Chapter 5

The Covenant at Horeb

1

Then Moses summoned all Israel and said… to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I declare in your hearing this day. Learn them and observe them carefully.

The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ כָּרַ֥ת בְּרִ֖ית עִמָּ֛נוּ בְּחֹרֵֽב׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū kā·raṯ bə·rîṯ ‘im·mā·nū bə·ḥō·rêḇWLC · 2

He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with… all of us who are alive here today…

יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ לֹ֣א כָּרַ֥ת הַזֹּ֑את הַבְּרִ֣ית אֶת־ אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ כִּ֣י אִתָּ֗נוּ אֲנַ֨חְנוּ אֵ֥לֶּה כֻּלָּ֥נוּ חַיִּֽים׃ פֹ֛ה הַיּ֖וֹם Yah·weh ’eṯ- lō kā·raṯ haz·zōṯ hab·bə·rîṯ ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū kî ’it·tā·nū ’ă·naḥ·nū ’êl·leh kul·lā·nū ḥay·yîm p̄ōh hay·yō·wmWLC · 3

The LORD spoke with you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.

The Ten Commandments

At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. And He said:

הַהִ֔וא בָּעֵ֣ת אָ֠נֹכִי עֹמֵ֨ד בֵּין־ יְהוָ֤ה וּבֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ לְהַגִּ֥יד לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־ דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י יְרֵאתֶם֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י הָאֵ֔שׁ וְלֹֽא־ עֲלִיתֶ֥ם בָּהָ֖ר לֵאמֹֽר׃ס ha·hi·w bā·‘êṯ ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ō·mêḏ bên- Yah·weh ū·ḇê·nê·ḵem lə·hag·gîḏ lā·ḵem ’eṯ- də·ḇar Yah·weh kî yə·rê·ṯem mip·pə·nê hā·’êš wə·lō- ‘ă·lî·ṯem bā·hār lê·mōrWLC · 5

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

אָֽנֹכִי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֣ית עֲבָדִֽ֑ים׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ă·šer hō·w·ṣê·ṯî·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mib·bēṯ ʿă·ḇå̄·ḏīmWLC · 6

You shall have no other gods before Me.

יִהְיֶ֥ה־ לֹ֣א לְךָ֛֩ אֲחֵרִ֖֜ים אֱלֹהִ֥֨ים עַל־ פָּנָֽ֗יַ׃ yih·yeh- lō lə·ḵā ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘al- pā·nā·yaWLC · 7

{You shall} not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath -.

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤑

לֹֽ֣א־ תַעֲשֶׂ֥ה־ לְךָ֥֣ פֶ֣֙סֶל֙׀ תְּמוּנָ֔֡ה אֲשֶׁ֤֣ר כָּל־ בַּשָּׁמַ֣֙יִם֙׀ מִמַּ֔֡עַל וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר֩ בָּאָ֖֨רֶץ מִתָּ֑֜חַת וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּמַּ֖֣יִם׀ מִתַּ֥֣חַת לָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃ lō- ṯa·‘ă·śeh- lə·ḵā p̄e·sel tə·mū·nāh ’ă·šer kāl- baš·šā·ma·yim mim·ma·‘al wa·’ă·šer bā·’ā·reṣ mit·tā·ḥaṯ wa·’ă·šer bam·ma·yim mit·ta·ḥaṯ lā·’ā·reṣWLC · 8

You shall not bow down to them… or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children… to the third… and fourth [generations] of those who hate Me,

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤒𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤉

לֹא־ תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥֣ה לָהֶ֖ם֮ וְלֹ֣א תָעָבְדֵ֑ם֒ כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֞י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ קַנָּ֔א אֵ֣ל פֹּ֠קֵד עֲוֺ֨ן אָב֧וֹת עַל־ בָּנִ֛ים וְעַל־ שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים וְעַל־ רִבֵּעִ֖ים לְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃ lō- ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh lā·hem wə·lō ṯā·‘ā·ḇə·ḏêm kî ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā qan·nā ’êl pō·qêḏ ‘ă·wōn ’ā·ḇō·wṯ ‘al- bā·nîm wə·‘al- šil·lê·šîm wə·‘al- rib·bê·‘îm lə·śō·nə·ʾå̄yWLC · 9

but showing loving devotion to a thousand [generations] of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤎

