God Instructs Joshua
1
Now after the death of His servant Moses, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵ֛י מ֥וֹת יְהוָ֑ה עֶ֣בֶד מֹשֶׁ֖ה יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־ נ֔וּן מֹשֶׁ֖ה מְשָׁרֵ֥ת לֵאמֹֽר׃ way·hî ’a·ḥă·rê mō·wṯ Yah·weh ‘e·ḇeḏ mō·šeh Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūn mō·šeh mə·šā·rêṯ lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, [and] cross over the Jordan - into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.

מֹשֶׁ֥ה עַבְדִּ֖י מֵ֑ת וְעַתָּה֩ ק֨וּם אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־ הָעָ֣ם עֲבֹ֜ר אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן הַזֶּ֗ה הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־ הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָנֹכִ֛י נֹתֵ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·šeh ‘aḇ·dî mêṯ wə·‘at·tāh qūm ’at·tāh wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām ‘ă·ḇōr ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên haz·zeh haz·zeh ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî nō·ṯên lā·hem liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 2

I have given you every place where the sole of your foot will tread, just as I promised to Moses.

נְתַתִּ֑יו כָּל־ מָק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר כַּֽף־ רַגְלְכֶ֛ם בּ֖וֹ לָכֶ֣ם תִּדְרֹ֧ךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי אֶל־ מֹשֶֽׁה׃ nə·ṯat·tîw kāl- mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer kap̄- raḡ·lə·ḵem bōw lā·ḵem tiḏ·rōḵ ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tî ’el- mō·šeh — WLC · 3

Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon… to the great River Euphrates -— all the land of the Hittites— and west… as far as the Great Sea.

גְּבוּלְכֶֽם׃ יִֽהְיֶ֖ה מֵהַמִּדְבָּר֩ וְהַלְּבָנ֨וֹן הַזֶּ֜ה וְֽעַד־ הַגָּד֣וֹל נְהַר־ פְּרָ֗ת הַנָּהָ֧ר כֹּ֚ל אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽחִתִּ֔ים מְב֣וֹא הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְעַד־ הַגָּד֖וֹל הַיָּ֥ם gə·ḇū·lə·ḵem yih·yeh mê·ham·miḏ·bār wə·hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn haz·zeh wə·‘aḏ- hag·gā·ḏō·wl nə·har- pə·rāṯ han·nā·hār kōl ’e·reṣ ha·ḥit·tîm mə·ḇō·w haš·šā·meš wə·‘aḏ- hag·gā·ḏō·wl hay·yām — WLC · 4

No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

לֹֽא־ אִישׁ֙ יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב לְפָנֶ֔יךָ כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּ֑יךָ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר אֶהְיֶ֣ה עִמָּ֔ךְ מֹשֶׁה֙ הָיִ֤יתִי עִם־ לֹ֥א אַרְפְּךָ֖ וְלֹ֥א אֶעֶזְבֶֽךָּ׃ lō- ’îš yiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā kōl yə·mê ḥay·ye·ḵā ka·’ă·šer ’eh·yeh ‘im·māḵ mō·šeh hā·yî·ṯî ‘im- lō ’ar·pə·ḵā wə·lō ’e·‘ez·ḇe·kā — WLC · 5

Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance -… of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them.

חֲזַ֖ק וֶאֱמָ֑ץ כִּ֣י אַתָּ֗ה תַּנְחִיל֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה אֶת־ הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֥עְתִּי לַאֲבוֹתָ֖ם לָתֵ֥ת לָהֶֽם׃ ḥă·zaq we·’ĕ·māṣ kî ’at·tāh tan·ḥîl ’eṯ- hā·‘ām haz·zeh ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- niš·ba‘·tî la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām lā·ṯêṯ lā·hem — WLC · 6

Above all, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever… you go.

רַק֩ חֲזַ֨ק מְאֹ֗ד וֶֽאֱמַ֜ץ לִשְׁמֹ֤ר לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ כְּכָל־ הַתּוֹרָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר עַבְדִּ֔י מֹשֶׁ֣ה צִוְּךָ֙ אַל־ תָּס֥וּר מִמֶּ֖נּוּ יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול לְמַ֣עַן תַּשְׂכִּ֔יל בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר תֵּלֵֽךְ׃ raq ḥă·zaq mə·’ōḏ we·’ĕ·maṣ liš·mōr la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḵāl- hat·tō·w·rāh ’ă·šer ‘aḇ·dî mō·šeh ṣiw·wə·ḵā ’al- tā·sūr mim·men·nū yā·mîn ū·śə·mō·wl lə·ma·‘an taś·kîl bə·ḵōl ’ă·šer tê·lêḵ — WLC · 7

