Chapter 23
Joshua’s Charge to Leaders
1
- A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old [and] well along in years,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤇 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤁𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌
וַֽיְהִי֙ רַבִּ֔ים מִיָּמִ֣ים אַ֠חֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֧ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הֵנִ֨יחַ מִכָּל־ אֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם מִסָּבִ֑יב וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ זָקֵ֔ן בָּ֖א בַּיָּמִֽים׃ way·hî rab·bîm mî·yā·mîm ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·šer- Yah·weh lə·yiś·rā·’êl hê·nî·aḥ mik·kāl ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem mis·sā·ḇîḇ wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ zā·qên bā bay·yā·mîm — WLC · 1

[he] summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old [and] well along in years,” he said -,

יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ וַיִּקְרָ֤א לְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִזְקֵנָיו֙ וּלְרָאשָׁ֔יו וּלְשֹׁפְטָ֖יו וּלְשֹֽׁטְרָ֑יו אֲנִ֣י זָקַ֔נְתִּי בָּ֖אתִי בַּיָּמִֽים׃ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ way·yiq·rā lə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl liz·qê·nāw ū·lə·rā·šāw ū·lə·šō·p̄ə·ṭāw ū·lə·šō·ṭə·rāw ’ă·nî zā·qan·tî bā·ṯî bay·yā·mîm way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem — WLC · 2

“and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.

וְאַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֗ם אֵת֩ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם עָשָׂ֜ה לְכָל־ הָאֵ֖לֶּה הַגּוֹיִ֥ם מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י ה֖וּא יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם הַנִּלְחָ֥ם לָכֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tem rə·’î·ṯem ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ‘ā·śāh lə·ḵāl hā·’êl·leh hag·gō·w·yim mip·pə·nê·ḵem kî hū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem han·nil·ḥām lā·ḵem — WLC · 3

See, I have allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward… to the Great Sea…

רְאוּ֩ הִפַּ֨לְתִּי לָכֶ֜ם בְּנַחֲלָ֖ה אֶֽת־ לְשִׁבְטֵיכֶ֑ם הָאֵ֛לֶּה הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הַ֠גּוֹיִם וְכָל־ הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִכְרַ֔תִּי מִן־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן מְב֥וֹא הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ וְהַיָּ֥ם הַגָּד֖וֹל rə·’ū hip·pal·tî lā·ḵem bə·na·ḥă·lāh ’eṯ- lə·šiḇ·ṭê·ḵem hā·’êl·leh han·niš·’ā·rîm hag·gō·w·yim wə·ḵāl hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer hiḵ·rat·tî min- hay·yar·dên mə·ḇō·w haš·šā·meš wə·hay·yām hag·gā·ḏō·wl — WLC · 4

The LORD your God… will push them out of your way and drive them out before you…, so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.

וַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם ה֚וּא יֶהְדֳּפֵ֣ם מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ישׁ אֹתָ֖ם מִלִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וִֽירִשְׁתֶּם֙ אֶת־ אַרְצָ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם דִּבֶּ֛ר לָכֶֽם׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem hū yeh·do·p̄êm mip·pə·nê·ḵem wə·hō·w·rîš ’ō·ṯām mil·lip̄·nê·ḵem wî·riš·tem ’eṯ- ’ar·ṣām ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem dib·ber lā·ḵem — WLC · 5

Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.

מְאֹ֔ד וַחֲזַקְתֶּ֣ם לִשְׁמֹ֣ר וְלַעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֵ֚ת כָּל־ הַכָּת֔וּב בְּסֵ֖פֶר תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֑ה לְבִלְתִּ֥י סוּר־ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃ mə·’ōḏ wa·ḥă·zaq·tem liš·mōr wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’êṯ kāl- hak·kā·ṯūḇ bə·sê·p̄er tō·w·raṯ mō·šeh lə·ḇil·tî sūr- mim·men·nū yā·mîn ū·śə·mō·wl — WLC · 6

So you are not to associate with these nations that remain… among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or swear by them, and you must not serve them [or] bow down to them.

לְבִלְתִּי־ בוֹא֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה בַּגּוֹיִ֣ם הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אִתְּכֶ֑ם לֹא־ תַזְכִּ֙ירוּ֙ וּבְשֵׁ֨ם אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֤ם וְלֹ֣א תַשְׁבִּ֔יעוּ וְלֹ֣א תַעַבְד֔וּם וְלֹ֥א תִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לָהֶֽם׃ lə·ḇil·tî- ḇō·w hā·’êl·leh bag·gō·w·yim han·niš·’ā·rîm hā·’êl·leh ’it·tə·ḵem lō- ṯaz·kî·rū ū·ḇə·šêm ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem wə·lō ṯaš·bî·‘ū wə·lō ṯa·‘aḇ·ḏūm wə·lō ṯiš·ta·ḥă·wū lā·hem — WLC · 7

Instead…, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.

