Samson’s Marriage
1
One day Samson went down to Timnah, where he saw… a young Philistine woman…

שִׁמְשׁ֖וֹן וַיֵּ֥רֶד תִּמְנָ֑תָה וַיַּ֥רְא אִשָּׁ֛ה פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ מִבְּנ֥וֹת בְּתִמְנָ֖תָה šim·šō·wn way·yê·reḏ tim·nā·ṯāh way·yar ’iš·šāh pə·liš·tîm mib·bə·nō·wṯ bə·ṯim·nā·ṯāh — WLC · 1

So he returned and told his father and mother -, “I have seen a daughter of the Philistines in Timnah. Now get her for me as a wife.”

וַיַּ֗עַל וַיַּגֵּד֙ לְאָבִ֣יו וּלְאִמּ֔וֹ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אִשָּׁ֛ה רָאִ֥יתִי מִבְּנ֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים בְתִמְנָ֖תָה וְעַתָּ֕ה קְחוּ־ אוֹתָ֥הּ לִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ way·ya·‘al way·yag·gêḏ lə·’ā·ḇîw ū·lə·’im·mōw way·yō·mer ’iš·šāh rā·’î·ṯî mib·bə·nō·wṯ pə·liš·tîm ḇə·ṯim·nā·ṯāh wə·‘at·tāh qə·ḥū- ’ō·w·ṯāh lî lə·’iš·šāh — WLC · 2

But his father and mother replied “Can’t you [find] a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? - Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But Samson… told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”

אָבִ֣יו וְאִמּ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֜וֹ הַאֵין֩ בִּבְנ֨וֹת אַחֶ֤יךָ וּבְכָל־ עַמִּי֙ אִשָּׁ֔ה כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֤ה הוֹלֵךְ֙ הָעֲרֵלִ֑ים מִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים לָקַ֣חַת אִשָּׁ֔ה שִׁמְשׁ֤וֹן אֶל־ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אָבִיו֙ קַֽח־ אוֹתָ֣הּ לִ֔י כִּֽי־ הִ֖יא יָשְׁרָ֥ה בְעֵינָֽי׃ ’ā·ḇîw wə·’im·mōw way·yō·mer lōw ha·’ên biḇ·nō·wṯ ’a·ḥe·ḵā ū·ḇə·ḵāl ‘am·mî ’iš·šāh kî- ’at·tāh hō·w·lêḵ hā·‘ă·rê·lîm mip·pə·liš·tîm lā·qa·ḥaṯ ’iš·šāh šim·šō·wn ’el- way·yō·mer ’ā·ḇîw qaḥ- ’ō·w·ṯāh lî kî- hî yā·šə·rāh ḇə·‘ê·nāy — WLC · 3

(Now his father and mother did not know… this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)

וְאָבִ֨יו וְאִמּ֜וֹ לֹ֣א יָדְע֗וּ כִּ֤י הִ֔יא כִּי־ מֵיְהוָה֙ הֽוּא־ מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ תֹאֲנָ֥ה מִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים הַהִ֔יא וּבָעֵ֣ת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים מֹשְׁלִ֥ים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ wə·’ā·ḇîw wə·’im·mōw lō yā·ḏə·‘ū kî hî kî- Yah·weh hū- mə·ḇaq·qêš ṯō·’ă·nāh mip·pə·liš·tîm ha·hî ū·ḇā·‘êṯ pə·liš·tîm mō·šə·lîm bə·yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 4

Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Suddenly a young lion… came roaring at him,

שִׁמְשׁ֛וֹן וַיֵּ֧רֶד תִּמְנָ֑תָה וְאָבִ֥יו וְאִמּ֖וֹ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ עַד־ כַּרְמֵ֣י תִמְנָ֔תָה וְהִנֵּה֙ כְּפִ֣יר אֲרָי֔וֹת שֹׁאֵ֖ג לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃ šim·šō·wn way·yê·reḏ tim·nā·ṯāh wə·’ā·ḇîw wə·’im·mōw way·yā·ḇō·’ū ‘aḏ- kar·mê ṯim·nā·ṯāh wə·hin·nêh kə·p̄îr ’ă·rā·yō·wṯ šō·’êḡ liq·rā·ṯōw — WLC · 5

and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare… hands as one would tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.

