Chapter 2

Israel Rebuked at Bochim

1

Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never… break My covenant with you,

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤐𐤓 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌

מַלְאַךְ־ יְהוָ֛ה וַיַּ֧עַל מִן־ הַגִּלְגָּ֖ל אֶל־ הַבֹּכִ֑ים פ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אַעֲלֶ֨ה אֶתְכֶ֜ם מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם וָאָבִ֤יא אֶתְכֶם֙ אֶל־ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִשְׁבַּ֙עְתִּי֙ לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם וָאֹמַ֕ר לֹֽא־ לְעוֹלָֽם׃ אָפֵ֧ר בְּרִיתִ֛י אִתְּכֶ֖ם mal·’aḵ- Yah·weh way·ya·‘al min- hag·gil·gāl ’el- hab·bō·ḵīm p̄ way·yō·mer ’a·‘ă·leh ’eṯ·ḵem mim·miṣ·ra·yim wā·’ā·ḇî ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer niš·ba‘·tî la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem wā·’ō·mar lō- lə·‘ō·w·lām ’ā·p̄êr bə·rî·ṯî ’it·tə·ḵemWLC · 1

and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤕𐤑𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤌

וְאַתֶּ֗ם לֹֽא־ תִכְרְת֤וּ בְרִית֙ לְיֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ הַזֹּ֔את הָאָ֣רֶץ תִּתֹּצ֑וּן מִזְבְּחוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹֽא־ שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם בְּקֹלִ֖י מַה־ זֹּ֥את עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tem lō- ṯiḵ·rə·ṯū ḇə·rîṯ lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇê haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ tit·tō·ṣūn miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯê·hem wə·lō- šə·ma‘·tem bə·qō·lî mah- zōṯ ‘ă·śî·ṯemWLC · 2

So now I tell you that I will not drive out [these people] before you; they will be [thorns] in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.”

𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤂𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤒𐤔 𐤋𐤊𐤌

וְגַ֣ם אָמַ֔רְתִּי לֹֽא־ אֲגָרֵ֥שׁ אוֹתָ֖ם מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם וְהָי֤וּ לָכֶם֙ לְצִדִּ֔ים וֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם יִהְי֥וּ לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ לָכֶ֖ם wə·ḡam ’ā·mar·tî lō- ’ă·ḡā·rêš ’ō·w·ṯām mip·pə·nê·ḵem wə·hā·yū lā·ḵem lə·ṣid·dîm wê·lō·hê·hem yih·yū lə·mō·w·qêš lā·ḵemWLC · 3

  • When the angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites…, the people lifted up their voices and wept.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤊𐤅

וַיְהִ֗י מַלְאַ֤ךְ יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ כְּדַבֵּ֞ר הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים אֶֽל־ כָּל־ בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הָעָ֛ם אֶת־ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖ם וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ way·hî mal·’aḵ Yah·weh ’eṯ- kə·ḏab·bêr hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm ’el- kāl- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl hā·‘ām ’eṯ- way·yiś·’ū qō·w·lām way·yiḇ·kūWLC · 4

So they called… that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites… went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤅

יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ אֶת־ וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח הָעָ֑ם בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיֵּלְכ֧וּ לָרֶ֥שֶׁת אֶת־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ אִ֥ישׁ לְנַחֲלָת֖וֹ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’eṯ- way·šal·laḥ hā·‘ām ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·lə·ḵū lā·re·šeṯ ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’îš lə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōwWLC · 6

And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua [and] of the elders who outlived… [him], who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.

הָעָם֙ אֶת־ וַיַּעַבְד֤וּ יְהוָ֔ה כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֣י יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ וְכֹ֣ל׀ יְמֵ֣י הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶאֱרִ֤יכוּ יָמִים֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוֹשׁ֔וּעַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר רָא֗וּ אֵ֣ת כָּל־ הַגָּד֔וֹל מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָה֙ עָשָׂ֖ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ hā·‘ām ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū Yah·weh kōl yə·mê yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ wə·ḵōl yə·mê haz·zə·qê·nîm ’ă·šer he·’ĕ·rî·ḵū yā·mîm ’a·ḥă·rê yə·hō·wō·šū·a‘ ’ă·šer rā·’ū ’êṯ kāl- hag·gā·ḏō·wl ma·‘ă·śêh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh lə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 7

And Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age… of 110…

יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ בִּן־ נ֖וּן עֶ֣בֶד יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּ֛מָת בֶּן־ שָׁנִֽים׃ מֵאָ֥ה וָעֶ֖שֶׂר yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūn ‘e·ḇeḏ Yah·weh way·yā·māṯ ben- šā·nîm mê·’āh wā·‘e·śerWLC · 8

They buried him in the land of his inheritance, vvv at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

וַיִּקְבְּר֤וּ אוֹתוֹ֙ בִּגְב֣וּל נַחֲלָת֔וֹ בְּתִמְנַת־ חֶ֖רֶס בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם מִצְּפ֖וֹן לְהַר־ גָּֽעַשׁ׃ way·yiq·bə·rū ’ō·w·ṯōw biḡ·ḇūl na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw bə·ṯim·naṯ- ḥe·res bə·har ’ep̄·rā·yim miṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·wn lə·har- gā·‘ašWLC · 9

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.

𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤎

אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם כָּל־ הַדּ֣וֹר הַה֔וּא וְגַם֙ נֶאֶסְפ֖וּ אֶל־ אֲבוֹתָ֑יו אַחֵ֜ר דּ֨וֹר וַיָּקָם֩ אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹא־ יָֽדְעוּ֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה וְגַם֙ אֶת־ הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס ’a·ḥă·rê·hem kāl- had·dō·wr ha·hū wə·ḡam ne·’es·p̄ū ’el- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯāw ’a·ḥêr dō·wr way·yā·qām ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḏə·‘ū ’eṯ- Yah·weh wə·ḡam ’eṯ- ham·ma·‘ă·śeh ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh lə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 10

And the Israelites… did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals.

בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־ וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־ הַבְּעָלִֽים׃ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·ya·‘ă·śū hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū ’eṯ- hab·bə·‘ā·lîmWLC · 11

Thus they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various… gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and provoked the LORD {to anger},

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤏𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וַיַּעַזְב֞וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֣ה׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתָ֗ם הַמּוֹצִ֣יא אוֹתָם֮ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַיִם֒ וַיֵּלְכ֞וּ אַחֲרֵ֣י׀ אֲחֵרִ֗ים מֵאֱלֹהֵ֤י אֱלֹהִ֣ים הָֽעַמִּים֙ סְבִיב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר֙ וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם וַיַּכְעִ֖סוּ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃ way·ya·‘az·ḇū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām ham·mō·w·ṣî ’ō·w·ṯām mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim way·yê·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm mê·’ĕ·lō·hê ’ĕ·lō·hîm hā·‘am·mîm sə·ḇî·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem ’ă·šer way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū lā·hem way·yaḵ·‘i·sū ’eṯ- Yah·wehWLC · 12

for they forsook Him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤕

וַיַּעַזְב֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ לַבַּ֖עַל וְלָעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃ way·ya·‘az·ḇū ’eṯ- Yah·weh way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū lab·ba·‘al wə·lā·‘aš·tā·rō·wṯWLC · 13

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands vvv of those who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist… -.

𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤎𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌

אַ֤ף יְהוָה֙ וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיִּתְּנֵם֙ בְּיַד־ שֹׁסִ֔ים וַיָּשֹׁ֖סּוּ אוֹתָ֑ם וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֞ם בְּיַ֤ד אֽוֹיְבֵיהֶם֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב יָכְל֣וּ וְלֹֽא־ ע֔וֹד לַעֲמֹ֖ד לִפְנֵ֥י אוֹיְבֵיהֶֽם׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yit·tə·nêm bə·yaḏ- šō·sîm way·yā·šōs·sū ’ō·w·ṯām way·yim·kə·rêm bə·yaḏ ’ō·wy·ḇê·hem mis·sā·ḇîḇ yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ la·‘ă·mōḏ lip̄·nê ’ō·wy·ḇê·hemWLC · 14

Wherever [Israel] marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring calamity, just as He vvv had sworn… to them. So they were greatly distressed…

בְּכֹ֣ל׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָצְא֗וּ יַד־ יְהוָה֙ הָיְתָה־ בָּ֣ם לְרָעָ֔ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֔ה וְכַאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֣ר נִשְׁבַּ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה לָהֶ֑ם וַיֵּ֥צֶר לָהֶ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃ bə·ḵōl ’ă·šer yā·ṣə·’ū yaḏ- Yah·weh hā·yə·ṯāh- bām lə·rā·‘āh ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh wə·ḵa·’ă·šer dib·ber niš·ba‘ Yah·weh lā·hem way·yê·ṣer lā·hem mə·’ōḏWLC · 15

Judges Raised Up

Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤔𐤎𐤉𐤄𐤌

יְהוָ֖ה וַיָּ֥קֶם שֹֽׁפְטִ֑ים וַיּ֣וֹשִׁיע֔וּם מִיַּ֖ד שֹׁסֵיהֶֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yā·qem šō·p̄ə·ṭîm way·yō·wō·šî·‘ūm mî·yaḏ šō·sê·hemWLC · 16

[Israel,] however, did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers [had done]…