כִּ֛י אִם־ תִּדְבָּ֑קוּ בַּיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֔ם עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם kî ’im- tiḏ·bā·qū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ka·’ă·šer ‘ă·śî·ṯem ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm — WLC · 8

The LORD has driven out great and powerful… nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.

יְהוָה֙ וַיּ֤וֹרֶשׁ גְּדֹלִ֣ים וַעֲצוּמִ֑ים וְאַתֶּ֗ם גּוֹיִ֖ם מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם עַ֖ד הַזֶּֽה׃ הַיּ֥וֹם לֹא־ אִישׁ֙ עָ֤מַד בִּפְנֵיכֶ֔ם Yah·weh way·yō·w·reš gə·ḏō·lîm wa·‘ă·ṣū·mîm wə·’at·tem gō·w·yim mip·pə·nê·ḵem ‘aḏ haz·zeh hay·yō·wm lō- ’îš ‘ā·maḏ bip̄·nê·ḵem — WLC · 9

vvv One of you can put a thousand {to flight}, because the LORD your God… fights for you, just as He promised

אִישׁ־ אֶחָ֥ד מִכֶּ֖ם יִרְדָּף־ אָ֑לֶף כִּ֣י׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֗ם ה֚וּא הַנִּלְחָ֣ם לָכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר לָכֶֽם׃ ’îš- ’e·ḥāḏ mik·kem yir·dāp̄- ’ā·lep̄ kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem hū han·nil·ḥām lā·ḵem ka·’ă·šer dib·ber lā·ḵem — WLC · 10

Therefore watch yourselves carefully, that you love the LORD your God.

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם לְנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶ֑ם מְאֹ֖ד לְאַהֲבָ֖ה אֶת־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·niš·mar·tem lə·nap̄·šō·ṯê·ḵem mə·’ōḏ lə·’a·hă·ḇāh ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 11

For if you turn away… and cling to the rest of these nations that remain… among you, and if you intermarry and associate with them
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤒𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤍𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤌
כִּ֣י׀ אִם־ שׁ֣וֹב תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ וּדְבַקְתֶּם֙ בְּיֶ֙תֶר֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַגּוֹיִ֣ם הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְהִֽתְחַתַּנְתֶּ֥ם בָּהֶ֛ם וּבָאתֶ֥ם בָּהֶ֖ם וְהֵ֥ם בָּכֶֽם׃ kî ’im- šō·wḇ tā·šū·ḇū ū·ḏə·ḇaq·tem bə·ye·ṯer hā·’êl·leh hag·gō·w·yim han·niš·’ā·rîm hā·’êl·leh ’it·tə·ḵem wə·hiṯ·ḥat·tan·tem bā·hem ū·ḇā·ṯem bā·hem wə·hêm bā·ḵem — WLC · 12

know for sure… that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a snare and a trap, a scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.

יָד֙וֹעַ֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּ כִּי֩ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֗ם לֹ֨א יוֹסִ֜יף לְהוֹרִ֛ישׁ הָאֵ֖לֶּה הַגּוֹיִ֥ם אֶת־ מִלִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וְהָי֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם לְפַ֣ח וּלְמוֹקֵ֗שׁ וּלְשֹׁטֵ֤ט בְּצִדֵּיכֶם֙ וְלִצְנִנִ֣ים בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֔ם עַד־ אֲבָדְכֶ֗ם מֵ֠עַל הַזֹּ֔את הַטּוֹבָה֙ הָאֲדָמָ֤ה אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ נָתַ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם yā·ḏō·w·a‘ tê·ḏə·‘ū kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem lō yō·w·sîp̄ lə·hō·w·rîš hā·’êl·leh hag·gō·w·yim ’eṯ- mil·lip̄·nê·ḵem wə·hā·yū lā·ḵem lə·p̄aḥ ū·lə·mō·w·qêš ū·lə·šō·ṭêṭ bə·ṣid·dê·ḵem wə·liṣ·ni·nîm bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem ‘aḏ- ’ă·ḇā·ḏə·ḵem mê·‘al haz·zōṯ haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem nā·ṯan lā·ḵem — WLC · 13

Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart [and] soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.

- But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you - the calamity He has threatened until He has destroyed you from this good land [He]… has given you.

If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
