Chapter 3

Nations Left to Test Israel

1

These are the nations that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not known any of the wars in Canaan,

𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤍𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍

if only vvv… to teach warfare to the subsequent generations vvv of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:

רַ֗ק לְמַ֙עַן֙ דַּ֚עַת לְלַמְּדָ֖ם מִלְחָמָ֑ה דֹּר֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רַ֥ק אֲשֶׁר־ לֹ֥א יְדָעֽוּם׃ לְפָנִ֖ים raq lə·ma·‘an da·‘aṯ lə·lam·mə·ḏām mil·ḥā·māh dō·rō·wṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl raq ’ă·šer- lō yə·ḏā·‘ūm lə·p̄ā·nîmWLC · 2

the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount vvv Baal-hermon to vvv Lebo-hamath.

𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤕 𐤎𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤕

חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת׀ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וְכָל־ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ וְהַצִּ֣ידֹנִ֔י וְהַ֣חִוִּ֔י יֹשֵׁ֖ב הַ֣ר הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן מֵהַר֙ בַּ֣עַל חֶרְמ֔וֹן עַ֖ד לְב֥וֹא חֲמָֽת׃ ḥă·mê·šeṯ sar·nê p̄ə·liš·tîm wə·ḵāl hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·haṣ·ṣî·ḏō·nî wə·ha·ḥiw·wî yō·šêḇ har hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn mê·har ba·‘al ḥer·mō·wn ‘aḏ lə·ḇō·w ḥă·māṯWLC · 3

[These nations] were [left] to test - the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤄

וַֽיִּהְי֕וּ לְנַסּ֥וֹת בָּ֖ם אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָדַ֗עַת הֲיִשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־ מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ צִוָּ֥ה אֶת־ אֲבוֹתָ֖ם בְּיַד־ מֹשֶֽׁה׃ way·yih·yū lə·nas·sō·wṯ bām ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl lā·ḏa·‘aṯ hă·yiš·mə·‘ū ’eṯ- miṣ·wōṯ Yah·weh ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wāh ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām bə·yaḏ- mō·šehWLC · 4

Thus the Israelites… continued to live among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤆𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤎𐤉

וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יָשְׁב֖וּ בְּקֶ֣רֶב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י הַחִתִּ֤י וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י וְהַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl yā·šə·ḇū bə·qe·reḇ hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî ha·ḥit·tî wə·hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî wə·ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sîWLC · 5

And they took the daughters [of these people]… in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

Othniel

So the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤅𐤕

בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶת־ וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ הָרַע֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּשְׁכְּח֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ אֶת־ הַבְּעָלִ֖ים וְאֶת־ הָאֲשֵׁרֽוֹת׃ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·ya·‘ă·śū hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh way·yiš·kə·ḥū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’eṯ- hab·bə·‘ā·lîm wə·’eṯ- hā·’ă·šê·rō·wṯWLC · 7

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand vvv of Cushan-rishathaim king vvv of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites… served [him] eight years.

𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤍 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤍𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤊𐤅𐤔𐤍 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌

אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֗ם בְּיַד֙ כּוּשַׁ֣ן רִשְׁעָתַ֔יִם מֶ֖לֶךְ אֲרַ֣ם נַהֲרָ֑יִם בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־ וַיַּעַבְד֧וּ כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה שָׁנִֽים׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yim·kə·rêm bə·yaḏ kū·šan riš·‘ā·ṯa·yim me·leḵ ’ă·ram na·hă·rā·yim ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū kū·šan riš·‘ā·ṯa·yim šə·mō·neh šā·nîmWLC · 8

But when the Israelites… cried out to the LORD, [He] raised up Othniel son of Caleb’s younger… brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save [them]…

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤏𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤁 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤉 𐤒𐤍𐤆 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה יְהוָ֥ה וַיָּ֨קֶם עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל לִבְנֵ֥י כָלֵ֖ב הַקָּטֹ֥ן מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ אֲחִ֥י קְנַ֔ז מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ וַיּֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ם אֵ֚ת בֶּן־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yā·qem ‘ā·ṯə·nî·’êl liḇ·nê ḵā·lêḇ haq·qā·ṭōn mim·men·nū ’ă·ḥî qə·naz mō·wō·šî·a‘ way·yō·wō·šî·‘êm ’êṯ ben- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 9

The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand [of Othniel] -, vvv who prevailed… against vvv him.