ר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֗ה וַתִּצְלַ֨ח עָלָ֜יו וַֽיְשַׁסְּעֵ֙הוּ֙ וּמְא֖וּמָה אֵ֣ין בְּיָד֑וֹ כְּשַׁסַּ֣ע הַגְּדִ֔י וְלֹ֤א הִגִּיד֙ לְאָבִ֣יו וּלְאִמּ֔וֹ אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃ rū·aḥ Yah·weh wat·tiṣ·laḥ ‘ā·lāw way·šas·sə·‘ê·hū ū·mə·’ū·māh ’ên bə·yā·ḏōw kə·šas·sa‘ hag·gə·ḏî wə·lō hig·gîḏ lə·’ā·ḇîw ū·lə·’im·mōw ’êṯ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh — WLC · 6

Then [Samson] continued on his way down and spoke to the woman, because she was pleasing to his eyes.

וַיֵּ֖רֶד וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר לָאִשָּׁ֑ה שִׁמְשֽׁוֹן׃ וַתִּישַׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י way·yê·reḏ way·ḏab·bêr lā·’iš·šāh šim·šō·wn wat·tî·šar bə·‘ê·nê — WLC · 7
Samson’s Riddle

When [Samson] returned later to take her, he left the road to see the lion’s carcass, and in [it]… was a swarm of bees, along with their honey.
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤕 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔
וַיָּ֤שָׁב מִיָּמִים֙ לְקַחְתָּ֔הּ וַיָּ֣סַר לִרְא֔וֹת אֵ֖ת הָאַרְיֵ֑ה מַפֶּ֣לֶת בִּגְוִיַּ֥ת הָאַרְיֵ֖ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה עֲדַ֧ת דְּבוֹרִ֛ים וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ way·yā·šāḇ mî·yā·mîm lə·qaḥ·tāh way·yā·sar lir·’ō·wṯ ’êṯ hā·’ar·yêh map·pe·leṯ biḡ·wî·yaṯ hā·’ar·yêh wə·hin·nêh ‘ă·ḏaṯ də·ḇō·w·rîm ū·ḏə·ḇāš — WLC · 8

So he scooped some honey into his hands and ate it as he went along… And when he returned to his father… and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.

וַיִּרְדֵּ֣הוּ אֶל־ כַּפָּ֗יו וְאָכֹ֔ל וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֶל־ אָבִ֣יו וְאֶל־ אִמּ֔וֹ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם וַיֹּאכֵ֑לוּ וְלֹֽא־ הִגִּ֣יד לָהֶ֔ם כִּ֛י רָדָ֥ה הַדְּבָֽשׁ׃ הָאַרְיֵ֖ה מִגְּוִיַּ֥ת way·yir·dê·hū ’el- kap·pāw wə·’ā·ḵōl way·yê·leḵ hā·lō·wḵ way·yê·leḵ ’el- ’ā·ḇîw wə·’el- ’im·mōw way·yit·tên lā·hem way·yō·ḵê·lū wə·lō- hig·gîḏ lā·hem kî rā·ḏāh had·də·ḇāš hā·’ar·yêh mig·gə·wî·yaṯ — WLC · 9

Then his father went to visit the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, as… was customary for the bridegroom.
𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤄𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌
אָבִ֖יהוּ וַיֵּ֥רֶד אֶל־ הָאִשָּׁ֑ה שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙ וַיַּ֨עַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה שָׁ֤ם כִּ֛י כֵּ֥ן יַעֲשׂ֖וּ הַבַּחוּרִֽים׃ ’ā·ḇî·hū way·yê·reḏ ’el- hā·’iš·šāh šim·šō·wn way·ya·‘aś miš·teh šām kî kên ya·‘ă·śū hab·ba·ḥū·rîm — WLC · 10

And when [the Philistines] saw him, they selected thirty men to accompany him…

וַיְהִ֖י כִּרְאוֹתָ֣ם אוֹת֑וֹ וַיִּקְחוּ֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים מֵֽרֵעִ֔ים וַיִּהְי֖וּ אִתּֽוֹ׃ way·hî kir·’ō·w·ṯām ’ō·w·ṯōw way·yiq·ḥū šə·lō·šîm mê·rê·‘îm way·yih·yū ’it·tōw — WLC · 11

“Let me tell… you a riddle,” Samson said to them. “If you can solve… it for me [within the] seven days of the feast -, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.

