yiṣ·pōr mê·har hag·gil·‘āḏ ‘eś·rîm ū·šə·na·yim ’e·lep̄ min- hā·‘ām way·yā·šāḇ wa·‘ă·śe·reṯ ’ă·lā·p̄îm niš·’ā·rūWLC · 3

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there… If I say to you, ‘This [one] shall go with you,’ he shall go… But if I say…, ‘This [one] shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ גִּדְע֗וֹן עוֹד֮ רָב֒ הָעָ֣ם הוֹרֵ֤ד אוֹתָם֙ אֶל־ הַמַּ֔יִם וְאֶצְרְפֶ֥נּוּ לְךָ֖ שָׁ֑ם וְהָיָ֡ה אֲשֶׁר֩ אֹמַ֨ר אֵלֶ֜יךָ זֶ֣ה׀ יֵלֵ֣ךְ אִתָּ֗ךְ ה֚וּא יֵלֵ֣ךְ אִתָּ֔ךְ וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁר־ אֹמַ֜ר אֵלֶ֗יךָ זֶ֚ה לֹא־ יֵלֵ֣ךְ עִמָּ֔ךְ ה֖וּא לֹ֥א יֵלֵֽךְ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- giḏ·‘ō·wn ‘ō·wḏ rāḇ hā·‘ām hō·w·rêḏ ’ō·w·ṯām ’el- ham·ma·yim wə·’eṣ·rə·p̄en·nū lə·ḵā šām wə·hā·yāh ’ă·šer ’ō·mar ’ê·le·ḵā zeh yê·lêḵ ’it·tāḵ hū yê·lêḵ ’it·tāḵ wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ō·mar ’ê·le·ḵā zeh lō- yê·lêḵ ‘im·māḵ hū lō yê·lêḵWLC · 4

So [Gideon] brought the men down to the water, and the LORD said to [him], “Separate - those who lap the water with their tongues… like… a dog from those who kneel… to drink.”

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤎 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤂 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤋𐤒 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤍 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤋𐤒 𐤄𐤊𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤏 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕

הָעָ֖ם וַיּ֥וֹרֶד אֶת־ אֶל־ הַמָּ֑יִםס יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ גִּדְע֗וֹן תַּצִּ֤יג אוֹתוֹ֙ לְבָ֔ד כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ יָלֹק֩ הַמַּ֜יִם בִּלְשׁוֹנ֨וֹ מִן־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר יָלֹ֣ק הַכֶּ֗לֶב וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ יִכְרַ֥ע עַל־ בִּרְכָּ֖יו לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ hā·‘ām way·yō·w·reḏ ’eṯ- ’el- ham·må̄·yi·ms Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- giḏ·‘ō·wn taṣ·ṣîḡ ’ō·w·ṯōw lə·ḇāḏ kōl ’ă·šer- yā·lōq ham·ma·yim bil·šō·w·nōw min- ka·’ă·šer yā·lōq hak·ke·leḇ wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- yiḵ·ra‘ ‘al- bir·kāw liš·tō·wṯWLC · 5

And the number of those who lapped [the water] with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others… knelt… to drink…

𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤊𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤎

מִסְפַּ֞ר הַֽמֲלַקְקִ֤ים בְּיָדָם֙ אֶל־ פִּיהֶ֔ם וַיְהִ֗י שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וְכֹל֙ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם כָּרְע֥וּ עַל־ בִּרְכֵיהֶ֖ם לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מָֽיִם׃ס mis·par ha·mă·laq·qîm bə·yā·ḏām ’el- pî·hem way·hî šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ’îš wə·ḵōl ye·ṯer hā·‘ām kā·rə·‘ū ‘al- bir·ḵê·hem liš·tō·wṯ mā·yimWLC · 6

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped [the water] I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others… are to go… home.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ גִּדְע֗וֹן בִּשְׁלֹשׁ֩ מֵא֨וֹת הָאִ֤ישׁ הַֽמֲלַקְקִים֙ אוֹשִׁ֣יעַ אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְנָתַתִּ֥י מִדְיָ֖ן אֶת־ בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וְכָל־ הָעָ֔ם יֵלְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- giḏ·‘ō·wn biš·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ hā·’îš ha·mă·laq·qîm ’ō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ·ḵem wə·nā·ṯat·tî miḏ·yān ’eṯ- bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām yê·lə·ḵū ’îš lim·qō·mōwWLC · 7

So Gideon sent… the rest of the Israelites… to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.