וְעֹ֤֥שֶׂה חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ לַֽאֲלָפִ֑֔ים לְאֹהֲבַ֖י וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֹתוֹ׃ס wə·‘ō·śeh ḥe·seḏ la·’ă·lā·p̄îm lə·’ō·hă·ḇay ū·lə·šō·mə·rê miṣ·wō·ṯōWLC · 10

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤍𐤒𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤀𐤎

לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֛א אֶת־ שֵֽׁם־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לַשָּׁ֑וְא כִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֵ֛ת לֹ֤א יְנַקֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ יִשָּׂ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ אֶת־ לַשָּֽׁוְא׃ס lō ṯiś·śā ’eṯ- šêm- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā laš·šāw kî Yah·weh ’êṯ lō yə·naq·qeh ’ă·šer- yiś·śā šə·mōw ’eṯ- laš·šāwWLC · 11

Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.

שָׁמ֣֛וֹר אֶת־ הַשַּׁבָּ֖֨ת י֥וֹם֩ לְקַדְּשׁ֑֜וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥֣ה אֱלֹהֶֽ֗יךָ׃ צִוְּךָ֖֣׀ šā·mō·wr ’eṯ- haš·šab·bå̄ṯ yō·wm lə·qad·də·šōw ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ʾɛ̆·lō·hɛ·ḵå̄ ṣiw·wə·ḵāWLC · 12

Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

𐤔𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤊

שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת יָמִ֣ים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ כָּֿל־ מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ šê·šeṯ yā·mîm ta·‘ă·ḇōḏ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā kå̄l- mə·laḵ·te·ḵāWLC · 13

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work— neither you, nor your son [or] daughter, nor your manservant [or] maidservant, nor your ox or donkey or any of your livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest as you do.

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֜֔י וְי֙וֹם֙ שַׁבָּ֖֣ת׀ לַיהוָ֣֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ לֹ֣א תַעֲשֶׂ֣ה כָל־ מְלָאכָ֡ה אַתָּ֣ה וּבִנְךָֽ־ וּבִתֶּ֣ךָ וְעַבְדְּךָֽ־ וַ֠אֲמָתֶךָ וְשׁוֹרְךָ֨ וַחֲמֹֽרְךָ֜ וְכָל־ בְּהֶמְתֶּ֗ךָ וְגֵֽרְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ לְמַ֗עַן עַבְדְּךָ֥ וַאֲמָתְךָ֖ יָנ֛וּחַ כָּמֽ֑וֹךָ׃ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î wə·yō·wm šab·bāṯ laš·šēm ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lō ṯa·‘ă·śeh ḵāl mə·lā·ḵāh ’at·tāh ū·ḇin·ḵā- ū·ḇit·te·ḵā wə·‘aḇ·də·ḵā- wa·’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā wə·šō·wr·ḵā wa·ḥă·mō·rə·ḵā wə·ḵāl bə·hem·te·ḵā wə·ḡê·rə·ḵā ’ă·šer biš·‘ā·re·ḵā lə·ma·‘an ‘aḇ·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā yā·nū·aḥ kå̄·mō·ḵå̄WLC · 14

Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. That is why… the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

וְזָכַרְתָּ֞֗ כִּ֣י־ הָיִ֣֙יתָ֙׀ עֶ֤֥בֶד בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔֗יִם יְהוָ֤֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֤֙יךָ֙ וַיֹּצִ֨אֲךָ֜֩ מִשָּׁ֔ם֙ חֲזָקָ֖ה֙ בְּיָ֤֥ד נְטוּיָ֑֔ה וּבִזְרֹ֣עַ עַל־ כֵּ֗ן יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ צִוְּךָ֙ לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת אֶת־ הַשַׁבָּֽת׃ס י֥וֹם wə·zā·ḵar·tā kî- hā·yî·ṯā ‘e·ḇeḏ bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā way·yō·ṣi·’ă·ḵā miš·šām ḥă·zā·qāh bə·yāḏ nə·ṭū·yāh ū·ḇiz·rō·a‘ ‘al- kên Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ṣiw·wə·ḵā la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ’eṯ- ha·šab·bå̄ṯ yō·wmWLC · 15

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

כַּבֵּ֤ד אֶת־ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ וְאֶת־ אִמֶּ֔ךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ צִוְּךָ֖ לְמַ֣עַן׀ יָמֶ֗יךָ יַאֲרִיכֻ֣ן וּלְמַ֙עַן֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ס kab·bêḏ ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā wə·’eṯ- ’im·me·ḵā ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ṣiw·wə·ḵā lə·ma·‘an yā·me·ḵā ya·’ă·rî·ḵun ū·lə·ma·‘an yî·ṭaḇ lāḵ ‘al hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lāḵWLC · 16

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

וְלֹ֖֣א תִּֿנְאָֽ֑ף׃ס wə·lō tin·ʾå̄p̄WLC · 18

19

You shall not steal.

