Chapter 11

Jephthah Delivers Israel

1

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor; he was the son… of a prostitute, and Gilead was his father.

𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤆𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤋𐤃

וְיִפְתָּ֣ח הַגִּלְעָדִ֗י הָיָה֙ גִּבּ֣וֹר חַ֔יִל וְה֖וּא בֶּן־ אִשָּׁ֣ה זוֹנָ֑ה גִּלְעָ֖ד אֶת־ יִפְתָּֽח׃ וַיּ֥וֹלֶד wə·yip̄·tāḥ hag·gil·‘ā·ḏî hā·yāh gib·bō·wr ḥa·yil wə·hū ben- ’iš·šāh zō·w·nāh gil·‘āḏ ’eṯ- yip̄·tāḥ way·yō·w·leḏWLC · 1

And Gilead’s… wife bore him sons who… grew up, drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have no inheritance in our father’s house, because you are the son of another woman.”

גִּלְעָ֛ד ל֖וֹ אֵֽשֶׁת־ וַתֵּ֧לֶד בָּנִ֑ים בְֽנֵי־ הָאִשָּׁ֜ה וַיִּגְדְּל֨וּ יִפְתָּ֗ח וַיְגָרְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־ וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ לוֹ֙ לֹֽא־ תִנְחַ֣ל אָבִ֔ינוּ בְּבֵית־ כִּ֛י אָֽתָּה׃ בֶּן־ אַחֶ֖רֶת אִשָּׁ֥ה gil·‘āḏ lōw ’ê·šeṯ- wat·tê·leḏ bā·nîm ḇə·nê- hā·’iš·šāh way·yiḡ·də·lū yip̄·tāḥ way·ḡā·rə·šū ’eṯ- way·yō·mə·rū lōw lō- ṯin·ḥal ’ā·ḇî·nū bə·ḇêṯ- kî ’āt·tāh ben- ’a·ḥe·reṯ ’iš·šāhWLC · 2

So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where worthless men gathered around… [him]… and traveled with him.

יִפְתָּח֙ וַיִּבְרַ֤ח מִפְּנֵ֣י אֶחָ֔יו וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּאֶ֣רֶץ ט֑וֹב רֵיקִ֔ים וַיִּֽתְלַקְּט֤וּ אֶל־ יִפְתָּח֙ אֲנָשִׁ֣ים וַיֵּצְא֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃פ yip̄·tāḥ way·yiḇ·raḥ mip·pə·nê ’e·ḥāw way·yê·šeḇ bə·’e·reṣ ṭō·wḇ rê·qîm way·yiṯ·laq·qə·ṭū ’el- yip̄·tāḥ ’ă·nā·šîm way·yê·ṣə·’ū ‘im·mōwWLC · 3

Some time later…, when the Ammonites… fought against Israel

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

וַיְהִ֖י מִיָּמִ֑ים בְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֖וֹן וַיִּלָּחֲמ֥וּ עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ way·hî mî·yā·mîm ḇə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn way·yil·lā·ḥă·mū ‘im- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 4

and - made war with [them], the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤈𐤅𐤁

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁר־ בְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֖וֹן נִלְחֲמ֥וּ עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל זִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ לָקַ֥חַת אֶת־ יִפְתָּ֖ח מֵאֶ֥רֶץ טֽוֹב׃ way·hî ka·’ă·šer- ḇə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn nil·ḥă·mū ‘im- yiś·rā·’êl ziq·nê ḡil·‘āḏ way·yê·lə·ḵū lā·qa·ḥaṯ ’eṯ- yip̄·tāḥ mê·’e·reṣ ṭō·wḇWLC · 5

“Come,” they said -, “be our commander, so that we can fight against the Ammonites…”

𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍

לְכָ֕ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לְיִפְתָּ֔ח וְהָיִ֥יתָה לָּ֖נוּ לְקָצִ֑ין וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֖ה בִּבְנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ lə·ḵāh way·yō·mə·rū lə·yip̄·tāḥ wə·hā·yî·ṯāh lā·nū lə·qā·ṣîn wə·nil·lā·ḥă·māh biḇ·nê ‘am·mō·wnWLC · 6

Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and expel me from my father’s house? Why then have you come to me now, when you are in distress…?”