אָחֽוּדָה־ נָּ֥א לָכֶ֖ם חִידָ֑ה שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ אִם־ הַגֵּ֣ד תַּגִּידוּ֩ אוֹתָ֨הּ לִ֜י שִׁבְעַ֨ת יְמֵ֤י הַמִּשְׁתֶּה֙ וּמְצָאתֶ֔ם וְנָתַתִּ֤י לָכֶם֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים סְדִינִ֔ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים חֲלִפֹ֥ת בְּגָדִֽים׃ ’ā·ḥū·ḏāh- nā lā·ḵem ḥî·ḏāh šim·šō·wn way·yō·mer lā·hem ’im- hag·gêḏ tag·gî·ḏū ’ō·w·ṯāh lî šiḇ·‘aṯ yə·mê ham·miš·teh ū·mə·ṣā·ṯem wə·nā·ṯat·tî lā·ḵem šə·lō·šîm sə·ḏî·nîm ū·šə·lō·šîm ḥă·li·p̄ōṯ bə·ḡā·ḏîm — WLC · 12

But if you cannot… solve it you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your riddle,” they replied “Let us hear it.”

וְאִם־ לֹ֣א תוּכְלוּ֮ לְהַגִּ֣יד לִי֒ אַתֶּ֥ם וּנְתַתֶּ֨ם לִי֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים סְדִינִ֔ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים חֲלִיפ֣וֹת בְּגָדִ֑ים ח֥וּדָה חִידָתְךָ֖ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֔וֹ וְנִשְׁמָעֶֽנָּה׃ wə·’im- lō ṯū·ḵə·lū lə·hag·gîḏ lî ’at·tem ū·nə·ṯat·tem lî šə·lō·šîm sə·ḏî·nîm ū·šə·lō·šîm ḥă·lî·p̄ō·wṯ bə·ḡā·ḏîm ḥū·ḏāh ḥî·ḏā·ṯə·ḵā way·yō·mə·rū lōw wə·niš·mā·‘en·nāh — WLC · 13

So he said to them: “Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet.” For three days they were unable… to explain the riddle.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם מֵהָֽאֹכֵל֙ יָצָ֣א מַאֲכָ֔ל וּמֵעַ֖ז יָצָ֣א מָת֑וֹק שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים׃ וְלֹ֥א יָכְל֛וּ לְהַגִּ֥יד הַחִידָ֖ה way·yō·mer lā·hem mê·hā·’ō·ḵêl yā·ṣā ma·’ă·ḵāl ū·mê·‘az yā·ṣā mā·ṯō·wq šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîm wə·lō yā·ḵə·lū lə·hag·gîḏ ha·ḥî·ḏāh — WLC · 14

So on the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to explain the riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you invite us here… to rob us?”

וַיְהִ֣י׀ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙ לְאֵֽשֶׁת־ פַּתִּ֣י אֶת־ אִישֵׁ֗ךְ וְיַגֶּד־ הַ֣חִידָ֔ה לָ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־ פֶּן־ נִשְׂרֹ֥ף אוֹתָ֛ךְ וְאֶת־ אָבִ֖יךְ בֵּ֥ית בָּאֵ֑שׁ קְרָאתֶ֥ם לָ֖נוּ הֲלֹֽא׃ הַלְיָרְשֵׁ֕נוּ way·hî haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm way·yō·mə·rū šim·šō·wn lə·’ê·šeṯ- pat·tî ’eṯ- ’î·šêḵ wə·yag·geḏ- ha·ḥî·ḏāh lā·nū ’eṯ- pen- niś·rōp̄ ’ō·w·ṯāḵ wə·’eṯ- ’ā·ḇîḵ bêṯ bā·’êš qə·rā·ṯem lā·nū hă·lō hal·yā·rə·šê·nū — WLC · 15

Then Samson’s wife came to him, weeping, and said,… “You hate me! You do not really love me! You have posed to my people… a riddle, but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”

She wept… the whole seven days - of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her [the answer]. And in turn she explained the riddle to her people…

Before sunset… on the seventh day, the men of the city said to [Samson]: “What is sweeter than honey? And what [is] stronger than a lion?” So he said to them: “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle!”

Then the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed… thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had solved the riddle. And burning with anger, Samson returned to his father’s house,
