Crossing the Jordan

Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim with all the Israelites… They went as far as the Jordan…, where they camped… before crossing over.

- After three days the officers went through the camp

וַיְהִ֕י מִקְצֵ֖ה שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים הַשֹּׁטְרִ֖ים וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ בְּקֶ֥רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ way·hî miq·ṣêh šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîm haš·šō·ṭə·rîm way·ya·‘aḇ·rū bə·qe·reḇ ham·ma·ḥă·neh — WLC · 2

and commanded the people…: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.

וַיְצַוּוּ֮ אֶת־ הָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹר֒ כִּרְאֽוֹתְכֶ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם נֹשְׂאִ֖ים אֹת֑וֹ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְאַתֶּ֗ם תִּסְעוּ֙ מִמְּק֣וֹמְכֶ֔ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֖ם אַחֲרָֽיו׃ way·ṣaw·wū ’eṯ- hā·‘ām lê·mōr kir·’ō·wṯ·ḵem ’êṯ ’ă·rō·wn bə·rîṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem nō·śə·’îm ’ō·ṯōw hal·wî·yim wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·’at·tem tis·‘ū mim·mə·qō·wm·ḵem wa·hă·laḵ·tem ’a·ḥă·rāw — WLC · 3

But keep a distance… of about two thousand cubits… between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it,… so that you can see the way to go since you have never traveled this way before…”

אַ֣ךְ׀ רָח֣וֹק יִהְיֶ֗ה כְּאַלְפַּ֥יִם אַמָּ֖ה בַּמִּדָּ֑ה בֵּֽינֵיכֶם֙ וּבֵינוֹ אַֽל־ תִּקְרְב֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו לְמַ֤עַן אֲשֶׁר־ תֵּֽדְעוּ֙ אֶת־ הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽלְכוּ־ בָ֔הּ כִּ֣י לֹ֧א עֲבַרְתֶּ֛ם בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ מִתְּמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ס ’aḵ rā·ḥō·wq yih·yeh kə·’al·pa·yim ’am·māh bam·mid·dāh bê·nê·ḵem ū·ḇē·nō ’al- tiq·rə·ḇū ’ê·lāw lə·ma·‘an ’ă·šer- tê·ḏə·‘ū ’eṯ- had·de·reḵ ’ă·šer tê·lə·ḵū- ḇāh kî lō ‘ă·ḇar·tem bad·de·reḵ mit·tə·mō·wl šil·šō·wm — WLC · 4

Then Joshua… told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”

יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶל־ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הָעָ֖ם הִתְקַדָּ֑שׁוּ כִּ֣י מָחָ֗ר יְהוָ֛ה יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה נִפְלָאֽוֹת׃ בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֖ם yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’el- way·yō·mer hā·‘ām hiṯ·qad·dā·šū kî mā·ḥār Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śeh nip̄·lā·’ō·wṯ bə·qir·bə·ḵem — WLC · 5

And [he] said to the priests,… “Take the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went ahead of them.

יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים לֵאמֹ֔ר שְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־ אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית וְעִבְר֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־ אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ס yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yō·mer ’el- hak·kō·hă·nîm lê·mōr śə·’ū ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn hab·bə·rîṯ wə·‘iḇ·rū lip̄·nê hā·‘ām way·yiś·’ū ’eṯ- ’ă·rō·wn hab·bə·rîṯ way·yê·lə·ḵū lip̄·nê hā·‘ām — WLC · 6

Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today… I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה אָחֵל֙ גַּדֶּלְךָ֔ בְּעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ יֵֽדְע֔וּן כִּ֗י הָיִ֛יתִי עִם־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶהְיֶ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ׃ מֹשֶׁ֖ה Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ hay·yō·wm haz·zeh ’ā·ḥêl gad·del·ḵā bə·‘ê·nê kāl- yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer yê·ḏə·‘ūn kî hā·yî·ṯî ‘im- ka·’ă·šer ’eh·yeh ‘im·māḵ mō·šeh — WLC · 7

- Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant:… ‘When you reach… the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’”
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤕𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤀𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤃 𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤕𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤐 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍
וְאַתָּ֗ה תְּצַוֶּה֙ אֶת־ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים נֹשְׂאֵ֥י אֲרֽוֹן־ הַבְּרִ֖ית לֵאמֹ֑ר כְּבֹאֲכֶ֗ם עַד־ קְצֵה֙ מֵ֣י הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן תַּעֲמֹֽדוּ׃פ בַּיַּרְדֵּ֖ן wə·’at·tāh tə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ- hak·kō·hă·nîm nō·śə·’ê ’ă·rō·wn- hab·bə·rîṯ lê·mōr kə·ḇō·’ă·ḵem ‘aḏ- qə·ṣêh mê hay·yar·dên ta·‘ă·mō·ḏū bay·yar·dên — WLC · 8

So Joshua… told the Israelites…, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.”

יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ אֶל־ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל גֹּ֣שׁוּ הֵ֔נָּה וְשִׁמְע֕וּ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’el- way·yō·mer bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl gō·šū hên·nāh wə·šim·‘ū ’eṯ- diḇ·rê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 9

He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God [is] among you and that He will surely drive out… before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.

יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בְּזֹאת֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּן כִּ֛י חַ֖י אֵ֥ל בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וְהוֹרֵ֣שׁ יוֹרִ֣ישׁ מִ֠פְּנֵיכֶם אֶת־ הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י וְאֶת־ הַחִתִּ֜י וְאֶת־ הַחִוִּ֗י וְאֶת־ הַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְאֶת־ הַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֔י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yō·mer bə·zōṯ tê·ḏə·‘ūn kî ḥay ’êl bə·qir·bə·ḵem wə·hō·w·rêš yō·w·rîš mip·pə·nê·ḵem ’eṯ- hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥit·tî wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥiw·wî wə·’eṯ- hap·pə·riz·zî wə·’eṯ- hag·gir·gā·šî wə·hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·hay·ḇū·sî — WLC · 10

Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go ahead of you into the Jordan.

הִנֵּה֙ אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית אֲד֖וֹן כָּל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ עֹבֵ֥ר לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם בַּיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ hin·nêh ’ă·rō·wn hab·bə·rîṯ ’ă·ḏō·wn kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ‘ō·ḇêr lip̄·nê·ḵem bay·yar·dên — WLC · 11

Now choose twelve… men from the tribes of Israel, one… from each tribe.
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤈
וְעַתָּ֗ה קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ שְׁנֵ֣י עָשָׂ֣ר אִ֔ישׁ מִשִּׁבְטֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶחָ֥ד אִישׁ־ אֶחָ֖ד אִישׁ־ לַשָּֽׁבֶט׃ wə·‘at·tāh qə·ḥū lā·ḵem šə·nê ‘ā·śār ’îš miš·šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- laš·šā·ḇeṭ — WLC · 12

- When the feet… of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD— the Lord of all the earth— touch down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing… waters will be cut off [and] will stand up in a heap.”
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤇 𐤁𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤍𐤃
וְהָיָ֡ה כַּפּ֣וֹת רַגְלֵ֣י הַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים נֹשְׂאֵי֩ אֲר֨וֹן יְהוָ֜ה אֲד֤וֹן כָּל־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ כְּנ֣וֹחַ בְּמֵ֣י הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ הַיֹּרְדִ֖ים מִלְמָ֑עְלָה מֵ֤י יִכָּ֣רֵת֔וּן הַמַּ֥יִם וְיַעַמְד֖וּ אֶחָֽד׃ נֵ֥ד wə·hā·yāh kap·pō·wṯ raḡ·lê hak·kō·hă·nîm nō·śə·’ê ’ă·rō·wn Yah·weh ’ă·ḏō·wn kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ kə·nō·w·aḥ bə·mê hay·yar·dên hay·yar·dên hay·yō·rə·ḏîm mil·mā·‘ə·lāh mê yik·kā·rê·ṯūn ham·ma·yim wə·ya·‘am·ḏū ’e·ḥāḏ nêḏ — WLC · 13

So when the people broke camp… to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of [them].
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤎𐤏 𐤌𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌
וַיְהִ֗י הָעָם֙ בִּנְסֹ֤עַ מֵאָ֣הֳלֵיהֶ֔ם לַעֲבֹ֖ר אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים נֹֽשְׂאֵ֛י הָאָר֥וֹן הַבְּרִ֖ית לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ way·hî hā·‘ām bin·sō·a‘ mê·’ā·ho·lê·hem la·‘ă·ḇōr ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm nō·śə·’ê hā·’ā·rō·wn hab·bə·rîṯ lip̄·nê hā·‘ām — WLC · 14

Now the Jordan overflows… its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests… carrying the ark reached… the Jordan [and] their feet touched the water’s edge,

the flowing… water stood still. It backed up… as far upstream… as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea… was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation vvv had crossed the Jordan.