רֽוּחַ־ יְהוָה֮ וַתְּהִ֨י עָלָ֥יו יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט אֶת־ וַיֵּצֵא֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה יְהוָה֙ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֑ם בְּיָד֔וֹ אֶת־ כּוּשַׁ֥ן וַתָּ֣עָז יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתָֽיִם׃ rū·aḥ- Yah·weh wat·tə·hî ‘ā·lāw yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·pōṭ ’eṯ- way·yê·ṣê lam·mil·ḥā·māh Yah·weh way·yit·tên riš·‘ā·ṯa·yim me·leḵ ’ă·rām bə·yā·ḏōw ’eṯ- kū·šan wat·tā·‘āz yā·ḏōw ‘al kū·šan riš·‘ā·ṯā·yimWLC · 10

So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.

הָאָ֖רֶץ וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־ קְנַֽז׃פ וַיָּ֖מָת hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tiš·qōṭ ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh ‘ā·ṯə·nî·’êl ben- qə·naz way·yā·māṯWLC · 11

Ehud

Once again the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD. So He {gave} Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because… they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיֹּסִ֙פוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ עֶגְל֤וֹן מֶֽלֶךְ־ מוֹאָב֙ וַיְחַזֵּ֨ק עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֛ל כִּֽי־ עָשׂ֥וּ אֶת־ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ way·yō·si·p̄ū bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh Yah·weh ’eṯ- ‘eḡ·lō·wn me·leḵ- mō·w·’āḇ way·ḥaz·zêq ‘al- yiś·rā·’êl ‘al kî- ‘ā·śū ’eṯ- hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·wehWLC · 12

After enlisting the Ammonites… and Amalekites to join forces with him, [Eglon] attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the City of Palms.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤋𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌

בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן וַעֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיֶּאֱסֹ֣ף אֵלָ֔יו אֶת־ וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּֽירְשׁ֖וּ אֶת־ עִ֥יר הַתְּמָרִֽים׃ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wn wa·‘ă·mā·lêq way·ye·’ĕ·sōp̄ ’ê·lāw ’eṯ- way·yê·leḵ way·yaḵ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yî·rə·šū ’eṯ- ‘îr hat·tə·mā·rîmWLC · 13

The Israelites… served Eglon king of Moab eighteen… years.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄𐤎

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־ וַיַּעַבְד֤וּ עֶגְל֣וֹן מֶֽלֶךְ־ מוֹאָ֔ב שְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃ס ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ‘eḡ·lō·wn me·leḵ- mō·w·’āḇ šə·mō·w·neh ‘eś·rêh šā·nāhWLC · 14

And again [they]… cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera a left-handed… Benjamite…,… as their deliverer -. So [they] sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְהוָה֒ יְהוָ֨ה וַיָּקֶם֩ לָהֶ֜ם אֵה֤וּד בֶּן־ גֵּרָא֙ בֶּן־ אִטֵּ֖ר יַד־ יְמִינ֑וֹ בְנֵי־ הַיְמִינִ֔י אִ֥ישׁ מוֹשִׁ֗יעַ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל וַיִּשְׁלְח֨וּ בְּיָדוֹ֙ מִנְחָ֔ה לְעֶגְל֖וֹן מֶ֥לֶךְ מוֹאָֽב׃ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiz·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh Yah·weh way·yā·qem lā·hem ’ê·hūḏ ben- gê·rā ben- ’iṭ·ṭêr yaḏ- yə·mî·nōw ḇə·nê- hay·mî·nî ’îš mō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl way·yiš·lə·ḥū bə·yā·ḏōw min·ḥāh lə·‘eḡ·lō·wn me·leḵ mō·w·’āḇWLC · 15

Now Ehud had made for himself a double-edged… sword a cubit long. He strapped it to his right thigh under his cloak

and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an obese… man.

  • After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he ushered out those who had carried it.

But upon reaching the idols near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret… message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants… left him.

Then Ehud approached him… while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room -. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from [his] seat.

And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly.

Even the handle sank in after the blade, and Eglon’s fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon’s bowels emptied.

Then Ehud went out through the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind him.

After Ehud was gone, Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “… He must be relieving himself… in the cool room,” they said.

So they waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they took the key and opened [the doors]— and there was their lord lying dead on the floor.

Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.

  • On arriving [in Seirah], he blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites… came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader…

“Follow me,” he told them,… “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down… and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and they did not allow anyone to cross over.

At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men. Not one of them escaped…

So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day, and the land had rest for eighty years.