יִפְתָּח֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לְזִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד אַתֶּם֙ הֲלֹ֤א שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אוֹתִ֔י וַתְּגָרְשׁ֖וּנִי אָבִ֑י מִבֵּ֣ית וּמַדּ֜וּעַ בָּאתֶ֤ם אֵלַי֙ עַ֔תָּה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צַ֥ר לָכֶֽם׃ yip̄·tāḥ way·yō·mer lə·ziq·nê ḡil·‘āḏ ’at·tem hă·lō śə·nê·ṯem ’ō·w·ṯî wat·tə·ḡā·rə·šū·nî ’ā·ḇî mib·bêṯ ū·mad·dū·a‘ bā·ṯem ’ê·lay ‘at·tāh ka·’ă·šer ṣar lā·ḵemWLC · 7

They… answered Jephthah, “This is why we now turn… to you, that you may go with us, fight the Ammonites…, and become leader over all of us who live in Gilead.”

זִקְנֵ֨י גִלְעָ֜ד וַיֹּאמְרוּ֩ יִפְתָּ֗ח לָכֵן֙ עַתָּה֙ שַׁ֣בְנוּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ אֶל־ וְהָלַכְתָּ֣ עִמָּ֔נוּ וְנִלְחַמְתָּ֖ בִּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֑וֹן וְהָיִ֤יתָ לְרֹ֔אשׁ לְכֹ֖ל לָּ֙נוּ֙ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י גִלְעָֽד׃ ziq·nê ḡil·‘āḏ way·yō·mə·rū yip̄·tāḥ lā·ḵên ‘at·tāh šaḇ·nū ’ê·le·ḵā ’el- wə·hā·laḵ·tā ‘im·mā·nū wə·nil·ḥam·tā biḇ·nê ‘am·mō·wn wə·hā·yî·ṯā lə·rōš lə·ḵōl lā·nū yō·šə·ḇê ḡil·‘āḏWLC · 8

But Jephthah asked vvv [them]…, “If you take me back to fight the Ammonites… and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”

𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤔

יִפְתָּ֜ח וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ זִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֗ד אִם־ אַתֶּ֤ם אוֹתִי֙ מְשִׁיבִ֨ים לְהִלָּחֵם֙ בִּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן יְהוָ֛ה אוֹתָ֖ם וְנָתַ֧ן לְפָנָ֑י אָנֹכִ֕י אֶהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם לְרֹֽאשׁ׃ yip̄·tāḥ way·yō·mer ’el- ziq·nê ḡil·‘āḏ ’im- ’at·tem ’ō·w·ṯî mə·šî·ḇîm lə·hil·lā·ḥêm biḇ·nê ‘am·mō·wn Yah·weh ’ō·w·ṯām wə·nā·ṯan lə·p̄ā·nāy ’ā·nō·ḵî ’eh·yeh lā·ḵem lə·rōšWLC · 9

And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD is our witness… if we do not do as you say.”…

𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤊𐤍

זִקְנֵֽי־ גִלְעָ֖ד וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־ יִפְתָּ֑ח יְהוָ֗ה יִהְיֶ֤ה שֹׁמֵ֙עַ֙ בֵּֽינוֹתֵ֔ינוּ אִם־ לֹ֥א נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ כִדְבָרְךָ֖ כֵּ֥ן ziq·nê- ḡil·‘āḏ way·yō·mə·rū ’el- yip̄·tāḥ Yah·weh yih·yeh šō·mê·a‘ bê·nō·w·ṯê·nū ’im- lō na·‘ă·śeh ḵiḏ·ḇā·rə·ḵā kênWLC · 10

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at Mizpah.

𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤌 𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤄𐤐

יִפְתָּח֙ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ עִם־ זִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד הָעָ֥ם אוֹת֛וֹ וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם לְרֹ֣אשׁ וּלְקָצִ֑ין יִפְתָּ֧ח אֶת־ וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר כָּל־ דְּבָרָ֛יו לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה בַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃פ yip̄·tāḥ way·yê·leḵ ‘im- ziq·nê ḡil·‘āḏ hā·‘ām ’ō·w·ṯōw way·yā·śî·mū ‘ă·lê·hem lə·rōš ū·lə·qā·ṣîn yip̄·tāḥ ’eṯ- way·ḏab·bêr kāl- də·ḇā·rāw lip̄·nê Yah·weh bam·miṣ·pāhWLC · 11

Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…, saying, “What do you have against me… that you have come to fight against my land?”

𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤉

יִפְתָּח֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־ מֶ֥לֶךְ בְּנֵֽי־ עַמּ֖וֹן לֵאמֹ֑ר מַה־ לִּ֣י וָלָ֔ךְ כִּֽי־ בָ֥אתָ לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם אֵלַ֖י בְּאַרְצִֽי׃ yip̄·tāḥ way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- me·leḵ bə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn lê·mōr mah- lî wā·lāḵ kî- ḇā·ṯā lə·hil·lā·ḥêm ’ê·lay bə·’ar·ṣîWLC · 12

The king of the Ammonites… answered Jephthah’s… messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it peaceably.”

מֶ֨לֶךְ בְּנֵי־ עַמּ֜וֹן וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֶל־ יִפְתָּ֗ח כִּֽי־ מַלְאֲכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶת־ בַּעֲלוֹת֣וֹ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לָקַ֨ח אַרְצִי֙ מֵאַרְנ֥וֹן וְעַד־ הַיַּבֹּ֖ק וְעַד־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְעַתָּ֕ה הָשִׁ֥יבָה אֶתְהֶ֖ן בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃ me·leḵ bə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn way·yō·mer ’el- yip̄·tāḥ kî- mal·’ă·ḵê yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- ba·‘ă·lō·w·ṯōw mim·miṣ·ra·yim lā·qaḥ ’ar·ṣî mê·’ar·nō·wn wə·‘aḏ- hay·yab·bōq wə·‘aḏ- hay·yar·dên wə·‘at·tāh hā·šî·ḇāh ’eṯ·hen bə·šā·lō·wmWLC · 13

Jephthah again… sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…

𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍

יִפְתָּ֑ח וַיּ֥וֹסֶף ע֖וֹד וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־ מֶ֖לֶךְ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ yip̄·tāḥ way·yō·w·sep̄ ‘ō·wḏ way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- me·leḵ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wnWLC · 14

to tell him, “This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take away the land of Moab [or] - of the Ammonites.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ כֹּ֖ה יִפְתָּ֑ח אָמַ֣ר יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־ לֹֽא־ לָקַ֤ח אֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֔ב וְאֶת־ אֶ֖רֶץ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ way·yō·mer lōw kōh yip̄·tāḥ ’ā·mar yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- lō- lā·qaḥ ’e·reṣ mō·w·’āḇ wə·’eṯ- ’e·reṣ bə·nê ‘am·mō·wnWLC · 15

But when [Israel] came up out of Egypt, [they] traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤋𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤃 𐤎𐤅𐤐 𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤄

כִּ֖י בַּעֲלוֹתָ֣ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ עַד־ ס֔וּף יַם־ וַיָּבֹ֖א קָדֵֽשָׁה׃ kî ba·‘ă·lō·w·ṯām mim·miṣ·rā·yim yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·leḵ bam·miḏ·bār ‘aḏ- sūp̄ yam- way·yā·ḇō qā·ḏê·šāhWLC · 16

Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.

Then [Israel] traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the Arnon was its border -.