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤂𐤍𐤁𐤎

וְלֹ֖֣א תִּֿגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ס wə·lō tiḡ·nōḇWLC · 19

20

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s… wife. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house or field, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

  • The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

אֶֽת־ יְהוָ֨ה דִּבֶּר֩ הָאֵ֡לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֣ים גָּד֖וֹל ק֥וֹל אֶל־ כָּל־ קְהַלְכֶ֜ם מִתּ֤וֹךְ הָאֵשׁ֙ הֶֽעָנָ֣ן וְהָֽעֲרָפֶ֔ל בָּהָ֗ר יָסָ֑ף וְלֹ֣א וַֽיִּכְתְּבֵ֗ם עַל־ שְׁנֵי֙ לֻחֹ֣ת אֲבָנִ֔ים וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃ ’eṯ- Yah·weh dib·ber hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm gā·ḏō·wl qō·wl ’el- kāl- qə·hal·ḵem mit·tō·wḵ hā·’êš he·‘ā·nān wə·hā·‘ă·rā·p̄el bā·hār yā·sāp̄ wə·lō way·yiḵ·tə·ḇêm ‘al- šə·nê lu·ḥōṯ ’ă·ḇā·nîm way·yit·tə·nêm ’ê·lāyWLC · 22

  • And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,

וַיְהִ֗י כְּשָׁמְעֲכֶ֤ם אֶת־ הַקּוֹל֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ וְהָהָ֖ר בֹּעֵ֣ר בָּאֵ֑שׁ כָּל־ רָאשֵׁ֥י שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֖ם וְזִקְנֵיכֶֽם׃ וַתִּקְרְב֣וּן אֵלַ֔י way·hî kə·šā·mə·‘ă·ḵem ’eṯ- haq·qō·wl mit·tō·wḵ ha·ḥō·šeḵ wə·hā·hār bō·‘êr bā·’êš kāl- rā·šê šiḇ·ṭê·ḵem wə·ziq·nê·ḵem wat·tiq·rə·ḇūn ’ê·layWLC · 23

and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire. Today… we have seen that a man can live [even if] God speaks with [him].

וַתֹּאמְר֗וּ הֵ֣ן יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ אֶת־ הֶרְאָ֜נוּ כְּבֹד֣וֹ וְאֶת־ גָּדְל֔וֹ וְאֶת־ שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ קֹל֥וֹ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הָאֵ֑שׁ הַיּ֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ רָאִ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־ הָֽאָדָ֖ם וָחָֽי׃ אֱלֹהִ֛ים יְדַבֵּ֧ר אֶת־ wat·tō·mə·rū hên Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’eṯ- her·’ā·nū kə·ḇō·ḏōw wə·’eṯ- gā·ḏə·lōw wə·’eṯ- šā·ma‘·nū qō·lōw mit·tō·wḵ hā·’êš hay·yō·wm haz·zeh rā·’î·nū kî- hā·’ā·ḏām wā·ḥāy ’ĕ·lō·hîm yə·ḏab·bêr ’eṯ-WLC · 24

But now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.

וְעַתָּה֙ לָ֣מָּה נָמ֔וּת כִּ֣י הַזֹּ֑את הַגְּדֹלָ֖ה הָאֵ֥שׁ תֹֽאכְלֵ֔נוּ וָמָֽתְנוּ׃ אִם־ יֹסְפִ֣ים׀ אֲנַ֗חְנוּ לִ֠שְׁמֹעַ אֶת־ ק֨וֹל יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ ע֖וֹד wə·‘at·tāh lām·māh nā·mūṯ kî haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·lāh hā·’êš ṯō·ḵə·lê·nū wā·mā·ṯə·nū ’im- yō·sə·p̄îm ’ă·naḥ·nū liš·mō·a‘ ’eṯ- qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ‘ō·wḏWLC · 25

For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire, as we [have], and survived?

𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤉

כִּ֣י מִ֣י כָל־ בָּשָׂ֡ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁמַ֣ע קוֹל֩ חַיִּ֜ים אֱלֹהִ֨ים מְדַבֵּ֧ר מִתּוֹךְ־ הָאֵ֛שׁ כָּמֹ֖נוּ וַיֶּֽחִי׃ kî mî ḵāl bā·śār ’ă·šer šā·ma‘ qō·wl ḥay·yîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm mə·ḏab·bêr mit·tō·wḵ- hā·’êš kā·mō·nū way·ye·ḥîWLC · 26

Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then you can tell… us everything the LORD our God… tells you; we will listen and obey.”

קְרַ֤ב אַתָּה֙ וּֽשֲׁמָ֔ע אֵ֛ת כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ יֹאמַ֖ר וְאַ֣תְּ׀ תְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלֵ֗ינוּ אֵת֩ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ יְדַבֵּ֜ר וְשָׁמַ֥עְנוּ וְעָשִֽׂינוּ׃ qə·raḇ ’at·tāh ū·šă·mā‘ ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū yō·mar wə·’at tə·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lê·nū ’êṯ kāl- ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’ê·le·ḵā yə·ḏab·bêr wə·šā·ma‘·nū wə·‘ā·śî·nūWLC · 27

And the LORD - heard the words you spoke to me, and [He] said to me, “I have heard - the words that these people have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅

יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ ק֣וֹל וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע דִּבְרֵיכֶ֔ם בְּדַבֶּרְכֶ֖ם אֵלָ֑י יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלַ֗י שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי אֶת־ ק֨וֹל דִּבְרֵ֜י אֲשֶׁ֣ר הַזֶּה֙ הָעָ֤ם דִּבְּר֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ הֵיטִ֖יבוּ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽרוּ׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- qō·wl way·yiš·ma‘ diḇ·rê·ḵem bə·ḏab·ber·ḵem ’ê·lāy Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay šā·ma‘·tî ’eṯ- qō·wl diḇ·rê ’ă·šer haz·zeh hā·‘ām dib·bə·rū ’ê·le·ḵā hê·ṭî·ḇū kāl- ’ă·šer dib·bê·rūWLC · 28

If only… they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commandments always…, so that it might be well with them and with their children forever.

מִֽי־ יִתֵּ֡ן וְהָיָה֩ זֶ֜ה לָהֶ֗ם לְבָבָ֨ם לְיִרְאָ֥ה אֹתִ֛י וְלִשְׁמֹ֥ר אֶת־ כָּל־ מִצְוֺתַ֖י כָּל־ הַיָּמִ֑ים לְמַ֨עַן יִיטַ֥ב לָהֶ֛ם וְלִבְנֵיהֶ֖ם לְעֹלָֽם׃ mî- yit·tên wə·hā·yāh zeh lā·hem lə·ḇā·ḇām lə·yir·’āh ’ō·ṯî wə·liš·mōr ’eṯ- kāl- miṣ·wō·ṯay kāl- hay·yā·mîm lə·ma·‘an yî·ṭaḇ lā·hem wə·liḇ·nê·hem lə·‘ō·lāmWLC · 29

Go and tell them: ‘Return to your tents.’

לֵ֖ךְ אֱמֹ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם שׁ֥וּבוּ לָכֶ֖ם לְאָהֳלֵיכֶֽם׃ lêḵ ’ĕ·mōr lā·hem šū·ḇū lā·ḵem lə·’ā·ho·lê·ḵemWLC · 30

But you stand here with Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and statutes and ordinances you are to teach them to follow in the land that I am giving them to possess.”

וְאַתָּ֗ה עֲמֹ֣ד פֹּה֮ עִמָּדִי֒ וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה אֵלֶ֗יךָ אֵ֧ת כָּל־ הַמִּצְוָ֛ה וְהַחֻקִּ֥ים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר תְּלַמְּדֵ֑ם וְעָשׂ֣וּ בָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָנֹכִ֛י נֹתֵ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ wə·’at·tāh ‘ă·mōḏ pōh ‘im·mā·ḏî wa·’ă·ḏab·bə·rāh ’ê·le·ḵā ’êṯ kāl- ham·miṣ·wāh wə·ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·ham·miš·pā·ṭîm ’ă·šer tə·lam·mə·ḏêm wə·‘ā·śū ḇā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî nō·ṯên lā·hem lə·riš·tāhWLC · 31

So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם אֶתְכֶ֑ם צִוָּ֛ה לֹ֥א תָסֻ֖רוּ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאל׃ ū·šə·mar·tem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ’eṯ·ḵem ṣiw·wāh lō ṯā·su·rū yā·mîn ū·śə·mōlWLC · 32

You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong [your] days in the land that you will possess.