This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do…

הַזֶּ֜ה סֵפֶר֩ הַתּוֹרָ֨ה לֹֽא־ יָמ֡וּשׁ מִפִּ֗יךָ וְהָגִ֤יתָ בּוֹ֙ יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַ֔יְלָה לְמַ֙עַן֙ תִּשְׁמֹ֣ר לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּכָל־ הַכָּת֖וּב בּ֑וֹ כִּי־ אָ֛ז תַּצְלִ֥יחַ אֶת־ תַּשְׂכִּֽיל׃ דְּרָכֶ֖ךָ וְאָ֥ז haz·zeh sê·p̄er hat·tō·w·rāh lō- yā·mūš mip·pî·ḵā wə·hā·ḡî·ṯā bōw yō·w·mām wā·lay·lāh lə·ma·‘an tiš·mōr la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kə·ḵāl- hak·kā·ṯūḇ bōw kî- ’āz taṣ·lî·aḥ ’eṯ- taś·kîl də·rā·ḵe·ḵā wə·’āz — WLC · 8

Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid;… do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

הֲל֤וֹא צִוִּיתִ֙יךָ֙ חֲזַ֣ק וֶאֱמָ֔ץ אַֽל־ תַּעֲרֹ֖ץ וְאַל־ תֵּחָ֑ת כִּ֤י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ עִמְּךָ֙ בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר תֵּלֵֽךְ׃פ hă·lō·w ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā ḥă·zaq we·’ĕ·māṣ ’al- ta·‘ă·rōṣ wə·’al- tê·ḥāṯ kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ‘im·mə·ḵā bə·ḵōl ’ă·šer tê·lêḵ — WLC · 9
Joshua Takes Charge

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people…:
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤔𐤈𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ אֶת־ וַיְצַ֣ו שֹׁטְרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ ’eṯ- way·ṣaw šō·ṭə·rê hā·‘ām lê·mōr — WLC · 10

“Go through the camp and tell the people,… ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”

עִבְר֣וּ׀ בְּקֶ֣רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה וְצַוּ֤וּ אֶת־ הָעָם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הָכִ֥ינוּ לָכֶ֖ם צֵידָ֑ה כִּ֞י בְּע֣וֹד׀ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים אַתֶּם֙ עֹֽבְרִים֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן לָבוֹא֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת אֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם נֹתֵ֥ן לָכֶ֖ם לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ס ‘iḇ·rū bə·qe·reḇ ham·ma·ḥă·neh wə·ṣaw·wū ’eṯ- hā·‘ām lê·mōr hā·ḵî·nū lā·ḵem ṣê·ḏāh kî bə·‘ō·wḏ šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîm ’at·tem ‘ō·ḇə·rîm ’eṯ- haz·zeh hay·yar·dên lā·ḇō·w lā·re·šeṯ ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem nō·ṯên lā·ḵem lə·riš·tāh — WLC · 11

But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe… of Manasseh, Joshua… said,
𐤅𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤑𐤉 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓
וְלָרֽאוּבֵנִי֙ וְלַגָּדִ֔י וְלַחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ לֵאמֹֽר׃ אָמַ֥ר wə·lā·r·’ū·ḇê·nî wə·lag·gā·ḏî wə·la·ḥă·ṣî šê·ḇeṭ ham·naš·šeh yə·hō·wō·šu·a‘ lê·mōr ’ā·mar — WLC · 12

“Remember - what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest and He will give you this land.’
𐤆𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
זָכוֹר֙ אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֥ה עֶֽבֶד־ יְהוָ֖ה צִוָּ֥ה אֶתְכֶ֛ם לֵאמֹ֑ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם֙ מֵנִ֣יחַ לָכֶ֔ם וְנָתַ֥ן לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ הָאָ֥רֶץ zā·ḵō·wr ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer mō·šeh ‘e·ḇeḏ- Yah·weh ṣiw·wāh ’eṯ·ḵem lê·mōr Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem mê·nî·aḥ lā·ḵem wə·nā·ṯan lā·ḵem ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 13

Your wives, your young children, and your livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan… But all your mighty men of valor must be armed for battle to cross over ahead of your brothers and help them -,
𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤈𐤐𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌
נְשֵׁיכֶ֣ם טַפְּכֶם֮ וּמִקְנֵיכֶם֒ יֵשְׁב֕וּ בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֖ה נָתַ֥ן לָכֶ֛ם בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְאַתֶּם֩ כֹּ֚ל גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י הַחַ֔יִל חֲמֻשִׁ֜ים תַּעַבְר֨וּ לִפְנֵ֣י אֲחֵיכֶ֗ם וַעֲזַרְתֶּ֖ם אוֹתָֽם׃ nə·šê·ḵem ṭap·pə·ḵem ū·miq·nê·ḵem yê·šə·ḇū bā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer mō·šeh nā·ṯan lā·ḵem bə·‘ê·ḇer hay·yar·dên wə·’at·tem kōl gib·bō·w·rê ha·ḥa·yil ḥă·mu·šîm ta·‘aḇ·rū lip̄·nê ’ă·ḥê·ḵem wa·‘ă·zar·tem ’ō·w·ṯām — WLC · 14

until the LORD gives [them] rest… as He has done for you, and [your brothers] also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east… side of the Jordan.”

Just as we obeyed… Moses… in all things, so we will obey you… And may the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses.

Anyone… who rebels against your order and does not obey your words, all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and courageous!”