And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land into our own place.’

But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So [he] gathered all his people, encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.

Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites who inhabited that country,

seizing all the land… from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.

Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it?

Do you not possess whatever your god Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the LORD our God has granted us. -

Are you now so much better… than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend… with Israel or fight… against them?

For three hundred years Israel has lived in Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as all the cities along the banks of the Arnon. Why did you not take them back during that time?

I have not sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by waging war against me. May the LORD, the Judge, decide today between the Israelites… and the Ammonites…”

But the king of the Ammonites… paid no heed to the message Jephthah sent him.

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, then through Mizpah of Gilead. And from [there]… he advanced against the Ammonites…

Jephthah made this vow to the LORD:… “If indeed You will deliver the Ammonites… into my hand,

then whatever… comes out the door of my house to greet me on my triumphant return from the Ammonites… will belong to the LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”

So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites… to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hand.

יִפְתָּ֛ח וַיַּעֲבֹ֥ר אֶל־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן לְהִלָּ֣חֶם בָּ֑ם יְהוָ֖ה וַיִתְּנֵ֥ם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ yip̄·tāḥ way·ya·‘ă·ḇōr ’el- bə·nê ‘am·mō·wn lə·hil·lā·ḥem bām Yah·weh wa·yit·tə·nēm bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 32

With a great… blow he devastated twenty cities from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel-keramim… So the Ammonites… were subdued before the Israelites…

And when Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing!… She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.

יִפְתָּ֣ח וַיָּבֹ֨א אֶל־ בֵּיתוֹ֒ הַמִּצְפָּה֮ וְהִנֵּ֤ה בִתּוֹ֙ יֹצֵ֣את לִקְרָאת֔וֹ בְתֻפִּ֖ים וּבִמְחֹל֑וֹת וְרַק֙ הִ֣יא יְחִידָ֔ה ל֥וֹ אֵֽין־ בֵּ֖ן אוֹ־ בַֽת׃ מִמֶּ֛נּוּ yip̄·tāḥ way·yā·ḇō ’el- bê·ṯōw ham·miṣ·pāh wə·hin·nêh ḇit·tōw yō·ṣêṯ liq·rā·ṯōw ḇə·ṯup·pîm ū·ḇim·ḥō·lō·wṯ wə·raq hî yə·ḥî·ḏāh lōw ’ên- bên ’ōw- ḇaṯ mim·men·nūWLC · 34

As soon as [Jephthah] saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees…! You… have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word… to the LORD and cannot… take it back.”

“My father,” she replied “you have given your word - to the LORD. Do to me as you have said…, for the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites…”

She also said to her father, “Let me do… this… one thing: Let me wander… for two months through the mountains… with my friends and mourn… my virginity.”

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ אָבִ֔יהָ יֵעָ֥שֶׂה לִּ֖י הַזֶּ֑ה הַרְפֵּ֨ה מִמֶּ֜נִּי הַדָּבָ֣ר וְאֵֽלְכָה֙ וְיָרַדְתִּ֣י שְׁנַ֣יִם חֳדָשִׁ֗ים עַל־ הֶֽהָרִ֔ים אָנֹכִ֖י וְרֵעְיֹתָי׃ וְאֶבְכֶּה֙ עַל־ בְּתוּלַ֔י wat·tō·mer ’el- ’ā·ḇî·hā yê·‘ā·śeh lî haz·zeh har·pêh mim·men·nî had·dā·ḇār wə·’ê·lə·ḵāh wə·yā·raḏ·tî šə·na·yim ḥo·ḏā·šîm ‘al- he·hā·rîm ’ā·nō·ḵî wə·rē·ʿə·yō·ṯå̄y wə·’eḇ·keh ‘al- bə·ṯū·layWLC · 37

“Go,” he said. And he sent her away for two months. So she left with her friends and mourned her virginity upon the mountains.

  • After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her vvv vvv as he had vowed. And she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