שִׁלַּח֙ אִ֣ישׁ כָּל־ אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לְאֹֽהָלָ֔יו הֶֽחֱזִ֑יק וּבִשְׁלֹשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת הָאִ֖ישׁ וַיִּקְח֣וּ אֶת־ בְּיָדָ֜ם וְאֵ֣ת צֵדָה֩ שׁוֹפְרֹֽתֵיהֶ֗ם הָעָ֨ם וְאֵ֨ת וּמַחֲנֵ֣ה מִדְיָ֔ן הָ֥יָה מִתַּ֥חַת ל֖וֹ בָּעֵֽמֶק׃פ šil·laḥ ’îš kāl- ’îš yiś·rā·’êl lə·’ō·hā·lāw he·ḥĕ·zîq ū·ḇiš·lōš- mê·’ō·wṯ hā·’îš way·yiq·ḥū ’eṯ- bə·yā·ḏām wə·’êṯ ṣê·ḏāh šō·wp̄·rō·ṯê·hem hā·‘ām wə·’êṯ ū·ma·ḥă·nêh miḏ·yān hā·yāh mit·ta·ḥaṯ lōw bā·‘ê·meqWLC · 8

The Sword of Gideon

  • That night the LORD said to [Gideon], “Get up [and] go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊

וַֽיְהִי֙ הַה֔וּא בַּלַּ֣יְלָה יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ ק֖וּם רֵ֣ד בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה כִּ֥י נְתַתִּ֖יו בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ way·hî ha·hū bal·lay·lāh Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw qūm rêḏ bam·ma·ḥă·neh kî nə·ṯat·tîw bə·yā·ḏe·ḵāWLC · 9

But if you are afraid to [do so], then go down to the camp… with your servant Purah

𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤓𐤃𐤕 𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤄

וְאִם־ אַתָּ֖ה יָרֵ֥א לָרֶ֑דֶת רֵ֥ד אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ אַתָּ֛ה נַעַרְךָ֖ וּפֻרָ֥ה wə·’im- ’at·tāh yā·rê lā·re·ḏeṯ rêḏ ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh ’at·tāh na·‘ar·ḵā ū·p̄u·rāhWLC · 10

and listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were [guarding] the camp.

𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄

וְשָֽׁמַעְתָּ֙ מַה־ יְדַבֵּ֔רוּ וְאַחַר֙ יָדֶ֔יךָ תֶּחֱזַ֣קְנָה וְיָרַדְתָּ֖ בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה הוּא֙ וַיֵּ֤רֶד וּפֻרָ֣ה נַעֲר֔וֹ אֶל־ קְצֵ֥ה הַחֲמֻשִׁ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ wə·šā·ma‘·tā mah- yə·ḏab·bê·rū wə·’a·ḥar yā·ḏe·ḵā te·ḥĕ·zaq·nāh wə·yā·raḏ·tā bam·ma·ḥă·neh hū way·yê·reḏ ū·p̄u·rāh na·‘ă·rōw ’el- qə·ṣêh ha·ḥă·mu·šîm ’ă·šer bam·ma·ḥă·nehWLC · 11

Now the Midianites, Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless… as the sand on the seashore…

𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤋𐤓𐤁 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤊𐤇𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤐𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤁

וּמִדְיָ֨ן וַעֲמָלֵ֤ק וְכָל־ בְּנֵי־ קֶ֙דֶם֙ נֹפְלִ֣ים בָּעֵ֔מֶק לָרֹ֑ב כָּאַרְבֶּ֖ה וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶם֙ אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֔ר כַּח֛וֹל שֶׁעַל־ שְׂפַ֥ת הַיָּ֖ם לָרֹֽב׃ ū·miḏ·yān wa·‘ă·mā·lêq wə·ḵāl bə·nê- qe·ḏem nō·p̄ə·lîm bā·‘ê·meq lā·rōḇ kā·’ar·beh wə·liḡ·mal·lê·hem ’ên mis·pār ka·ḥō·wl še·‘al- śə·p̄aṯ hay·yām lā·rōḇWLC · 12

And as Gideon arrived a man was telling his friend about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream…,” he said, “and I saw a loaf of barley bread come… tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned… and collapsed.”

His friend… replied: “This is nothing less than… the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite… God has delivered Midian and the whole camp into his hand.” -

Gideon Defeats Midian

  • When Gideon heard vvv the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” -

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one hand and a large jar [in the other], containing a torch -.

“Watch me and do… as I do,” [Gideon] said… “When I come to the outskirts of the camp,… do… exactly as I do.

When I and all who [are] with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon!’”

Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing… of the guard. They blew their horns and broke the jars that [were] in their hands.

The three companies blew their horns and shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns… in their right hands, they shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!”

Each [Israelite] took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.

אִ֣ישׁ וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ תַּחְתָּ֔יו סָבִ֖יב לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה כָּל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֛ה וַיָּ֧רָץ וַיָּרִ֖יעוּ וַיָּנִיסוּ׃ ’îš way·ya·‘am·ḏū taḥ·tāw sā·ḇîḇ lam·ma·ḥă·neh kāl- ham·ma·ḥă·neh way·yā·rāṣ way·yā·rî·‘ū way·yå̄·nī·sūWLC · 21

And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another… with their swords. The army fled to vvv Beth-shittah toward Zererah as far as the border vvv of Abel-meholah near Tabbath.

Then the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and they pursued… the Midianites.

Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as vvv Beth-barah -.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as vvv Beth-barah -.

They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb… at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites [and] brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