וְגַ֤ם לֹ֣א שָׁמֵ֔עוּ אֶל־ שֹֽׁפְטֵיהֶם֙ כִּ֣י זָנ֗וּ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם מַהֵ֗ר סָ֣רוּ מִן־ הַדֶּ֜רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲבוֹתָ֛ם הָלְכ֧וּ לִשְׁמֹ֥עַ יְהוָ֖ה מִצְוֺת־ לֹא־ עָ֥שׂוּ כֵֽן׃ wə·ḡam lō šā·mê·‘ū ’el- šō·p̄ə·ṭê·hem kî zā·nū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū lā·hem ma·hêr sā·rū min- had·de·reḵ ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām hā·lə·ḵū liš·mō·a‘ Yah·weh miṣ·wōṯ- lō- ‘ā·śū ḵênWLC · 17

Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, [He] was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge… was still alive…; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning under those who oppressed them and afflicted them.

וְכִֽי־ יְהוָ֥ה׀ הֵקִ֨ים שֹֽׁפְטִים֒ לָהֶם֮ יְהוָה֙ וְהָיָ֤ה עִם־ הַשֹּׁפֵ֔ט וְהֽוֹשִׁיעָם֙ מִיַּ֣ד אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם הַשּׁוֹפֵ֑ט כִּֽי־ כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֣י יְהוָה֙ יִנָּחֵ֤ם מִנַּֽאֲקָתָ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֥י לֹחֲצֵיהֶ֖ם וְדֹחֲקֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·ḵî- Yah·weh hê·qîm šō·p̄ə·ṭîm lā·hem Yah·weh wə·hā·yāh ‘im- haš·šō·p̄êṭ wə·hō·wō·šî·‘ām mî·yaḏ ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem haš·šō·w·p̄êṭ kî- kōl yə·mê Yah·weh yin·nā·ḥêm min·na·’ă·qā·ṯām mip·pə·nê lō·ḥă·ṣê·hem wə·ḏō·ḥă·qê·hemWLC · 18

But when the judge… died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤌

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ הַשּׁוֹפֵ֗ט יָשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ בְּמ֣וֹת וְהִשְׁחִ֣יתוּ מֵֽאֲבוֹתָ֔ם לָלֶ֗כֶת אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים לְעָבְדָ֖ם וּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת לָהֶ֑ם לֹ֤א הִפִּ֙ילוּ֙ מִמַּ֣עַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם הַקָּשָֽׁה׃ וּמִדַּרְכָּ֖ם wə·hā·yāh haš·šō·w·p̄êṭ yā·šu·ḇū bə·mō·wṯ wə·hiš·ḥî·ṯū mê·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām lā·le·ḵeṯ ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏām ū·lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ lā·hem lō hip·pî·lū mim·ma·‘al·lê·hem haq·qā·šāh ū·mid·dar·kāmWLC · 19

So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed the covenant I laid down for their fathers and has not heeded My voice,

אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֗אמֶר יַעַן֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַזֶּ֗ה אֶת־ הַגּ֣וֹי עָבְר֜וּ בְּרִיתִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּ֣יתִי אֶת־ אֲבוֹתָ֔ם וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ לְקוֹלִֽי׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer ya·‘an ’ă·šer haz·zeh ’eṯ- hag·gō·w ‘ā·ḇə·rū bə·rî·ṯî ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām wə·lō šā·mə·‘ū lə·qō·w·lîWLC · 20

  • I will no longer drive out before them… any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

גַּם־ אֲנִי֙ לֹ֣א אוֹסִ֔יף לְהוֹרִ֥ישׁ מִן־ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם אִ֖ישׁ הַגּוֹיִ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ עָזַ֥ב וַיָּמֹֽת׃ gam- ’ă·nî lō ’ō·w·sîp̄ lə·hō·w·rîš min- mip·pə·nê·hem ’îš hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ‘ā·zaḇ way·yā·mōṯWLC · 21

In this way I will test whether… Israel - will keep the way of the LORD by walking in it as… their fathers did.”

𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤍𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌

לְמַ֛עַן נַסּ֥וֹת בָּ֖ם אֶת־ אִם־ לֹֽא׃ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הֵם֩ אֶת־ הֲשֹׁמְרִ֣ים דֶּ֨רֶךְ יְהוָ֜ה לָלֶ֣כֶת בָּ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר שָׁמְר֥וּ אֲבוֹתָ֖ם lə·ma·‘an nas·sō·wṯ bām ’eṯ- ’im- lō yiś·rā·’êl hêm ’eṯ- hă·šō·mə·rîm de·reḵ Yah·weh lā·le·ḵeṯ bām ka·’ă·šer šā·mə·rū ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯāmWLC · 22

That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
